I love this site.

Ut Prosim in word and deed, Hokies helping Hokies.

"Exit light..."

I think it would be pretty awesome for VTFootballGrad to land someone here a job. Hope it works out.

(Ancillary, would y'all be interested in a Virginia Tech jobs board? That is to say, are there enough Hokies who read TKP in a position to hire, or work for companies that frequently hire.)

If there aren't right now, as soon as word gets out there will be. Would also be a great spot for us to link out Networking events throughout the region for people that are currently looking for employment to do so specifically through VT and TKP.

Honestly, before you responded last night, I thought that is would be amazing to have a job board on here. People come here for all VT related things, and we all want to help other Hokies out. It could be just another section under forum.

What's
Important
Now

I could get behind such a thing. As an engineer who moved up to the DMV a few years ago from Asheville, NC, the job search was stressful to say the least. Networking is really the best way to get a job, I've learned. That being said, and I hate to be cryptic but for various reasons which may become apparent at a later date I have to be, I will not be looking for another job any time soon but will definitely be back on the market in about 2.5 years. I would love to have a nice Hokie friendly place to conduct some of that searching.

You have fully piqued my interest.

That's when his program will have deposited enough pennies from bank round-off errors to be able to buy a new identity and start over.

"Exit light..."

Sounds like a one-way ticket to Federal Pound-You-in-the-Ass Prison, to me

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

you won't have to wait the full 2.5 years to find out. Give it about a month or so and I'll let you all in

Onward and upward

things that take 2.5 years (from now):
getting a master's degree
serving a term in congress
serving a 30 month jail sentence

something is missing from that list. namely, what I'm hiding from ya'll

Okay, so today I quit my job. I am joining the Peace Corps with my wife. That is the big news....haha

So come September of 2019 I'll be back in the States and looking for work. It would be great to connect with Hokies

Onward and upward

congrats! u know where you're being placed?

Thank you! We are going to Uganda. We don't know specific location yet. There is 3 months of pre-service training (PST) in country (I think it will be in/around Kampala, Uganda's capital) and we won't find out our actual posting until we've been in PST for some period of time. We will be serving/living together though, which is good.

Onward and upward

Uganda is a wonderful place. A Rolex for breakfast and Luwombo for lunch. You'll quickly know what those are, trust me.

We are going to Uganda

Wait a minute, I think I've seen this musical...

If you cross paths with the folks at The Mango Project I know one of the main guys there in country. His name is Micah and I know him from back in Middle School. He's a good dude and if you want me to try to connect you let me know.

It won't be until June but I will probably share our blog on TKP for those who may be interested in checking it out.

Yeah the timing is perfect. No house. No kids. Neither of us really satisfied with our current career paths. Want to do something good and fulfilling and now seemed like the perfect time.

Will you be able to use your degree and training? What will she be doing?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I will probably very loosely use my degree and training. My degree is in Mechanical Engineering. I have some experience in design and project management (design from manufacturing industry, project management from construction industry) so to be quite honest my qualifications aren't extremely relevant. I'm going to be a Health Volunteer so I'll be working on capacity building with focus on water sanitation and HIV-AIDS stuff. I might use my background for constructing hand washing stations and commodes but there isn't very much demand for engineering in the Peace Corps.

My wife's background is more relevant. She will be working as an Agri-business Volunteer, so working with farmers and stuff. Her degree is in agricultural economics so it's much more up her alley.

Onward and upward

On the one hand, yeah, that would be great. On the other, that would mean the guy who I was asking for an interview would know exactly how much time I spend on here which could be a no go...

You are a genius. Not only can you now justify why you are on TKP all day but you can write off your membership as part of your networking to recruit. Bravo.

Not an actual recruiter, but I work pretty closely with the recruiting team at an accounting firm. So yes, please give me a reasonable excuse to keep spending way too much time on TKP during the workday :)

Mark me as a yes for a jobs board, the current VT Civil engineering jobs page is a disaster.

I told Joe, I posted this job on the Alumni Job board, and I got no traction at all. I tried to get someone on the phone to maybe promote it to students, and the guy is never at his desk and does not return messages!

