Bucky Hodges might be a good fit for Patriots

This article talks about how Bucky can be a good fit for Patriots and complement Gronkowski.

He looks as though he could be a very good complimentary target to Rob Gronkowski as he too is a red zone mismatch. Bucky Hodges will have to improve his blocking, something he can do over time with good coaching, but he will have to be prepared to step up to the plate if/when Rob Gronkowski misses some time.

The article also talks about his size (duh!) and versatility.

There is a lot to like about Bucky Hodges. His size and speed for one but also his understanding of offensive schemes from a quarterbacks stand point. What sticks out too is his ability to play all over the field. Versatility, as we all know, is greatly valued by Bill Belichick and his coaching staff. Belichick will never put a player in a position where he is asked to do something he can't so they would certainly play to Bucky Hodges strengths, but the more he can do the better and he looks to have that skill set.

One thing for sure is that if he ends up going to play in Boston he will at least get a ring.

I hate everything about the Pats. If he does end up there, let's just hope he doesn't kill 5+ people like the last person that complimented Gronk.

Just tell Bucky not to say anything nice about Gronk and we'll be okay

Ehhh I'll allow it. I was thinking I said "drafted" by the pats but my brain farted trying to figure out the compliment/complement thing

Well in a nutshell, it's the way they go about it and the fan base that supports it. I guess I am what New England fans call "a hater." Did I do that right?

With the luck our NFL players have, if he gets drafted by the Pats, Brady and Belichick retire after the 2018 season, and he's saddled with an offense that is QB by Jay Cutler and playcalled by Lane Kiffin.

Loeffler's in Boston......although, I think his system can actually work in the NFL.

If you are a fan of another team in their division, I get it, because rivalries. But it's pretty ridiculous the reactions people are having to this. I hate the Packers, and I don't want Hokies to go to the Packers because I'm a Minnesota fan, but I still rooted for Aaron Rouse and Jarrett Boykin when they were there.

Methinks you underestimate people's disdain for the Patriots.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I don't underestimate it, I think it's stupid and misdirected.

Not trying to be a dick, I'm legitimately curious: where should it be directed instead?

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:

I'm guessing he's saying you can hate a team without hating all players on the team

Or maybe he's saying that "hate" is a useless emotion. It bears no fruit whatsoever. Wasted energy, really. What use is it to "hate" stuff?

Onward and upward

This is very true.

To me, sports hate and real life hate are two completely different things. Hating on your rivals is one of many reasons I find following sports to be so fun.

Sure, I get that. But I believe there are people out there who more than just "sports hate" the Patriots. I don't intend to speak for Chris but I believe he's mostly referring to the people who legitimately despise the Patriots above and beyond the sports realm.

It's one thing to light heartedly rib fans for other sports teams. But to get actually angry with and aggressive towards a certain team and it's fans is going too far IMO.

Onward and upward

That's exactly what I'm saying. Having some schadenfreude when your rival loses a big game, getting into an argument with someone you know about a sport, trash talk, or cheering against them fervently during a game is all a part of sports. But if the thought of another team/player legitimately affects your mood at the mere mention of their/its name, or leads you to wish actual harm/real life misfortune on them is a different story. I think there's a lot of gray area, but it's pretty easy to tell when you've crossed the line if you take a step back and evaluate.

VPIHokieME made a great point above, whether he is joking or not, but if you've got that hate and don't care for his advice then this: NFL wise? If it's not your rival, direct your hate towards the NFL brass and Team Ownership. They hold all the power over the players and NFLPA and it feels like every week there is a story about how a team can wiggle their way out paying a player "guaranteed" money, the term at this point is almost laughable in relation to the NFL. Additionally, the whole Tom Brady vs. Goodell thing is a perfect example, every step of the way as lack of evidence was revealed, it became more and more obvious that it wasn't even about the deflated footballs, it was a classic example of the NFL proving it can flex it's muscles against the players and the NFLPA and that they are powerless to stop it. Just wait until the next time the collective bargaining agreement comes up, how "fair" it is when the players only avenue to gain leverage requires that they don't get paid, while the ownership and NFL brass keep racking in the millions. Eventually the players will cave, and we will once again have a unilaterally beneficial CBA for the teams and the players will be at their mercy.

I wasn't joking

Onward and upward

I didn't think so, but I also didn't want to speak for you.

I had a big long thing typed out about the origins of my disdain for the Pats. But I read it over and it made me sound like a crazy person, and an even crazier beard. So instead I shall say that I agree with you, and I have not supported the NFL financially for a few years now. It may only be a drop in the ocean but I haven't liked where they're headed, and this year was the first time since I was small that I didn't watch any games at all. Not even the Super Bowl. Now if I could just let go of that damn Eagles fandom...

