There are two different reactions in the moments between when a player releases a last second shot, and when it reaches the basket.
Many people contort their body, and lean in a way that looks like a last ditch attempt to telekinetically will the jumper through the net. Or, they stand confidently. Coldly staring at the ball, daring it not to go in.
The second type of reaction is one of a stone cold killer. Someone so sure of himself, there's no doubt in his mind that he's about to hit a game winner.
As time ticked down on Tuesday night, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team trailed Clemson by two. With seven seconds remaining, the Hokies had a sideline out-of-bounds play for one last stab to keep themselves alive.
And there was no doubt who would hold the dagger.

Yes, that's Seth Allen. Aka Buzzketball's lone assassin. Aka the man with testicles the size of Lane Stadium. Aka the man who did this:
And then just two days later did this:
Three game winners in the last 10 days. It's second nature for him now.
As far as standouts go, Allen was far from the headliner. He struggled with foul trouble and sat for most of the first half, as an onslaught of three pointers kept the Hokies afloat. Fellow senior Zach LeDay lead the way with an efficient 19 points and eight rebounds. Fellow point guard Justin Robinson drove the offense in one of his best performances of the season.
But as has been the case for much of the last two months, it all came back to Allen. Because despite LeDay's post presence and a hot night from behind the arc (12-22, 55% as a team), the Hokies could never pull away. And when guard Marcquise Reed gave the Tigers a two point lead with 0:22 to play, Tech's offensive explosion seemed moot.
But Allen answered.

And with his clutch response, this haunted program is on the verge of their first NCAA Tournament berth for the first time in a decade (more on that in just a second). They head to Boston College on Saturday, before finishing the regular season with back-to-back games in Blacksburg.
"That was our 15th game in the ACC and nine have been decided by six points or less. That was Clemson's 11th loss, eight have been decided by five points or less," head coach Buzz Williams said after the game.
"The line, obviously, is very thin, but maybe almost invisible for the most part. The value of every possession is so monumental and, with the complexion of our roster the way it is, whatever the adjective is in the thesaurus above monumental, that's what it is for us. Incredibly grateful and thankful because it could easily be the other way."
The margin may be tight, but right now it seems like the team is flying high. And with the last second shots falling like they have, who can blame them?

One not-so-quick thought
Over the last decade, Virginia Tech fans have learned two things. Their football team will probably demolish Virginia, and their basketball team probably won't make the NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies last went dancing in 2007. A senior heavy squad finished third in the ACC, with wins over top ranked North Carolina at home, and #5 Duke on the road. They secured a five seed, and lost in the second round. Here's a brief rundown of each year since:
2007-08: Too little, too late. After starting 14-11, the Hokies won five of their last seven in a frantic hurdle towards the postseason. A win over first place UNC in the ACC Tournament semi-finals would have probably given them enough to make the field, but Tyler Hansbrough and Tyler Hansbrough's stupid face made sure that didn't happen.
2008-09: This snakebitten group lost four non-conference games by four points or less. Despite this, they still made it to Valentine's Day 16-7 (sound familiar?). Tech then promptly lost six of their last seven to end the year at 17-13, and were knocked out of the ACC Tournament by Hansbrough for the second time in a row. With two good wins and a boatload of recent losses, the Fighting Greenbergs were left to the NIT.
2009-10: Everyone remembers the pain from the next year, but '09-10 may have been even worse. The Hokies beat a ranked Wake Forest team on February 16th to improve to 21-4. They lost three straight after that, and then lost to last place Miami in the first round of the conference tournament.
But still, no team had even been left out of the tournament with 10 ACC wins. Especially with victories over other bubble teams like Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest, they'd be fine, right?
2010-11: Ah yes, the classic snub everyone remembers. After beating Maryland on February 15th, the Hokies were 17-7 and in search of one last signature win to all but guarantee a spot in the tournament. 11 days later, they got it:
Alas, Tech dropped their last two after beating the Blue Devils, placing them firmly on the bubble. But the group rallied back. As the six seed in the ACC Tournament, the Hokies won two games to get to the semi-finals.
