Trent Dilfer had some lofty praise for Virginia Tech quarterback commit Quincy Patterson's Elite 11 performance.
Has there been a quarterback in this year's competition that each day has wowed you with his talents on and off the field?
"Quincy Patterson is probably the most fascinating quarterback in the group. He is as good as a human as you can find and he is brilliant. Just off the charts brilliant. His processing and his wisdom. He is a wise young man, and he is only 16-years-old. He is used to being in the shotgun. On Sunday, we had him under center, he has done well in all the drills. He has turned his back on the defense coming from under center, got deep into progressions, threw the ball on time, and has located well. He dealt from under center. That was impressive."
Patterson committed to the Hokies in March and he recently reaffirmed his pledge to the Hokies.

God, QP2 is being built up to be the second coming of Tyrod.
Honestly, if he lives up to the hype, he could be better. One of Tyrod's biggest issues was his size, and if QP2 has all those intangibles and skill that Tyrod did with the physical frame you ideally want out of a QB, the roof is the ceiling on this kid's potential. He was criminally underrated at 3* earlier this year. That will change soon, and if he keeps progressing, who knows how high that will go. If you have guys whose job it is to study football film all day at the NFL level singling you out for your impressive abilities at a camp for elite prospects, you're doing something right.
I know one thing, assuming he sticks with this commitment, our offensive coaching staff is going to be in a very, very envious spot looking at our 3-deep at QB. And now seeing that we're beginning to get some guys for OL to protect them, we're setting ourselves up to have the kind of high powered offense we had wet dreams about back in the mid-2000s.
I just worry with expectations like this. I know pressure makes diamonds but too much crushes them.
I love everything I'm hearing about QP, and it sounds like he has a great head on his shoulders. I think he will be just fine. It may sound a bit harsh, but if a guy can't handle expectations that come with this kind of success, then do we really want him as the face of our program anyway? A P5 QB is going to face a lot more pressure than he's facing right now, just saying.

Fair enough. To expect him to have the same college success in his career at VT, I would agree, is a little unfair. I would say it is fair though, at this point in their recruitment to compare the two. They were both Elite 11 finalist QB's with a lot of hype going into their senior years, so I think it is a good comparison to make in regards to their recruitment.
I love Tyrod as much as the next Hokie, but he wasn't some other worldly talent. So I think bigger Tyrod is an apt comparison.
Comparing QP to Vick would be asking for disappointment.
Tyrod was a 5* .9910 on 247 as a recruit. Patterson is currently (and yes, I know it will rise) a 3* .8708. There is a lot of difference in those rankings. That's heaping a lot onto QP2.
I don't think we will see a QB ever again that should be compared to MV7. He was a generational talent.

Big difference here is Tyrod's redshirt was burned against LSU in a knee jerk reaction by Coach and he really wasn't ready to be starting (or even playing a lot) in college ball yet (maybe CFB was thinking back to regrets over not letting MV7 play as a frosh). His light really turned on and his legacy began to gain traction in his late sophomore/early junior year. He would have immensely profited from a year to prepare and started to see action in his redshirt Freshman year. You can always say coulda woulda shoulda but we had a good 4 years with Tyrod that might have been something special if we had him for his 5th year senior season. I hope and expect that QPII gets that year to adjust based on the lineup we have in front of him.
As mad as I was that we burned his redshirt against LSU, the rest of that 2007 season turned out pretty well. The mix of Glennon and Taylor at QB and an elite defense led us to a 11-2 record, an ACC Title, and a #3 ranking at the end of the season. Of course we barfed it against Kansas, with the winning margin being a pick-6 thrown by our true freshman QB.
Then again, same thing in 2008, 9-4, ACC Title, #19 end of season ranking with Glennon and Taylor splitting reps.
It's fun to wonder what the 2011 season might have been like if Taylor had redshirted one of those years, but at the same time it's not fun to wonder what the 2007 or 2008 seasons would have been like without him...
That part always frustrates me because it dramatically undersells just how good we were with Logan Thomas that season. We lost to two teams that year, twice to Clemson when they finally took the step forward that had been long expected of them, and the Sugar Bowl. Maybe Tyrod makes the score a little closer, but we likely still lose the game in Lane, and we're likely still getting smoked in the ACC title game. Clemson's overall talent was just that much better that year. And the way that Sugar Bowl went down and how Michigan had a horseshoe lodged so far up their asses that Brady Hoke is still tasting metal to this day, I'm not really sold we would have won that game, either. And really, its not like we were that great of a bowl team in Tyrod's time (while the Tennessee win stands out, Kiffin was a shit coach, but there was also the Kansas loss, the gutted out win against an inferior Cinci, and the humiliation against Stanford), so having Tyrod there would certainly not have guaranteed anything.
Not that Tyrod wasn't hands down the best QB we've had since Vick, and arguably 2nd best in our history (him vs Druck is certainly open for debate) but in that 2011 season, Logan Thomas looked like a world-beater. There was a reason he was getting 1st round and possibly Top 10 hype going into 2012. Many were saying he was arguably the best QB prospect in college going into that season. And then the wheels fell off.
Yeah, 2011 was certainly a great season in it's own right. I think plenty of people look at Taylor being the difference maker on our offense that year - a guy who improvise and make things happen against great defenses like Clemson's. Logandozer won a few games for us with his unique talents, but Tyrod was an electric talent.
so looking at the potential gain in 2011 vs the potential loss in 2007/8 we could be looking at one less ACC title overall.
This. We were sick in 2011. He really suffered from losing a running game to take pressure off him. With David Wilson gone, he had the bullseye every play

