The camo unis Virginia Tech will wear against Marshall on Saturday for Military Appreciation Day. Yea or nay? #Hokies pic.twitter.com/SxX0b8PkNG— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) September 15, 2013
Eh. I hate the TECH on the front. Otherwise it's par for the course. Why can't we leave the uniform designing to Nike?

Yeah, this was the uniforms I was talking about. They were trying them on Thursday and I didn't think they were really all that great in person.
Damnit Weaver!
ehh i sorta like em
Aaaaand you're cut.
There's no 'U' in 'Team'.
Yikes..why can't we have maroon helmets still.
As a veteran and a Hokie, I would have preferred maroon pants and some color other than those ghastly orange shoelaces...how about...Maroon! Kinda like the camo shoulders and helmet, but too much white and not enough maroon elsewhere. #AllMaroonEverything
Aside: I like orange, just not ever as the dominant color scheme on the unis. Great for piping, striping, or accents though.
It's not only Military Appreciation but White-Out. Hence white being a predominant color in the uniform, and the face mask on the helmet being white.
Well, I really liked the ones last year.
Anybody a Bengals fan?
No?
So I'll go naaaaaay.
I just vomited a little.
On the other hand, the color scheme will make it clear who's the hunter, and who's the prey...
Edited to add caption.
Maroon Camo would have looked great. Orange... not so much...
Does someone have a Weaver brand identity meme they can post up?
(Can't remember who introduced this gif to TKP but it's a good one)
All for military appreciation day. Liked the unis last year. These are...different.
I had nightmares of this scene as a kid
I'm all for supporting troops and I know it's the "white out" game but these unis are awful! I would love to never see these ones again.
Of course you can't. They're camouflaged. Sigh.
Those unis are marginally better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Then again, I might go outside and look for a stick.
I love the fact that they just say TECH on the front. so sweet.
i can't believe anyone would like these.
Nay. Just wondering, who is in charge of our uniform design? They gotta go.
This is kinda like watching my dogs sometimes, it's not the puking dog that makes you sick it's the other dog that eats the puke that makes you sick. Not sure if that makes sense but this is how my stomach feels looking at that garbage with no #maroon to be found!
I have no idea how that applies.....but it does, and it cracks me up.
+1.
As a dog returns to his own vomit,
So a fool repeats his folly
-Proverbs 26:11
The fool of course being whoever designs our uniforms
i kinda like the tech on the front i feel like you could make some good looking uniforms with that. kinda reminds me of south carolinas where it says carolina on the front
im not a huge fan of these, but at the same time they do need to incorporate more orange in their jerseys. I don't really like being all marooned up
Ow...my heart...
...what did I just read??
MORE orange?
LESS maroon????
Gah! Closet UVA fan!
must.....not.....down vote.....opinions.......
aaaaahhh........
Somebody needs to go to the #Maroon woodshed and leave with some #Maroon welts on their person. Orange better than #Maroon...in what universe?
I don't want to see an increase in orange at all...but the fact that you are getting downvoted is ridiculous. Down votes are for offensive comments, not matters of opinion. Therefore, a turkey leg to you, sir.
I don't hate 'em. They're leaps and bounds better than the white effect uniforms last year.
We should have a uniform consultant. I would think recruits care about how a team looks in their uniforms. It may sound like a minor detail but I think a college team's "look" is its own brand!
I will apply for that: Resume below.
BeaverHokie: '13 Grad
GPA: #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
Experience: #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
Skills: #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
Swap the white for maroon and it would look cool.
Not sold on these uniforms in the slightest, however, all will be forgiven if #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING finally takes place for Maroon Effect during the UNC game.
i kinda like the big TECH on the chest though.
How much would it cost us to get out of our Nike contract? Ever since the noise State game they have been horrible. These and the gray Bama ones look like a little league team. Where's the edge?
Just kidding about the contract. No really. But seriously.
They're okay I guess.
Our uniforms are going backwards, aesthetically...I'm just...ugh, no words...
i may be in the minority but i love the TECH on the front
why cant we just say it's military appreciation day and like, i dont know, just wear our uniforms. its getting a little obnoxious, flipping through games on saturday you barely recognize who's playing who at first glance. everybody's got 10 different helmets and uni combos. its officially played out.
Except if you listened to Shane Beamer on the radio last night, you would know that the Equipment Manager's office is now a must stop on every recruit visit because he keeps a wall of the gear that the recruits love to go through.....Beamer also said that last years Military Appreciation uni's were the only thing that got him a ton of positive responses when he was talking to recruits last year. That said, whoever is responsible for these designs should be put on a horse with Cavman.....these are just plain awful.
I think its just a good photoshop.. If you look really close, you can see the nike swoosh is pixilated.. Nike doesnt make cheap pants like that anymore.
Also James gayle doesnt even look like that anymore.