A signature win, tied for fourth in the conference, and a mini-run in the tournament? It had to be the year.
Nah. It was the beginning of the end for Greenberg, as he started to spout conspiracies like a message board poster.
Greenberg was so shocked, so angered by the latest NCAA snub that he launched into a rant that included a bit of a conspiracy theory Sunday night at the team's practice facility.
"You almost wonder if someone in that room has their own agenda and that agenda doesn't include Virginia Tech," he said, referring to the NCAA tournament selection committee. "I totally wonder it. What I'd like to know is if there's ever been a team that's won nine games in the ACC and played the nonconference schedule that we played and beat a No. 1 seed and still didn't get in. I'd love to see the research on that."
2011-16: (Takes deep breath) Greenberg got fired. Montrezl Harrell decommitted. James Johnson got hired. Dorian Finney-Smith transferred. Robert Brown transferred. Losing happened. Recruiting plummeted. James Johnson got fired. Buzz Williams took over a dumpster fire whose best player was a 5'9" gunner. The team got better.
Disguised in a veil of pain and agony, however, is a lesson for this iteration of Hokie basketball. Buzz's bunch came into mid-February 16-7, with things trending downwards. Prior to the game against UVA at home, Tech had lost three of four and found themselves squarely on the bubble for the first time all year.
Look back at all of those Greenberg snubs. Three different times those squads rolled into mid-February at about the same point as this one. And the reason all three were left out? They couldn't finish down the stretch.
No one on the selection committee will say that recent performance is a criteria when considering at-large bids. But it's human nature to lean towards the schools who leave the best impression most recently. As a committee member, it's probably tough to talk yourself into a bubble team who lost seven of their last nine (Tech in '09), four of their last six (Tech in '10), or followed up their best win by getting blown out at home (Tech in '11).
There's still room for chance, but Buzzketball has done the exact opposite. They've saved some of their best basketball for the end of the year. And should this trend continue, they'll avoid those Selection Sunday anxieties we all know so well.

Comments
Someone needs to photoshop Seth Allen's head on the gif of Sam Cassell doing the big balls dance and make that the header image.
Greenberg was right. We totally got jobbed in 2011. That shit was so rigged. Though, if we didn't get snubbed like that, we probably wouldn't have ended up with Buzz.
via GIPHY
The arrival of Buzz, followed by the 3 year build of this team. We all be like:
I was at that Duke game, and yeah I thought we were in after that too. But damn, if that team was going to do one thing to screw it all up, it was to get blown out by bad BC and Georgia Tech teams at home the next two games, and that's exactly what they did. I was mad we didn't get in, but at the same time I felt we left ourselves without much of a leg to stand on after those final two games.
That's true but VCU had lost 4 of their last 5 regular season games including 2 blowout losses at home to ODU and George Mason.
Yes, they went on a run to the Final Four after getting in. But no, they had no business getting in over us. And yes I'm still bitter.
And don't forget they proceeded to lose to ODU again in the CAA tournament
How many times have I said Seth Allen is the best?
It's a lot.
And still not enough.
2011 is a big reason I refuse to believe we're in until I see our name on a bracket.
Sure, all the Joe Lunardi's think 3/4 the ACC will get in, but if Selection Sunday comes and they only pick 6 or 7 ACC teams and we wind up on the outside looking in, I won't be surprised.
I hate to do this...with Seth Dooley leaving the football team, the torch is being passed to Dooley's namesake.
Seth Allen fucks.
I approve of this message.
And after he leaves at the end of the year, Seth LeDay
Am I the only one who didn't realize (until this morning) that Zach's brother is on the squad? Where the hell have I been? And do we have a good nickname for him yet? Like LeDay 2: LeDay Harder or LeDuece or LeDouble and does anyone know if more brothers exist? I think you guys know how I feel about recruiting dudes with many little brothers.
