LT finally switching to TE

LT finally realizing his shot in the NFL is switching position, so it looks like that is what he attempting. Good for him for trying to make it work to chase his dreams. Plus that T-mobile to LT connection. Take notes Tebow...

I'll give em a pass since the article linked was published yesterday and has some new quotes from LT in it

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

A little early for whiskey, will have to go with breakfast beer

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I wouldn't say that - maple whiskey is fantastic on pancakes and waffles!

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I do love pancakes, waffles and whiskey, but this? No, I'll pass. Seems a waste of all concerned. Besides, everyone knows beer tastes better with breakfast than whiskey, right?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Bout time! Hind sight is 20/20 but he really screwed himself in the end.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Not really his fault, if we didn't strike out on guys like Tajh Boyd and Bryn Renner, odds are LT probably isn't asked to play QB in the first place.

Can't really blame him for wanting to try out QB in the NFL after playing it his whole college career. And while he had his struggles at QB, he saved us from some potential disastrous seasons.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Good point and you know I don't even remember who our other QBs were at the time. JuJu?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

How could you forget Leal looking so woefully unprepared in the Sun Bowl?

FUCK ZUMWALT

THAT HIT WAS LEGAL

Which part? The two steps Zumwalt took to put a hit on the passer after the ball has left LT3's hand or Zumwalt launching from both feet with the top of the helmet into LT3's facemask?

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

All of it. This is football that wasn't a dirty hit. He also led with his shoulder. As for "launching" have you ever tackled someone? Is he supposed to stand there with his feet planted on the ground and get run over? If so we'd call him Andrew motuapuaka.

Any reason why we had to go and trash a Hokie player in this comment, especially a current one that's probably working his ass off on the practice fields right now?

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Hope he is and shows out on the field, but it is what it is. Calling out zumwalt for being a physical presence in the most physical sport is a joke.

Let me guess, never played football?

he comes in with his head up and delivers a blow against an above average height qb standing up tall.

Review the rule, as written, in the 2012-2013 rulebook (Rule 9-1-4), which states that any contact initiated by a player against a defenseless player above the shoulders is, by definition, targeting. The rule, as written for that year, does not require the crown of the helmet to be leading in the contact in this instance (targeting with the crown to any body part is a separate instance of the rule being violated). A player having just thrown a pass is, again by rule, a defenseless player. So any contact made by Zumwalt with LT above the shoulder, initiated by any part of Zumwalt's body, is targeting according to the rulebook enacted that year.

http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/FR13.pdf

Example of targeting a defenseless player:

Receiver A83 has just leaped and received a forward pass. As A83 is about to regain his balance, B45 launches and drives into A83 above the shoulder area with his helmet or shoulder. RULING: Foul by B45 for targeting and initiating contact with a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. Ejection for a flagrant foul.

"Exit light..."

Not the "you musta never played football" defense that is so tritely trotted out to excuse illegal hits. I guess you believe that a person needs a certain level of CTE to properly ignore the more dangerous aspects of the game.

Does this look like a legal hit (ignoring the fact that it drew a flag for being a late hit)?
-Arms tucked in, clearly not making any attempt to wrap up whatsosever.
-Launching directly into the head/neck area of a opposing player.
-Head tucked down making contact with the crown of the helmet, not heads-up and seeing what he is hitting.

He easily could have put his shoulder into LT's gut and we wouldn't be having this discussion. Send a message with a late hit, don't intentionally try to injure another player. Or better yet, don't hit people late at all.

Admitting a hit is dirty doesn't somehow make a person less tough and defending dirty hits doesn't somehow prove the inverse.

Why would I have any bias towards a UCLA player? It's a legal hit to me. I don't believe he lead with the crown of his helmet if anything they made simultaneous contact. I do know what it's like hitting someone much taller than me (especially only being 5'10") and know not every situation is black and white.

As to the moderator trying to make a claim that LT was a defenseless player I also disagree. He was outside of the pocket and knew he was about to get hit. You brought the rules into this and does either of the scenarios described make out LT3 to be defenseless? No. The refs deal with these rules way more than us and was zumwalt ejected? Again No. Enjoy throwing downvotes all you want, but this is a violent sport.

You can make up all the arbitrary criteria you like, but again I refer you to the above-linked rulebook, which states (emphasis mine):

Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 14. A defenseless player is one who because his physical position and focus of concentration is especially vulnerable to injury. Examples of defenseless players are:
a. A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
b. A receiver whose focus is on catching a pass.
c. A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball.
d. A kick returner whose focus is on catching or recovering a kick in the air.
e. A player on the ground at the end of a play.
f. A player obviously out of the play.

what it's like hitting someone much taller

LT is not much taller than Zumwalt, he's 2 inches taller.

Or as most people know them: the fundamentals of piss poor tackling. Myles Jack tried this same technique earlier in that game and we all know the result. Most experts I have ever heard discuss tackling will say when trying to tackle a larger player you should wrap the knees not go in high. Scumwalt was 100% aiming to injure LT and should have been ejected.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I've tackled plenty of people. None of whom left the game with concussions, yet all of whom knew that they'd been stopped.

What are you going to tell me next? Is lawson gonna transfer?

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Given the number of QB transfers we have picked up over the last 4 years (Evans, Bush, Brewer), it seems crazy that Beamer didn't look for a QB transfer to help prop up the depth chart (and possibly find a starter) instead of using LT at QB......

That wasn't Beamer's style of recruiting. I can't remember a recruit that we got due to transfer (not including Brewer and that was due to what's his name, not Beamer).

