Yes, we're doing this again.
List for OSU: Xavier's Chris Mack, Arizona's Sean Miller, Texas Shaka Smart, Cincy Mick Cronin, VT's Buzz Williams, Butler's Chris Holtmann— Pete Thamel (@SIPeteThamel) June 5, 2017
I'm not particularly worried, just thought these discussions were done for the year.

Don't harsh my Buzz, man.
My question though are there any players of top quality transferring etc?
If OSU backs up the Brinks truck it is what it is but I'd be surprised if he left at this point
I don't see Buzz leaving for OSU. Obviously it's a higher profile job but it doesn't feel like the right fit to me. I'm not ruling it out completely (when someone is willing to leave Marquette for VT, you can never again rule anything out), but I'd be more worried about some of the potential domino openings than this one. For example, Texas or Arizona would be pretty attractive if OSU hired Shaka or Sean Miller.
I'll say this: the timing of this is really poor. OSU will get away with it and hire a good, experienced coach, but whoever they take a coach from will be in a bad spot to suddenly be coachless in mid to late June.
aOSU might be a higher paying job, but I don't think it is a higher profile job. The ACC is the best roundball conference in the Country. Here he is coaching against the best talent and coaches. I think he has found a place he likes and that loves him in return.
Ohio State isn't a higher profile job than VT? Put down the drink and take off the O&M glasses.
Hate to say this, but setting bias aside ...
VT basketball : OSU basketball as Kentucky football : Oregon football
Sure, Kentucky is in the better football conference, but ......
Is Xavier a better job than OSU? Gonzaga? If not, why not.
No. OSU has better facilities, more money, better conference affiliation, and has been a more successful program over a longer period.
That isn't to say an individual coach wouldn't rather coach at Xavier or Gonzaga (or VT) instead of OSU. Just like a player could sign with a team that isn't the "best program" on their offer list.
So would Minnesota fill those categories too? Are they a better program than Gonzaga or Xavier? Or schools like Wake Forest, Washington, Kansas State. Where do we draw the line on program? I've always found the "program" prestige in college basketball isn't always about facilities/conference affiliation. Just my thoughts on it. I would definitely value Xavier and Gonzaga ahead of WF, Washington and KSU. As a basketball program.
edit; not to sound like I'm being snarky or sarcastic. I generally am curious.
It's probably a combination of conference, school facilities, athletic department administration and fan base. Don't doubt the power of the conference. Maryland is paying for their departure from the ACC. Some of that is due to recruits in ACC land "getting up for games" vs. other recruits from ACC land. The other part of it is that Maryland joining the B1G did not open up B1G land to Maryland recruiting, it opened up the state of Maryland to Penn State even more. That being said, the ACC is the marquee basketball conference and that gives any ACC school a chance at excellent recruits. I am also not a fan of the dominate in a weak conference argument. For example, I think VT football would be fine in the SEC because of recruiting (kids from SEC land want to play other kids from SEC land and would rather start at VT than sit for a season or two at another school) and the higher level of competition. The idea that a school is static in a conference move is simply untrue. It's a dynamic situation but geographical and cultural fit is important (see my previous MD comment). I started an FB page called VT to the SEC. I was shocked at how many Alabama fans left flattering comments about VT joining the SEC. It think sometimes we get down on our school because of our high hopes after the 1999 season. That probably also contributes to the "how attractive is VT" question. The answer is VT is pretty damn attractive all things considered. Are you going to feel the VT love north of Richmond? No. But if you go south and west there is a tremendous amount of respect for VT overall. Just my $.02.
Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, Cincinnati, etc are in that area where you could argue they are better jobs than the low-end Power 5 conference jobs. They have had more success over the last 10-20 years than the low-end programs but are at a disadvantage in terms of money, and that gap will continue to grow which will make it increasingly difficult to continue to compete in the future. (This is one of the reasons that has widely been pointed at as a reason Buzz left Marquette for Tech.) But you could definitely make arguments either way for those top-end mid-majors vs low-end majors. Ohio State is a top-end major job though, so 90% of neutral observers would say its a better job than any mid-major job.
