The BYU game is the biggest, however, the first meeting between the schools in football. The Hokies will host the Cougars in Blacksburg on Sept. 26, 2026, before making a return trip to Provo, Utah, on Sept. 14, 2030.
The new ODU agreement adds games in each season from 2026-2031, with the even numbered years in Blacksburg and odd numbered years in Norfolk. The Hokies and Monarchs already had seven games on the schedule through 2025, starting with the programs' first-ever football meeting in Blacksburg this year on Sept. 23. ODU is in its fourth year in the Football Bowl Subdivision and is a member of Conference USA.
The Hokies will play Liberty six times from now until 2030. The schools had a previously scheduled 2020 game in Blacksburg. Tech will make two trips to Lynchburg to play the Flames in 2022 and 2030, while Liberty will come to Blacksburg three more times in 2027, 2028 and 2029. The games in 2022 and 2027 will take place Nov. 19 and 20, respectively, presumably before the traditional late-season game against Virginia.

Well my Hokie Club membership was fun while it lasted. Games AT Liberty, nope.

But.... who's going to tell people to join the Hokie Club now?
Whit better hope we reach the 25k before we get to games AT Liberty. What a joke, an AD who helped hide sexual assaults and police coverups and we should be canceling all events with them not adding home games.
Heads will roll!
Fire Whit Babcock! Fire the Hokie Club! Fire the Hokie Bird!
Or just cancel the games. You know the easier and more sensible option.
I'm just not sure this was a "Drive for 25" kind of move.
In looking at it, though, it's clearly filling in the two easier (and local) G5 teams per year to fill out the schedule, along side a pretty decent OOC matchup and one midweight P-5 OOC matchup.
It's the formula, and it's what teams do right now to win their conference and compete for the playoffs.
Go play at a new FBS independent with a sexual assault coverup AD?
Play easy, local g5 teams.
Except they aren't G5.
They'll be a full FBS member in 2019.
But not "Group of five" since they won't be in a conference.
A distinction without a difference.
It's an FBS opponent that's not in the Power 5.
Sure looks like the formula to me.
There are dozens of those teams, this doesn't excuse a thing.
You beat me by 26 seconds! I am glad I am not the only one not happy about the 2022 game at Liberty. There is zero chance I spend a dime to go to a game at that place.
I had this debate in another thread a month or so ago... I honestly don't see it as being any different than playing ECU or ODU. By 2022, Liberty will probably have found a home in a G5 conference. At least we aren't playing there every other season. There are a ton of other schools I'd rather go see a game, but at least it's conveniently located. I'll be there and it will easily sellout, regardless of how many Tech fans don't want to go.
So what if they make it into a G5 conference? Even if Liberty made it into a P5 conference it wouldn't change the fact that it's Liberty. And I want nothing to do with that "school."
I know Falwell is pretty polarizing, but still didn't realize people had such visceral reactions to Liberty. Is this a longstanding thing or is it just outrage over their new AD?
For me it's solely the new AD, how he was introduced, and the disdain they (Liberty) had for anyone who questioned the hire at the time. I don't take Liberty the university itself seriously but I don't dislike them or the poeple who go there to get degrees.
Woah! I have my masters in special ed from there. Some programs are a joke but the education department is pretty good. Don't judge everyone because of a few stupid people. I consider myself pretty damn smart.
My issue stems from their online degree factory push. Especially their grab for military and public safety agency money.
Worked in the military affairs department settling a lot of issues for three years. Pushing the divinity degree made me uneasy since a lot of students used it to get chaplain and a big pay raise. When it came to other benefits, a lot of the VA departments pushed students there because we were cheaper than sending them residential. But I agree, it's became a fat cow and waters down over populated degrees.
I only have one question for you sir, respectfully, am I supposed to take a religious college seriously that has to audacity to publicly support Creationism/Intelligent Design while handing out degrees in education, which would necessitate an awareness of the fact of evolution? Please don't answer...I like believing Hokies are smarter than the rest of humanity,
When you look at how much LU values $$$, the AD hire should come as no surprise at all.
Just look here: http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2016/november/28/liberty-hires-former-...
As someone who spent their high school years in Lynchburg, I know at least there it's been a thing for a while. There were a lot of people seriously unhappy when they put the giant LU on the mountain.