Speaking of, did you guys know that Evan Royster (Penn St RB, played with Eddie Royal and Sean Glennon at Westfield HS) was the youngest of FOUR brothers from Virginia and we got none of them? One brother was a WR at Stanford and I don't think either of the others played college football. Can't believe that, Frank LOVED the buy one, get (one/two/three) free deals.
I can't speak to Evan or the other two, but Brandon (the Stanford WR) was the #1 player in the state and recruited hard by VT as a RB. IIRC, it came out that the mom hated VT and had no respect for the academic programs at Tech. That pretty much ended that and he ended up going to Stanford over UVA and pretty much not doing anything on the football field.
It was pretty much the same thing as Thomas Jones/Julius Jones back in the 90's. They were SW Virginia guys, but sometimes VT just isn't a good fit for the family.
The Barber twins, too. VT was never in running for them due to family feelings.
Tiki still has a mad on for Virginia Tech. Listen to his radio show some mornings...
He acts like VT got him pregnant and left him for a younger version of him.
FTFY
Literally, the source of the original "Dear Brandon" letters.
Old school recruiting at the dawn of the internet age.
Hold up. What are these Dear Brandon letters you speak of?
It used to be the running joke on VT message boards (17 years ago) that any "love letters" to recruits were "Dear Brandon" letters.
LeDay 2: Electric Boogaloo
I think I prefer LilDay
Also what class will Darren Evan's son be in because I already want him at VT.
Post game Buzz interview for those who are interested. We're so lucky to have him.
I love Buzz.
Also with this win....
VT 19-8 (8-7)
UVA 18-9 (8-7)
Glad I waited until Seth Allen season
Bwahahahahahahaha
God, Seth Allen really sucks, huh?
Watching the Duke game highlights, man I'd take Jeff Allen on this team. Buzz probably wouldn't be able to put up with all his boneheaded mistakes though.
Anyway, great win last night and Seth Allen is the man!
Don't downgrade the Little Donut. He made a lot of bonehead plays for sure, but he was also very steady when we needed him.
He has a Jeff Allen with a better attitude on the way, but you have to wait until 2019.

Seth Allen is an example of what make basketball so interesting. A good basketball coach knows his team individually and their strengths and weaknesses and fits the pieces together to make perfect puzzle. Allen is the cold-blooded alpha dog scorer and will play defense when another alpha steps on the court, but will sometimes pass on the dirty work to get in position for another scoring opportunity. You need this type of player for instances like last night. These guys have no reservations about taking the last shot and have a short memory for misses, they play 40 one-minute games every night.
I think I have this as well. I can barely remember any of Seth Allen's misses this year
On TechTalkLive on Monday night, Buzz called Allen a "recovering bad shot addict." That's beautifully put.
When he takes good shots, we all love him. When he takes a fast break and turns an ill-advised pocket pass with 1 min left into a turnover, we scream in horror.
You live by the Seth Allen, you die by the Seth Allen. We've been wounded enough over the years, nice to see his game mature to this level.
Chauncey Billups thinks Seth Allen is the real Mr. Big Shot
I know everyone is gushing about Seth Allen, and rightfully so, but Justin Robinson deserves some love as well. He had himself a hell of a game. I don't think we're even in a position for Seth to hit that shot without JRob's play last night.
It was his best game of the season. After the Clarke injury was announced, I talked on the podcast about LeDay's offense possibly improving (it has) but I didn't mention Robinson's. It makes sense, he and Allen are now the only playmakers. He may just be one of those point guards whose confidence grows when he has the ball and makes the decision on every possession, as opposed to just being a cog in the offense.
He's starting to heat up just when we need him.
He'd been in a funk for most of ACC play this season, so it's good to see Robinson making big plays again.
J Rob's getting some seriously good experience this year, especially in ACC play. I expect him to be quite the PG for us moving forward
2 more and we dancing
Where is this idea that we haven't done enough come into play? Really, avoid defeat against Boston College and we're a lock.