I still say for the time being, any Power-5 job can be argued is a better job than a Group of 5 job, if only because of the uncertainty of the future of the Group of 5. That is, there's still the very real possibility that the Power-5 splits away and creates its own division that operates independently of everyone else. If and when this happens, as a coach you want to already be a part of the community rather than trying to get in. That's the primary reason Buzz left Marquette to come here, and that really hasn't changed.
On top of that, there's still unrealized potential within the ACC as a whole. The TV contract with ESPN hasn't kicked in, yet, and once that does, it'll be a major financial boost to everyone in it which will help distance the entire conference from the pack. Yes, places like Gonzaga, Butler, Villanova, etc can compete now, but that uphill battle is still only getting steeper, and soon it'll be incredibly difficult to financially keep up with even the football-centric Power-5 schools.
Personally, I don't disagree with you that any P5 job is probably > than G5 job. But I at least think you can make a fair argument either way. I don't think there is any real way to argue a G5 job is better than a job like OSU.
Oh agreed there. Ohio State vs the best the G5 has to offer? Man, that's a tough task for the G5. Even Villanova and Gonzaga, with all the recent success they've had, would be tough to hold onto their coaches if the likes of Ohio State come calling.
Really, the second any of the major P5 schools starts showing legitimate momentum in basketball, they become a better position than the top end of the G5. The pockets are far too deep at the P5 level for it not to be that way.
Where the decision becomes interesting is when you talk about the bottom P5 vs the top G5. VT vs Marquette is a poster child of this dichotomy, and Buzz is making it look relatively easy right now for a great coach at the G5 level to come into a truly bad position in the P5 level and turn it around overnight.
Cronin or Mack would be my bet, but both are Cincy kids, born and bred and may just want to stay where they are. Butler's coach seems likely.
Mack is a Xavier alum, I think he's there for the long haul
The good news? He's not on Jeff Goodman's list. Goodman seems to be one of Buzz's national guys:
(For the record, I don't think this would be the job he jumps for. There's a higher ceiling in Columbus, but it's not high enough to ignore the potential huge openings over the next 2-3 years.)
Yeah the fact that OSU would be another project when he hasn't finished the one he's doing now makes me more confident he won't bolt for Columbus
That Blackshear tweet really scared me. I thought it was recent and he was calling it quits after the injury. Thank god it was from November.
Yup, there are a lot of people just waiting for the inevitable Duke and UNC openings that are coming soon. Syracuse probably doesn't move the needle that much. Maryland probably isn't far from dumping Turg (one down year and he's gone), definitely some top jobs in the mid-Atlantic coming up soon.
Then again, if you're already in a decent spot and trending up in the ACC, you might be positioning yourself to have your program try and take the next step and fill in whatever gap is left when Duke/UNC take their inevitable step backwards after K/Roy retire. If I were Buzz, having looked at what we've already accomplished in his first 3 years, knowing the arena is getting a major $40m-$50m renovation in the next few years, that might be the long game I'm playing.
There are a number of jobs I see Buzz leaving VT for, but OSU isn't one of them (at this time). The VT contract with buzz has a TON of concessions that I don't see OSU doing (unless they're compensating with a massive salary bump).
Can we not with the UNC/Duke openings? Both schools will hire from within their "family" no questions asked, Buzz won't be in the running.
Yeah, that Duke job will be Capel's for the taking, no doubt in my mind. Not sure who the tar holes would have in the wings, but I don't think Roy is as close to retirement as K
I don't know, Roy has had quite a few health problems as well the past few years. I'm thinking it'll be Hubert Davis, he joined the staff a few years ago. Good reputation, youngish, I think he'd be a good one to give a shot.
I'd say for Duke it's either Capel or they bring back Collins from Northwestern if Capel leaves for another job in the next year or two.
Also keep an eye on Wojo at Marquette for the Duke job if they pass on Capel. He was being groomed to take over since he joined the staff oh so long ago, and if Marquette starts playing at a high level again, he could end up in a better position to take over.
Yea he's definitely in the pool as well. Depends on how long K continues to coach, I think he'll need a few years to prove himself. But if he does he'll definitely be a hot name.
I don't think UNC is as tied to the "within the family" idea as Duke is. Also, if Shaka doesn't improve at Texas that job is going to be open again very soon.
The Macho Man has been getting good run on this site lately.
I think that it's important to the integrity of the site that this trend continue.

