Good. I have a lot of WVU fan friends back home and I don't want to be hearing about how they weren't at full strength when we beat them.

There will be much shaming of WVU in the coming weeks and months leading up to this game. AS THERE SHOULD BE!!!

But man...there will be a lot of high proof alcohol consumed pregame on September 3 and at least we all have that in common.

Not a single couch is safe in the whole state

That's about as relevant as today being National Flag Day in Argentina...or International Surfing Day (worldwide)

Yeah, I don't get this. He got busted for PEDs in October 2015 and the NCAA suspended him for one calendar year. He got to serve out his suspension while he was already sitting out under the transfer rule?

I thought it was UF that suspended him, not the NCAA, which is why the sentences could be served concurrently.

That would make sense. The NCAA likes to just agree with whatever the schools do so that they don't have to get their hands dirty.

It was an NCAA-administered test, so it was an NCAA suspension.

I guess now they've set a new precedent, where a transfer sit-out and suspensions can run concurrently.

It's really a lose-lose situation for us... meaning they will make excuses to discredit our victory no matter who is playing QB...

Say we win and Grier is out - "Grier was out, they didn't play us at full strength. We would've won with Grier."

Say we win and Grier plays - "Grier hasn't played in a year and a half. He's rusty. If they played us in week 10 we would've killed them."

And we can say that we beat them with a QB who has never started at a D-I program. Checkmate.

That 2nd one is gonna be awful easy to argue away seeing as how we'll be starting a QB with 0 college game experience (plus a few receivers) and should see the same improvement as the season goes on.

So in your "lose-lose" scenario we win the game, but not the respect of WVU fans? I'll take that.

Oddly enough, if VT wins, I don't really care what they say. Actually, I don't care what they say, anyway, but I do want to see VT win. The winner doesn't need an excuse.

Grier looked excellent in their spring game film. Athletic, moves well, gets the ball out quick and accurately. Has chemistry with David Sills, who was an elite quarterback recruit that now projects as the Mountaineers top WR.

Wait he played in the spring game? So when the hell did he actually serve any suspension at all?

October 2015 - October 2016.

Honestly I don't really have a problem with him being eligible. If Florida wasn't going to give a fair shot at making the team, then the punishment is really 2 years which I think is overkill for a PED infraction that doesn't have a criminal offense associated with it. The whole point of the transfer rule is to prevent players from being recruited/poached away by other teams and I don't think that this violates the spirit of the rule.

Besides after we beat them I would rather them finish 8-4, not 4-8. Grier is good enough to make that sort of difference.

His suspension was from Oct-one year later, the clock stopped when he started his one year of sitting out to transfer. He could have gone to an FCS school or lower and done his suspension last year he chose not to.

I'll say this up front: I would have liked to see him sit two years because that seems more in line with the spirit of the rules. If you're gonna do enough to get suspended for a year, I'd think a transfer would be imminent anyway.

That said, I'm not sure the rule is clear on this. By allowing him to play, they're essentially setting a precedent until they actively change the wording of the rule to say that suspension and transfer years must happen sequentially.

He missed at least 19 games because of PEDs. I think the punishment is more than enough. The fact that he is playing in Morgantown and not Gainsville doesn't bother me. Some might even say that is whole another punishment.

Umm he missed WVU games because he chose to transfer. He also would not have been the starter at WVU last year.

He also would not have been the starter at WVU last year.

Disregarding the transfer rules for a second, but a lot of WVU fans (and probably Florida fans) would disagree with this statement.

So you're saying he wouldn't start, even if he was better, because he wouldn't have made a difference?

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

I can't say he is better last year 1) his play has been sporadic 2) his ceiling may be higher but can he connect with the WVU players especially with a senior as the starting QB 3) when did he start practicing with the team? Summer of 16 or not until fall?

Does anyone honestly think he would have still transferred if he hadn't been busted for PEDs? He was the starter with no signs of that changing. No one can say for sure he would have started for UF in 2016, but its hardly stretch to think he would have been the front runner. Getting busted spurred his transfer, because rightly or wrongly he thought he wasn't going to get a fair shot at UF.

I guess in the end, I object to his "time served" as it was his choice to leave Florida instead of serve his suspension there and fight for the starters roll once his suspension was up.

He missed at least 19 games because of PEDs.

