OT: LOLUVA Basketball Loses Two Players

The news out of Hooville late last night is that Marial Shayok, their 2nd leading scorer and 5th in minutes played, will be leaving the program. Shayok was a Junior this season

Interesting note from this Roanoke Times Article

Shayok, who committed to Marquette when Buzz Williams was the Golden Eagles' head coach, was released from his letter of intent and signed with Virginia in the spring of 2014.

Also leaving, 3.8ppg/10mpg Jarred Reuter, a sophomore.

Reuter, a 6-7, 245-pound sophomore from Madison, Massachusetts, played in 58 games over two seasons but did not have any starts. He ranked 10th on the team in minutes-played this year at 10.6 per game.

That's over 30 minutes a game and about 13 points per game gone for a team who only managed 66ppg this season. I'm not sure what Tony's next recruiting class looks like, but I really want to believe this means he might actually consider going to another school this offseason

Also, Will Shayok go pro?

I'm guessing no. However, Austin Nichols, the transfer who got kicked off the team after one game this year has signed an agent.

After only averaging 9 pts/game? That would be a very poor decision.

UVA is actually going to be pretty lean at both spots next season unless Bennett pulls in some quality graduate transfers. Shayok's minutes will probably be broken up between Darius Thompson, Deandre Hunter and incoming freshman Marco Anthony.

I anticipate that Kyle Manbun will be taking over the PG duties from Perrantes and be backed up by Devon Hall and Ty Jerome

Isaiah Wilkins is the only SF on the roster but expect him to get breathers from either Marco Anthony or Darius Thompson sliding down.

Reuter will be replaced by a combination of Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff

Center should be Jack Salt backed up by Huff as well.

With all that said, Bennett has three scholarships he could fill so I would expect to see them get at least one more big and one more wing in the fold for next year, most likely in the graduate transfer market.

Unless something drastic changes, Porter will go to Missouri with his dad.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Jerome looks like he will be their best player. They've been calling him the "PG of the future" going back to last summer when they decided to redshirt Huff and Hunter, saying that Jerome had to play so he wouldn't be green taking over PG from Perrantes.

Jerome and Guy are similar players, good shooters where their strength isn't getting to the rim. Hall will be the other key guard and he's pretty good across the board but not someone you need to game plan around. They could really use someone like Bede or Pig Jackson who could break down defenses and kick to Guy/Jerome/Hall. We should trade them one of our guys for Diakite, a guy we could use on the boards and defending the post.

I would guess we see a lot of Jerome/Guy/Hall/Wilkins/Salt lineups with Diakite getting a lot of run in the post. Hunter, Huff and Anthony are unknowns at this point. But if that is your five on the floor, who do you want taking the big shot? There is still zero post offense, so it will be even tougher for those shooters to shake good perimeter defense.

I don't want to get too giddy yet, three openings on the Transfer Market could be a blessing in disguise. They could add the equivalent of Andrew White, Austin Arians and Malcolm Bernard and be a much different but better team.

But my blink is that they are a better team with Shayok and Thompson as options off the bench. They are both flawed offensive players, but on a team of flawed offensive players, it did give them more options.

Shayok seemed like he was poised to be instrumental in the future of this team and seemed to be getting a good number of minutes as well. I did not expect to see him be one of the two transfers, I think they will miss him.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

HAH!

Looks like the decommit curse has spread from Beamerball to Buzzketball

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

After UVA lost at home to Miami on 2/20 (4th straight loss & 2nd straight where they failed to even score 50 pts), Shayok's minutes fell off. Bennett injected Guy and Jerome into the lineup to get more offense and those minutes came mostly at Shayok's expense. Guy/Jerome went from averaging ~30 min per game in ACC play to ~47 min per game. In the same timeframe, Shayok went from averaging ~25 min per game down to ~15 min per game. (Perrantes & Hall each saw a very small decrease of about 1 min less per game after Miami.) Losing 10 min per game is a pretty steep dropoff for a player to swallow. Perrantes is obviously graduating, but Guy & Jerome will see even more increased roles next season, so I think Shayok felt the squeeze. I'm honestly not surprised at all by this decision.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Starting to sound like it could get real ugly in Hooville this offseason.

There are rampant rumors that both Kyle Guy and Darius Thompson are looking to transfer as well, with at least Thompson being speculated by Doug Doherty

for what it's worth, manbun recently tweeted saying he has no intention of leaving

manbun?

Is that a real name?

If so, can we start a meme thread on it, like, yesterday?

Well, his mom probably calls him Kyle, but personally I'll never refer to him as anything but manbun for the rest of his career. There's a Kevin joke to be made here somewhere, but I don't like to waste good TKP jokes on hooville turds

Pretty sure Samurai don't need within arms reach. My comment was in response to both Samurai and Sumo.

I also believe UVA redshirted 2 guys this year that they probably could have used at times. I wouldn't get too excited about this in terms of UVA dropping off next season.

They've already dropped off

i mean yes, and sorry if i put aside my O&M goggles for a second, but if getting to the second round of the NCAA is a "drop off", sign me up.