Its just a really good photoshop
Given that hokiejoe11 saw them in person, I'd say it's legit, though Photoshop involvement is probably happening, just not to fake anything. I think the VT athletic department is using an old stock photo and just layering on new uniform designs rather than taking new pictures.
Lol, sarcasm my friend. Based of the grey uniform thread from alabama.
Yea, that's obvious now that I re-read it...the Internet really needs a sarcasm font. Or I need more sleep. Probably both.
Arj Barker discusses this in a stand-up special of his.
Text message: Great party Arj, best party ever!
Arj: What a dick.
Friend: How do you know he wasn't being sincere Arj?
Arj: Because he wrote it in SARCASTICA, if he was being sincere he would have used GOOD TIMES ROMAN!
Sarcastica....gotta download that font!
Yeah it's a 'shop. I can tell from the pixels.
Well played. Got a good Monday chuckle. Thanks for that!
Looks like a pile of Blacksburg leaves
theyre horrific. i dont mind the tech on the front if you get rid of the shoulder orange throw up camo. last years with the regular camo helmets and camo numbers were cool and simple. but these give me a headache
For me, those uniforms are the worst of all the unis we've worn since we started switching shit up. The helmets are ok. We'll see how it comes together on the field. I wasn't a fan of the greys vs bama seeing them online, but on the field they ended up looking good.
My feeling exactly hated the grey in pictures but on the field I really liked them. I'll hold judgment back
The big difference in the Unis for the Bama game was the Maroon pants instead of grey pants from the picture. Made it all much better for me.
I didn't even like the picture that was posted with maroon pants. I think these will look much better on the field
These are garbage, just plain, hot, sitting in the July sun garbage! It looks like an Atari's time of the month!
Remember when we used to wear maroon for home games?
Yeah, me neither.
... It was 2 weeks ago
Personally, they could be the ugliest uniforms ever, as long as the team dominates, I'm happy. Maybe the ugly factor will make the Marshall players nauseated and they won't play well.
Marshall Running Back: Oh, look at that random lovely pile of leaves on the field. I think I will go jump in that!
James "Doaks" Gayle: SURPRISE MOTHAFUCKA!
I don't think this can be up-voted enough.
Remove the shoulder camo and these are fine. Not the greatest, but fine.
Well, at least it doesn't have the foghorn leghorn helmet. Or the Hokie tracks helmet. I guess that's a positive?
I seriously think we have a LOLUVA grad trolling as an employee in our uniform department. I recommend an internal investigation/witchhunt/mccarthyism trial.
I believe these were actually the work of Shane's daughters, as a project for elementary school art class.
Were these XFL surplus?
Jumbo turkey leg for the XFL reference. All I need to see is one of the Fullers in a HE HATE ME jersey to have my year be complete.
For the record these didn't look good on Wyoming last year, either. Sure, there are subtle differences, but the
Pixelated Shoulder Vomit remains as gross as ever.
We've been so VASTLY off brand/consistency with the Bama and now Marshall uni's (and we're expecting some kind of War Memorial-based set as well). I simply don't get the equipment room/departments moves this year and last... Novelty for novelty's sake isn't a good thing when it comes to designing quality things. Uniforms are no exception. Now, a single uniform set for auctioning off for the wounded warrior project is obviously a good reason for a one-off, but having at least three one-offs in a single season is a bit much.
Do what you're going to do, bling what you are going to bling, but stay consistent!
I know people said War was going to be on the unis this year, but there was the War sticker on the helmets, at least for the Bama game. Was something said to imply it would be more than that?
It was on the helmets for the last game also.
There was a comment by associate AD that the pylons would be the main logo on the helmet for one game this year. No mention of when.
Always good to know we're copying off of Wyoming's 2012.
...There was a time when I thought we were leading edge.
Shane was on TTL last night and said that the recruits and players like wearing the different uniform combinations. He said that one stop he's always sure to make with a recruit when he's on campus is to the equipment room so they can see the uniforms. IIRC he said that a number of recruits liked the military appreciation unis we wore last year.
It baffles me that if those were player favorites, why they would go completely different this year.
I think they were auctioned off to support the Wounded Warrior Project
I guess they're trying to abide by Barney's #1 rule, "Newer is always better"
These are really not very appealing. The helmet is marginally acceptable. I could have probably not had a violent stomach reaction if the main portion of the jersey had been maroon instead of white. The "TECH" on the front doesn't bother me, it has somewhat of a precedent at VT. (see the Man below). I know it's a "white-out" game (why don't we do "white-out" for a Duke game at Wallace-Wade? I mean we'd be wearing white normally, and we always have more fans there than Duke...it would be more appropriate, I think), but the maroon would look better.
And here's the Man (thinly veiled reason to put a picture of Bruce up)

Ugh but then #alltheannouncers would be calling us vah tech #allthetime.