He missed 14 games due to PEDs. He played the first six games of 2015, was eligible to return for the 7th game of the 2016 season. In addition to the 12 regular season games in the meantime, Florida also played in the SEC championship and a bowl game. Had he stayed at Florida, he would have been back on the field for the Georgia game last year.

If he hadn't gotten busted for PEDs, but still opted to transfer prior to last season, then he would have only missed the 13 games that WVU played last year.

Overall, he has missed 21 games. Based on the face value of the suspensions, he should have missed somewhere between 24-27 games. And based on the schedules of Florida and WVU, it should be the 8 games to end 2015 for Florida, the 13 games WVU played last year, and the first six games of 2016.

Florida intended to appeal the suspension to get him back for week 1 of 2016. Perhaps WVU was successful on that front, so in essence, his PED suspension was just the 8 games of 2015.

Yeah, just like that jerkstore QB from Syracuse that made our defense look stupid last season. If Holgs is smart, he'll have that game tape on repeat for the next two months.

My heart is telling me the Eer fans will be filing out mid-way through 3rd quarter from a scheme/talent gap perspective. But my gut is saying this going down to the wire given the Bristol debacle and the House of Horrors that is Fedex Field.

Well if his top receiver happens to be a converted quarterback going up against our DBs, I think we'll be okay.

Sucks, but this was my first thought as well.

Braxton Miller is an outlier. Sills started out as a QB, had no luck there, moved to WR, didn't like it, left the team, and then came back. Also, WVU doesn't have the luxury of being able to pull in athletes like Miller. Their recruiting class was worse than UVA's. I really hope Holgorsen and Spitval get pass-happy. Bud will make them pay. Inexperienced receivers coupled with a quarterback who won't have seen live game action in nearly two years? Please.

It will be interesting to see if this changes the line at all. I'm not sure if Vegas was planning for Grier to start but either way I always prefer to be the underdog when the line is tight.

I have done my duty today, TKP.

We played a lot of good QB's last year, this will just be another one to add to the list. We've made better QB's look bad, but he is a talented QB with a strong arm.

Grier is definitely talented, but WVU has put all of their eggs in him being eligible for this game. I bet a lot of their fans and people around the program would have been very worried if he had been ruled ineligible. They lost a good bit of offensive skill and a ton on the defensive side of the ball. They will be facing a very experienced defense and a load of explosive offensive skill players on our side, albeit largely unproven. His eligibility definitely makes this one more interesting, but I just don't see much else working in their favor for this one.

Eligible for a shit load of pain

I'm a little surprised by the blind optimism I see here. I'm expecting their offense to be much better than ours and our defense to be much better than their's. I have plenty of confidence that our offense will be a fine tuned machine by week 11, but I have my doubts about week 1.

So Grier had one really good game at Florida, right? I get that he's talented but has he really proven all that much yet? Does he have that much starting experience?

He started played in six games there, starting five of them. They won all six. I think he proved he was the real deal a decent quarterback.

Of course that just means it's time to end that streak.

you'd think he'd take a hint from George on this one:

But was it the normal Florida schedule of 4 cream puffs, Kentucky and Vanderbilt?

http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/559556/will-grier

Looks like it was New Mexico State as the cream puff, and he also put up pedestrian numbers again ECU, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri (all close wins except Missouri). The only game where he balled out was Ole Miss. I'd say if he doesn't have an Ole Miss type game then the good guys should retain the Black Diamond Trophy. West Virginia's defense is already in the Big 12 which makes them inherently bad but after all their losses I can't imagine they shut any of our 3 QB's down.

But how much of that was thanks to the juice? Did it ever come out what he got busted for?

Yeah. But those were in the SEC.

We put the K in Kwality

Mehhh he's a good Quarterback, but I'm not sure he's the 'real deal'. He has one good win against the 2015 Ole Miss team. His 6 wins also include an awful game against UK, slightly above average games against Tennessee and Missouri, and wins over ECU and New Mexico State.

He was good enough to hold leads and let a top defense do their job. IMO, there's not enough evidence to suggest that he can carry an offense. We shall see.

Maybe but four of those games were against teams who would go on to have loosing seasons: New Mexico State (3-9), ECU (5-7), UK (5-7), and Missouri (5-7). The two other teams he faced finished with winning records and in the top 25, Tennessee (9-4) and Ole Miss (10-3), but both of those wins came at home.