I think one of the turning points for me was when they gave out a free iPod with enrollment. Mind you this was around 2002-2003 when iPods were the latest and greatest. I can't remember if they took out an ad in the paper or if they sent letters to local seniors. But it was that much harder for me to take them seriously after that.
I stopped taking them seriously when I got my acceptance and scholarship letter from them...and I never applied to go there.
VMI? Holy blowout.
Agreed, that was the biggest surprise on here. VMI football is SO bad. I know there's the historical rivalry/connection between the schools, but we really should not be playing them in football or basketball.
Ehh so long as we continue to play FCS teams Ill be ok, SCAR still play The Citadel too!
In the end they are still our second most played opponent behind only UVA.
Meh Tech is going to play FCS teams why not a local one?
I mean I understand from that perspective, but they haven't had a winning season in nearly 40 years. I can understand playing JMU/Richmond/W&M, but man, VMI? Next-door neighbor D3 W&L football would probably beat them.
But we already play da hoo's every thanksgiving week...
Is there really difference between playing a good FCS program and a bad FCS program? Nationally they are pretty much all viewed in the same light, when they play P5 team. Throw in the historical connection and I don't have a problem with it. Honestly they could probably use the money more than W&M or Furman.
I think nationally NDSU is respected because they have beat the last 6 FBS opponents they have played, with 5 of the 6 wins coming against P5 teams. But on the whole I agree that most FCS schools are viewed in the same light.
As a VMI grad who sat through way to many of our football games I can vouch for this. Tech will have a legit shot at hitting triple digits that game. I've watched much lesser teams hit the 60's and 70's
Funny you should mention that, as I read this article in my Facebook feed today.
Perhaps this will stop us old bastards from constantly bringing up the 81 "coldest game ever" debacle
Playing at Liberty? The school who just hired the AD who allowed Baylor to become Rape City USA?
Fuck that
Looks like ODU is the new ECU
I'd rather play an in state G5 team than out of state.
Especially in NC, we already have at least one game a year there anyway
No Tech doesn't not since schedule realignment.
We might not be playing a North Carolina opponent, but pending any future NC legislation, we should have at least one game every year in early December played in the state.
I agree with that to a certain extent, but I'd rather take Option c and mix things up rather then play the same in-state OOC team every. single. year.
Yep. Surprised they would go this route again. Hopefully things will change before then. The ACC should go to a nine game schedule.
Liberty?
That's about as nice as I can be about that.
Fuck. That
Woooooooow I've got to say I'm extremely disappointed in this. Games against Liberty is bad enough. Games in Lynchburg? Guess the money I'm saving up will go to TKPC instead of Hokie Club.
Can you imagine the tailgates at Liberty? Woowee, talk about a hoot and a holler.
My entire goal will be to get thrown off that campus.
Shouldn't be difficult.
One drink.
When we get thrown off their campus, we'll just go down the street to Macado's and continue drinking.
Go to Fifth and Federal downtown. Bourbon restaurant, or El Jefe, bootleggers or a bdubs across the tracks from the stadium.
LU maybe a sober college but lynchburg is quickly turning into a drinkers town.
I live I lynchburg and I'm a graduate from LU. Honestly, not happy about this. Haven't been back on campus 1) the ad hire 2) constant construction work.
Need a place to drink, I gotcha
I stay downtown during the weeks in one of the lofts and let me tell you, the circuit you can make down there will leave you stumbling. Gonna add Waterstone to your list as they have a pretty good draft list.
Oh and Waterdog s oyster bar!
I work downtown. Water Dog is my jam. We're in there a lot for be.......errrrrr lunch...
Waterdog's is awesome. They have great oysters, grilled cheese, drinks, beer and outdoor patio. Waterstone has some damn good pizza also. El Jefes tacos and drinks are great too. Downtown lynchburg is becoming a great food and drinking town.
Also I can't remember on what day exactly, but Robin Alexander's has a killer happy hour deal on craft beer once a week.
I drive past RA every day and it seems like they have a good happy hour for something every day. Haven't made it in there yet though.
They have pretty good food as well. The craft beer special is called Tap-Out Tuesday. They select more than a few craft beers and make it extremely cheap (no more than a couple bucks) until the kegs are gone.
