If you didn't already know, VT wrestling has been a top 10 team for many years now under the tutelage of Coach Kevin Dresser and his excellent staff bringing home a trophy for 4th place at last year's NCAA tournament. Those guys are the definition of tough and the atmosphere in Cassell will be electric with the ACC regular season championship on the line. Go check it out!

Since I don't know all of the ins and outs of college wresting, what is the exact significance of the "regular season dual meet championship"? Is this basically the equivalent of a regular season title in every other sport? Also, was this match the result of them being the top two teams, or was it scheduled prior to the season starting and just so happens to be a defacto ACC regular season champ determiner? TIA
I'd say the regular season dual meet champion gets bragging rights mainly... the ACC championship begins Saturday March 4 in Raleigh, NC. There, individuals in each of the 10 weight classes will go through their own brackets scoring team points as they advance and ending with an individual champion for each weight class and then crowning the ACC "team" championship to the team with the most accumulated team points. Tonight's dual meet was already on the schedule and 'just happens' to be the best 2 teams with the title on the line. I say 'just happens' because these teams were the best 2 teams last year too and wrestled off late in the regular season last year in Raleigh for the title. (VT won) Strategic scheduling might have predicted these two teams would be in the same position again this year and set it for the last ACC dual meet battle tonight to increase the importance. Go see it live if you can or on the Watch ESPN app if you can't. Hokie Sports might stream it too.
Great clarification, thanks. I will definitely be watching on Roku WATCHESPN, but wish I lived close enough to watch in person. I've caught the last 3 or 4 streamable matches and it's awesome stuff to watch, especially at the level Tech is competing.
Only complaint is that this is definitely not OT. Its Virginia Tech sports. That's what this site is about right?

Guitar got me straighten out my first go around with wrestling. What is confusing to some are the different boards you can choose from.

Do we still have a shot at the national championship? What would be the path to get there?
Every individual needs to wrestle well in their individual weight classes. It's not team matches for the NCAAs but individual brackets.
NCAA D1 wrestling championships are March 16-18 in St. Louis this year. I expect VT will qualify 8 of 10 weight classes. Several should place in top 8 for AA (All American) status. 3 or 4 could win their weight classes if they wrestle their best. Last year we got on the podium and placed 4th in the country (our best finish ever). The Top 3 teams are definite powerhouses so while I'm rooting for a title, but I'll be stoked about anyting higher than 4th.
Side note, 4th is the highest finish for an ACC team.

There is. We finished 4th as a team last year.
Shot sure, but highly unlikely. Snyder isn't going to get beat at hwy so the best walz can finish will probably be 2nd and even that is a stretch. Dance has a shot, epperly and haught have shots. Zavatsky ranking wise will have a shot, but that nc state match wasn't a good way to close. He bounced back decently against SDSU. Everyone would have to exceed expectations and then even then we'd need some luck. I'm guessing we'll probably finish around 5th.

Selections will be announced Monday. Dresser said on a podcast that he anticipates the Hokies hosting Ohio State or Nebraska. Said Iowa has made it clear they don't want to wrestle Tech, excuse is that they don't want to travel so far.
If they're the top- or second- ranked Big 10 team, their travel request doesn't matter, does it? If I understand it correctly, the top two meets of the National Duels are to pit the #1 and #2 Non-B1G teams against the #1 and #2 B1G teams. Regionalization only applies to the lower tier duels.
Edit: Re-shuffling could also be in order to prevent re-matches, but that doesn't seem to be in play here.
It wasn't based on ranking, outside of the top match, like it was last year. That is why the Hokies drew Nebraska and Iowa got Edinboro. Probably didn't get Ohio state because we faced them a few years ago in a home and home.

He has built the program from the ground up and probably has no interest in going back to Iowa. I think that we (thankfully) will be able to keep him here. But yea join the HC anyways

Iowa is currently slated to come to VT for the next round of the National Duals... Buuuuuuut big rumors out that their coach, we know him well, is pulling out every stop in the book to avoid it, causing a delay of matchups until tomorrow.

Wow that is really unbelievable. Brands constantly dodging VT only makes him look worse and worse. He left 11 years ago, get over it... the entire administration has changed.
EDIT: The best part is that Brands' excuse is that they didn't want to travel to Blacksburg. Iowa to VT is 12 hours away. Nebraska to VT is 16 hours away. What an orange.

Saw us wrestle South Dakota State, we looked good except for 2 matches with one being an inexperienced guy. We look like a top 5 team, let's get the acc and NCAA
Yea, I really feel for Brendan Ryan at 141. He is really overmatched and it takes a lot of guts to consistently go out there knowing you don't have a shot, particularly when the rest of the team is doing so well.
For those that don't know, the starter Kevin Norstrem is hurt and the other back-up is being redshirted.
The guy that pinned him for SDSU wasn't very experience himself though. That was a match he really should have been competitive in and got some good experience.
Wrestled pretty well and much more aggressively. Didn't like how chishko finished in the 3rd period, but at least he got a takedown within seconds of OT.
Anyone what to bet that if Norstrem cant come back that Chishko cuts to 141?
Can he compete in the ACC or NCAA tournament at a weight he hasn't at all year?
I am not sure about college but you can in HS. There may be a cut off point that would not allow it.
I remember reading that you're not eligible to be ranked unless you have a certain number of bouts at that weight class, which would preclude an at-large bid at 141 to the NCAAs, but upon further reflection, I don't know of anything preventing him from cutting weight before the ACC tourney and earning one of the league's auto-bids.
That doesn't sound like a good idea. Why throw away good seeding at his current weight class just to get a worse seed at a lower one? No reason to doing a shuffle until next season.
Good point! Just thinking of filling a hole at 141 and I didn't even look to see what is behind him at 149!
That would explain why Chishko was not ranked for a few matches after he came back.