Edit: Fuente's Memphis team also beat Ole Miss that season

Fuente's Memphis team also beat Ole Miss that season

This^^^ Fuente is no dummy, FL played Ole Miss 2 weeks before Memphis did.

Grier Florida stats
2015 Gators season

Grier started five games. Treon Harris started the first game of the 2015 season against powerhouse New Mexico State. He started the second game against ECU, but still rotated with Harris. Grier was the starter, and only QB during the next four games. He threw 4 TDs against Ole Miss in the first half which was very impressive. Other than that game though, he didn't exactly light up the stat sheet.

Still, he did show some moments of being really good before he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug (Ligandrol-available OTC).

I feel like any offensive football player for Florida that had even a modicum of success during the Muschamp era is probably All-World-caliber.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

FWIW McElwein had already taken over in 2015.

Somebody who takes PEDs shouldn't be allowed to play again. 1) They broke the rules and the law. 2) They're still benefiting from the rule they broke after a suspension.

I don't know. 1) Not all PEDs are the same (ligandrol was OTC). Grier also did not intend on taking a banned substance, and even did his research to find out it if it was on the banned list, and at the time lingandrol was not on the list (although it was banned). 2) I don't know the specifics of this PED, but it is unclear how much benefit was truly received initially and I doubt it has a true ratchet effect like suggested. It does increase protein in muscle, but, to maintain that mass would require further work and it easily could be loss without an appropriate workout/diet scheme.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

He broke NCAA rules. Nothing he did was illegal in the since of the law. He took something that he thought was fine but didn't realize it contained a banned substance.

He should know what he put in his body and he was punished for it. He wasn't juicing up intentionally on a monthly basis or anything like that.

I think the bigger issue is he isn't being punished for it as the transfer supposedly eliminated his suspension.

I'm not saying I agree with the punishment. I'm just replying with my disagrement to the idea that he should be banned for life for making an honest mistake.

While I agree that he shouldn't be banned for life, I'm not at all convinced that taking a PED is "honest".

He was looking for an edge, and thought he could get away with it.

Maybe it was maybe it wasn't. He admitted that he didn't follow team protocol by clearing the drug through UF trainers. But still, I'm sure the list of banned substances by the NCAA is long. It's easy to see how this could've slipped through the cracks innocently enough.

Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He's what, 20? It's not the last dumb thing he'll do.

I mean he did decide to go to ShitHole WV to play football and be a college student.

There's a reason they randomly test athletes, and suspend them if they get caught doing this.

He just happened to be a very high profile player.

You can get this PED at GNC. I agree he should've known what was on the banned list but i really don't think what he did was that egregious. It's naive to think a large percentage of your favorite athletes aren't geared up at least part of the year.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

The standard procedure is to sanction the athletes who do this. They can always check with their athletic department for guidance as to whether it's banned.

Or, they can ignore the rules and take a chance on NCAA punishments. If they choose that route and get caught, I have little sympathy for them. He certainly didn't get a lot of sympathy from his coach.

You have to think of all the athletes who are following the rules, and don't get that extra advantage.

Wasn't he suspended right away, and thus standard procedures were followed? The issue lies in the fact that he transferred and thus, some of his suspension of the substance abuse overlapped with the eligibility rules related to transfers. Accordingly, there are no standard procedures when these overlap.

A case-by-case procedure seems fair and just. Any player who wants an "extra advantage" can do so at his own peril, as his case will be adjudicated on its own merits.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

NCAA sanctions for getting caught taking PEDs are appropriate.

I think you're right, NCAA sanctions are always case by case, but if the NCAA allows sanctions to overlap with transfer rules for one student, they're setting a precedent for anyone in a similar situation.

Well, Florida did kinda push him out. Is it fair to suspended, and then on top it, be pushed out by your team? So, Grier transfers at suggestion of his coach, not to circumvent the suspension.

IMO, it would be unjust to suspend him another year for an accident and "forced transfer." True, he should be at fault for the PEDs, but it wasn't egregious. True, he could have stayed at Florida, despite McEwain suggesting that he should go his separate way. But, in light of these circumstances, it just seems unjust to punish him further.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

But, in light of these circumstances, it just seems unjust to punish him further.

I get what you're saying, but I really want to see Settle, Walker & Associates punish him severely come Labor Day.