The portrait behind the bar in El Jefe makes me crack up every time I see it.
And yes, downtown Lynchburg has several good spots for drinks.
Great photo! If you want to go 15 mins down 221, Apocalypse Ale micro brewery is in Forest Virginia.
I live in Forest. Let me know if you want to grab a beer.
So do I, near popular forest
el jefe you say?
I tailgated at the VHSL games two years in a row there. No one said a word.
I guess the athletic department decided the dump truck of money that Liberty will give us to play there will offset the drop in Hokie Club membership. At least I hope that's the case. Otherwise they just made a really uninformed decision if they thought this wouldn't cause a backlash and hit them in the wallet.
That drive for 25 just got a lot harder.
Wow, we turned on Whit fast, didn't we?
Who is starting the petition?
Reading about those strength of schedule pancake games

Playing two road football games at Liberty over the next 13 years is enough to no longer financially support VT athletics as a whole? I agree Liberty isn't deserving, just seems harsh.
A) Liberty needs to be removed from every schedule of every sport until the AD is fired. B) Games at Liberty which brings no fan distance reason (ECU, ODU) or recruting help are beyond stupid. I will remain a member of the Hokie Club until the year those games are played.
Taking bets on whether or not Liberty's athletic department will be deep enough into their inevitable scandal to fire McCaw by 2022.
Oh, they absolutely will be. Whit's obviously playing the long game here, banking on the major scumbags being fired in the next 5 years.
Maybe I'm the only one, but I think that's dumb to stop giving to your school because we're playing at Liberty two years.
Money talks.
I think I know what the next VT related public outrage petition might entail.
Seriously though, this was a bad call.
Like the BYU pickup though.
Barf.
Hopefully there's no buy out.
Fuck Liberty.
But justice for all.
Going out west and playing new teams (BYU) to change things up is pretty awesome and I actually don't mind occasionally playing a game against VMI, just out of the historical factor. Like someone said earlier, ODU is becoming our new East Carolina and holy hell, is that scheduling with Liberty atrocious.
And Whit was on such a roll for good decisions....
I know this doesn't go with the direction of the thread, but I'm hoping I can go to that Camp Randall game. Always love the environment when watching the badgers on TV.
Amen. Their rendition of Jump Around is, dare I say it, almost the coolest jumping crowd in sports. The 2011 or 2012 game against Nebraska (they were up like 42-10 going into the 4th), it looked absolutely insane.
One of my favorite college football videos, up by that much and that place was still packed.
I wouldn't hold my breath. How many times have they moved this home and home back, now?
Yep my brother lives in Madison and knows enough people with UW ties that he has promised some good seats. So, I've had the game circled since before I graduated. I think it was first scheduled for 07 or 08. Its been pushed back at least 3 times now. I'll believe its happening when they start selling tickets for it.
We were originally supposed to play at Wisconsin in 2008 (and Blacksburg in 2009). The game at Madison almost got moved up to 2006 when Ohio asked out of our 2006 road game (we had a 2 for 1 with them but we whipped them so bad in 2005 in Lane, Solich didn't see a point in playing the other 2 games), but the move up to 2006 fell through. Then Barry Alvarez retired and the 2008/2009 series was cancelled. Then a new series was setup for 2016 (Blacksburg)/2017 (Madison). Then Wisconsin scheduled a neutral site game vs LSU at Lambeau in 2016, so the series got bumped back to 2019 (Madison)/2020 (Blacksburg). Then the ACC setup the Notre Dame rotation which gave us a road game in South Bend in 2019, leaving us only 5 home games that season. So that pushed the Wisconsin series to 2024 (Madison)/2025 (Blacksburg).
Seeing as we are still 7 years out from the first game in that series ... not holding my breath either. And hey, we managed to reschedule a game this season (WVU) after they already started selling tickets, so at this point I'll believe it when the ball is kicked off ...
Randall and the Big House will be amazing. We are doing a great job of touring the best of the Big 10
Well, touring the Big Ten. Not sure if Rutgers counts as the best.
Hey, by 2025 we'll have played Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin. Those are some serious CFB bucket list opportunities.
Yes, someone has been doing some great work there. I'm very happy with that. (One home and home series in a row with Maryland would probably have been enough)
They can mix in some more SEC as well, if they want.
