Married is only for the first year. Enlisted guys, it's Upper Quad. Which is a dynamic that is hilarious. Move-in week in 2012, there was a guy who had like 12 years in the Army. Lasted 4 hours in the Corps because he didn't wanna take crap from some 20 year old who takes themselves too seriously but has done nothing comparatively.

Back in 2001 (ish) there was a former green beret who joined. Nobody gave him any crap and just treated him like an upper classman. Dude had HALO jump wings for goodness sake. He even went down to Panama City with us for Spring Break.

My Dad was a Navy pilot (32 years), started out in fixed wing, then switched to rotary wing early on. HS-1 in Key West, then Squadron Leader of HS-9 in Quonset in the early-mid 60's. Was also XO of the USS Essex, before moving on to the Pentagon, where he led the LAMPS Program.

My Dad was part of the Navy's official contingent at Igor Sikorsky's funeral. We later found out that he had continued to go on 'secret' test flights while at the Pentagon, long after he had officially hung up his wings. Back then you could do those types of things. He grew up in an era when those in the military never really talked much about what they did, except he used to say that Navy pilots were the best in the world (and of course, he was the Navy's best). We always asked him to write down his experiences in the military; unfortunately, he passed before he could get much done except for some hair-raising adventures in flight training in the mid-40's.

That's crazy! Some great stories for you to remember your dad by. At least you have some of them though. I'm sure he felt like he shouldn't pass some of the other info, says a lot about his character.

Sweet gig you got yourself! I almost forgot they were switching over to a carrier squadron instead of expeditionary. Hope you have a good tour there! I'm up at Pax River now btw, at least I get to fly all different types of USN and USMC helos while here.

Its been great so far. The transition seems to be a headache for the DHs and front office, but I'm glad it landed me in HSM. The Pax River gig sounds awesome for the lucky few who get to go up there. Pretty area and I'd imagine the flying is exciting.

It's honestly just ok up here, depends on preference i guess. It's a small town and you have to drive 1-1.5 hrs to get anywhere worthwhile. Don't get me wrong, lots of good places to visit that far but with 2 youngins it's not a drive you want to do every weekend. The base is very different since it's by far mostly civilian (government employees and contractors) and full of red tape.

I'm still amazed at how blessed we are to be in the situation that we're in. Babcock and Frank's handling of the transition to Fuente was first class, and Frank's retirement and continued involvement with the program has been everything we could ever ask for.

I don't think the Corps has an official age limit, and theoretically, yes as long as you're married, you can live out in town after rat year.
Maybe Beamer didn't want to go through the rat year. Might mess up his golf schedule.
