UVA is a great academic school with a beautiful campus and they should be proud of national championships they've won in sports like soccer, tennis, indoor tennis, and lacrosse.
They also have a god awful football program and football culture at their school and should expect to get their annual throat punch this year when big brother comes into town and beats them for the 14th time in a row. And their food sucks.

To be fair I believe the moniker arose from the use of the term "cavalier" to describe young white male aristocrats in the pre-civil war south. It was part of the culture of chilvary, honor, and bravery in the antebellum south. Oh so fitting for the most pompous and pretentious school ever.

Well, if you dislike loluva more than I do, you've invented a new category of hate, but I feel no need to denigrate their national championships in order to lord it over them in football. I'd be more than happy to field a NC team in lax or tennis, or whatever, and I would be proud of the Hokies that participated, excelled, and made that happen, so they should rightly be proud of their accomplishments and their participants. I want to beat them in football, you bet, but I also want to beat them yearly in men's and women's basketball and baseball as well. Once we start doing that on a regular basis, I'll shift my give a shit to tennis and lax, soccer and swimming, or tiddly winks or whatever. It is a 1000000% chance UVa grads only fish with Orvis, wear their $110 trout "bum" shirts and proclaim to be more outdoorsy than VT grads. They also brag about how great Orvis reels and flies are. Hint, they are mediocre at best.
I realize there are like 3 people on here who will understand what I'm saying. But I'm talking some fly fishing trash here.

"Wind knots" is pretty much made up. While wind can technically cause knots in your line while casting, what you are experiencing is called a "tailing loop," where the line crosses over itself, most likely on the back cast. This is usually due to over powering on the casting stroke or shortening the casting stroke. It could also be from not properly moving your hand directly forward, but rather crossing it a bit in front of your body while casting.
The brush, well, it will get after ya.

Its unfortunate that we don't have a famous author alum who donated a bagillion dollars to overhaul the program overnight. That UVa baseball program was on its death bed before he saved it. Some programs actually have to build from the ground up.
The funny thing is, they don't realize how much UVa Baseball fits with the "born on 3rd and thinks they hit a triple" stereotype of the Hoo student body.

I think the fact that UVA fans would NOT be willing to trade their success in non-revenue sports for a strong football program is probably the exact reason they DON'T have a strong football program.

Some of those national championships are from the 2010's.
If we had 25 national championships combined in anything, we'd lord it over them. They've got a point. They set a high standard. The way to calm that criticism is to get competitive in some of those other sports. The best way to calm criticism is success.
Their football is nothing to brag about, though. Let's add a year to how long VT has held on to the Commonwealth Cup.
You want them to STFU? Bring home a national championship in football or baseball. Win the ACC. Go further than them in the NCAA tournament. I don't really mind if they hold on to their tiddlywinks championships from the '40s, or even if they win that this year.

I once had the choice of going to UVA vs VT. After visiting both campuses, it was not even close. Architecturally, VT's campus was/is way more advanced than UVA's. VT will always be my favorite school in Virginia. Selecting VT over UVA was the greatest decision I've ever made.

LOLUVa gets credit for aesthetics, but really, when you get away from the lawn, it's a cramped campus shoehorned in wherever they could buy land from city residents. All the buildings around the stadium look like someone saw the Soviet-era projects in Moscow and thought it was the best design ever.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Both. More importantly, I love football and didn't want to be miserable the rest of my life. Going winless in the commonwealth cup for over 10 years and watching spring games in empty stadium is misery.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Props to LOLUVa for their mid-major achievements. They have found the funding and had the drive to field competitive teams in a wide range of sports. They keep football for the revenue, but their mindset it tennis.
Personally I am glad that they have had this success, because it challenges us to up our game. I cant wait to see VT success all over the sporting map.
Us getting Whit is equivalent to "poking the bear" and I see tech methodically building programs which will beat LOLUVa and compete for NC's across the board. This was the first of many Commonwealth Clash victories to come.
Baseball is reported to dig a deeper financial hole than any other sport, but I think Whit has the drive to get us there. I predict our first *mid-major* NC is in baseball... this is not saying chef will beat CJF and Buzz.