At the very least I appreciate the fact those games are getting some new teams on our schedule that we don't play much. I'd rather watch us play Rutgers than watch us play ODU or ECU for 12 seasons in a row.
Whisky will find yet another reason to delay the series.
First reaction: dafuq?
Second reaction: This has to be about money. Interesting article here about paying for small schools to come in for games--e.g., last year, Iowa paid Miami OH $1M to come in for a game, Bama paid WKU $1.3M.
I assume that playing at Liberty means we don't pay them a dime for that game? That's the only way this makes any sense to me. Anyone have insight on this?
Usually, in home and away agreement games (they come to us and then we go to them or vice versa), there is no money involved. Which is why we pay Furman, W&M, JMU, etc. because we don't visit their stadiums.
I'm sincerely hoping we are not paying any money to Liberty for this series.
because we essentially get two games for the price of one? Assuming we'd only be able to schedule a team with equal or less appeal (say, directional Michigan, for instance) and would have to pay twice as much to fill both dates, why is this a bad idea? It's not like we scheduled home and homes with them to repeat for the foreseeable future.
I mean, I'm not a big fan of anything LU, but I'm in the camp that thinks that signing a contract in blood with ECU and ODU is the more egregious scheduling sin.
I'm trying to wrap my head around this deal.
We added a 3-and-2 deal. Is the $500K just a one time payout in lieu of a third Lynchburg trip?
The home team always pays a guarantee to host an out of conference game. We are paying Liberty $500K for each game in Lane and Liberty is paying us $250K for each game at their place. So for the 5 games we added, we will pay them a net $1M ($1.5M - $500K).
For the ODU series, the guarantee is $250K for each game, which nets to zero for the 6 games added.
In 2022, is NC State just automatically advancing to the ACCCG?
One of our ACC games is the first weekend on September. We don't know who the opponent is, but it is one of the 8 teams listed further down. They just removed the ACC Championship block.
That was my second thought, right after assuming the full weekly schedule had been set for every game for through the 2028 season. I guess they really want to point out that we open against an ACC opponent that year.
Other than giving me a friendly reminder what each team's logo is, that table is useless. IMO, the full schedule is easier to read.
Maybe Saban was on to something after all, Eh?
Why would we want to go to these games?
I was avid about only playing P5s yesterday, but holy shit I couldn't have predicted just how bad the scheduling would be
So, we didn't add any ECU games, that's a plus.
I've been saying for years that we should play VMI for Corps Homecoming. Plus, if we're going to play an FCS team, it might as well be in state. Interestingly enough, it's the only FCS team that has been added to the schedule.
Who wants to make bets that the Wisconsin series gets pushed again? I'm a little fuzzy on the timeline, I can't remember if it was just announced while I was at Tech, or actually scheduled to be played in that timeframe (2002-2005). If they keep it up,
Interesting that we get BYU at home first. Typically, VT is the second home in a home-and-home deal.
It's like we made a deal with the devil. To exorcise ECU from the schedule we have to play at Liberty.
So are we just gonna ignore the fact that we play Penn State and Michigan back to back in 2020?
Don't interrupt our garment rending.
Yeah that's gonna be a tough out, plus ECU the week after??
then in 2021 the OOC schedule is Michigan, The cousins and ND. That could be one brutal OOC lineup. My guess is one game in each of those years gets moved. We know the ND game is pretty much locked up so my guess is both Michigan games are moved.
This ODU series is a terrible idea. They have more to gain off of this than we do. The last thing we want to do is give a program in the middle of the hotbed of talent we're trying to secure a lifeline. One win over us during that time would be a significant boost to their program, while harming us at the same time.
A couple games here and there, no problem. A rotating home and home that plays 10 games in 12 years? We're just setting ourselves up as the ones who built their program.
It's worse. It's 13 in 15 years.
I would have at least rotated them with ECU.
You know, for variety.
I just don't get it. We are replacing ECU with a different ECU... But this time this one does far more harm to the VT program with a win than ECU ever could. 13 games in 15 years, you have to figure they'll win at least 2 or 3, but those 2 or 3 are going to be program changing wins for them, right in the heart of the 757, which we're going to be trying to heavily recruit.
