Virginia Tech quarterback commit Quincy Patterson played his way into The Opening with an impressive outing at the Elite 11. And the 6-3, 236 pound Solorio Academy signal caller generated quite a buzz at Nike's premier competition for elite high school football players. Interviews and analysis in chronological order from those who saw Patterson in person.
Couple other recruits at The Opening who looked the part today: WR Jalen Hall, QB Quincy Patterson, WR Josh Moore, QB Matt Corral.— Paul Myerberg (@PaulMyerberg) June 29, 2017
Barton Simmons of 247Sports listed Patterson among his top day one performers.
The Virginia Tech commit may legitimately have the highest ceiling of any quarterback in attendance. USC quarterback Sam Darnold was on hand throwing as a counselor and Patterson's delivery was very similar to Darnold in terms of the way he throws a football with power and ease. There's no loading up on big throws for Patterson.
VaTech commit Quincy Patterson has an NFL arm. Doesn't labor to make any throws. Ball jumps out of his hand.— Barton Simmons (@bartonsimmons) June 29, 2017
Keep hearing great things about Va Tech QB commit Quincy Patterson. Elite 11 coaches love his intangibles. One called him best leader here.— Paul Myerberg (@PaulMyerberg) June 30, 2017
Patterson also impressed Simmons with his day two performance.
Patterson at No. 5 begins what I thought was a delineation in tiers. From here on out are guys that really separated in my eyes. Patterson is the most intriguing guy at the event without question. The Virginia Tech commit just slowly gets better and has the most rare body at the event and one of the event's biggest arms.
With @bartonsimmons, particularly at #5. I'm a huge Quincy Patterson fan. Multiple coaches have said he can win "multiple Heismans." #Hokies https://t.co/lcZPBxX4U0— Stephen Nelson (@Stephen__Nelson) July 1, 2017
Patterson reaffirmed his Hokies commitment to Allen Trieu of Scout despite overtures from marquee Power Five programs.
"Oregon contacted me, Ohio State, and then Penn State when Justin Fields de-committed, but other than that, people took my 100% committed seriously, which I wanted them to."
Patterson reiterated that nothing has changed with that even with these schools coming after him. He is recruiting on behalf of the Hokies this week with tight end target Kyle Pitts among the names he is working on. His loyalty to the Hokies boils down to several factors.
"Originally, it was the coaches," he explained, "and once I went on a visit and saw the engineering facility, when they took me over and I saw that, it was a done deal. Then what has kept me there is the coaching staff. They are dedicated to the students and players. [Head coach Justin Fuente] just signed another contract, so he's here to stay. It's a great feeling knowing your head coach isn't going anywhere anytime soon."
Patterson expounded upon how Tech's engineering program sealed the deal for his verbal.
Patterson shared a perceptive perspective on his experience.

Members of Tech's 2018 recruiting class took exception that recruiting reporter Hank South pegged Patterson with this pick.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports summarized Patterson's play.
Virginia Tech quarterback commit Quincy Patterson has every physical tool you want in a quarterback but the 7-on-7 tournament with the speed he was seeing on the field was not what he's accustomed to back home in Chicago. The talented passer has only been playing under center for three years and it showed in this setting. But, Patterson is as natural a thrower of the football as there is in this class and he couldn't of made a better decision on where to go to develop his game in college. Justin Fuente has a strong track record and Patterson has a chance to grow into his next NFL guy.
Luke Stampini of 247Sports ranked Patterson No. 8 of 12 quarterbacks following 7-on-7 play.
Virginia Tech commit Quincy Patterson checked down more than the rest of the quarterbacks and rarely went down the field with his throws. Despite that, he was only able to complete 64-percent of his throws. Patterson finished with two touchdowns and four interceptions on the day.
Paul Myerberg of USA Today evaluated the Elite 11 QBs at The Opening, and it's full steam ahead for the Patterson hype train.
Every person who came into contact with Patterson this week — fellow players, coaches, even the media — fell in love with the future Virginia Tech signee. He's smart. Driven. In terms of his intelligence, Patterson reminded many of former Elite 11 participant Josh Dobbs, who just completed his career at Tennessee.
And he's only scratching the surface of his potential as a quarterback, [Elite 11 coach Yogi] Roth said. "I wouldn't be surprised if he wins some major awards in college football once his career gets going."
From the outside looking in on the under-the-microscope scrutiny The Opening provides, with Patterson, Fuente secured the services of a quarterback who has all the tools and whose best football is ahead of him.

I couldn't be more hyped. Get this kid on campus!
Awesome summary of everything that's been put out there about Patterson in the last week or so. Thanks Joe!
I like that in a very short interview, he managed to mention that he visited the engineering building. Seems to have a good perspective on the concept of "student athlete".
Hopefully like a Josh Dobbs
Makes me wonder how many recruiting misses Randolph Hall is responsible for.