Now, I might be biased.... but I find it extremely pathetic for a university to "roast" it's rival regarding a football topic with a tennis reference, then to follow it up with a homer UVA source writing a headline about how their school then roasted us with said pathetic reference.
Are they that delusional and far out of touch with reality? You'd think a school that prides themselves on being well educated wouldn't come off as being so stupid.

There was someone I went to high school with who finally got into UVA. From that point on, they had a bit of an inferiority complex because UVA was something like their 9th choice after all of the Ivy League schools said no. Of course, they had to cover up said complex with a superiority complex.
I'm sure there are others like that.

Not only was it a fairly lame shot( "we didn't read that because we were polishing trophies"), but then the article with it claims they "destroyed" us. Not even close. The Reds destroyed the Cubs fans with their Bandwagon Fan Cam, this was nerd thinking they know how to talk trash and finding themselves to be the only one in the room laughing at the joke.

in "what have you done for me lately" news, VT are the current holders of the commonwealth clash title as well. We tied head to head, but our 4 ACC Team titles won us the tie breaker...so if they're trying to play the one trick pony card on us... A competition that goes far beyond the football field...

Apparently their Atlantic opponent is the one thing holding them back from winning the Coastal every year. Who knew. Oh, and they'll be an upper-tier ACC team by 2020.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I am astounded at the insanity over there. I mean, every fanbase has their irrationally optimistic fans, but what are these people smoking? What in the world makes you think you are building towards being a contender for the ACC in the next 3 years? One guy: "with current build in place, we sniff at the upper tier of the Coastal in 3-4 seasons . . . we will have the guys to compete every week for the W." Do they even pay attention to recruiting? You've lost/are about to lose practically all of the handful of highly rated guys London recruited, and Bronco is replacing them with guys whose only P5 offers are UVa. The talent level there is absolutely trending in the wrong direction if they expect to be relatively competitive anytime soon. Awfully confident/arrogant fanbase for a team coming off a 2-10 season with recruiting in the toilet, but I wouldn't expect any less from the Hoos.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Oddly, the only thing that gives them hope is the way Beamer bootstrapped VT up by recruiting underrated talent.
Beamer managed to do that, but talent evaluation and the the availability of information has progressed since then. A lot of Beamer's recruits were underrated. Also, Beamer was excellent at developing the talent he did recruit. There was a method to what Beamer did. His long-range vision was excellent, and he was at the right place at the right time, with strong support from the university. There was an excitement about VT football even in the years just before Beamer was hired. See: Bruce Smith.
The Hoos aren't likely to duplicate Beamer's success. I think the following quote sums it up adequately: "Hope isn't much of a plan."
We just need to keep up our end, and keep that Commonwealth Cup in Blacksburg.

Unfortunately, it's a big jump from winning the coastal to winning the ACC (see VT, 2016).
I don't think they were watching the same game. Talent level, it is a pretty big jump and I wasn't expecting us to win, but we were driving to tie the game. It was a lot closer than expected.
Even when we've had some very good teams, ranked and competing for ACC Coastal championship, we've managed to lose to Tech. Often times this game decided who won the coastal, or whether or not we go to a bowl game. We've got to do that first.
By "often times" you mean once. And I'm pretty sure the "whether or not we go to a bowl game" was once as well

EDIT: Given Fireman's comment, it appears that it does not.
This quote is from the article, though: "The gift to the University provides funding for scholarships, annual operational support and facility enhancements for the men's and women's squash programs. Future fundraising, led by University Advancement, will ensure all expenses for both squash programs will be covered. "
Also: "When I arrived four years ago, my long-term goal was to compete for a national championship. With the addition of scholarship positions, we will be able to expand our range into international recruiting."
So I guess they feel they can pad their lofty (non-NCAA) national championship total.

"With this move, Virginia becomes the first Power 5 school to sponsor varsity men's squash. UVA joins Stanford as the only Power 5 schools to sponsor varsity women's squash. "
It's funny on some level but scary and sad on another. LOLUVA has private donors willing to fully fund a non NCAA sport including full on scholarships, using zero dollars from the athletic department and the Hokies are still struggling to fully fund scholarships for real varsity NCAA sports.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Found the funds by dipping into operating revenues also having to use that operating revenue for scholarships. I'm just amazed that UVA as bad as they are at the single most important sport compared to Tech can still get all these donations. They are well on their way to getting the 65 million for new indoor practice facility.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
UVA has some alumni with cash. They have a $5 billion endowment. They also have Paul Tudor Jones, a billionaire hedge fund owner, who donates millions for yoga buildings.
In spite of all of that, student fees are $13 million of their $97 million budget (numbers from 2015). Every student pays a $657 athletics fee, about twice as much as that at VT, and higher than their med fee.
What, you thought all those championships were free?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It also helps when your athletic budget doesn't have to construct or maintain the facility. Boar's Head Inn has built and is already upgrading one of (if not the) best squash facility in the country. BHI is owned by the UVA Foundation, so there is a connection, but not a direct one. They also host LOLUVA indoor tennis matches.