I just don't get it.
I get it. Putting a game into one of the hearts of Hokie alums and recruiting hotbed.
Fine, schedule 2 home and homes, so we play 4 times in 12 years. But an annual matchup? Hell fucking no. We should have learned this damn lesson with ECU. Its a terrible idea to get into an annual series where your opponent cares more about the matchup than you do. You're setting yourself up to be upset numerous times.
Except Greenville, NC doesn't exactly have the same alumni base as the 757, so there is a little more reason for VT to care about the matchup. I think the possibility of a somewhat competitive in-state rival and greater visibility for potential 757 recruits far outweighs the risk of an upset.
Note: I fully expect to beat ODU every year, I just think the game will be closer than the thorough stomping that LOLUVA will receive.
Sorry to bring this up, but we also planned to beat JMU every year.
And JMU is FCS.
13 games vs ODU ... Do you guys realize how hard it is to beat *any* FBS opponent 13 times in a row? Only a really terrible program could possibly lose that many straight games to the same team.
I'm picking up what you're putting down
#1 I'm sick of playing garbage OOC opponents more frequently than teams in our own conference. There are plenty of garbage OOC opponents that we could rotate through a nice variety of them. It was lame with ECU and now it's lame with ODU and Liberty. Hell we play Notre Dame more frequently than FSU, Clemson, NC State, Louisville, Wake Forest and Syracuse. Time for a 9 or 10 game conference schedule.
As for playing ODU 13 times over 15 years? WTF! How about schedule someone that we're actually rivals with, and is someone at roughly our level - like WVU, to a long term deal like that? A school that won't ruin our rep in-state if we lose to them? A game that would be compelling every year instead of a snoozefest / nightmare game. GARBAGE!
Oh and I almost forgot, why the hell are we playing Liberty? They're right down the road and add nothing geographically as far as notoriety / name recognition / recruiting side trips. They're a scrub team with a terrible human being running their athletic dept. This is the worst thing about this schedule, even worse than infinite games against ODU, complete and absolute garbage.
F*CK THIS SCHEDULE
Leg just for sheer unadulterated rage.
Ask yourselves, which game would Whit drop if we went to a 9 game ACC schedule? FCS/Liberty/ECU/ODU or PennState/Michigan...yeah. I'd schedule a cheap out too, we're going to 9 game soon, the league is spread too far out to get a good measure of the competition, and it would bring more money to the ACC Network, Whit just looks to be arranging things to drop some ODU games and the horrible Liberty games when it happens.
Well they are already there. So we could either ignore them or crush their soul in front of all the 757 recruits. If we anticipate the what if when we lose, then we have lost already.
I'm more displeased with playing ODU every year than playing at Liberty twice. I don't really give a shit about the Liberty games but I can tell I'm in the minority there. Yes, fuck Liberty, but I just won't attend those games and stay home to watch us beat their ass on tv. It won't be a factor in how much I do or don't donate.
It absolutely will not. We do not compete with ODU for recruits. And if we are competing with them for recruits, we will have done a lot more wrong than schedule them
This x100. Until ODU gets into a P5, they will always be a step below.
We don't compete with ODU for top tier recruits but with the restart and rise of their program, guys that would've walked been preferred walk-ons at Tech 10 years ago are now going there on scholarship. That impact is not obvious most of the time, but it can show up in things like special teams which use a lot more back-ups and thus depend a lot more on your depth.
I hate most of this.
AT LIBERTY? Playing ODU every damn year? C'mon son.
757 and a team thats not be a p5 but a good record at the end of the year sounds good to me
A few games here and there.
I completely understand the recruiting aspect and benefits. But essentially it's just another ECU... lord forbid we drop one.
Arizona and BYU in 2030? That's going to be, erm, interesting.
I like the VMI addition, due to VTCC-VMI past rivalry and all. Talking to some of the older alumni they had some crazy stories about playing VMI.
As far as Liberty, maybe Whit just wants to crush them on the field to make a statement? I want some absurdly high scoring games vs LU, VMI, and ODU.
On a related note, apparently the ACC is limiting members to one FCS game per year, and apparently only in the first week of the season. It looks like we are the one that let the cat out of the bag.
Per Yahoo
I like that rule.
