No Special Uniforms This Season

Babcock told Bitter the Hokies are sticking to uniform combinations of their primary colors in 2017.

A year after breaking out black-and-gray Hokie Stone-themed uniforms for the Battle at Bristol, Virginia Tech will stick to its primary colors this year in various combinations, Babcock said.

"Coach Fuente and I are I believe very much on the same page of the traditional VT logo on the helmet," Babcock said. "I believe you'll see some variations of striping and other things, but no, we're still maroon and orange and white. And I don't know that there's any gray or black in there; I don't believe that there is any Hokie Stone. So they'll be sharp and clean."

"No Hokie Stone. No turkey feet. Not your guy, Foghorn Leghorn. Nothing like that," Babcock said with a laugh about past monstrosities. "I've seen them. They look sharp. And if we win in them, everybody likes them anyways."

The Battle at Bristol Hokie Stone uniforms were a hit with recruits like Devon Hunter and others, wonder if that hurts at all there.

I may be in the minority here but I thought the uniforms from the Boise St game were some of my favorite jerseys. I wish were were doing something similar when playing WVU (minus the losing at Fedex part)

TSL is saying that this will be the last year with the shoulder stripes.

That works for me. Looking forward to updated look.

I've been hoping for that for the last two seasons.

Well, actually longer than that, but the last two seasons really sounded like there were rumblings of new uniforms.

Finally!!! Now I can get a new jersey to replace the 04-09 style I have been rocking. Give me something unique to Tech and not just the Ole Miss, LSU, etc. version in O&M

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

The stripes with the new numbers looks dumb to me. Either be throwback or don't, but certainly don't combine a new font with an old design. I for one loved the throwbacks we wore from like '10-'15, but I'm probably in the minority here. Also loved when we wore primary orange jerseys, even though I'm pretty sure our record in them was less than stellar.

Actually didn't someone sit down and figure out our record wearing orange was pretty good?

That doesn't mean there won't be a special uniform. Its just that any uniform we wear will have our colors and logos and won't have the hokie stone pattern.

This whole post took me by surprise because my sauces indicated that there would a pretty cool alternate jersey this year.

we're still maroon and orange and white. And I don't know that there's any gray or black in there;

Tour guide knowledge incoming! Black and gray were the original colors of VPI for nearly a quarter century. In 1896, Maroon and Orange were officially adopted and worn against Roanoke College. The black and gray were slight throwbacks although, no one alive today say VT wear the black and gray. Hokie stone was first put on a building in 1899 and has become more of an iconic thing about campus as opposed to a color.

All in all, I welcome maroon and orange as our color over lords but want to see the Boise State uniforms come back as they were the dopest.

Super sad that it's gone but the owner Nick (Mike's son) really needed to step away. His health was seriously suffering and really couldn't hire a manager to cut into the already dwindling profits. It worked out pretty well for everyone.

Still disappointed he wasn't able to sell to someone who wanted to continue running the business, but I knew there had to be some major reason they closed down for good in August instead of the start of the summer.

He wouldn't have sold that to anyone. That was a family thing to him. His dad worked there, his wife, his sister, his niece, his brother in law. I can honestly say it would not have been the same if someone else took over. That place was one of a kind.

Really good big burgers, big plus. Closed in the summer, big minus for those of us who lived in the area. Yeah, I know, business reasons and all, but as a long time local resident, that was close to a deal breaker in the long run. Summer in Blacksburg was our time to enjoy town without the crowds and vibe that goes with the school year, and Mike's wasn't there for us. I got out of the habit.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

The sad thing was we were open in the Summer. Nick would take a month off to vacation with his kids and we were open. All. Summer. Long. But town residents kept telling everyone we weren't.

IIRC the last few years they were closed for a significant chunk of the summer. I distinctly remember going frequently one summer, and the next summer it was closed until early August.

I actually worked there those Summers. There was in the final year a long gap when Nick decided to close up. There was also a Summer where "Boss" (The original Mike) died which the family took some time off for.

Nerd, I know you worked there and have a special fondness for the place, and I respect that. All I know, and I lived outside of town, so I wasn't there every other day to see if they were open, is that there was a perception, deserved or not, that Mike's didn't particularly cater to folks around in the non-student months. While that may have sucked for Mike's, perception can be reality. I will also add that that is the only gripe I ever had about Mike's. I lived in the area most recently from spring of '87 to fall of '12, so this perception wasn't a one or two year thing.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I will echo this. It is also the only knock I ever had on Mike's. I grew up in the area and, save my time in the military, have lived in the area all my life. There were so many times that I tried to go to Mike's during breaks (keep in mind many locals only venture downtown during breaks) over the years, only to find out they were closed, that I eventually stopped trying.

If you play it, they will win.

Does that mean Whit / Fuente doesn't want special unis in the future either?

Probably not. They were definitely eager to unveil the Hokie Stone unis last year, just we don't have a really big game on the schedule for this year, so they likely made a conscious decision to hold off on them this year. A lot of fans have bemoaned the seemingly constant one-off uniforms recently so we're getting a break this year. I expect a special uniform on the lines of the Boise State or BatB in another year or two.