Personally, I've learned my lesson saying that too many times with the Greenberg teams. Nothing's a lock until I see it on Selection Sunday and I can start filling out my VT wins it all bracket. As soon as I start to expect it, some feisty mid major team with a much worse regular season resume gets an at large and goes to the final four while we get to host a game or two in the not-in tournament
...or a dog-crap UGA team wins the SEC tournament and steals VT's spot in the tourney...
That still burns me up.
Wow, yeah, I forgot about them too, but at least we knew they were going to be there before the official Selection Sunday announcement. I was so burnt up over VCU getting in and my VCU friends all on spring break drunkenly calling me to talk shit about it that all of my hate was focused on the Rams
When you've experienced being 23-8 and 21-11 after the ACC tourney and been left out both times, nothing is a lock.
3-0 when my 3 year old and I do the Hokie Pokie before the game. UVA, Pittsburgh and Clemson. Sorry we missed the Louisville game.
If we don't get in, we know who to blame
Brian, the writing was sublime.
For my money, Allen is that dude who isn't your first choice to play beer pong with at the start of the party, but by midnight he's hitting every clutch shot. He has been on fire down the stretch for the Hokies this season. That's not a knock on him, but a credit to how his confidence and ability have elevated him from an-ACC caliber player to a bad motherfucker.
More to the point:
I have to once again say: "Thanks, Maryland!"
And now I go into hybernation mode, where I don't really celebrate anything very loudly until I hear that VT has been selected for the dance.
I'll just sort of smile and tip my hat when VT wins, and assume nothing.
I have a lot of love for this team. They keep fighting through adversity and are definitely a TEAM. Even if we only go 2-1 (Miami) down the stretch that still leaves us with 21 wins in a deep ACC. At the very minimum, we will have a better record than LOLUVA.
I'm too lazy to look at everyone else's schedule and make my own predictions, but let's assume we get 2 of 3. What's our ACC tourney seed looking to be? Somewhere 6-8?
Is it even realistic to hope for us to jump to 4 and get the double bye if we go 3-0?
Double bye is not possible...we need both Florida State and Notre Dame to lose out. I don't see a team full of Seth Allen's and Sam Rogers on their schedule, so I think it's safe they each get a win. If we win out, I believe we'll get no lower than 6th. Considering we're above LOLUVA and Syracuse right now with the same record, I assume we have the tiebreakers.
Why do we have the tiebreak against UVA? We traded games. I dunno how the ACC tiebreak system works when you have the same in conference record and the same head to head record. Is it by overall record?
Double Edit: My question here is if they go 0-2 vs UNC, and we only went 0-1, does that count as a better record against UNC?
Answer:
Link to Tiebreakers/Procedures
The tiebreakers don't make sense, that's how you know it's the ACC
Triple Edit: It all depends on who the top teams in the ACC are at the end of the season. It would help us if Duke was at the top by the end of the season
bring back firefly!
Because we're also tied with Syracuse. Among all tied teams, we are 2-1 (1-0 against Syracuse, 1-1 against UVA). Syracuse is 1-1 (1-0 against UVA, 0-1 against VT). UVA is 1-2 (1-1 against VT, 0-1 against Syracuse). Chances are, we won't still be tied with both at the end of the season, and it'll come down to who else we're tied with and possibly down to the order of the top few seeds.
If the season ended today, they'd have the 7 seed. There's a realistic chance they jump Miami (finishes Duke/@VT/@FSU) to move up to 6. That's about as high as they can get, because they lose tiebreakers to Florida State and Notre Dame.
Of the three teams tied at 8-7 in conference, Tech has an easier finish (@BC/Miami/Wake) than Syracuse (Duke/@Louisville/GT) and about as easy as UVA (@NCST/UNC/Pitt).
So it's look like 6-8, with 6th and 7th more likely.
I had forgotten about the pain of those latter Greenberg years. Every year I thought "they snubbed us the last few times, this time we HAVE to be in." And every year we weren't in. Rage inducing stuff. So I'd like to Believe, but I will hold off on that line of thought until after the ACCT.
Also, motion to start calling Seth Allen SMFA.