Yeah but how many people actually show up and support those teams?
We might not have championships in those sports, but we have a better fanbase.
Q: How many people have ever seen LOLUVA win a national championship?
A: No one knows
I prefer to think of it as even though they have all those championships, we're still better than them.
About the same amount that show up for the Spring festival.... NOT MANY!
Because that doesn't happen anywhere else.
Scoreboard x 13.
Fairly certain UVA would trade all 25 of those championships in men's figure skating to beat us in football just once.

An assist, IIRC, that was directly attributable to pressure from the Gov.

That being said, I am impressed with their success in the "lesser" sports. I just don't really care all that much.
Hey, I think a national championship in anything is great.
It just has nothing to do with the Commonwealth Cup.
It is a little asinine. It'd be like Germany tweeting out a picture of their World Cup Trophies and the USNT responding with "BUT HOW ABOUT THOSE TWO WORLD WARS HUH?"
wait are we germany or the USNT in this metaphor?
Yes.
.
Nothing is over 'till we decide it is...
We're Germany in this metaphor.
I mean, I could totally see LOLUVa being Germany here. "We kicked your ass when it mattered, you know, as it matters in battle." "Yeah, well we won the world cup 5 times!!"
You could flip it. But it's a total UVA move to brag about how good you were in the 40's.
For all the poking fun at their olympic sport NC's that UVA has, the fact that they have a RECENT Baseball one is relevant (and sucks to acknowledge).
Wholeheartedly agree with VTkey, lets keep kicking their butts in football and improve across the board.
I once had the choice of going to UVA vs VT. After visiting both campuses, it was not even close. Architecturally, VT's campus was/is way more advanced than UVA's. VT will always be my favorite school in Virginia. Selecting VT over UVA was the greatest decision I've ever made.
I was looking at schools for architecture, engineering and hard sciences. UVA wasn't even a consideration.
Are you saying you chose VT because of their top tier architecture program or because you thought the buildings were prettier?
yes
Sauce.
LOLUVa gets credit for aesthetics, but really, when you get away from the lawn, it's a cramped campus shoehorned in wherever they could buy land from city residents. All the buildings around the stadium look like someone saw the Soviet-era projects in Moscow and thought it was the best design ever.
Both. More importantly, I love football and didn't want to be miserable the rest of my life. Going winless in the commonwealth cup for over 10 years and watching spring games in empty stadium is misery.
#DoingHardThingsTogether
All 2 of them on Twitter...
"People who brag about how smart they are, are never as smart as they claim." - Colin Cowherd on the infamous UVA Rant.
There was someone I went to high school with who finally got into UVA. From that point on, they had a bit of an inferiority complex because UVA was something like their 9th choice after all of the Ivy League schools said no. Of course, they had to cover up said complex with a superiority complex.
I'm sure there are others like that.
I check out The Sabre every so often because I feed off of misery, and I can almost exactly quote one Hoo "I wouldn't trade my UVA degree for anything, unless it was something like Stanford or Harvard."
"I wouldn't trade our lone 21st century football victory over the Hokies for anything, unless it was something like two football victories over the Hokies this millennium"

Dude, that comment was questionable enough, but replying to your own set up just makes it worse.
too soon

For that comment, it will always be too soon.

