Saw this on TSL's Tech Talk Live notes (link below). From Frank Beamer: "Antone Exum has already redshirted, so he cant get a medical redshirt. They havent talked about applying for a sixth year, but they will."

It's probably a long shot, but it'd be awesome (both for him and the program) if he could get that sixth year.

Interesting things from SOURCES
I actually like this a lot. He's missed a bunch of practice time and we'll need depth on the DL in the next couple years.
Well, I just hope whatever happens with Exum, it's all for the best.
Exum would be better off going to the NFL than spending a 6th year in college.
You sure? I feel like teams would shy away from a guy coming off a major knee injury, hadn't played football in a year and was only really playing good football for the last half of the 2012 season. I think he could help his draft stock considerably by having a healthy, productive Super-RS-Senior season.
There is an infinite number of case studies both for and against staying. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this appeal turns out to be true. I would figure the staff and Exum would make that decision together. I don't know if that means he still thinks he has something to prove or an extra year would improve his stock... If I was him I would call it a day and go pro.
at least corners have a longer career span than most other positions in the NFL
That's exactly what I was thinking. His draft stock last year wasn't high enough for him to leave early. After an ACL injury I'm sure it has fallen a good amount. He's better off coming back and showing everyone that he's fine.
Every year he stays in school his value goes down because he's a year older. He may have only been good for half a season but probably would have been a late first/early second rounder had he come out after the 2012 season. He's better off getting the money from the NFL now. Marcus Lattimore had that choice and took the money. Same with Darren Evans, Willis McGahee and scores of other players who suffered major knee injuries in college but still had value to the NFL. If he comes back to college next year and lights it up it will be devalued because he'll be competing against players younger and less physically developed. It really only makes sense to come back to college if he just can't play any longer.
if he was going to be a late first/early second rounder last year he would have been out in a heartbeat. The draft advisory board gave him back a projected draft round much later than that.
Zero chance he would have been drafted as high as the 2nd round.
For some reason I thought he said the advisory board said he would be a 2nd round pick, but according to Google he never said what he was told. I get confused in my old age.
Anyway, my point still stands- the longer he waits, the less value he has to the NFL, and the longer he has to wait to get paid (think time value of money). Let's say he would be a 4th round pick after this season. He'd make the NFL minimum, get a signing bonus and would start his 4 year free agency clock. How much higher would he get if came back a 6th year and was a year older before going into the NFL? The difference in the money between a 3rd and 4th round pick isn't that significant (around $100k in the yearly salary if my math is right) and you have to wait a year for that money. Plus instead of hitting free agency at 27 he's hitting it at 28. He'd have to be a 2nd round pick or higher to justify passing on the move and if he wasn't a 2nd rounder when he was younger and didn't have an injury history it's unlikely he will be a 2nd round pick in 2015.
It really only makes sense to come back if he has no NFL future.
But what if he wouldn't be a 4th round pick? I could see NFL Teams being wary of drafting a player who hasn't played a snap in over a year due to an injury. Sure the combine shows them a little bit of how recovered he is, but drills aren't the same as playing in a game and I have a feeling that he would be in late round/UDFA range at best without having come back and played well in several games.
Edit: Also, I don't think Darren Evans is the best example of someone leaving early and cashing in. Last time I checked he spent 2 years mostly on practice squads and only played in 3 games. Coming back wouldn't have guaranteed that he'd have been drafted, but I think it would have helped him to get more game film post injury so that NFL teams would have been more willing to use a late round pick on him.
There isn't a whole lot of difference in the money after the 2nd round- the 25% yearly raises go away after the 2nd round and 4th-7th rounders basically get the minimum. DJ Hayden suffered a near-fatal injury in November and ended up being the 12th overall pick. Marcus Lattimore suffered knee injuries in 2011 and 2012 and likely won't play in 2013 and went in the 4th round. If you're going to get paid the same no matter when you go, why not go earlier? He already cost himself money by coming back this year.
There isn't much difference between a UDFA and late round pick. For Evans he was better off starting his pro career and earning money immediately rather than waiting.
To be fair, (and I am really tickled with how much Exum improved last year), but Lattimore was the best player in college football over the last couple of seasons when healthy. Spectacular player.
Spectacular player who has now suffered a major knee injury and a catastrophic knee injury. Worth a flyer for the 49ers in the 4th round at that point.
depends what his NFL stock is coming off a year lost to a serious knee injury...
Why would it be awesome for Exum? Dudes already got one degree, working on another. He will be healthy by the combine. Unless his recovery is way behind where we have been told, it would not be advisable to come back.
If you are an NFL prospect, your job is to get there as soon and as healthy as possible.
I think it's that "as healthy as possible" bit that makes me really want him to stay. That's a long time away from the football field after a long recovery process. I don't like the thought of his first game back from that being as a rookie trying to make an NFL roster.
Exum could move back to safety next year if he stays. Now talk about a scary secondary if that happens. Facyson-Fuller-Exum-Jarrett. Bonner would get some snaps too.
Exum was more impressive as a corner then as a safety IMO. Not convinced he'd be moved back to safety regardless of what the decision is.
-Frank Beamer from Tech Talk LIve
Wait...what?
I think what he's saying was "Marshall....they'll get after ya"
With all the talk about future DB's, does anyone have any idea what's going to happen with Holland Fisher? He was supposed to be a baller...
At Fork Union right now, he will be a Hokie don't worry.
I see him being a natural successor to Kyshoen Jarrett
Similar things were said about Drew Harris.
Entirely different situations......
Woo buddy, wait a minute.cj reavis could be better than fisher...without the headcase.
I listened to the show. It was a question from a fan. Beamer kind of hemmed and hawed about it. I don't think he knew the sixth year rule off hand.
Exum cannot get a sixth year because he has not missed two years with injuries. He had a normal redshirt as a freshman. The NCAA is very rigid on this stance.
This is why you are the best.
Beamer associated with the words "hemmed" and "hawed" is so accurate all the time.
I feel like this point is brought up in every thread with the word "Exum" in it.
Thanks Andy.
Good to know, thanks AB. I had assumed that Beamer knew some sort of loophole to magically formulate a sixth year for Exum. Alas.
Sam Rogers said Exum is allowed to have a sixth year. Mark Emmert was too afraid to make any public statements afterwards.
I nearly spit out the waffles I was eating. Well done.
Wow, that's two weeks in a row that I've nearly killed someone with breakfast food via TKP post. I will make an effort to be more boring in the morning hours from now on ;)
Turkey leg for you Andy..we can't leave you hanging on 666.
What about Case Keenum?
http://www.uhcougars.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/keenum_case00.html
Doesn't say it in his bio, but his Freshman year was a medical redshirt because of a separated shoulder from his senior year of high school http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6022570
Yeah, they claimed an injury that first year. Not sure if it was legit or not. Also, he played some in that fifth year, so a lot of people were upset he got the sixth year and their players didn't.
If we were an SEC school, I'm sure that NCAA rule wouldn't be enforced.
If Les Miles was the coach the team could just vote on whether or not he gets a sixth year.
You get 7 years at Oklahoma St I hear...
I anticipate Exum in playing in at least 8-games this season; 6 regular + 2 post-season. I also expect him to warp from cav-WR-to-cav-WR confusing them greatly into a panic-stricken rout, this November at Scott Stadium.