It prevents teams from using an FCS opponent as essentially a bye week.
Cough cough Alabama every year before the Iron Bowl.
Cough almost every SEC school that same week Cough
I don't like the ACC handicapping the ACC teams that have a SEC rivalry game., seems like Kentucky, USCe, Florida and Vanderbilt could (continue to) schedule cupcake teams the week ahead of rivalry week
It could be the case, but seems the author at yahoo is jumping to conclusions there.
Emphasis mine.
Also should note the ACC likes to have a couple big games week 1. I doubt they are going handicap the teams with marquee match ups week 1. I'm guessing week 2 is allowed as well. The question is whether week 11-12 are allowed like we see in the SEC.
NC State's representative must have been in the can when they voted on that one.
Respectfully, donations are not going to slow down significantly due to the scheduling mentioned. Everyone is free to have their opinion of Liberty, VMI, etc but, honestly, it doesn't matter. Veto the game if you don't want to watch it. Easy as that. Complaining on a message board is pointless.
Welcome to the internet sir, enjoy your time here.
Actually, I stop by this site a lot. Not quite as much as you....but I don't think Joe has as much to say here as you do. Not sure how you have so much time to work, raise all those kids and post thousands of times each week.
I think HF's comment was supposed to point to the fact that the internet is full of people making exaggerated statements and going all chicken little over things that, in the end, aren't a big deal. So don't be surprised if it happens here, too.
You do realize that a big part of being a fireman is waiting for something to catch on fire, right?
...so we should set some things on fire?
You mean like Liberty?
That was sarcasm. /s
No it wasn't.
I like you.
Note of order. I have left my job to focus on my college degree and the kids. Which gives me time as someone said "to post thousands of times a week on here".
Do we need to get you some help???
For which part, all the kids or going back to college in my thirties?
For the incessant posting..duh.
An intervention for a good thing? I'm confused do you want to help me post more?
I believe the phrase you're looking for is

But why would anyone want to quit TKP.
I don't wanna quit. I want you to quit so I can get more turkey legs than you.
I'm just trying to stay within 50,000 of Guitar.
Maybe we disagree with your opinion so everyone should drop out. If someone doesn't agree with your decision that's in essence what you're advocating.
Wait, you left your job as a fireman to focus on your degree and the kids, and you have more time to post?
I suck at the maths, but something doesn't add up.
A 24-48 hour shift at the firehouse keeps me from taking or picking kids up from school, preschool, summer camps, gymnastics. It also meant with my wife's call schedule that we didn't always get to both go to their events. Add in time away from work was often spent either going to my classes or online homework and it got to be too much. Now I get to go to kids events more, take them and pick them up everyday from school or preschool. Etc. then while they are doing their actives I do my schoolwork interspaced with plenty of TKP time.
Wait...you mean you aren't there to put out fires anymore?
You know he's sitting there watching Backdraft 4 times a day. Probably has the whole movie memorized.
Jim Weaver, Is that you?
PSU and Mich in the same year?! 2020 is gonna be lit AF.
Back to back, no less!
Still, pretty cool.
Don't dismiss 2021 or 2025. Michigan and WVU in back-to-back weeks, plus Notre Dame, and Penn State/Wisconsin in back-to-back weeks.
2025 is the real party... Looks like that the last year we play ECU!!!!
And then 2023 non-conference schedule is *wet fart noise* - ODU, Purdue, @Rutgers, and @ECU. At least we're playing FSU at home that year.
Maybe by that time Purdue will have turn...
I can't take that seriously. That's a good season to stomp everybody and then embarrass ourselves in the playoff, no?
I dunno, man. Purdue is due for another major bowl game...
... you know what, I can't make it believable either.
2020 is going to be a doozy. 11 FBS teams and two P5 noncons. whew.
It's actually 12 FBS teams.
No, he was right. We have our annual cupcake game after Thanksgiving.
Glad someone got it haha.
Yeah...sometimes it's hard to tell if someone's making the UVA joke, or hasn't realized that Liberty is transitioning to FBS.
Isn't that game the FLS game?
Shit man congrats to UVA then!
Let's just drop Maryland in 2026 and add BYU, then we can piss of Mormons as well as Catholics and Baptists when we beat their schools
I'm just as happy pissing off the Marylanders, regardless of religion or creed.