If you want to get it out to students, email Kara Lattimer, the CEE undergraduate general advisor. She'll either attach it to her weekly email she sends out to students or send a stand alone email.

Thank you for the help!

Agreed. It's a shame because the civil engineering career fairs are very well run and always have great turnout.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Seriously what a great idea. Who knew that TKP could get better??
I'll be punching out in 5 years and will be looking for a flying/engineering gig, so yes please!

I know I'm a few days late on this, but speaking as an engineer/software developer that may be looking for a job near DC within 6 months, a TKP job board would be pretty awesome.

I have a finger on the pulse of the jobs at my current employer, which could employ Hokies from many different majors. Would be especially useful for new grads and folks with 2-5 years experience. Would love to have more Hokies around here.

I'm currently job hunting myself so I'd be interested in what majors your employer is interested in.

It's local government, so we do a lot of different things. We own our own broadband network too. We don't have any major positions vacant right now, but you never know. It's odd how this place can either be a stepping stone or a retirement gig depending on the position and the person filling it.

Have Joe send you my email and maybe we can connect on LinkedIn and I'll keep you up on anything that comes open if you're interested.

lemme know if your local government needs an epidemiologist

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

I think that's done at a higher level, but if we did employ someone in your profession, the analysis and resulting maps would be amazing!

As a fellow Recruiter, a jobs section would be awesome. I have dozens of clients across the DMV looking for Accounting and Finance professionals. I would love nothing more to get some Hokies in these jobs.

Oh that's been taken care of already. TKP is definitely a "networking group"

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

A jobs board is a great idea for TKP. I've already used TKP to get resume help (Thanks again, GoKartMozart) after graduation, because I feel like the career center is useless unless you are a engineering or business major. I know if I can help a Hokie in any way, I certainly will.

If you play it, they will win.

Thanks man. Enjoying everything but the commute. Mrs. APFOW and I are looking at houses closer to work though.

If you play it, they will win.

I'm not involved with HR per se but I'd be happy to post any opportunities that my employer has available

Happy to support this initiative! Although, not sure if anyone would fall into what I am currently looking for but Hokies deserve first right to any job opportunity I have.

First thing, please note, this position is in the exciting, culturally diverse, exotic megalopolis of Shanghai!

Pros:
You will live in one of the world's premiere cities
Said city is as crazy balls as you make it. (also as expensive/cheap as you make it)
You will get opportunity to travel around China
You will be working for a new venture that will be highly rewarding to its core staff
There are opportunities to meet all kinds of people here from all over the world. My partners are themselves very unique.
If single, there are a plethora of young beautiful/handsome singles here to meet.
You will learn one of the world's oldest languages.

Cons:
You will be far away from family and friends
You will only be able to watch Hokies play in middle of the night
You will get VERY dirty doing this work
China is ... well, polluted. Air, water and soil.

Bonus Pro:
You will be at the forefront of cleaning up that pollution in history's largest environmental market ever! Specifically remediating polluted soil. (mostly heavy metal pollution)

So if you are a soil or environmental engineer (or other engineer with relevant experience) that has 2 - 6 years work experience in soil remediation and looking for something adventurous this may be perfect for you.

let me know if yes and I can do a similar post as this with a larger Job Description.

I don't do any of those things but the chance to work with Fernley means I would go out and get those things just to work with the most interesting Hokie in the world.

Would love having you aboard, but if memory serves correct you've got four kids. You would pay A LOT more for education than what I would be able to pay you.

But I have something in DC with first responders going on. When that gets closer to fruition I will definitely give you a shout.

I'd take a side job as an "expert White guy" I actually saw an ad for this for a Chinese firm. They needed a White middle aged man to pretend to be an expert.

no joke, in my time here I have made over 10k doing this. usually comes with free travel, hotel and a nice, fat envelope full of the Chairman

For some reasons the Chinese are investing heavily into SC and the Myrtle Beach area specifically. We even might get a Chinese themed cultural park.