Let's face it. They already do.
Hokie colored cat vomit comes to my mind when I see that uni....I'm all for military appreciation but why not leverage the VT's cadet heritage and have a football uni that looks like the cadet uniform....white pants, navy blue tops with black trip...numbers in white....white helmet with black face mask and a brass colored VPI emblem on the side that the cadets wear on their "service covers".

This XML document doesn't appear to have any style associated with it.
Judging by your description, I'd say that XML document needs to check itself. I think a cadet-themed uniform would be money.
IF done correctly, it would be awesome (I've made a Cadet/HT-themed Teambuilder every year for my Xbox) but judging our recent design decisions, I'd prefer to let that sleeping dog lie.
The players seem to love them.
*edit I rescind my previous idea.

(or read this)
The thing that pisses me off about that picture is that he's wearing MARPAT with an Army hat.
The Marines also wouldn't share their pattern with the Army. UCP "gravelflage" won't be around too much longer
might be beating a dead horse at this point but EW WHY
Military appreciation should be recognition of veterans in the stands, maybe have a WWII, Korean, or Vietnam war veteran do the coin toss, and then have the University present a check to the local VA, VFW, or American Legion post. That shows more appreciation than abominations of uniforms in my opinion. Some of our players'/coaches' family members have to be veterans, why not recognize them on the field at the first quarter break?
I'd be on board with something tasteful like having the service seals patched on the shoulder instead of the Swoosh & ACC or maybe the American Flag on the sleeve like military uniforms do.
Does having an auction in which every single uniform will be sold for at least $250 or more and where all proceeds are donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes fund not count as appreciation? While the uniforms may not be fantastic, they don't wear the uniforms to show appreciation. They sell the uniforms and donate that money.
one could argue that if the uniforms actually looked good you could get more money for them...wouldn't that be even better-er?
I had forgotten that they auction the uniforms (since it's white out and military weekend, does that mean the proceeds are split between IFH & Herma's Readers?). I agree that better looking uni's would probably garner higher bids.
Yeah how about a medal of honor winner. we have those in bunches, right?
BTW where are our medal winners listed? who are they?
I believe they are listed on the pylon-pillars and can be found here:
http://www.armyrotc.vt.edu/aboutus/Medal_Honor.html
The pylons only have the names of every soldier lost during active duty. The Cenotaph at the center has the Medal of Honor recipients on it.
Inside the chapel they have the citations for each recipient and a flag from their unit.
A couple thoughts on the matter:
1) Uniforms look terrible. Maybe if the camo used maroon as the primary color they would look better. MAYBE.
2) The grey unis were also terrible.
3) What is with the gigantic inflatable shoulders?!?! (Both Bama and Marshall games have had them)
4) That being said, a positive to take away from this is at least these terrible jerseys are combined with White Effect so we get to kill two ugly birds with one ugly stone.
5) I love Tech across the front. I refer to the school with friends and family as Tech, just as both UNC and fake USC (also fake Carolina) refer to their school as Carolina. Plus it's much, much better than Va Tech.
God I would hate to be the Nike design team coming up with our unis. You think we hate seeing them for 3 hours once a year, they have to sit down at their computers and work on them for days and weeks on end.
One of my friends from A&M thought the unis were red. So that's not good.
And, if anyone's still awake and watching ESPNU, Wyoming is basically wearing the same uniform design versus Air Force. But their jersey is grey with a brown and yellow digital pattern.
I posted my thoughts in the game thread, not here, so I suppose they all got lost for the most part.
I was sitting in row FFF at the 40, and from that distance the orange and maroon blended together into a gross shade of crimson.
I saw your post. I, too, do not like crimson.
I hated them at first but seeing them in person instead of seeing them in an internet mock-up I actually thought they looked a lot better
I didn't like them at all online but then seeing them for real I actually really like them.
just like the bama uniforms they looked much better once they were on the field
yup, looked better on the field. my nephew, who's 20, texted me during the game that the unis were "sick as fuck." so i guess that lends a little credence to the whole young people (recruits) like all the crazy uniforms argument.
Yep honestly in my opinion it doesnt matter what we wear. If the recruits like it I'm good. We could wear pink and purple polka dots but if the recruits liked it then what ever. Alums may not love Oregon's unis but guess who does 17-18 yr old high schoolers love then
Ha ha.
My 14 yo old son said 'Dad, those uniforms are BEAST!' (As he sat wearing his calf-high black socks with shorts.)
And me, standing there shaking my head thinking 'I officially don't get it.'
I was at a buddy's 30th bday party watching the game in his basement and his 21 and 23 year old brother's in law come in and go "Those uniforms and awesome!"
I realized then that I'm old.
If it makes you feel better, I'm 23 and didn't think they were great. Not as bad as I originally thought, but not great
