Countdown 100: Holgorsen Needs a History Lesson

🚨 There are 100 days until Virginia Tech football. 🚨

[Virginia Tech Athletics]

The Hokies open their 2017 football season against the Mountaineers in 100 days. The Black Diamond Trophy will be on the line. You know, the one that's called Blacksburg home for the last 4,619 days.

/Glances curiously at Dana Holgorsen.

"We have the Black Diamond Trophy and I expect to keep it," West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said.

🤔 🤔 🤔

"That is a good question. That was 12 years ago so who knows, I think the thing disappeared," said Holgorsen, who is entering his seventh season at West Virginia. "I am going to have to look that up and figure it out."

Right, yes, well you see it "disappeared" when No. 7 West Virginia lost to Virginia Tech 13-19 way back in 2004. That game featured sun showers and a Fuller doing BeamerBall things.

Then in 2005, WVU had a chance to reclaim the trophy before the series went on hiatus, but failed to do so by way of a 17-34 loss to Tech in Morgantown. In that game, as you may recall, Marcus Vick incorrectly cited Tech's rank as No. 1.

Vick also completed an efficient 15 of 17 passes for 177 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. He added 74 yards and a score on the ground.

Hopefully that clears up any confusion.

Comments

WVU fans, and Holgs have been acting like they are so superior in football when it's not even close.

I'm sure UVA would be proud to win 3 out of 11, but not many others would and still be so damn annoying.

That's the same attitude the Big10 has taken lately really without much to back it up, and it appears to be paying off with how highly the AP and especially the CFP overrate them. Fake it until you make others believe you, I suppose

They can definitely beat us in couch burning and throwing bottles of piss though

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

They did a great job of hiding the winch pulling this thing over on the far side. See him change his foot position in the first gif, he is basically on one wide-legged tip toe, thing would have come crashing down

Oh I know. It's wrestling but they made Strowman look fucking amazing. Too bad he shattered his elbow.

Stroman? I know the man was rehabing, but damnnnnnnnn.....

Looking at a big year from Greg - who's with me?

That 2005 WVU game was definitely my favorite Marcus Vick memory. I didn't mind it one bit that he kicked their collective asses and flipped them the bird to top it off - WVU fans deserve nothing less than that!

So does this mean that WVU has a replica rivalry trophy like LOLUVA?

This is when you just stand back and let @VT_Football do its thing.

Even the article seems unwilling to admit they still have red-ass from the last two spankings

Virginia Tech might disagree. When the Orange and Maroon Caravan was held in Tazewell in April, displayed on the head table for all to see was the Black Diamond Trophy, which the Hokies have apparently had since winning the last meeting between the schools 34-17 in 2005.

Apparently?

Do their records not reflect these VT wins?

I can see the West Virginians need to be reminded in September.

Just got my seat assignments for this game!

And there's this subtle statement on the state of educational quality in WV....

Fifty tooth?

Must be talking about the total number of teeth possessed by the state population.

That's how we know the tooth brush was invented in West B'God. Otherwise, of course, it would be known as the teeth brush.

Writer went to Alabama, BTW. That's my hometown newspaper and he is a solid writer and sports editor, although he has zero help. He doesn't really have a dog in the fight and sometimes writes articles about VT that have nice nuggets the round of beat writers we usually talk about miss.

Still can't make that mistake though.

Perhaps he's learned to write for his audience?

It's the only tooth in WV: the fifty-tooth.

They must mean "fifty-toothed". How appropriate. That must reflect the combined dental records of the WVU contingent.

Say what Holgs?

Let's Go

HOKIES

So no one calls out Holgo on this? He just claims they have the trophy, despite the fact we beat them in 2004 and 2005?
This guy is a major tool....I wonder if he is still looking for it? Maybe he thinks someone stuck it in a closet or burned it with a couch....

VHokie

My guess is that he barely glanced at the overall record and from there ASS U MEd that they held the trophy. I don't really perceive him to be much of a "football historian" digging into the record books or past game film for deep insights.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
JC Price

Somehow Holgs is caught somewhere between talking trash and being funny. He's not doing well at either. Either sack up and talk some real trash and say you're going to kick ass, or make some truly clever and witty responses. Or do neither since he clearly isn't prepared. His little "No damn chance" was obviously tongue in cheek and he laughed during as though he didn't mean it.

His team is about to get handled.

"There was an ex-player that was in the stands that asked me a question, 'What are Virginia Tech's chances of winning.' I was like 'not very good.' Especially in a whole room full of West Virginia fans, what I am supposed to say."

Don't backtrack Dana

Holgorsen is a head case who wears his emotions on his sleeves at all times. During that stretch when the Big 12 was pretty tough and WVU was going .500 pretty regularly, he was always running up and down the sideline yelling at anyone who looked him in the eyes. Last season when the Big 12 was the weakest it had been in a long time, he was everyone's best friend, and that has carried over to this offseason.

The truth is, WVU played three teams that finished the season ranked last season and lost every one of them by an average of three touchdowns. Their recruiting class was rated worse on 247 than UVA, and they lost almost their entire defense.

I don't think we're going to run away with this game. For what they lost on defense we basically lost on offense production-wise. With that being said, our players are more athletic than theirs, their starting quarterback will be going up against a defense returning multiple key parts in his first game in almost two years, and Fuente and Cornelson will find some way to confuse their defense enough to where we can hit big plays.
