Trey Outlaw to Likely to Miss Upcoming Buzzketball Season

Virginia Tech's Ty Outlaw, among college basketball's best 3-point shooters, likely will miss the entire 2017-18 season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a pickup game.

Outlaw had surgery July 11 and has started rehabbing, a team spokesman said Monday morning.

"As good a kid as there is," Hokies coach Buzz Williams said via text. "Hate that it happened, but injuries are a part of sports."

A redshirt senior, Outlaw missed the 2015-16 season with a heart ailment. He could petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility. Otherwise, his college career is over.

That's terrible news and unfortunate luck for Ty who seemed to come into his own as last season progressed.

Let's Go

HOKIES

Tough news, he was a huge surprise during the second half of last season. If he isn't granted a six year of eligibility, it would open up a scholarship this year via medical hardship. Otherwise he'll eat a scholarship this year and next.

Well we would have an extra scholarship in 2018-19 for him. Currently projecting 12 scholarship players that year, and that's even assuming we pick up another 2017 recruit or two more in the 2018 class.

Anyone want to take a stab at how our minutes will be spread out now?

This is correct and intentional.

Ty "Trey" outlaw because he is a 3 point specialist.

HOKIES

"Trey" bien.

Was worth the comment to find that out.

Thanks!

I was starting to wonder if he also goes by Trey. Glad I'm not going crazy.
EDIT: Noooow I get it. Thanks dragone.

HOKIES

Hate this for him. Hopefully he can bet back to 100%. Man he got it going last year toward the end of the season.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuuuuck

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

Ban Outlaw pickup games!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Well dang.

Not great news to start the week, but I think we'll be ok in the long run. As great of a shooter as Outlaw was last year, he could be a liability on defense at times. We were going to be a pretty deep team this upcoming season anyway, but now we'll see what we've really got from the kids who haven't suited up yet. NAW will definitely be getting some run, plus Pig Jackson and Wabissa Bede should get some minutes next to J-Rob. And depending on Chris Clarke's recovery timeline, we might end up ok in the front court.

Shame. Good thing we got interchangeable wings. Still gonna miss him in that lineup.

Surprised Buzz allows pickup games for his scholarship guys.

Pretty standard. Not like he was playing on a blacktop against locals wanting to relive their glory days. Probably playing with the team while in summer classes.

How do you know where he was playing or with whom? I know at VCU the players were not allowed to play against students not part of the team or practice squad and had to do so in VCU basketball facilities. Like football I'm guessing the players are allowed access to the facility to have player run practices.

I mean, it was pretty common to see the basketball team playing at McComas during pick up hours. That was under JJ however. I severely doubt they were doing anything but pick ups with students/other athletes.

Was that before the basketball practice facility was completed? Because if its just guys on the team, you'd think they should just keep it to courts that no one else can play on anyway.

Sorry, didn't see this yesterday. I really started going to McComas in 2012 and left the burg in 2015. I can confirm even with the new practice facility, the varsity basketball players still had their shoes laced up for pick ups in the gym.

I used to see the team up at McComas quite a bit out of season. But the only non bball players that I remember seeing were football players. Seemed like everyone else knew the only outcome of being on that court was being embarrassed

How do you know where he was playing or with whom?

D1 teams routinely do this over the summer. I highly doubt that they were playing students or what we normally would think of as a "pick-up" game. I highly, highly, highly, highly doubt it was with anyone other than fellow Hokie basketball players.

Antone Exum was allowed to play pickup basketball

Too soon...

Next man up. NAW, it's time.

I used to AD Vasallo up at War gym playing pick-up games, but he coasted and played basic defense, which was great to see from a fan perspective. I would think Outlaw would be instructed to do the same. Who knows, may have planted a foot right on top of another in a routine play.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Can we ever go one year without a season-ending basketball injury or illness?????

Then it's not really Hokie basketball.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Well this really sucks. I would be surprised if he wasn't granted a 6th year though, with all he's been through.

If anybody qualifies, it should be Outlaw.

Why wouldn't he be granted an extra year, considering the injury happened before the season even started? Is there a limit on the # of medical-related redshirt years a player can have?

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

The first season missed due to injury can use a redshirt IF the player has not already redshirted. If he then misses a second season due to injury, he can apply for an exemption from the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility. It is not a foregone conclusion and you may not get a 7th year.

If he wants it he is going to get it. NCAA has gotten more liberal granting these

I can think of 8 reasons from last year's miami game alone why this sucks.

the non conference schedule has been released at least

Home games are a bit of a snoozer: Detroit Mercy, The Citadel, Houston Baptist, Morehead State, Iowa, Radford, UMES, Presbyterian, NC A&T

I understand that Detroit Mercy, Houston Baptist and Iowa were assigned games by ESPN so we can't really control those, but I feel like we should have tried to schedule at least 1-2 better RPI teams out of the other 6.

2026 Season Challenge: TBD

this blows!

"I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them." - Lee Corso

This is where I'm thankful that Buzz has completely bolstered up our depth. Under Seth, this kind of injury would have blown up the season. Under Buzz, its next man up.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Hate to see this happen. Ty deserved the year he had last year. He will be a missed piece for sure, but he came with an pretty high defensive setback. Still, his three pointers changed many a game last season. Disappointing, but not season crushing. Next man up.

Always choose joy.

To put a different spin on it, Ty (should) be back for our 2018-2019 season which many people believe will be the year where it all comes together for this team. Several key contributors will be veterans and the young talent we're bringing in will have some experience as well. Bringing Ty back into the mix for that could be a lot of fun.

That's if he comes back. Could be a win-win if he decides to leave. Opens up a scholarship for a Freshman that could already be at Ty's level. Gives him a chance to go play overseas. Injuries/medical are starting to add up, he might go and chase a contract with a degree in hand.

Always choose joy.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Not sure where to put this, but Chris Clarke was out playing some pickup today as well -- that ACL looked perfectly fine to me. He wasn't going full speed, but he has full mobility.

Thanks for the update Doc!