Fun discussion going on over at le sabre
What year would you set the O/U at for our next div. title & conf. title?
I clicked on it.
Wasn't worth the time it took to read it. It just reminded me that TKP is so much more entertaining at every level.
Some wonderful information in there.
Apparently their Atlantic opponent is the one thing holding them back from winning the Coastal every year. Who knew. Oh, and they'll be an upper-tier ACC team by 2020.
Two slightly funny tidbits from the thread.
I don't think they were watching the same game. Talent level, it is a pretty big jump and I wasn't expecting us to win, but we were driving to tie the game. It was a lot closer than expected.
By "often times" you mean once. And I'm pretty sure the "whether or not we go to a bowl game" was once as well
It decided the Coastal twice, 2007 and 2011.
Ahh shit, they're going to pile on the Natty titles now... with their zero competition
why did they feel the need to differentiate between men's and women's?
Title IX requirement.
That's about it.
Nope it's not an NCAA sport. Doesn't count against scholarships in fact private donors are paying entire costs.

"With this move, Virginia becomes the first Power 5 school to sponsor varsity men's squash. UVA joins Stanford as the only Power 5 schools to sponsor varsity women's squash. "

Edit: This isn't disagreement with HokieFireman. I just thought this was interesting.
RIP Charlie Murphy
It's funny on some level but scary and sad on another. LOLUVA has private donors willing to fully fund a non NCAA sport including full on scholarships, using zero dollars from the athletic department and the Hokies are still struggling to fully fund scholarships for real varsity NCAA sports.
VT found the funds to pay some pretty great coaches for football, basketball, and baseball.
So VT has the right priorities. Also, I think VT has been taking steps in the right direction related to fundraising, ticket sales, etc.
UVa definitely has some wealthy donors, though. Who are into yoga, meditation, and apparently squash.
Found the funds by dipping into operating revenues also having to use that operating revenue for scholarships. I'm just amazed that UVA as bad as they are at the single most important sport compared to Tech can still get all these donations. They are well on their way to getting the 65 million for new indoor practice facility.
It also helps when your athletic budget doesn't have to construct or maintain the facility. Boar's Head Inn has built and is already upgrading one of (if not the) best squash facility in the country. BHI is owned by the UVA Foundation, so there is a connection, but not a direct one. They also host LOLUVA indoor tennis matches.
Since UVA likes to compare numbers, here's a few for them:
Football Conference Titles in past 25 years: VT 7 (4 ACC, 3 Big East), UVA 0
ACC Championship Game Appearances: VT 6, UVA 0
Number of Consecutive Bowl Appearances: VT 24 (most in NCAA), UVA 0
Consecutive Winning Seasons: VT 24, UVA 0
Years Since Last 10-loss Season: VT 67 (1950), UVA 0 (2016)
Yes, our trophy case might be a little light on tennis trophies. But our Conference Championship trophies look pretty good.
10 win seasons:
VT- 15
LOLUVa- 1
Nice statistics.
Maybe we need to put you in charge of Twitter.
Thanks, but I thought the original tweet pointing out that Virginia Tech has beaten UVA 13 straight times in the sport most people care about was pretty good too.
Bowl game championships are important trophies. VT has won plenty of bowl games trophies, including the Belk bow; crown in coach Fuente's first season. I haven't been paying attention , but I can't remember the last time UVA won a bowl game.
I actually had to look it up. It was the 2005 Music City Bowl.
And so much for their "our bowl game is Thanksgiving weekend" attitude.
Probably had Pac10 referees...
I found this so funny I actually looked it up. Bill Nathan is WAC. Bielema threw a fit when he found out Bill was scheduled to ref a game he was in and tried to it changed to a BIG crew. He said he would never play with a WAC crew because a MWC screwed him in the Outback bowl. You have now made my morning twice.

LOLUVA football has something going for it:
UVA Football Player Wins Lottery
At least he gets one win this year.
He could sponsor a couple of tiddlywinks scholarships and get them headed toward another NC.
Hey, let's not dismiss the entire alumni base over the pretentiousness of a few...hundred thousand.
LOLUVa gets honorable mention for two games as "most intriguing" 2017
link
Meanwhile we get honorable mention for best OOC neutral site game (WVU) and best conference championship preview game (Clemson).
They get ill-advised scheduling and game without a touchdown. LOL@LOLUVA.
There is a thread going on LeSabre hyping Blanding and Kiser. Can someone go post the GIFs of Blanding getting owned by Malleck couple years ago and Cam last year?
LeSabre
Now, now. Since they only seem to have two guys on their defense that can even make a tackle, let 'em enjoy their typical one or two player hype. We gonna whup 'em again, just the same.
