Virginia Tech is burning up the trail in the Tar Heel State. With his verbal commitment, Nadir Thompson joins North Carolina products: 3-star DL Joe Kane, 4-star WR Tre Turner, and 3-star DB D.J. Crossen in the Hokies' 2018 recruiting class.
Thompson originally committed to N.C. State in May 2016, but opened up his recruitment in April after "communication problems".
The 247Sports Composite rates the 5'11", 165 pound Thompson as a 3-star athlete, but ESPN's conclusion is a 4-star evaluation. Virginia Tech pursued the two-way (WR/CB) Southern Nash HS product as a cornerback.
"He can do a little bit of everything," Southern Nash head coach Brian Foster told The Key Play in April. "We do a combination of stuff on defense. But he goes to the open-man side of the field and we don't have to worry about anything over there, which is nice."
The Hokies edged out Duke, Virginia, N.C. State, and Wake Forest for Thompson's services.

Quick thoughts: Really fast, looks much bigger than his posted weight. He can turn on an edge and get up field without losing much speed. He looks more like a Fuente slot-back (similar to the way Fuente used Sam Craft in his last season at Memphis) than a corner, but he is athletic enough to be a defensive back with good upside. Again, you can see how much Fuente prioritizes athleticism, speed, and versatility in his recruiting. While a Pimpleton looks deadling on punt returns, Thompson sure looks like he could be a dynamic kickoff return guy.
Kid looks like he can really fly. One thing I did notice, he has a terrible habit of lowering his head when making a tackle. Very rarely in those highlights does he make a hit with his head up.
Man, this past couple weeks certainly has been the zenith of the recruiting season...
