Virginia Tech quarterback commit Quincy Patterson is elite. The 6-4, 230 pound Solorio Academy (Chicago, IL) signal caller made the cut from 25 of the top 2018 QB prospects to the Elite 11. In the process, he received an invite to Nike's prestigious camp, The Opening. Patterson is the first inbound Hokie QB to earn the honor since Tyrod Taylor.

Patterson's Elite 11 performance netted some impressive reviews from analysts on-hand.
Quincy Patterson was a pleasant surprise. Big arm with control to push it everywhere he wants & got better as day went on getting more reps— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) June 3, 2017
Quincy Patterson continued to impress. The deep ball is easy, hits seam w power & accuracy. Eye discipline is there. Footwork is coming.— Michael Felder (@InTheBleachers) June 4, 2017
Quincy Patterson took care of business today. Impressive physically; ability to see/read/throw. Think he played his way into the 11. #Hokies— Stephen Nelson (@Stephen__Nelson) June 4, 2017
This was my first time seeing QB Quincy Patterson, the Virginia Tech commit from Chicago. And I came away impressed by a player with a strong arm, paired with a smooth release. He's a shotmaker and will get better as his footwork becomes more consistent. He could be dangerous in Justin Fuente's offense.

As a comparison here's a live look at UVA's off-season QB battle
I've heard that they have a new off-season conditioning program.
Bronco is going to make them earn their real horses after they finish doing all their #HardThingsTogether
To be fair, it appears to be an improvement from last year.
This explains hard thing together
They had an absolutely fabulous Spring Practice. The competition was downright delectable!
This may be the slowest moving gif of all time.
It resembles the LOLUVA basketball offense.
I am excited about our future at QB. Josh Jackson, Hooker, and Patterson if he stays with us (no reason to believe he won't, just saying) We have some talented, big bodied QBs that will be pushing one another. We are adding play makers on the outside with this class as well. Exciting things are happening.

DeJuan Ellis is small. He is also a more game ready QB than all three of them coming out of HS and will be a nightmare to defend in the slot, at QB, out of the wildcat, etc. Can't wait to see how Fu takes advantage of his skill sets.
I am way too excited. Quincy has been so quiet through all of this and just seems to be grinding. He reminds me, in so many ways, of Tyrod.
... aside from the whole "6'4", 230" part. Yes please.

Holy shit, way bigger, Emory Jones, tOSU commit, 5* QB, didn't make the cut. Multiple three stars had better showings at the Elite 11.
AnOSU Twitter WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS!!
Jacob Sirmon, 5*, Washington, also missed the top 12.
Yes, but OSU QBs haven't historically been known for their ability to throw the ball under Meyers offense
STOP! I'M HAVING FLASHBACKS TO THAT DAMN SPINMOVE!
Counter it with Sam's juke.
YUP
Interesting. The Nike opening website also lists Kam Chancellor among their alumni in addition to Tyrod. Didn't know he competed there as well.
Justin Fuente does know how to find great talent. Quincy could be the latest of VT's long list of high caliber QBs.
Is that list really that long? I mean really talent wise I can count maybe 4 guys since the 90's that were good talented players and 3 next level guys.
Mike Vick, Marcus Vick, Tyrod Taylor, Logan Thomas, Bryan Randall, Jim Drunkenmiller, Don Strock, Bruce Arians (more famous for coaching), Will Furrer, Grant Noel. Not a shabby list
Oh, oh...I know which one!!!
My immediate thought was Marcus. He's definitely an outlier. What a waste of talent. smh.
actually, he had this level of hype coming out of HS. He definitely fits in with MV7 and TT as far as how excited people were for him to land at Tech. It's only after he got to college did he show what a waste of space he was.
I remember seeing Marcus in the background of a press conference with MV7 before Marcus graduated HS. My alarm bells were going off watching him generally carrying on and then flash what looked like gang signs at the camera.
Were they really gang signs? I don't know. I just know that even back then, at his big brother's press conference, to Marcus it was all about him.
I hoped that he'd grow up, but obviously he never did.
I met him in passing when he was a senior in high school. a) He was 5-10 at most and b) he seemed like a total knucklehead.
Did beat WVU though. Alas, that was his high water mark at VT.
Don't forget 2003 Miami
I'll give you Tyrod and the two Vicks as far as having the same level of accolades at this stage (summer before senior year).
Are you literally just listing QBs that have played for us? LOL
...The good ones
You lost me forever at Grant Noel!
Drunkenmiller Vick7 Tyrod. That's all I can think of when I think without my orange and maroon glasses. Randall was good, littleVick was ok and Logan went through a roller coaster of coaching shit to be as good as he was.
This. Bryan Randall was great, but he wasn't an elite QB. I agree with Vick and Tyrod for sure.
Oh he's definitely second tier type QB.
Grant Noel?
Were you sneaking one in just to see who was reading the whole list, or are you just naming some QBs off the top of your head that you remember?
What the hell, man? How could you leave Leal off this list? /s
Grant Noel reading this like