I hope they show up dressed in their clown suits, with their bright red multicolor hats and bright yellow shoes.
Don't you mean 2019? We are playing BYU in 2026, but in 2019 we're playing Notre Dame and Wake Forest but not BYU (or Maryland for that matter).
A few possible reasons....1) We want to play the second-best team in the state every year to show we own the state. 2) Whit may also be sensing that the direction of that program is positive and that a game versus them in 10 years may look different and would like to play them. 3) Convenient for alums.
As a Lynchburg resident, I'm just happy to have another reason to tell LU folks that they don't belong...
Enjoy this years Clemson game while it lasts.... yeesh
We'll just have to catch them at the ACC Championship game.
So what's the over-under on how many times the ACC or ESPN replace our opening opponents with a bigger matchup between 2019 and 2027?
Florida State opening against the national champs at Lane will be a hoot and a half
next yearin 2023, though. We play at FSU next year.
Fixed!
I don't get all the hate for liberty. Aren't they just the BYU/ND for evangelicals?
/s
Fuck Liberty, fuck their rApe Director, and fuck playing a 2 for 1 with a FCS school who used money and the threat of lawsuits to slime their way into FBS as an independent.
Fuck Liberty and Rape Director sound like some kind of fucked up metal band names
First thing I noticed, 2026, no ECU

Yet.
You could trouble me for a warm glass of shut the hell up
That's my favorite hand gesture. I probably do that at my dogs 3 times a week.

Another interesting tidbit from the article:
That's 500,000 too much for Liberty. Seriously, Eff Liberty Athletics
Huzzah! They finally renewed the VT/VMI rivalry. Hope all those old timers that wanted this have made plans to rise from their graves to watch it
WHERE'S YOUR CANNON! WHERE'S YOUR CANNON!
got your cannon right here, suckas
SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!

Our strength of schedule in 2019 is gonna be abysmal. But we make up for it with 2021.
My God what a bunch of whiners! Playing at Liberty and at ODU is as much about VT fans in other parts of the state as it is the schools themselves. Threatening to stop supporting the entire school athletic dept over a couple of games? That's absolutely childish. Sometimes you don't get everything you want in life deal with it.
It's about supporting a school with money that hired an AD who supported and covered up sexual assaults and other crimes. What person living near Liberty can get to that game but can't get to Blacksburg?
I'm located about 2 hours away from both Liberty and ODU. VT is 3 and a half hours away.
It's a lot easier to do a day trip to one of those places than to Blacksburg.
People who live closer to Liberty and can pony up $35 or whatever they charge vs driving to VT and the game is sold out. Maybe a family with several kids? Trust me, the game will sell out and there will be tons of VT fans
And with a stadium capacity around 20,000, several of y'all will be able to watch the Hokies play.
The same as ODU. Wake is 31500. Wallace Wade is 40000. BC? Liberty may renovate. It's not like VT plays in front of 90,000 crowds every week
ODU is contractually obligated to expand to get VT to play there.
C'mon now. We all know Liberty is gonna expand. Do they need it? Absolutely not. But they'll do it because they can
^^^^^This! And some other more personal reasons but mostly this
Edit: This is meant to be in support of Fireman
All major organizations or corporations have SOME sort of business practice, or holding, do you boycott Apple for working conditions in China/Thailand? Are you going to boycott VT for Vick's dogfighting and HOF induction? It's impossible to agree with 100% of everything all the time
So bottom line are you actually going to leave the Hokie Club because of a game at Liberty? If that's the case please let me know as I will boycott TKP to protest your protest against VT for a business decision to play an FBS opponent at a reduced price. So please answer when this occurs
This is cute. You think that you can somehow leverage your continued participation in this forum to influence another member to continue paying to support a decision he fundamentally disagrees with. Fireman has put his money where his mouth was, both in support of Hokie Athletics, and in financially supporting the website dedicated to discussing it. I'd hazard a guess that he's invested to the point where your little threat here will not only not dissuade him from his intended course of action, but may further embolden him, just on the off chance that you follow through.
Your not supporting the website now financial so what would your boycott do? So yes in 2021 if Liberty still has Ian McCaw AD I will be dropping my Hokie Club membership if Tech is playing a game AT Liberty.