Especially for the playoffs.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Remember when playing the defending national champs at home was a big game on the schedule?

This is the most important statement of this article.

We won when wearing orange camo and I don't like those. And while I love the way we played in them, the white pro-combats still looked like pajamas to me.

Plus plenty of people like the black uniforms from Boise St. and the Hokie Stone uniforms even though they dredge up painful gameday memories.

He did say they look sharp.

It's just that they look sharper if VT wins wearing them.

I think my favorites are the grey ones were wore against Bama

The one thing I will give you is we went 2-0 in those helmets ... in a year that we went 6-6 in the regular season.

Now about all those effect games....

Bring back the uniforms we wore during the 2003 season (maroon on white for home games, all white for away games, all-maroon home alternates, white on maroon away alternates). I feel as if those were our identity.

I thought white on maroon was the standard away look, with all white being the alternate.

We wore the white on maroons against UVA and Pitt that year, which were our two biggest away games that season, so I assume those were our alternates. Plus, all white was our standard away uniforms from 1999-2002 before maroon pants were added to the fold I 2003. Then in 2004, white on maroon became the standard away uniforms with actual stripes on the jerseys and pants.

Ah, that would be a case of memories all jumbling together. 2002 was my freshman year, but it probably wasn't until 2004 or later that I started getting up to speed on football stuff, so I was thinking that the white on maroon was standard away gear the entire time I was there.

There were only five away games in 2003, and one of those wasn't televised. But at least that spared us the sight of these monstrosities.

Also saved us from the embarrassment of watching a game where it took friggin overtime to beat Temple on a missed XP

Fast forward a few years , toss in some TV growth, and we all got to sit through 2 overtimes to lose to Wake. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Honestly, this is what I want. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I like our current uniforms a lot! I'm a sucker for the old fashion collegiate look, and I always saw the one-off jerseys a gimmicky way to look like an arena football team.

Also, I don't know why everyone here hates the stripes.

I agree with your post in it's entirety.

Agreed.

The stripes have just gotten old at this point. When they were first introduced, I don't think anyone thought they would become our permanent look. With the current rebrand the athletics department is undergoing, including the updated and more futuristic font and number design, the big vintage shoulder stripes just don't mesh with what we're trying to do going forward. It's just an incongruous hodge podge of things on our uniforms right now.

I like the stripes, but agree, not with the new brand we're moving to.

I'd like to see a modern, but clean look with a single maroon lid (no switching lids week to week). for the threads, just mix and match between:

Tops: Maroon, White, Orange
Pants: Maroon, White, Orange, and Anthracite (Hokie stone grey)

There are enough creative combinations within there to keep our look fresh but traditional throughout the season.

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

There's at least 15 there, by my count.

I only get 12 but maybe I'm wrong

The stripes have just gotten old at this point. When they were first introduced, I don't think anyone thought they would become our permanent look. ... It's just an incongruous hodge podge of things on our uniforms right now.

Exactly. The current uniforms have evolved from what was supposed to be a one time thing. It all started as the original White Out uniform, with all of the different parts from different eras of the past. And then somewhere along the way, a maroon jersey got made, and then an orange one. It feels like someone in the uniform department just got lazy and/or forgot where the uniform came from. Things really started getting weird when they retired the T over V logo, and replaced that with the current VT on the collar, and then changed the number font last year.

Design wise, it's just a mess.

I think it looks clean and people just complain about it because they want something different, not because what we have is bad.

For all us old Get off my Lawn Folks good, bad for recruiticorning methinks because kids like all those fancy new colors...

There is a movement this year (and hopefully going forward) to get back to well designed simple and clean look. Even Oregon, which usually sets the trend for NCAA uniform designs has said they are going to have a more simplistic look. If you look at Utah's new unis and a few others that have off-season redesigns, there is a shift from the hydrodipped helmets, black and grey jerseys, and crazy chrome everything to more simple and clean stuff like what Whit is referring here.

You'll still see metallic decals and chrome/metallic facemasks here and there but I don't think things will be as crazy in uniform design as it has been the last few years. There will always be a few teams that opt for the BFBS (Black for black sake) unis or just ridiculous designs (insert Terps pic) but the landscape is moving toward more traditional, clean looks.

When the Oregon coach comes out and says that the focus was too much on uniforms and not football, much to Phil Knights chagrin, I'm sure...you know things got a 'lil crazy for a while.

When the Oregon coach comes out and says that the focus was too much on uniforms and not football

I'm sure that had nothing at all to do with the fact they had a down year and the coach was looking for a scapegoat so people don't think he's the issue.

Oregon hasn't worn the same uniform set in something like 8 years, so new unis is not unusual for them.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Still a ballsy move considering where the money comes from with that program.

I don't mind a reprieve from the alternate uniforms for a bit. It just makes them more special when the Hokies do roll them out.

If anyone has a pro-combat jersey (Boise game) theyre willing to sell, hit me up. Really wish I wouldve bought one when they came out.
