Everyone's favorite beat writer, Mark Berman, wrote a piece about the quick turnaround of the women's lacrosse team and new head coach, John Sung.
In Sung's first season at the helm, the 11-4 Hokies are ranked 15th in the nation and have tied the 1999 squad for the most overall victories in school history.
After failing to win a game in the rigorous ACC the past four years, Virginia Tech is 2-2 in conference play β the most ACC victories in its history.
This article talks about the mentality of the team was before Sung took over. It is damning how bad it got. Players wanted a coaching change, and were just extremely unhappy.
Sung stated that he believes they are 18 months to 2 years ahead of schedule. Whit Babcock has been on fire with all of his hires. It is remarkable how great he has been in every coaching search.

In Whit I Trust
In related news, in the commonwealth clash, we are currently leading 9-7, however, the remaining events are as follows:
Baseball (4/13)
Women's Golf (4/13-4/15)
Men's Golf (4/21-4/23)
Women's Lacrosse (4/22)
Men's Outdoor Track (5/12-5/14)
Women's Outdoor Track (5/12-5/14)
Over the last two years, we've won a whopping two points from this group of spring events (Baseball in 2015 and Men's Track in 2016). So, we need every win we can scrounge from these sports in the home stretch. Would absolutely love to see our ladies take down their LOLUVa lacrosse counterparts.
Well, for the time being our women's lacrosse and track teams are ranked higher than theirs, so it's not too farfetched. We'd need to beat them in both of those and steal another one to take the challenge, and even a tie would be a huge improvement over pretty much any year recently.
Shibby!
No clue how true it actually is, but I do recall meeting a girl a few years ago who got an offer to play on the women's lax team, but turned it down to play for the club team because the coaching staff had a bad reputation. Apparently there were a few other ones who did the same thing (They were all going to tech already so it's not like they came to VT specifically for lacrosse in the first place).
Glad to see Whit has been paying attention and booting other sports in addition to the big 2 profit producers!
On a side note, Women's Lacrosse is probably the most painful sport to watch. Ever. The game just stops... over and over with fouls. No body contact allowed at all.
clearly you have never watched field hockey
Field hockey? Lacrosse? Same thing! /s
Dear Lord, this.
I was looking for something else, but damn it, this was just so ludicrous, I couldn't pass it up.
I've heard Women's Lax described as freeze tag combined w/ chess. Pretty accurate
Womens lacrosse player here- I'd say freeze tag/jv girls basketball/soccer. Once the ball is settled at either end its very similar to basketball. Cuts, screens, slides - all exactly the same. Goal is to work the ball into the middle and draw the foul/easy shot. Free position shots for fouls committed "in the paint" = free throws. I'm getting a little of topic here but I originally came here to confirn that its pretty damn boring to watch.
It's moves like this that want to make me increase my Hokie Club donation, but then they go and screw up the points system and drop all the points for BatB tickets so I will just keep my minimum donation going until it looks like they can run a decent club
Good news! Sung's contract was just extended through the 2022 season!