Slappy? Is that you?
Grant Noel did go unbeaten against UVA, as shown in my sig
Well you clearly forgot Dwayne Lawson. How's he coming along by the way?
Rumor is he might transfer because Patterson looks to be stiff competition.
Can't blame him. We don't do hard things together here.
Not sure. I heard he was practicing handoffs with Drew Harris the other day though. Gonna be one hell of a duo in the backfield!!
Jerod Evans was a damn good QB. Too bad he didn't stay two years. But the future is bright in Hokieland!
"That room is so crowded with playmakers. What is Virginia Tech going to do with all this quarterback talent?"
- No one, ever
So friggin' excited, Fam.

Funniest GIF I've seen in a while. I must get my girls to sign up for TKP just so we can give this three legs instead of only my one.
that face she makes at the end will haunt my dreams...
Not as much as Angry Woman Soccer fan celebrating a goal. Someone has it i'm sure.
Guessing you mean this one?

Hold up! This is a woman?
I'm with you. I always pegged that dude as a dude.
Same here
I keep looking at the gif and either that's a dude or it's a girl who really got the short end of the genetics stick...and an adam's apple.
3 legs..thats what my wife calls me
"Quincy has been so quiet through all of this and just seems to be grinding. He reminds me, in so many ways, of Tyrod."
^ THIS. 1000x I don't want to speak prematurely, but to me with these initial recruiting classes, CJF and Co. are showing the ability to not only assess players with incredible athletic prowess, but also are signing those who show regard for how they handle themselves as young men, too. If QP can one day be mentioned as being like TT as a Hokie on and off the field, we will consider ourselves very lucky.

I love the last minute reveal of the little cup of coffee creamer in his hand. You just know that he probably grabbed that off of a craft services table at the last minute and then just riffed the whole promo off of that little cup of coffee creamer.
Top 10 promo cutter ever, right?
He's up there. Jake the Snake, CM Punk, Machoman, the Rock, Austin, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Paul Heyman (I know he doesn't wrestle but goddammit, few can touch him on the mic), Roddy Piper, Chris Jericho (especially with his recent work), I hate him but Hulk Hogan, and maybe you give a nod to Triple H. I think he's solid top 10.
I was always a big fan of Paul Bearer's cutter work.
Jimmy Hart used to annoy me to no end, but I think that means he was successfully playing his character.
Yepp! Two more great additions. I was just throwing together a list from the top of my head and trying to avoid some more of the recent guys. An argument could be made for John Cena being up there or Seth Rollins making the list for his heel work the last two-three years but I don't think they capture the magic like some of the old school guys.
I'll be honest, most of my pro wrestling references are from like '82-'95.
I'll drop a few that will fall outside the top 10, but are "deep-cut" classics: Arn Andersen, Terry Gordy, Jim Neidhart (or any of the Hart Foundation, ftm), "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, The Road Warriors... Also, as someone who was aged 7-19 between the aforementioned years, the whole 'pro-America/Cold War xenophobia' angle played well with me. The Iron Sheik scared the shit out of me. Same with the Koloffs.
Memory Lane is fun.
But actual Lane is more fun.
You actually had some of the golden days for wrestling. The Attitude Era was dope but I was still rather young when they were really cooking.
The current era of wrestling is rather formulaic and WWE is convinced that once something gets hot, they need to relentlessly push the shit out of it. They've also made some "corporate" decisions like handing Jinder Mahal the WWE Championship despite him being a jobber up until two or three months ago. This man was eliminated by Rob Gronkowski from a battle royal at Wrestlemania (you read that right, the fucking Gronk beat the current WWE Champion). They also put the belt on a guy who has had a very eyebrow raising physical transformation (read as steroid use). FFS, this is the same man only a few years apart.