Should have never been pulled from the Kansas game. He played all of 1 series.
We should have never stopped running the ball against Kansas. Ore was getting something ridiculous like 7 or 8 ypc, easy late in the 1st half for a very easy score.
Then we went pass happy and essentially abandoned the run the remainder of the way.
To this day, I still say that was one of the single biggest in-game fuckups we've ever seen at Tech. If we had just fed Ore the ball throughout that second half, we pull away in the 3rd quarter.

The way I see it, if we are going to have a team that takes us to where we want to be, we need kids who can handle enormous amounts of pressure. We're a team that is expected to contend and win division titles and our administration expects us to contend for and win ACC titles, with the outside shot of eventually winning the national title.
The thing is, if we didn't put this kind of pressure on the team to succeed, there would be no accountability, and you'd end up with a program like Virginia. Nobody wants to be Virginia.

My mother was a huge Sonny Jurgensen fan. I remember when I was little, we ran into him outside the local drugstore (for some reason he was passing through our small town). This would have been early '70s or so. He stopped to pet our dog and spoke to my mother. It was one of the highlights of her life.
I can't tell if the co-anchor/host is a consummate professional, or stopped listening a long time ago, but did not phase him a bit.

I watched a few minutes of the Elite 11 on ESPN a few years back. Frankly, all I can remember is watching Trent Dilfer start crying during his own speech to the kids at the competition.
Pattersons ranking will continue to go up next year not only because of this event but because you can just see how intelligent this kid is and his understanding of what needs to be worked on skill set wise. Physically the kid is stout too and will only start to fill out more. I'm excited to see what Hooker and Patterson bring in the future for years to come

This question is for anyone that understands recruiting....Why would Quincy stay committed to VT if Hooker wins the QB battle? To me it only makes sense if the two QBs as are at least two years apart. I understand the spirit of competition but riding the bench for should be hard to stomach for a 4* QB. And I won't even talk about the redshirt freshman that was supposed to be our starter.....
Because after Hooker wins his second straight Natty in 2019, he'll probably leave as the #1 overall pick and QP will still have 3 years of eligibility left
This is a great point and one worth discussing. It's exactly the reason why Lawson decommitted from Miami after Kaaya lit it up as a freshman. He knew Kaaya wold be the starter until he left for the NFL and, understandably so, decided he didn't want to wait 3-4 years to play. Hindsight 20/20, maybe the 3-4 years of practice would've been good for him, but you see my point.

It's been running through my head for a while and I can see a few options:
1) There just isn't a clear #1 and QP2 wants to compete for it. In this scenario, no one really "claims" the starting QB roll which means we have a rough 2017.
2) AJ Bush wins the job. He'd be out soon enough and it would be a year for QP2 to red shirt and develop.
3) QP2 is much, much better than we all thought and will start from day 1/QB rotation with Hooker until a clear #1 is decided.
4) Hooker transfers. I don't see this happening but we have a lot of talent at the QB spot right now.
5) QP2 decides that he needs an earlier shot at playing and takes his talents elsewhere. He definitely could but he seems like he really wants to play at VT.
Because that's P5 football. What major schools DON'T have several good quarterbacks? If you are looking for a top 25 team that doesn't already have 1-2 good QBs on the roster along with 1-2 incoming freshmen each year, you are going to be looking for awhile. It's unusual to have a 4 year starter in the college level with no incoming talent to challenge. If you're good enough to start 4 years at an elite school you're good enough to go pro after 3. Injuries happen, people go pro early, guys don't pan out to be as good as advertised (ahem...Lawson). If you're a QB who wants to go to a top notch school you better be prepared for competition
Also see Mitch Trubiusky. Its possible to be a first rounder with only 1 year of starting at the college level.

By the time Q hits campus he will be borderline 5*. He will be coming off the elite11 and probably a deep run in the state playoffs. He will not want to sit for 2+ years waiting his turn.....at least I doubt he would....
Competition will bring out the best in him and Hooker. I hope they compete. I actually hope JJ wins, so we can have a legit QB competition when its either Hooker or QPs time. We would get the best out of them both and the better player will win.
If he is that good there is no way Fuente won't play him.
