Looks like another high-powered QB (against inferior competition) coming to town this week. I have confidence in the D, but this always makes me nervous. Either we make him look silly, or have the opportunity to get burned one too many times while adjusting and the offense is still finding itself. Am I still suffering from 2012?

Back spasms, they'll get after you. I am worried about the decision making on special teams.

Wow, Cato lead the nation in passing last year. Impressive.

im at a loss as to why frank can be so nonchalant about the kicking situation. especially after the debacle that has been the special teams that we've had so far this year, to say that hes not worried at all kinda pisses me off. fact is, journell cost us 7-10 points on saturday which costs us the game against a better team, and 2 of those misses were absolute ducks. news flash frank, the special teams is struggling, dont tell me your not worried about it at all

Frank is no Harbaugh. While it is frustrating to hear Frank shrug off mistakes and problems, he's done it many times in the past. He's not a head coach that typically airs his frustrations to media. He'll do his best to take care of it without drawing attention to a player. I kind of admire that, even if it makes him seem delusional at times.

I think Frank is just being supportive of his player to the public. I'm sure he's working with CJ in practice to correct issues, and is as constructively critical as any coach would be. Frank just isn't letting the public see the inner workings of the team. He's also got to work on building CJ's confidence and saying anything else publicly would not be supportive of that effort.

I like Frank's coach speak, to be honest. He's very good at deflecting things that cause media storms at other schools and turn into bigger distractions. He's very good at protecting his program.

It's not like Cody hasn't made them before. He won us several games last year in case you forgot. If he comes out Saturday and misses them again, I expect Beamer to make changes. Otherwise, Beamer having confidence in his players who have a bad game helps them to regain their confidence. Do you expect Beamer to rip his senior kicker apart because he had a bad game? What good would that do?

He could have sat him with the reason being "he had back spasms so was struggling..." That shows he recognized the situation and decided to reduce risks by showing confidence in his back up kicker. What he did shows he doesn't have confidence in the back up even if the starter is hurt.

So saying "sit down, you suck" is better than saying, "hey kid, pull it together. Shake off the mistakes and just go out there and play." Sorry, but I firmly disagree.

i think jmichons' point is that if cojo's back was bothering him so badly that he cant make a pat, then they should've put in the backup. that's not telling him he sucks and giving up, that's a starter missing a game due to injury.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

But his back wasn't bothering him. He said as much in interviews. He just got inside his own head it seems.

So what if LT shows up on Monday, "Coach, I got a sore shoulder," they rest him all week and Friday night/Saturday morning he says "feels fine" and gets the go-ahead from the trainers. Goes 1 for 15 in passing. Still says his shoulder is fine, when do you bench him for medical reasons?

I think Frank would look foolish if he publicly threw Journell under the bus. Cody is a senior, and he's been money for almost 3 years now from within 45 yds.

Everybody has a bad day.

If he really came in on Sunday and started dinging them through again...really...what's the big deal?

Leonard. Duh.

Seriously, his career long is only 42 yards. That is not very good. The Hokienation is going to be worrying for every big kick for the remainder of the season. Will it happen again? Kicking is 100% mental...

VHokie

He knows he can do it and we know he can do it. He won us at least 3 games last year all by his lonesome on huge kicks late in the game. Let's all just calm our collective tits and let him shake off a bad day. I have tons of confidence that this was a one-time deal, so let's just wait and see how he looks on Saturday.

*Also, this isn't meant to be anything against you, vhokie, more of just a collective "everyone chill"

DONE ......AND.........DONE!

That was not how I was expecting that comment to be received.

That picture is mildly disturbing....and hopefully not a personal picture!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

And...in my opinion, the best solution for the Cody Journell dilemma is to just score touchdowns on every drive. Then he just has to get the PAT down.

You're welcome, Coach Beamer.

Leonard. Duh.

Hire this man as a special teams consultant!

Problem is, right now I don't know if Journell could hit the PAT. Can they put an extra hash mark 10 yards to the right? I also don't know if he got any of those kicks 10 feet off the ground.

VHokie

If he can't hit the PAT then they just need to go for 2 and score 8 pt TDs the rest of the season.

Again...you're welcome, Coach.

Leonard. Duh.

I believe that the rules allow the offense to place the ball at any point between the hashes on the 3 yard line so technically, we COULD do that.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Here is the question....If Journell comes out for a 30 yard FG next Saturday against Marshall and pulls a low knuckleball 10 yards to the left, do you leave him in for another shot? If so, what if he does the same thing on the next kick? Where do you draw the line as far as yanking him from the game and putting Mitchell Ludwig in the game?

I think you need to practice another kicker this week as if they are the #1 also...you have to have Ludwig ready to go. Last week was not acceptable. If he was hurting then he shouldn't have been out there. No excuses...

It was letting down the team and almost cost us the game. I am disappointed in the coaches for not taking him out if they knew he had back spasms.....

VHokie

Sam Rogers could do it. But he doesn't kick the ball. He kicks the world and the uprights end up going around the ball.

Sam Rogers says "Boo!" and the ball jumps through the goal posts out of fear and reverence.

Unfortunately for us it's against the NCAA rules for Sam Rogers to kick for us because of "competitive balance". It appears the only way to have an unfair advantage is to 1) be in the SEC and pay players or 2) commit recruiting violations.

He's going to practice kicking field goals for a whole week. It's not like he has to worry about complex assignments in Bud's defensive schemes. I imagine both Journell and Beamer will know by the end of this week just how confident we should be feeling. If he starts to have some success, and starts kicking like he usually does by the end of this week, his confidence will be fine. If he doesn't, his confidence will lower, and Beamer probably won't trot him out there. I really don't see Journell going out there on Saturday if he kicks like this all week. I also don't see him kicking like he did last week this coming Saturday if he kicks better this week.

Unfortunately you can't compare kicking all week in practice to kicking in front of 60k screaming fans with the game on the line....no comparison. I hope he hits the first one and we can just move on and forget about this.
An extra point would be nice for him to break the ice...

VHokie

He's just got a bad case of the shanks.

(some adult language, for those of you at work/still in middle school)

Injuries can impact confidence. Even if you feel better you are not sure if the pain will suddenly return. Your body instintively reacts to painful situations or actions that caused pain in the past. Call it "pain memory". CJ must not have felt 100% in his mind even if his body didn't actually hurt. His mind was gun shy and overuled his leg. Pushing through the pain isn't always the right thing to do.

The point of having a back up ready to go is that your starter can be injured on any given play. Coaching is about putting your best players on the field. As evidenced by the results, it didn't happen with special teams against bama and didn't happen in the kicking game against ECU. The question I have is this a case of poor coaching judgment or just mistakes on the field?

Having had unfortunate personal experience with back problems, I can attest to the fact that ...(wait for it)

...back problems..they'll get after ya!