Yes, but will you boycott TKP if joe covers the games?
No, boycotting a news or reporting organization for reporting on something happening even if a person doesn't like that event is pointless. They are a messenger not the cause of said action. But without more people joining no the Key Players Club we might not have TKP in 2021.
If there is no Hokie Club, there is no TKP.
Truth is that VT is saving something like a million dollars by booking Liberty versus other comparable teams plus its an away game that is a short bus drive away, saving additional money. I don't think there will truly be a noticeable drop in support but even if it is, Whit is probably still money ahead.
Different question, would you be ok if we were only playing them in Lane regardless of AD?
Ok no, accepting maybe for already contracted games. My personal view is that as long as he is AD Tech should remove any and all scheduled events with Liberty that that can contractual do so and schedule no more. Ian McCaw as AD after his time at Baylor means an environment that isn't safe for students, fans or athletes could easily exist at Liberty.
What is everyone worried about? When we schedule someone better, Liberty will be an easy buyout.
If there's ever been an easier OOC schedule than 2019 this century, I don't recall it.
The wildcard in calling 2019 easy is Notre Dame.
If they're a better than average team, then 2019 could be very similar to 2017 or 2008 (ECU, Furman, WKU, Nebraska).
If they're really good, then maybe the schedule could be comparable to 2015 (OSU, Furman, Purdue, ECU).
If they're mediocre or worse, then the schedule could be similar to 2011 with App State (our last 60+ point game under Beamer), Arkansas State, @ECU, and @Marshall or 2006 with Northeastern, Cincinnati, Southern Miss, and Kent State.
This guy remembers schedules
Or the internet does /s
To be fair, I'm sure this season was set up when Eastern Carolina was competitive and Notre Dame didn't suck. In that light, it's your standard FCS, lower G5, up and coming G5 and competitive P5 slate.
So it looks like we're boycotting the SEC? All I see up there is a bunch of ACC, FCS, ECU, and Big Ten. This kinda sucks. Sure PSU/Michigan will be cool. Maybe PSU/Wisconsin too. But Purdue/Rutgers? And no SEC, Big 12, or PAC 12? C'mon man
I'm not sure we have anything to do with the SEC part of that. It seems to me that all SEC teams refuse to schedule home and homes with other P5s because they have such a vigorous conference schedule playing the likes of Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Missouri all year.
That's sort of the point I was getting at in the Saban post. Alabama hasn't done a home-and-home out of conference since 2011. We know that the Gators haven't left the state for a true road OOC game since 1990-ish.
I don't mind not having a home-and-home but I sure would like to have Chik-Fil-A Kickoff Classic-style games somewhere in the future. Playing at a neutral site against a major program from a variety of major conferences is just a great game to play (and watch).
I'm pretty sure we'll get one of those at some point, and this schedule will get completely moved around. I mean, we did the CFA kickoff in 2009 and 2013, but then we're not going to get invited until 2029 at the earliest?
Yeah that's why I don't fret too much about the Liberty scheduling. We're like recruits early in the cycle: Lock in your best offer so far, then bail when you get a better one.
Only because the chart cuts off in 2028. We have the Arizona series in 2029-2030. And I know it's easy to forget that WVU is Big 12.
But a big part of not playing the Pac-12 (and to a lesser extent the Big 12) is probably the travel costs. Although, UVA likes to schedule Pac-12 teams to take them behind the woodshed.
I will be honest, I am not a fan of a long term deal with any school outsides of the conference. I am not excited by having to play, liberty, ECU, ODU, etc every year. Playing every year should be reserved for rivals or conference opponents.
Mook Hype
Here is a diversion!
That was refreshing

UVa just scheduled 3 more football games vs. Liberty. Seriously, it was inevitable.

So if UVA has games scheduled against ODU, then there's a chance that we could have a season with a "state championship".
UVA is allowed to participate in championships?
How else could they get Virginia D1 Championship Participation Trophies? Or will they be fourth place trophies?
Like it or not, the state championship is the VT-UVa game.
Well, unless Liberty and ODU start beating UVa.
I mean Richmond already beat them last year, soooo....
you have no idea how hard I'm rooting for W&M to win their opener.
Need to get aTm on there