As the Resident Macho Man Gif Poster of TKP, I agree with you. To everyone else,
Hahaha I mean, it does say it, right there, in your little blurb...

I don't doubt he's on their list. He's a damn good coach.
Doesn't mean they have a snowballs chance of landing him.
Eh...Ohio St would normally be on my list of schools that would worry me but the timing of the firing dampens that. Could be wrong but I just don't see him making that kind of move under the circumstances. FWIW, schools that worry me all have coaches that could conceivably retire in the next 2 to 3 years; both the Michigan schools and Oklahoma
Buzz wanted to play in the best conference.
That's the ACC.
He's halfway through a rebuild at VT. Why would he leave now?
I'd argue he is way past halfway on the rebuild.
We were last place the year before Buzz took over...we just finished 7th out of 14 teams in the ACC....
The math checks out...halfway there ;)
7th out of 15 teams
I guess Boston College is still technically a team, huh...
I don't think that Buzz is leaving, but even if he did, it just shows the quality of what we have at Tech. And trust Whit to do the job right and get another home-run hire too.
Ok, so....Shaka?!?
He hasn't even built at Texas what he had at VCU, so why would OSU even be interested in Shaka?
With recruiting misses being one of the main reasons they cited for firing Matta, I think the Bamba commit makes Shaka pretty attractive to them
I'm not entirely sure OSU is a more attractive job than UTex. Actually, I'd be inclined to say they're on the same level.
That would be a pretty big demotion in my mind. No way Shaka would do that unless he's being forced out
I was just proposing a potential answer to the question why anOSU would be interested in Shaka, not implying anything the other way around
Matta, Bamba, Shaka.... That's a lot of A's
Why would Shaka even be interested in OSU. No one leaves Texas for OSU. No one. Texas is a top 5 job in any sport.
THE Ohio State University can kiss THE entirety of my ass.
That is a nice wish list, but ACC > Big10.
Are you kidding me? Buzz is leaving for Ohio State, no doubt about it.
You forgot the "/s", but we all know it's implied.
Pretty sure he's been leaving off the /s in his game day and recruiting "predictions" this past fall. For instance, his statement on Devon Hunter's recruitment:
I like his methods.
I'm amused by how so many folks thought Buzz leaving for TCU last year was plausible, but so few give Buzz to Ohio State much credence this year.
Closer to home. Had me worried last year. aOSU not so much. Texas or Oklahoma region teams will have me worried. Such as, if Shaka went to aOSU.
We've extended him, given his assistant pool a significant raise, increased his retention bonus for each season after 16-17, and increased his buyout for this season by $250k since TCU had an opening. That could have something to do with it.
And on top of that, its June. Buzz isn't the kind of guy who would abandon the program right now after bringing in the class he just did. Hell, we're not that far away from summer workouts.
At this point, I don't see Ohio St getting any big name coach, if only because of the timing. There's no time to bring in that first recruiting class. Their best bet to get someone is to look for a coach who is currently out of the coaching circuit or from the NBA.
Personally, I think Tom Crean would be a great hire for them
Agreed. Might be the best they can realistically get, but they would end up backing into a good hire.
I hear Seth Greenberg is available?
He's a fine analyst for ESPN.
Being from central Ohio this opening has me a little worried. I work around Columbus and all I'm seeing and hearing is that this is a definite possibility. Someone please reassure me that this rumor is nothing to be worried about.
All I've learned from this is that Trevor Thompson left early to go to the NBA? Wow.
Because Buzz is coming in and didn't want to transfer again.
He received second round grades from a few sources, so its possible but not probable that he will be drafted. Regardless, it means he is likely making money playing basketball next year rather than going through the upheaval that OSU is about to go through. NBA.com doesnt even list him as a prospect for the upcoming draft. When it was all said and done, 44 players decided to leave early for the draft so that combined with the senior class makes me think its highly unlikely Thompson gets drafted.
Isnt he already 23/24? Probably thought he wasn't going to make any huge improvements to his draft stock and wanted to get to making money.
I refuse to let my stress levels get this high during the middle of the summer. Fuck this.
I'm not going to lie... For all he preaches about family I'm more than a little bothered to hear he's seriously considering bailing on this team this late into the off-season. Wouldn't care if this was March or April, but a week into June? That would be brutal on the players and fans that have bought into his system, and would bone us on trying to find a replacement.
I hope this report is wrong. It just seems so backwards to what we've learned about him and the way he runs a program that I really can't believe it's true. But if it is... Man, that's tough for so many reasons.
Imagine how angry Whit would be. He's already in the middle of a coaching search right now.
I think it's going to be Hoiberg though. It makes too much sense for both parties. He's a been somewhat of a disaster in the NBA and will be back in college sooner rather than later.
One tweet on what one reporter "feels like" doesn't constitute a serious consideration.
Yeeeaaaah, that was supposed to say "allegedly seriously considering"...
I'm hearing from #sauces within Columbus and Blacksburg that the considerations are there. How valid those #sauces are, I have no idea, but there is just something at the core of this whole thing that just makes me uneasy. Once again, I can't blame him at all for going to Ohio State if he makes that move, its a completely valid step up and puts him in a great position to build a legitimate national power in a conference that seems to have its historical top programs sputtering, opening the door for a newcomer to take over. Its just the timing of this whole thing that would very be tough to swallow (giggidy).
While I love the resurgence of our basketball program. I think Buzz Williams is a snake oil salesman. I think he spews bullshit most of the time he speaks, and I would not be surprised if he left. OSU is exactly what he wants in a program. Big football $$ and in a great hoops conference as well. If he stays, meh, if he goes, meh.
I hope at least when he leaves he has proven to some other coach that you can be successful here.
Edit: This comment aged well
Is there any evidence that you can back any of this? Or just an opinion you kinda just grabbed and threw it against a wall and hoped it sticked?
Everything I have seen/heard from coach Buzz is the exact opposite of what you think. Every time he speaks, it really does seem like it coming from the heart and wants the best for all of his players on and off the court. Now money does speak as well but to say he "spews bullshit" seems kind of outlandish imo
He's already at a big football program school and probably in the best football conference. So I don't know why you would say OSU is the place he would want. I also think you are severely underestimating what Coach Buzz has done for this basketball program in so little time, so to say "meh" if he leaves is almost disrespectful to the man.
Who do you think you are, a realtor?