I'm with you beard. So here's my crazy man rant about the Pats......It wasn't always this way. I rooted for NE when they played GB in the SB when Bledsoe was QB. It changed for me with "The Tuck Rule". A bogus rule that I personally believe was made up on the field. That one bogus penalty is the basis of their dynasty. Then you add that they were caught cheating to beat StL and you have the groundwork for a lot of universal hate....

Huge former Skins fan here... letting go of the team and the NFL years ago, along with fantasy football, was absolutely wonderful. Couldn't recommend it more. So much $$$ and time saved.

It's a win/win situaiton...for VT.

Like him or not Belichick does a fantastic job at getting the most out of players and with Brady throwing to him it's a huge win for Bucky. Bucky succeeds and VT has another dominate NFL player to add to the list, which in turn increases the school notoriety and recruiting. Win for Bucky, win for VT.

I see this all the time. Does auto-correct incorrectly replace the adjective dominant with the verb dominate?

Also yes, Bucky to Pats would be a highly probable win. Hope it plays out. Belichick may be an ass, but he's the Nick Saban of the NFL.

If true, I hope he learns a lot, improves himself and his game, and then gets the fuck out of town to a team I can root for his success.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

God I hate the Patriots.

But best of luck to Bucky if they do pick him up...better than another NFC East team.

I hate them too and won't argue about it. I have hated them since the old AFL when they were the Boston Patriots.

Fuck Babe Perrelli.

That's some old school hate right there.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Tough to argue that he wouldn't be successful there. Would be nice to see more Hokies win Super Bowls. Catching passes from Brady would be as good a job as any.

The Dude Abides

Wholeheartedly agree, but it would also be nice to not see the Patriots win more Super Bowls.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Until Belichek retires, get used to the patriots winning SB's. Brady is important, but not as important as the coach.

Only a guy who knows all of the jargon & cliches and seems to think real football is played on paper would see the Patriots seeing Hodges as fit for the Patriots. I can just imagine Tom Brady's WTF reaction the first time he hits Hodges in stride and he gets zero YAC because he fell down untouched after making the catch.

I'd be shocked to see Hodges drafted by the Patriots.

Bill likes his nightmare match-ups. Gronk is 6'7" of guaranteed injury, and Marty Bennett is taking the money in free agency.

But you are right, I dont think Hodges will be on the Patriots radar. His draft stock is probably too high for them to bite, he spent the last few seasons playing a TE-WR hybrid position, and doesnt run block worth shit.

I'd buy a God's Gift jersey, being both VT grad and salty new englander.

As a diehard Pats fan who thinks the other 31 fanbases can eat crow and die alone, all I really want is a Sam Rodgers Pats jersey.

a Sam Rodgers Pats jersey.

This will literally never happen.

Sadly true. But we can buy a Sam Rogers Pats Jersey. I can see the Pat's loving Sam's versatility and leadership qualities.

I'd give it a little better chances than the Patriots drafting Bucky Hodges.

I could see the Patriots having interest in Rodgers as an undrafted free agent to try out for special teams and depth at RB. He can run, decent in pass-block and can catch passes out the backfield. The patriots will keep a position player who excels on special teams and has a high character. See Matt Slater, who has eaten a WR slot and been a team captain for like 10 years, just to play special teams. I think Bellichick will appreciate his toughness, character, versatility and I want a Sam Rodgers jersey featuring Pat the Patriot damnit!

There's no "D" in Rogers. He doesn't need it since he can impregnate you with just a look.

Sam Rogers and Tracey Morgan, separated at birth

Other than Hodges' size, there is absolutely nothing that fits the Patriots mold.

Why so everyone outside of BASTAN hates him?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

There is absolutely NO WAY that the Patriots would even consider Bucky. I like him a lot, but there's so much working against Hodges in terms of fit, skill set, and roster depth for him to be picked up by the Pats. Taking Bill's Rutgers fetish out of the equation, it still seems far fetched that Bucky could fit either of the distinctive roles in Belichik's offense; a physically dominant TE with good hands, or speedy route runners. Couple that logic with the Patriots over-stocked wide reciever/ tight end cabinet with such names as Gronk, Edelman, Amendola, and newcomer Malcolm Mitchell; where at best he would be a backup project. I hope he gets drafted to a Jags-type team where he can actually develop and get some playing time.

This thread takes a big hit after the deal the Patriots made today with Indianapolis. 4th round pick for TE Dwayne Allen and a seventh round pick.

The Pats are building their receiving corps like Frank used to build his QB corps. Watch them still draft Bucky just because and run the ever elusive 4 TE set.