Yeah, it's all gotten a little ridiculous. I miss the lo-fi days, before all the pyrotechnics and it becoming a monster truck show. The pure showmanship and theatricality of Piper, Flair, Macho Man, Dusty Rhodes, early Sting - the commitment to the characters should be the envy of any professional actor. The actual matches, for the most part, took a distant backseat to the promos and the posturing.
If you watch the entire interview, he pulls at least 5 out from his hand. Impressive sleight of hand skills!
Hate to go OT here, but ten minutes ago, loluva was down 11-1 in an elimination game in the NCAA baseball tourney. I felt so bad for them, I thought I'd share and see if anyone else would join me in tears and sniffles.
Box of tissues status: Unopened.
Bag of popcorn status: Perilously low.
I read box of tissues and thought "I mean, I know we like to see LOLUVa lose, but I hope no one is THAT excited"
Watching UVA fail makes me laugh until I cry
And fail, they did. We laugh, we cry, it becomes part of us.
Sneaky Night Court reference?
Especially after all the whining they did about not being chosen to host a regional. That 'ol karma will get after ya!
And UNC got eliminated by Davidson on their home field last night.
Today was a good day
They lost to Dallas Baptist University.....DBU!!
START JUMPIN' , It's Enter Sandman time.
And yes, he realized his typo. Poor guy just can't get anything right tonight.
Can anyone tell us when to expect new recruit rankings from the various services with the likely bump for QP2?
It will update as ESPN, Scout, and Rivals update. They do their own evaluation as well but it is a composite score.
Not sure about the other services, but 247 will do one after the opening finals. So in about a month.
Thanks for the definitive timeframe mi amigo. I am just too lazy to go digging thru the internet to figure out how often the various rating services update, so was hoping some of the recruiting experts on TKP would know off the top of their educated heads.
Rule of thumb is 247 updates after every major camp. Rivals updates after their camps. Scout I have no idea. ESPN doesn't.
So I don't know if anyone else has been following The Opening at all but after day 1 247 had this to say about our guy Quincy...
http://247sports.com/Article/The-Opening-Finals-Day-1-top-performers-533...
So you're telling me we're getting a QB with one of the highest ceilings in the country and are pairing him with a guy who is known as one of the best QB developers in the country?
Oh and just as a side note I was cruising the live day 1 thread and saw Simmons with this little quip...
Some of the replies on that thread are gold.
http://247sports.com/Board/30/Contents/Live-Updates-The-Opening-Day-1-53379188#M53381435
Seriously the VT fans are so salty on that thread. Then again I guess that's why I only post/comment on these boards...
I mean... its a little deserved to throw that guy shade. On one hand, he's saying the kid might be the best prospect at The Opening a month after securing a spot in the Elite 11. On the other hand, the guy is saying the kid is an average recruit because of his stats in high school. The two kind of contradict each other.
Oh I agree with them. I think it's just a waste to time to complain to the powers that be.
247 don't care. Still a 3* who needs to prove himself.
Who is getting paired up with? I didn't see it in article, but maybe I missed it. Or, are you talking about Fuente when/if he signs and gets on campus?
Cornelsen
Yea I was just referring to CornFu.
leg. CornFu sounds so much better than FuCorn
Getting all those reFutiCorns
Because we don't recruit on a top 10 level, to get there we have to have a top QB. Hmm I feel like Macho Man up there, this could be our guy. But what do we do? Redshirt next year or let him play? Im always in favor of a redshirt, but that is just my opinion.
we get him to sign his LOI and get him on campus... then figure out what to do with him.
Let him come in with a chip on his shoulder. QP2 ain't afraid of the work.
Depends, once he's on campus, if he lives up to this building hype, do we want him to play for 2 or 3 years for us?
The number of ACC commits in that list is a bit stressful. Glad one of them is ours!
To be the best you have to beat the best! I'm pretty sure the $EC has been using this as a recruiting pitch for years - Why would you want to play in conference X when you can play in the "best" conference against the "best" competition?