How well do you know arnie? He's in the penalty box still.

You're 100% right
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/19573898/creighto...
Well, this is why I hesitate in trusting a source from The Ringer...
Nonetheless, a source from The Ringer that just so happened to play at Ohio State. Not saying Buzz is leaving, but I'm also not quick to discount Titus.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/19573898/creighto...
Creighton's coach also considered. Seems to be a lot of candidates.
A-one, a-two, a-one, two, three...

I'm gonna need something confirming his acceptance by like yesterday
Well, if McDermott really got offered the job it means guys like Hoiberg and Buzz already said no.
So I'm done worrying. tOSU fans are none too happy right now.
Very good point
The hope that i find in this statement comes from something one of my OSU friends showed me. According to flight records Gene Smith's plane was at Roanoke Airport on Tuesday and we didn't hear anything like we did with McDermott. I am assuming that Smith was not in Roanoke to take in the sites. This means he must not have liked what he heard from Buzz.
As soon as they stat referencing FlightAware, dismiss the conversation. That path goes to the crazy bin quickly.
I don't know much about FlightAware... But for a short time today it was sweet to witness the bitterness of OSU fans who think this is their future coach. My coworkers are still holding hope that it isn't true.
I for one do not understand OSU fans having angst with McDermott. Creighton in oh so desirable Omaha, Nebraska has been to the NCAA tourney four of the past seven years. Since joining the Big East four years ago, McDermott has led them to 20+ wins in three of four seasons, two NCAA tournament appearances and one NIT appearance. His record as a coach the last seven years is 165-81. I for one am surprised he is looking to leave Creighton at this point but I guess if OSU backs up the money train than its hard to ignore.
Well I guess the money train was not enough.....
Man, that was the same relief you get when you see the pregnancy test with only one line.
I believe you to be a much bigger fan of VT BBall than l am, and I still consider myself a big fan. I could not even begin to compare the two.
I think I like Buzz more than VTBBall, but the better VTBBall gets, the more I follow. I'm just not a huge fan of basketball in general.
But the statement was very much tongue in cheek, meant to garner turkey legs for comedic impact.
Today on Hokiesports.com: Whit and Frank announce "Drive for 35".
Welp.
Shit! False negative?!
Sheesh. Not good, folks.
that shit creigh
dammit HH... take your freaking leg...
Why that order?
Buzz kill-aye..