Imagine you live in a place with over a Billion people and record number of new Billionaires every year. Now imagine this growing wealthy class is basically naive to most things we take for granted, in this case leisure sports. Specifically one that is identifiable as a status point for the wealthy. Now take into consideration that a) Chinese are now travelling worldwide in record numbers every year and spending shit tonnes of money wherever they go; and b) Golf courses in China are highly regulated to the point of prohibiting additional golf courses from being constructed and those existing ones (that are good) are almost completely sold out with lifetime memberships.

You, as an incredibly cash rich corporation which likely has a travel subsidiary underneath you or will create one, see an opportunity to buy up golf courses worldwide and tailor make group Golf travel plans thereby getting almost guaranteed income on flights, hotels, dining, course fees, etc. Now times that by a hundred golf courses or more globally.

Then when China reopens golf course development in China because these companies finally understand proper golf course operations and management and water resource conservation and control, your company will be one of the leaders to get any new project. And you now have a billion consumers to cater too, who by that time will have even more money to spend.

BOOM

I see see that now. Would they invest in our airports and maybe an interstate to Myrtle Beach also, that would be great.

interstate to Myrtle Beach

We'll all be dead before I-73 is completed.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

But when they do, what an awesome recruiting boost for us. An interstate that runs through the Carolinas and straight into Blacksburg.

Maybe with some Chinese investment it will happen faster.

Can you elaborate on why this is? Is it possible to do without getting political?

yep sure can.

It is political, but not divisive

In South Korea, the entire country is getting absolutely ROCKED by one of the largest corruption scandals ever, anywhere. The president has been impeached, many politicians are caught up in it, and nearly every large company in South Korea is involved. South Korea in terms of investment funds (including pension funds, etc) is one of the most cash laden in the world. Typically they are very conservative and deploy capital locally or within existing channels, which tend to be said large South Korean corporations involved in said scandal. So most of those funds are now moving money through secondary funds into USA and other "stable" western markets. Currently I know of a new office in Los Angeles that established a new syndicated fund of over 1 Billion in deployment and they have access to loads more.

In regards to China, there is currently a slate of strict currency controls here for outgoing money (moving cash out of mainland China) but the large SOE's (State Owned Enterprises) are able to invest in large amounts in certain channels including infrastructure which our current administration is putting a priority on in the next 4 years. There are other reasons for other industries but this account for tens of Billions of new investment.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

fat envelope full of the Chairman

This is the greatest slang for any currency I've ever heard

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

In Vitro remediation or removal remediation?

both in-situ and ex-situ applications. brownfields, water bodies and agriculture projects primarily. we also have an all organic agriculture product to revitalize soil after remediation.

I am quite familiar with soil from my childhood days. I know what good soil feels and tastes like and I know what bad soil feels and tastes like. I have extensive experience using said tastes to filter out the bad soil and using the good soil to create things like mud pies. This experience makes me an ideal candidate to come to China to find said beautiful/handsome singles perform the required work

I don't think the healthy lifespan of a Chinese Soil Taster is very long. You'd have to get a lot of "work" done fast.

Hey, you only yolo once

This explains a lot.

"Exit light..."

I think we have a weiner winner! Seriously though, you would be dead in two weeks with this skillset.

The worst that can happen is I lose a couple legs....maybe an arm. Unless there's sand involved, I don't like sand.

Ever get down to Singapore? I found out that is one of many possibilities (aka who knows where the Navy will really send you) to move to in a year or so for 3 yrs. I hear is really nice and western friendly. Kids will only be around 3 and 2 by then. Thanks!

was actually just there last week opening a bank account and doing some meetings. Great city. Very clean. Ordered and lots to do. Great for kids. One of the very best places for food. But it is only a city, so look to go to Bali, Malaysia, Palawan (Philippines), Australia, Thailand, etc for when you get island fever. I know, rough.

You're awesome, thanks Fernley

no worries. if u do get sent there do let me know and I'll see about arranging a business trip down to visit

Will do!

Hey so is there any traction with this jobs board? I think my company (engineering, architecture, surveying) could definitely use a resource like this.

Just wanted to update everyone. I have had someone from The Key Play interview for the position and they are interested in pursuing him further.

I wanted to add, that they need 2 engineers for this project in Virginia Beach, so if anyone else is interested, please feel free to email me!