"Multiple Heismans"...that'll get'cha going in the morning.
Damn you need to stop my penis can only get so erect
trying not not visu...a....lize.
Great write up. Sounds like the future QB competition will be epic.
What competition?
Less than a year ago the idea of Josh Jackson as the QB of the future took off as reports indicated he was pushing Evans for the starting job going into the fall. Then Hooker committed and everyone has been extremely high on him, including Mason who stated he could be an ideal fit for Fuente's offense. So yeah, despite the attention Patterson has been deservedly getting the QB battle should be pretty intense in the coming years.
I know, I was just joking because we have a future winner of multiple Heismans coming in
Ho, Ho, Ho! Santa Fuente keeps 'em coming. Whit Babcick's been a VERY good boy! Thanks to both (and the rest of the staff)
Hnnnnnnng
Early signing period can't get here fast enough.
Also not noted in the article, QP is only 16 years old, will be 17 when he enrolls. He could still grow and his arm is only going to get stronger. The ceiling is the roof for this kid.
If his frame fills out even more and he grows an inch or two, we might have an elite tight end.
Say TE again MF? Say TE one more MF time? Do they speak English in "What?"
Love me some Samuel MF Jackson
OT. An all time favorite movie.
Man, I keep becoming more and more of a fan of this kid. Not only is he extremely athletic and talented, but he just has a good head on his shoulders. A true leader.
Multiple Heismans! How many times does this get mentioned about a recruit? That seems a little over the top.
I think the guy made a great decision to learn the art of CornFu. He also doesn't have Trevor Lawrence's haircut, which is a huge plus. I can't wait to see him going toe-to-toe with Hooker and Jackson for the starting spot. What a QB room in just a short amount of time!
That's rocket scientist Josh Dobbs
That is champion of life Josh Dobbs. Championships are always more important.
Just would like to point out that according to US News & World Report - UT has the #63 ranked undergraduate engineering program while VT has the #16. Quincy is already a winner.
And for what it's worth, UVA is right in the middle of a 5 way tie at #32.
If you take a look at Dobbs' offer list you can tell he didn't emphasize academics in his decision making in spite of being a really bright kid. He could have played FBS ball at Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford.
Duke is the only one of those that offered.
I would have never guessed uva was that high up the list.
Also is your ranking only for public colleges?
Here's a link to the rankings https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate.
This does take into account the Graduate and Doctorate levels, which I have heard are actually decent at uva, rather than only the undergraduate. I have never heard the uva undergraduate engineering school to be anything to write home about.
FTFY
LOLUVA has an engineering program?
I f*cking love how much this kid likes engineering, and I'm not even an engineer
I haven't been this excited for a QB recruit since Tyrod, and Marcus before him. And even then, I am starting to get the feeling QP might have the higher ceiling. And seeing that we're securing some very good OL to keep his ass off the ground... Don't get me wrong, I think this year we're going to be a good team, but in 2018 and beyond you are going to see a legitimate push back to national prominence and legitimate Natty title contention. I think we're setting ourselves up to legitimately pair an excellent schemed offense to go with what looks to be a replenished and deeply talented Bud Foster defense.
Just looking toward the future, 2018 through at least 2020 we're looking to be stacked in football and basketball. We're going to be kickin ass and taking names from August to April. And then we'll be able to chill in a state of the art baseball venue during the summer. Wow
Your post is, well, legitimate.
2 legit 2 quit
I was happy when he signed, but i'm ecstatic after all of the events post-signing. I didn't realize how impressive he is. I haven't been this optimistic in a QB signing since Tyrod.
1) Does Tyrod get involved with any of the recruits/signees? I know there are those on here who have brought up Mike Vick but Tyrod is for a newer generation and currently in the NFL.
2) "NFL calibur arm"! Excited to see him progress even further. It's been a while since someone this ready to play has come to VT, not being a transfer.
3) "Best leader here". Yes please.
4) Love the focus on education. Show this kid the wind tunnel while you're at it.
5) The way our recruits are already starting to gel, even thought their senior year seasons haven't even started yet, is seriously impressive. It's as if our 2018 recruiting is snow balling and I don't recall the last time we've seen this. I can't see how this doesn't continue for the 2019 class as well.
(Fantastic compilation here Joe, thanks for this)
Good call, you can never be too ready for the next UNC game.
But it wasn't windy or rainy when we were on the field.
So basically any archway on campus during winter, or the drillfield at pretty much any time of the year?
I used to love watching people get blown over in the tunnels. Wind+slate+a bit of rain=hilarious
I always warned freshmen wet Hokie stone was the 2nd most slippery substance known to man.
Frozen-over Hokie stone was #1.
This is the best example of "it's funny because it's true" that I've ever seen.