More of her, less of Macho Man if you please, sir.
I got your back, NM
This is the proudest day of my life.

You da man, Nerd, you da man. I guess I forgot the /s, and you have done a fine job of schooling me on that point. I know you are THE Macho Man Man, and you are doing a damn fine job of representing his Machoness.
Look... I know this makes us a little uneasy, but lets look at this logically.
If you're Ohio State, and the PRIMARY reason your AD said behind having Matta go was because of his downturn in recruiting, and you've supposedly been linked to the likes of Fred Hoiberg and Buzz Williams, one of which is a current NBA head coach, with all the clout that comes with that, and the other just pulled in a Top 20 recruiting class for a team that won 2 games 3 years ago, why was the first known offer made to Greg McDermott, who has yet to have a recruiting class outrank Buzz?
This leads me to believe that, even if there was contact, Buzz already turned them down and they moved onto the next candidate.
Not to mention that Hoiberg's success at Iowa State was built off JuCo transfers and getting guys who flamed out at other schools. Those aren't bad things but it's a tough sell to say you pushed out a successful coach due to recruiting woes then turn around and hire Hoiberg.
JuCos have to be recruited too these days, especially the top guys. If anything recruiting a JuCo takes more because you have to vet the player that much more for why they didnt make D1 the first time around. That said, if I was OSU I would avoid Hoiberg more because he has had so many problems while in Chicago, especially in dealing with the media. Put him under the Buckeye scrutiny and I am not sure he can handle it.
It's easier for a lot of JuCos to get into ISU than it is other schools. There's less competition. He wasn't really fighting with powers for blue-chip high school kids.
Thought we had dodged it. Looks like I will continue to be anxious until a hire is announced.
A highly underrated gif
Per 11W, they're interviewing Mike Brown of the Warriors today.
Saw they're also after Butler's head coach
Mike Brown would be interesting especially with his history in the state as the Cavs coach. Seems like a good guy.
Anybody but Buzz!
What scares me just as much as Buzz leaving is he would take most of his vaunted recruiting class with him, or at least most would be off to another school.
I'd be a long fall back to the bottom of the ACC after tasting success the last few years.
Yeah, I mean, in terms of the timeline:
Multiple reports had Buzz and Hoiberg as the early faves, then the ESPN report that they offered McDermott came hours later.
Feel like it's pretty clear they would have (or did) kick the tires on Buzz, he passed, and they moved down the list. The only way this doesn't make sense is if you can somehow convince me that Buzz is lower on their list than McD. Anyone?
I can't help but think the Ohio State athletic director really botched the timing with this - you missed out on the coaching carousel (and some of the best candidates) by waiting this long and you're not engendering much goodwill for your program in the short-term.
You're likely to either end up with a lesser candidate & be called incompetent, or hire a bigger fish and get vilified for poaching someone without leaving that coach's former school as big of a candidate pool. Maybe I'm wrong about this theory, but I think there's probably a number of guys who might shy away from this job due to the optics of taking the position at this date.
Agreed. Putting off your coaching search until June in favor of waiting to see where a couple of long shot recruits land is pretty amateurish.
I was about to say it was pretty similar timing to Greenberg's firing but I went back to look it up and that went down on April 24th. This is a month and a half later, yea what a terrible idea. They are almost better off just promoting an assistant and waiting until next coaching carousel comes around... but that will kill their 2018 recruiting class. Is Thad Matta available to hire?
I have a hard time believing any blue blood administrator gives a shit about being vilified.
Per Jon Rothstein, 5 prominent coaches have already turned the job down.
Tough to see Buzz not being one of those 5.
What I've noticed, however, is that they seem to be asking EVERYONE.
Buzz doesn't strike me as a "next guy in line" kind of get.
Rothstein is a trusted source for Buzz. At this point, you can go ahead and bank on Buzz already having turned them down.
Just off the press from CBS News:
"Now the question becomes: Who can Ohio State get? Sources told CBS Sports on Thursday that Tom Crean, Mick Cronin and Ed Cooley -- names that had been publicly suggested as possible candidates -- had not been in contact with Ohio State. Additionally, source told CBS Sports that Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams was not seen as a likely candidate at this stage of the search. "
That is because Buzz already turned them down.
I honestly hope that Greenburg gets a call. He deserves another chance at coaching if he wants.
If Greenberg gets back into coaching at some point, I think it will be a mid/low level P5 job or a mid-major. I don't see a top 25 program being interested- he just doesn't have the track record to be that kind of hire, and he's been out of coaching for 5 years and counting now, which isn't going to help him. If he had interest in a less job, he would probably already be back in coaching. I actually think he's better on TV than on the court, and he seems to enjoy it. I also think he just signed an extension after the recent wave of ESPN layoffs.
That would be some kind of Lane Kiffin dork magic if Greenberg gets fired by VT and then hired by Ohio State 5 years later.
Look at this reverse. If a job like OSU opens, won't the agents of interested candidates make a quick call to OSU to express their potential interest? What role does this play in potential hires and names being mentioned?
A big thing that makes me think Buzz has turned down the OSU job is something someone posted on Reddit a bit ago. They posted the FlightAware page for the OSU executive jet and it showed it made a trip to Roanoke on Tuesday. This was before the Creighton coach was rumored to have been offered the job. I think OSU did have interest in Buzz and he thought better than jumping into that mess. The jet has a flight plan for Indianapolis at 10:10am tomorrow morning.
FlightAware
ROA is for Tech, OMA is for Creighton, and IND is for Butler. What was TEB for on Monday? That's by NYC. St. John's (Chris Mullin)?
My guess would be Kevin Willard at Seton Hall.
ah, yeah that's a good guess.
It just creeps me out that we can track a dude's private jet. I'm happy to have the reassurance this provided, but man, that is some stalker shit
Such is life when you have a private jet
You'd think a private jet would be more... you know... private
Ron White was charged with possession of marijuana after police received an anonymous tip from two disgruntled former pilots who tracked his private jet