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Take notes, Tebow

Tebow missed his chance when he spurned recruitment by USA Rugby. Guy was made to play rugby.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

No idea how he would have adapted to tackling (being the tackler that is) in rugby. Besides that, I completely agree.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Buffalo drafted Bucky?

We put the K in Kwality

So he could play QB, absolutely...***dodge, dip, dive, duck, and dodge***

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

He was drafted to the NFL due to his skill set as a qb. He has never played tight end. I don't get why he is so universally viewed as being screwed in any way. Any opinion that he was destined to be some kind of first round lock at tight end is nothing more than a guess.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

You're right, but I also see the other POV. I honestly think that as a receiver, LT is more talented than even Bucky. In what few plays he was used in that role, LT showed good hands and decent running ability.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

We don't know where Bucky is going to be drafted, but it appears to be round 3 or 4. Their measurable are eerily similar but Bucky is actually more athletic. Logan was drafted in round 4 as a qb. I'd rather be a project NFL qb than a project NFL tight end.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I was talking more about raw talent than draft status. I agree with you that we'll never know where Logan would have ended up as a career tight end, but I don't think it's crazy to say he could have been an elite draft at the position.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

He definitely could have. However, he could have just as easily been average in college and never earned a penny in the league. It will be interesting to see how he develops now. I will be pulling for him.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Turns out to be round 6. I still think LT made the right career path decisions.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Not sure how a video of him lined up as a WR disputes the claim that he never played tight end.

Scouts were drooling over the prospects of getting Logan onto a team as a TE. His measurables that draft year had him as an athletic freak who had the potential to reset the standard on what it meant to be a TE in the NFL. When he insisted on staying at QB at the NFL with no intentions of learning the TE position, it tanked his stock, with many saying he was making a mistake.

That's what I remember from that time. Sure, things may have gone differently, but if you believe what the scouts were saying, he'd likely be a NFL starter right now had he started with the TE spot from the beginning. He'll now be lucky to ever see any meaningful playing time in his NFL career.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

If you believe what the scouts were saying, every QB drafted in the top five should have led their team to a Super Bowl by now.

The benches on NFL sidelines and practice squads, or other leagues, are full of players with a similar report. My point is that it may absolutely be true but talent evaluation is difficult.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Seen a lot of posts hating on LT across many VT boards (both on his QB skills and transition to TE). This kid put his heart and soul into VT, and without him VT would not have continued the beloved "Bowl Streak".......For the haters, I hope he makes you all look foolish and becomes an All-Pro TE....he deserves it.

I hate this kind of post, I really do. Having a discussion on whether or not he made a career mistake in staying QB when the experts thought he should convert is not "hating". This kind of post reeks of "No True Hokie...."

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I don't remember LT getting a lot of hate specifically for the position he played. But I do most certainly remember Logan getting a ton of undeserved blame and/or hate for the team's performance in what became the end of the ten-win-a-season streak. I think the rational fans among us could see that his supporting cast tanked in 2011 after everyone graduated, but there were PLENTY of fans chanting "start Leal" as if Logan was somehow the problem.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I agree completely about the supporting cast, but Logan had his struggles at QB too. I remember him launching balls 10 feet over and beyond receivers, or driving the ball into the dirt at the receivers' feet. He had a cannon for an arm, but he really struggled with his footwork, technique, and accuracy. Him being a battering ram essentially kept our offense afloat and gave us somewhat of a rushing game. Starting the backup definitely wasn't the answer, and Logan was the most talented and best option we had, but he really would have benefited from better QB coaching during his career. Even then, it's just a shame we were forced to play him at QB because of abysmal recruiting. Would have been interesting to see what Fuente could have done with him, though.

Ugh I have vivid images of just some awful, awful interceptions against BC one year. That game I joined the 'bench Logan' crowd temporarily because he was obviously having issues. I didn't want it to be permanent, mind you, but there was no redeeming that game. I agree he was the best option at the time.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

He wasn't the only problem or even necessarily the biggest problem but his play was certainly a problem. George Whitfield broke him and Loeffler couldn't fix him.

First off I didn't say anything specific about this thread or anyone in it....Secondly if you are saying im not a true Hokie because I posted I don't like seeing him being 'bashed/hated', not debated you can kindly go #*$&! yourself you tool, and for the Mods who probably didn't like my last comment, I would suggest that anyone big boy enough to say someone is "No True Hokie" on a Hokie page they should be man enough to handle the comeback.....

Calm down. If you want to have a discussion, go right ahead. Don't get all aggressive and start a flame war because I will shut it down.

Noted, I have no interest in being a keyboard warrior, just didn't appreciate that remark.......

Irony: claiming a post about "Logan hate" reeks of "No true Hokie", while hating said poster's opinion.

i like you. you're a funny guy

My issue with LT was his attitude. He was always nonchalant no matter if we scored a TD or threw an interception. I understand it could be a good thing to have a guy who is even keel but for me I want a guy with some fire who will lead a team and LT never came across as that leader.

his attitude? really? he came to VT specifically because we told him we would play him not as a QB and then he switched to QB for the team immediately after stepping on campus. I have expressed my loathing of these rash position switches, but his attitude was legit. He could have said "no", probably should have, and stayed where he wanted to play.

He was a true "Team First" leader..

Well it should be easy for him. After all, he played tight end in high school I heard

I keep coming back to his TD reception against WF (I think) where he snagged a ball that had to file a flight plan with the FAA first.

I have this Replacements-esque vision of a QB throwing the ball away under pressure by tossing it through the uprights but LT3 snags it for a TD. "What? I wasn't supposed to catch it? Weird."