I'd rather lose close in the first round than only score 39 points in the second round.

Huh, that's a bit of a philosophical question. Would you rather lose game 1 close or win game 1 close then get embarrassed in game 2? I think I'd go with the later.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

I'd rather lose close to a team like Wisconsin in round 1 than win close over UNCW and get embarrassed in round 2. Just my preference.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I'd rather watch my team play an additional game in the tournament regardless. I don't get why people stigmatize a big loss in the tournament so much. Your season is over regardless of how much you win/lose by, I personally wouldn't have cared if we lost by 30 to Villanova if we played hard the whole time. Plus it helps build a culture, shows young guys what they have to do to take the next step. Just my 2 cents

It's certainly a drop off if you recall that LOLUVA got to the Elite 8 last year as a 1 seed.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Both of those guys are included in my roundup which still has UVA searching because experience will be limited across the board and no new talent is a world beater for UVA.

First is Forward Jay Huff but everything I heard on him was that he was less ready for a full schedule than even Sy was for us this season. Tall with a penchant for blocking shots but offensively extremely limited.

Deandre Hunter is the other and he will play on the wing most likely. Good shooter but a step slow defensively.

I fully expect Bennett to find two starters in the grad transfer market.

Huff is from a tiny 1A school in Raleigh and beat up on kids a foot shorter than him.

I imagine he is finding out it's a lot harder to make a post move on someone your own size.

A little bit of a tangent here, but I couldn't help but notice what the quotes said about Jarred Reuter's minutes per game. He was 10th with 10.6 mpg. Our 10th guy averaged 2.8 mpg according to ESPN and we only even used 11 players all season. Really speaks to our lack of depth this year.

Reuter's min per game avg is skewed a bit by the OOC portion of the schedule. Down the stretch he wasn't used nearly as much. In UVA's last 12 games, he only played over 10 min once. In the tourney he didn't play at all in their opening round win over UNCW and got 5 min against UF.

That said, despite that dropoff, he still ended up averaging 10 min per game for the season and your point is spot on. UVA had 2 more bodies in their rotation than we did (3 more after we lost Clarke). Will be nice to (hopefully) play with a full deck next season.

I agree that we lacked depth this year (on paper we will have a ton more depth next year) but I also think that too much depth is a bad thing. It's a big reason why FSU got smoked by an 11 seed missing their best player in the second round.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

How did FSU's depth get them smoked by Xavier? They just looked a step slow the whole game to me.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Yea I don't think that loss had anything to do with depth but rather everything to do with heart. FSU looked lathargic at times frequently throughout the course of the season, especially down the final stretch of ACC games leading to the tournament.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

FSU got smoked because they shot like 40% from inside and only 19% from outside while Xavier shot 55% from inside and 65% from outside. Xavier also had huge advantage in this game at the free throw line.

Was talking to my FSU buddy who was telling me they looked like that a ton this season away from home on regular rest. Said Hamilton playing 12 guys hurts their chemistry on the court, as Hamilton likes to mess with his lineup too often and just in general plays too many guys.

He also said that one Saturday road game (think it was Syracuse) they looked gas after having a typical 3 days rest. At that point he realized that they weren't tired but just out of sync because of all the funky lineups Hamilton was trying out, switching guys out every 3 minutes when it clearly wasn't working.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

word on the street is Indiana has an eye on Bennett. I know the transfers arent related to that but there are also rumors of kyle guy thinking about transferring as well. I certainly wouldnt mind although I'd be pretty surprised, I think the only place he'll even consider leaving for is wisconsin and gard won over some fans again by beating Villanova. Next year will be interesting in Madison

And?

I want to put forward proposal:

Anything related to LOLUVA which makes us celebrate/laugh would not actually be labelled "OT" as it will usually have, at least, an indirect impact on VT athletics. Combine that with the fact that it is part of our interest, as fans/alum of VT, to find excitement in their demise (as it relates to athletics).

I've heard Indiana might be courting Bennett...

I mean... we're nearing a reality of VT back to being a legitimate football power in this conference with UVa the very clear doormat and no hopes of that changing anytime soon to be combined with an upward trajectory Buzzketball program reaching its stride right at the same time that Bennett gets hired away from Virginia with an AD who has a history of making completely inept hires tasked to replace him.

Meh, i suppose you are entitled to your opinion. I, for one, enjoy having a place where we can all congregate and roast some figurative marshmallows on the dumpster fire that is revenue sports at LOLUVa. It's nice to be able to do that with basketball for once to help get through the football offseason.

Frankly, at the age of 32, it's hard to find friends who will go out and have a good time on an afternoon's notice. Usually, I have to put in an application for bro time 2 weeks in advance with a wife, find a babysitter and feed the dog for my friends' before they are let out of the house for a happy hour.

My friend is an idiot UVA fan, but he is a nice guy, single with no woman telling him what to do (not that there's anything wrong with that), brews damn good beer, was in the same fraternity (different school) and we get along well. He just made some poor fandom choices in life. From now on I'll probably choose to see less of him during college basketball season than any other time of the year for obvious reasons