I seriously debated hitting 'Post' for this very reason. Take your gotdamn leg

And no, this is not an invitation to start a political discussion, just a humorous statement of many libertarian stances all in one quote.
Let's just not even open the can of worms, shall we?
my bad for bringing up political preferences in the first place
Well if you don't want to be tracked then you take NetJets or something similar. I'm pretty sure that's what Whit did when Foster went to meet Fuente in secret.
Mike Barber also reporting that OSU's AD was indeed in Roanoke on Tuesday (confirming FlightAware speculation) but Buzz is staying put.
When the Columbus Dispatch posts an article about it, it's pretty much a done deal, right?
Makes me feel better to know its likely Buzz turned them down immediately. I mean, I don't blame him for kicking the tires on it, and having Ohio St people come visit to give them their pitch, but it does seem like he turned them down while they were here, which is why they quickly moved on to Hoiberg and McDermott. Its a bit of a different situation than I thought with my earlier post, in that it doesn't appear that he thought about it for too long. Maybe he was serious, but not that serious in his interests.
I think it's just in Buzz's nature to always keep options open and listen to basically any offer that comes his way. Doesn't mean he'll take any of them. It's often said in recruiting circles that you take every interview you possibly can, even if it's for no other reason than to practice interviewing so when the job you want comes along, you're ready. With the way Buzz treats contracts etc, it would surprise me if he doesn't subscribe to that same line of thinking.
So is it time for a Buzz Williams on "The List" for the Butler job thread? /S.
Nah, we just proven that VT > aOSU for a basketball coaching job. Butler would be << VT.
In all seriousness, you have to feel bad for Butler. They are completely and utterly boned here. A non-Power conference team with a job opening in June? Yikes. That's a job where you might have to call up a Tom Crean or Seth Greenberg just to get someone who can coach for you next year, unless you're going to promote from within.
Shrewsberry is still on Stevens' staff in Boston. He's the name I've seen that makes the most sense to me after looking back and seeing that the last time Butler didn't hire an assistant currently on the staff or a former player was 1977. (Edit:Since Shrewsberry is with Boston right now, he doesn't actually fit either of these criteria...is it 5 oclock yet?)
Barry Collier (player)
Thad Matta (player and asst)
Todd Lickliter (player and asst)
Brandon Miller (player)

I hear Matta is available.
hah... can't read
I heard that he can't recruit or win enough games.
