Are the Hokies in?

I've heard and read people say the win over BC secured Virginia Tech's trip to do the dance.

The bubble is weak this year, and a .500 finish in the best conference in America goes a long way, but color me skeptical. In the worse case scenario, Tech has a Greenbergian collapse down the stretch and loses to Miami, Wake Forest and its ACC Tournament opener, I would be shittin' bricks on Selection Sunday. What do you think, are we win with the wins on the resume now, or is it still too close for comfort?

Edit: I forgot to protect this thread from jinxes.

Maybe.

But I am fairly confident we will make the ACC tournament, unlike when we were being screwed in the BIG Least. So at least we will make then post season. Any win the Wake game is a plus.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

For the past decade, the answer to that question is no. The answer will always be no until I actually see our name on a bracket.

Back in the 2010-11 season, I thought it was a foregone conclusion that we were going to get in on Selection Sunday, so I didn't even bother watching the show. I figured no matter how low our RPI there was no way the win against Duke and making it to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament would keep us out. I read through the first round matchups like three times thinking I kept missing our name, only to find out we were playing in the NIT. Not making it into the tournament makes it very tough to go back and watch the Duke highlights, because I have to listen to Dick Vitale saying (yelling) there's no way we could be denied a spot.

Just because an expert say we're in does not mean I will believe it until it actually happens. This has been one hell of a season, nothing short of the most exciting season since 2006-07 (the last time we made the tournament). Anything less than an NCAA Tournament bid would be disappointing, and until I see it happen I'm not going to take anyone's word for it.

Don't forget this Lunardi douche was one of the main figures that kept us out of it that year

I knew when we lost our last two games after the win vs. then #1 Duke, we weren't going to get in at 19-10

I too remember the 2010-2011 season, and I'm willing to say unless we have another injury we're in, it's just a matter of determining what seed we get at this point.

I've always hated the injury logic. That doesn't seem fair to the rest of the players. It would likely hurt our chances of winning any games but we would still deserve to be in the dance.

If god forbid, Allen and Leday blow out their knees before the tournament I don't think the team would be a tournament quality team anymore, so why would we be deserving of a spot?

Also, if this actually happens I will never post on TKP ever again.

Don't think the committee really considers it anymore. I think it was Colorado who made it 2/3 years ago as a single digit seed after their only good player tore his ACL. I think the team was below .500 after the injury (but had some big wins before he got hurt) and promptly got obliterated in their first game

There's no real chance we miss it. Playing for seeding right now.

That dude has been high on VT all season

As of now, I think we are 100% in, but there are still 3 potential losses out there but I think if we win just one of the last 2 regular season games, we are in no matter what happens in the ACCT

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I think a total of 2 more wins and I will rest easy on Selection Sunday. Whether that's closing out 2-0 or 1-1 and an ACCT win.

Miami and Wake Forest aren't bad losses. Miami just beat UVA and Duke, and Wake Forest is right on the bubble.

Even if we loss both of those games (which I find hard to believe given how this team plays at home), we should pick up a game in the ACCT, based on how our seeding is looking.

All that being said, even if we do go on a three game skid, we're in. I know that everyone here is skeptical because of what happened in the past, and that's fine. But the bubble this year is incredibly weak.

I think our ceiling for the NCAA tournament is a 6 seed -- I think we get there with 4 wins. If we lose 3 straight, I think we're looking at an 11 seed.

If we lose the next 3 and are the 11 seed then I imagine the committee would just love to send VT to Dayton. Maybe ESPN will send Greenberg as well.

I'd feel a lot more confident with one more win. There's too many moving parts, several unforeseen conference tourney winners, some bubble teams win several more games, etc

Win over Miami, and VT is in regardless of Wake or ACCT. Miami is top-40 RPI.

Loss to Miami, win over Wake and ACCT win, VT is in.

Other than that, it's not guaranteed, but still likely in. A lot would have to happen to keep a top-40 RPI team in the top RPI conference to not make it in.

There should be no way in hell Syracuse makes it in over VT, unless goes on a crazy tear, beating UofL, GT, and a run in the ACCT and VT goes 0-3.

Update: Just checked the RPI and didn't realize WF was so high. VT is @ 38; Miami @ 34; and WF @ 44. Thus, a single win against either team should virtually lock them up. Losses against both wouldn't be that detrimental, but a win in the ACCT would be necessary to feel good about it. FWIW, VT, Miami and WF are projected to be in the tournament in virtually every projection I've seen.

I'm not comfortable with this type of discussion, even if the signs are positive.

Looking forward to Selection Sunday.

As of right now, every major projecting service has us in the field of 68 (per Bracket Matrix). We're averaging about an 8-1/2 seed. A few services have us up at a 6 seed, and one has us playing the play-in game as a 12 seed.

Without any games left against teams with a high RPI (save for the opening game of the ACCT), it's very hard to imagine a scenario in which we don't make the tournament.

Auto-leg for the Cerrano gif. I can only add this:

and this, just for good measure:

― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

For some reason Lunardi bumped us down to a 10 seed in the dubious "last four byes" column despite our string of recent wins. I guess the UVA and Duke wins are starting to lose their luster.

That being said, can't believe we wouldn't be in and not in the play-in games if we just win 1 of our next three. Still, let's make a little run in the ACC tourney and see how high of a seed we can get!

Let's Go...

During the Notre Dame/GT game last night they kept bringing up that NCState was GT's only bad loss.

Knock on wood, but that's gotta do it right? Knocking of ANOTHER ranked team? I love Chris Clarke, but it almost seems like everybody else is trying harder (especially on the glass) in his absence.

And Outlaw was unconscious tonight. That was ridiculous.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

Our offense becomes better because we substitute him with a sniper. Spaces the floor better and doesn't allow them to play help defense when we drive to the hole. Defensively, well, Outlaw is not great on the ball. But we shall forgive him if he hits 8 threes a game going forward.

Always choose joy.

we shall forgive

Can I get an "Amen"?

Amen!

Yes.

Keep winning baby, I wanna smell the Sweet 16

uva sucks

Jerry Palm (whoever that is) with CBS Sports (I just randomly clicked a bracketology link in Google results, I have no idea which source is best) has us playing as a #7 seed in Sacramento. The #10 seed opponent? Arkansas. That worked out well last time for the Hokies....

Edit: I like that bracket. Play UCLA next (with any luck) and wipe that smile off LaVar Ball's face. That dad is a moron. I know, I know...one game at a time.

Assuming we get in, I want to stay as far away from Lonzo Ball as possible

I was really hoping for Indy Greenville or Orlando.
I can't get to Sacramento.

Interesting sidenote right now, our third best win and third worst loss RPI-wise is against the same team (#33 Miami)

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

third worst loss RPI-wise

I mean.... we only have 8 losses...