The biggest pains of those later Greenburg years, was getting snubbed then washing out in the first or second round of the NIT. We should have won the damn thing every time we were snubbed to rub it in their noses.
Current mood:

All-time VT gif right here
WHY HAVE WE NOT BEEN USING THIS GIF MORE!?!?!?!?
I DONT KNOW! DOES ANYONE HAVE A GIF OF WHEN HE RISES OUT OF THE HOTTUB WITH A SNORKEL ON?
Literally jumped out of my chair when he hit that three...such. big. balls.
After watching this team before Clark's injury and after, I think this is a credit to great coaching and the team buying in to Buzz' message. There were stretches in games when it was unsure what the offense would be doing and they relied heavily at times on Clark doing Clark things and attacking the basket, or running a one man fast break. With an already thin bench, Clark's injury could be disaster for a team that was still finding itself. But Buzz has told his team that Clark is not coming back and guys need to step up. You can see it in Bibbs' game, Outlaw and Hill getting more aggresive, Jrob going into attack mode and running the point, LeDay doing LeDay things and stealing minutes with Sy. Seth Allen knows this team needs his scoring and has taken being aggressive and combined it with being smart.
They could have folded up shop and packed it in, but they went the other way and decided to fight . Look at the L-Ville lose to show you how much things have changed. Earlier in this season, I could see that being a 10-20 point loss, but instead was a battle for the entire 40.
I like where this entire team is at.
I couldn't watch the game unfortunately. What happened on Clemson's last possession?
They tried to chuck it all the way down court like there was .8 left and our guys ended up with it.
Yeah, I didn't understand the Hail Mary with almost 4 seconds left. Tigers had plenty of time to inbound to someone crossing at full speed. then have plenty of time to drive to the basket, assuming they get the pass off. At least a floater from the FT line, and pray that someone commits a stupid foul.
That was boneheaded. At some point you gotta blame the coach for all these close losses Clemson has faced.
My not-so-bold prediction is that they do not win out, do not make the big dance, do not pass go, do not collect $200, but they do fire Brad Brownell.
How Seth Allen got home last night. NSFW
[ mod edit: NSFW. Second of these South Park GIFs that I've had to nuke today. Stop it. ]
Yeah, uh... NSFW?
I'll start this comment by saying that it doesn't bother me that stuff gets censored around here, but I gotta point this out:
stanrandy (duh) marsh's enlarged, cartoon balls are nsfw, but the clip of the dude's actual balls coming out of his shorts on the people running fast animated-gif thread is chill?well, one of them, my boss could stand behind me watching it for 10 minutes without figuring out what was going on or why the guy fell over. The other one features a massive set of testicles...
I really don't care in the grand scheme of things, and I really appreciate what VTGM does to keep things copacetic around here, but I'll just say that I figured it out in about 10 seconds
Can't wait to put that star on my mom's fridge. She'll be so happy about my ability to recognize ballsacks
I'll outright admit that I just didn't catch that. I do what I can but I miss stuff, especially when comments are posted in large volume and I haven't checked in for a while. I didn't watch the GIF all the way until the end and it's so quick that it's hard to even tell what's going on. Sometimes in the interest of time, I am only quickly going through posts and when I see a GIF and get the gist of it, I scroll on. Guess I need to have a little more
That thread devolved pretty quickly, I can't blame you haha
I think Fuck Tyler Hansbrough is a basketball equivalent to Fuck Matt Ryan in football
Happy Seth is the best Seth
Satch is stoked.
Just channeling his inner Dwayne Lawson
You could really tell he was gone way before last season was over.
Only thing that worried me about the game yesterday was how Outlaw disappeared after the first half. He stepped up big early on, with two big triples and a blow by the defender take to the basket but come the second half he had reverted to the Outlaw of earlier on. We absolutely need him to step up to about where Clarke was contribution wise to succeed over our last few games of the regular season.
Jerry Palm of CBS has us as a 7 seed playing against.... wait for it.... Arkansas.
so...they'll have an "insurmountable" lead at halftime and then go on a 20 minute scoring drought? I can live with that.
