2017 Preseason Camp Day 4: Instagram and Snapchat Review

Jalen Holston was fielding punts during warm ups.

It could just be a thing, but groups of three are working the bags with the safety group. Edmunds, Floyd, and Newsome are working the bags with one group. Mook is with the back up safeties (Deablo and Ladler.) Hunter is with Ishmiel Seisay and I didn't see a 3rd guy. Edmunds and Floyd are dancing a bit after they took their rep. It was interesting groupings, but again, it was just a sled drill.

Offensive line is working on combo blocking (setting angles with a double team and then peeling off to a backer at the second level.) Young guys are mixing with veterans, with Conner Kish getting a rep next to Eric Gallo, and Austin Cannon working with Yosh Nijman.

We get two reps of the defensive line top group hitting the sled. Big Tim is much quicker off the ball today. Mihota was also quick off the snap and is still working at defensive end.

I don't know if he will play or how he is doing against coverage. But, Hezekiah Grimsley is a guy who jumps out a bit in his clips. He is long, and his feet look much quicker in terms of getting in and out of cuts than he looked on film. He gets good extension with his hands and attacks the ball. He and Phillips are favorites of the guys filming. Patterson was uncovered in a drill and caught a ball that was a bit high and behind him.

And finally some one on one work! Khalil Pimpleton beat Terrell Edmunds. At first it looks like a sluggo and then he breaks to the sideline. Pimpleton looks like he is going to be a handful for true safeties to cover in the slot. This is important because I think the Hokies have a match up advantage against West Virginia's hybrid big safeties (their best returning player is 220 and plays like a mix of a rover and a backer) in the slot. Small and quick could give him fits.

Ray Minor worked against Tyrell Smith in a pass protection drill. Much like in the spring, Minor shows great explosion off the ball and gets Nijman off balance. But, also like in the spring, Minor attempts a spin move back to the inside and is a bit slow in the transition. Smith recovers. I give the rep to Minor as Smith overset and was off balance. But, if he wants to get into the rotation, he has to make that transition quicker.

Wyatt Teller goes against Tim Settle in the second clip. Settle punches Teller hard and turns his right shoulder. Teller gets back to square and basically squeezes Settle into submission. It looks like Teller may have gotten away with a bit of a hold with the right arm on Settle's left shoulder pad because Settle couldn't get loose after the initial punch.

We also get Teller against an unknown opponent. (I can't see the number.) The defender throws his hands several times violently. Teller stays square and doesn't get his hands knocked off. One habit that he needs to watch is that his right arm has a tendency to get wide and hook back to the middle when a defender attacks his right shoulder. If he lands outside the shoulders, technically that can be called holding. Also, a smart defender will rip hard underneath his right arm, which at least would leave the appearance of Teller hooking the pass rusher around the shoulders and drawing a flag. Teller's feet look really good and nobody can out-muscle him.

Cool to see the whole team doing fight song practice also.

Question who is wearing the blue jerseys? They finally got the QB's out of yellow and gave them Hokie Orange which is nice to see.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

That is usually a non contact jersey. I have no idea who the player was.

Ah, thanks mate. I figured it was some futuristic shit that I had to sign up for.

Hezekiah Grimsley needs entrance music.

I'm thinking something between The Taker and Bray Wyatt.

He comes out, then everything goes black, and Metallica starts in.

Oh, for fucks sake Pete.

Sounds like Grimsley is better than thought? And Pimpleton/Carroll give us some good slot receivers. I think Phillips, Carroll, Murphy, Kumah, Patterson, Denmark, Pimpleton, and Grimsley will give us 8 receivers. They all should be able to contribute and play and the coaches said 8 is what they prefer =) This would allow Savoy to redshirt unless he can contribute too.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I think Pimpleton and Savoy will both be very good Hokies. Again, as true freshmen, you can't fairly expect them to set the world on fire. But, if they can be productive role players in year 1 with Carroll, there is no reason not to expect them to be really good as upper classmen. Both guys are getting separation, and Edmunds has proven to be a very solid cover guy (hopefully he didn't get too big at 220) and Pimpleton turned him inside out.

I keep forgetting about James Clark, so we def. should have 8 or 9 guys I feel like easily.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I'd like to see a sharper cut by Pimp especially at his size. Definitely teachable

Behind Settle and Walker, who is in the 2 deep at DT out of Fullwood, Burke, Taylor, and Hewitt? Is Sobczak going to return? Is Porcher going to be a DT or DE? If Porcher is a DT will he and Glaze redshirt this year or are they as good as the others to compete now? I feel like the potential is there at DT to leave Mihota at DE and then allow Garbutt and Proctor to redshirt because Hill, Mihota, Gaines, Minor, Belmar, and Debose give us 6 solid DE's if Debose is ready.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Bud said that Mihota could move inside if needed. If that happens, it means Belmar, Gaines, and Debose are looking good. Right now, I assume that Fullwood (who is much bigger) and Hewitt are the next two. There is nothing on the film to indicate if that is a good or bad thing.

I have not seen Porcher on film yet, so it would be unfair to make that conclusion. Long term he is a DT.

I'm with you French! Hezzy G has always been a guy I thought was better than his rankings show. He has good size and good feet as well as technique. Reminds me a bit of Cam Phillips. I think he will be solid inside and outside.

Hokie Love!