Super excited about Patterson's potential, but I literally rolled my eyes at
Reminded me of this ridiculousness : Remember the great Ron Powlus? No?
While we're at it, Dwayne Lawson will be the savior of our program, provided he doesn't transfer. We should totally hire his HS coach to lock down his commitment...
Dude even throws up the VT sign in the proper orientation. He can read! That's awesome!
Gotta love this guy.
Someone get Urban Meyar some Papa Johns. QP ain't taking calls from Columbus.
Don't make us send Sam Rogers in there again to remind him to stop calling.
This kid seems solid but he is still young. Everyone from Alabama to Akron is going to offer. LOI day please come!
Just....disturbing
So QP is pretty much a 5* without 5 stars...got it!
Stars are actually based on how many Heismans you will win
It's amazing how many players win 3-5 Heismans while still in HS.
I may get slammed here, but can we not put this on QP2?
Yes, he is trending very positive and yes, he is a tremendous leader from what I've seen, but he's only been playing ball for 5 years. He's only been a QB for 3. He is still very raw.
We've been super high on QP2 and while he was in the top 5 after day 2, and top 8 on Sunday, but 247 released their final rankings and QP2 was 11/12. I have the utmost faith that QP2 will be a tremendous QB and I'm thinking NFL bound. I said that about Lawson as well however.
I think it's going to take some time and mentoring from CornFu, but don't expect him the walk on water from day 1.
People are always going to hype the newest QB we have coming in. Its just going to happen. Last signing day the same thing happened with Hooker being a true freshman savior. The comparisons to Tyrod I've seen on here are so stupid but QB is a fun position to get excited about, especially with a known QB coach in Fuente.
The most depth the team has ever had at QB? Probably.
The most depth at WR? Probably.
The most dynamic offensive scheme they've ever had? Probably.
Dear Fuente... thank you.
Is he crying because someone is making him watch The CW?
He's crying because CW stands for Crying Wussies.
haha, reminds me of this:

So he is the 11th best QB in the country, still really dang good considering your second paragraph. I think people are looking entirely at his trajectory and assuming it is linear, which would have him becoming Flash Gordon. I liken it to a manufacturing process, we have seen Fuente take average raw materials and turn them into good products, now it looks like he will be getting high quality raw materials so he should be able to turn them into great products.
I agree! But after really digging into the 247 rankings, 5* are supposed to be rare. Everyone here is clamoring for more stars but from all the reports, he's where he needs to be. He's developing and learning. The reason the guys ahead of him are 4 and 5 is because they have way more polish. They've been going to camps for years, play for some of the best high school coaches in the business, and have already been playing for a decade plus.
It's a big task and there will be some growing pains but I'm hoping he pans out.
if I remember correctly, they try to limit 5* to 32 recruits, corresponding to 32 first round picks in the draft. That way it's easier to keep track of what percentage are still considered must-haves four years down the road. That's 32 players across all positions. Not surprising you don't have a ton of QBs on that list since they don't want to be the service rating players really high and then look bad when those players aren't 1st round picks when they graduate.
100% correct. They are basically locks to play in the NFL. 4* tend to have quite a bit more that are very likely to play in the NFL and should start at some point in their career. 3* are high quality players who may need some development but have an NFL shot. 2* are players that may start their junior/senior year of college.

Thanks for the link. Interesting to see that there were 3 other ACC commits there as well:
NC State - Devin Leary (9th)
UNC - Tyler Shough (7th)
Clemson - Trevor Lawrence (4th) dude needs a haircut btw
I love the tweets the other commits are putting out there about the pick.
As they should have. The tweet totally should have read "Drop by so-and-so leads to INT" rather than "QP throws INT", poor twitter journalism giving QP a bad name.
I just hope the so-and-so wasn't Kyle Pitts...
He's got a lot of great qualities. Can't believe he's 16!
Turning 17 today.
Doesn't look like QP's performance at the opening is going to translate to a rating bump. Most top performers already received theirs. None the less, couldn't be happier to have him.
they already said they are going to wait until after this season to see his stats since he didn't have many last year which is dumb but I get it
Correct. 247 also named him "Most Likely To Earn Another Star" when they gave out their "Elite11 Superlatives"
I think it also said it would be based on continuing his level of play, which he's certainly done so far. I love his arm, size, and everything about this kid regardless of a 4th star but would be nice for our already insane Class Ranking. Fuente finding this kid in Chicago also, before all the hype, is so exciting and impressive to me as well. This staff is so far ahead of schedule imo
Fine with me, keep him at 3 stars until December so that the NCAA big fish won't be as inclined to try to steal him. Smart, strong, and among the 10 best QB's available? Yes please!
Well, Penn St. did already make a very strong push to steal him during the Elite11. But I guess we'd have to fine "big fish." His star rating really won't affect how he's perceived sat this point, just continuied performance.