We want the ACC to be an appealing destination to high end recruits. We obviously won't get them all (or even most) - but if more blue chippers are choosing the ACC, we should (in theory) get our share of them . The best players want to play with and against other high level players. Can't be afraid of a little competition!
We just need to keep up with/stay ahead of the curve - and I have a good feeling about our coaching staff/administration doing just that! We all know Virginia Tech is a special place - and BudFu and company are doing a great job showing this to recruits.
So after day 2 of The Opening Simmons over at 247 ranked the QB's based on their performance today. He has our boy at #5 just behind Lawrence and has this to say about him...
http://247sports.com/Gallery/Ranking-the-QBs-from-Day-2-of-The-Opening-F...
(eggplant emoji)
And then says this about a guy 2 places above him. So if Williams plays well he gets a jump in the rankings from the number 23 spot but QP plays well but still needs to prove himself...makes no sense.
Average composite score of the other 4 QBs he is in an upper tier with: .9611.
While I don't really care what his score his, I do wonder what it would do for the rest of our class if we had a QB ranked in the mid 90s.
Nothing.
Good players want to be surrounded by other good players. If QP was rated the same as Trevor Lawrence it would definitely turn some heads for other recruits, especially WRs
He'd also have offers from the Bamas, Clemsons, USCs and Michigans of the world too. I doubt recruits are looking at the 247 composite score of a teams class and making decisions based on that. If players are playing with him on these camp circuits and such and want to team up, I'll buy that. But being a high three vs mid 4 star will somehow affect recruiting, I will not buy.
I agree that recruits probably aren't looking at other kids composite scores, but if it was known that we had a top 5 or 10 QB I wouldn't discount that possibly having an effect on another recruit or two that didn't have the chance to see him at an event like the elite 11 finals. Would we all of a sudden pull in a top 10 class, no. Could it be the factor that tips someone like Daniel George in our favor? Maybe.
There is a huge difference between a ratings bump and being the number 1 overall prospect for the last year.
I don't care so much about his ranking as his potential at VT!
Anyone know which 7 on 7 team Patterson is on?
He's on "Lunar Beast." The other QB on his team is 4* Utah commit Jack Tuttle.
247 has all of the full rosters posted here...
http://247sports.com/Event/The-Opening-Finals-2017-42
Edit: Also worth noting that Tuttle and Quincy were named co-captains of the team.
So they lost their first game 29-12. I have heard mixed interpretations about Quincy but I don't think he had a chance to do too much. Tuttle struggled though.
Without standout CB's a 7-7 win is tough.
I was there and watched him. His teams defense wasn't that great, and his receivers didn't get much separation so he had to hold onto the ball and then make some throws that were out of rhythm. I'd say he was a 6.5 out of a 10 point scale. Threw one beauty for a 40 yd td in stride. Looks the part and is definitely a solid 4*.
So you were at the opening? Any video to share with the group?
I was but didn't take any video. I have seen a few links already out there of some highlights on him. Did overhear him say he's 100% committed to VT, even though a few big boys are contacting him. Says he's working Pitts!
So is this event open to the public or do you have an in?
Open to the public....you are literally 5 yds from the field, and when the players come off you could talk to them if you wanted. Most folks outside of family let them be out of respect except for the reporters of course. They set up a pit in the middle of the two fields where the lineman battle and you look right down on them. Oregon in the Summer is only second to San Diego in my book, and it was a beautiful day to have some football action.
He had two good clips on Twitter from today.

Interview from Today. Good thing the engineering building was unlocked during his vist :)
I really like this kid.
I am impressed, such poise and grace under pressure.... looks like a seasoned pro in a sports interview- and QP didn't do bad either!
Seriously, every time I hear him speak I think the track has been sped up. An up tempo kid. I fully expect him to be staring at the opponents sidelines between plays in order to decide what to run.
