Apologize for the clickbait.
What are the odd we get College Gameday and a Primetime kickoff slot for the Clemson game? The only other game that they might consider is Georgia-Tennessee at Rocky Top. I know that this game would have 2 higher ranked teams in it. Any chance they DON"T come to Blacksburg? Would be a great atmosphere.
Officially announced. Gameday in Blacksburg.

Rumor has it (sigh... fine...)
a certain programming network that focuses on entertainment and sports has booked a block of rooms from around the 28th to October 1st at the Inn at Virginia Tech.
(I had just posted this to the other GameDay thread... more appropriate here)
that probably just means we are on the shortlist, I'd imagine they have rooms booked at several possible locations
Yup. If either team loses this week or next those rooms will be cancelled.
Couldn't this just be for the crew that will broadcast the game?
We better check the flight tracker.
Get out of here with your logic sir!
How the hell did they get rooms at the inn? Every hotel in the area has been booked for months.
Because E.S.P.N.
They sleep on that bus! Double punk bunk!
I'd imagine if VT, Clemson, UT, and UGA are all undefeated, it would be a tossup between Blacksburg and Knoxville. In that scenario I'd assume the Tech-Clemson matchup would be more of a draw. Clemson would likely still be top 4 in the AP poll at that point.
But what the hell do I know, they're going to NYC next weekend.
Nothing guarantees a night game though. Very well could end up being a 3:30 ABC game even with Gameday there.
UT is 3-6 in games when game day visits Knoxville. Hokies are 4-1. Let's hope they choose Blacksburg.
You'd think that they might give Blacksburg the edge there, with the GameDay history there, Corso's 300th headgear, and the reigning undefeated national champions (Louisville is gonna be outclassed by Clemson this weekend, IMO).
That, and I'm betting Tennessee falls to Florida this weekend in the sloppiest 13-6 game you've ever seen (defensive TD for Florida is the only TD of the game).
Tennessee vs Georgia is on CBS that week
Virginia Tech vs Clemson is on ESPN that week
ESPN is not in the business of advertising for their competition when they can avoid it. If it comes down to that, it'll be in Blacksburg if for no other reason than supporting the mothership.
As far as I'm concerned Georgia without Eason isn't that compelling a team to watch.
Did Eason play against Noter* Dame?
* - this spelling intentional
Nope, still Jake Fromm.
Well, where's he from?
State Farm
Nick Chubb and Sony Michel take umbrage at that statement.
For his first start ever, Fromm played really well. I think he's going to have a couple big games before Eason comes back and the fans are going to want him to stay the starter
I am also pretty positive TN will lose to FL this weekend. Then that game will most likely.
On like a last second 60+ yard Hail Mary... or something like that
We're 6-3 when Gameday visits Knoxville, so either way, we're in good shape.
If UCLA beats Stanford and Colorado upsets Washington at home, I could see Colorado playing at UCLA for Gameday.... Thoughts?
Not enough hype for long enough. Too much logistics and such, so I don't see them making a snap decision.
lets win at ECU...one game at a time
This is that same "Miami better be ready" crap from last year after the UNC game.
The game is gonna lose a lot of hype if we can't focus on the team we play this week.
YEP!! Because our lack of focus on this board will for sure impact our teams performance at ECU. It's science.
I'm not in the locker room, I can speculate on the National Title if I want. If they players check TKP for inspiration, we are doing it wrong.
If we're both undefeated they'll come to VT, but that ODU game terrifies me. That's the classic trap game, the kind of game we've lost a few times
Agreed, it will be interesting to see how ODU does against UNC this weekend. That has to be the biggest opponent they have had in Norfolk so far and would be a nice win for them.
I'm much more scared for ECew than I am ODU. Away game against those stupid purple pirates who now have Sirk as their QB...yeah not excited about this at all. Fuck ECU and Pat Narduzzi.
Ok...yup. Ya got me.
The fuck
So... Isn't this around time when the Metallica rumors start popping up?
I dunno, but there's this guy on this message board that has #sauces on hotels, and he started asking about Metallica, which I think is a hint that he knows something so I'm going to assume he does and METALLICA HYPE THRUSTERS ENGAGED
knows Metallicais actually in Metallica.
FTFY
I know, right!
....
Wait...
Are you starting one? I think you should start one.
I heard Metallica buses have already been spotted in Blacksburg.
....y-yes.. weeks early. Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger. I heard it from Alum
Bud's already been sighted boarding a plane to that school that just fired their head coach.
That's just because he is hungry and wants to feast on the Carnage.
I heard Bud's on a bus to a school that just demoted their DC.
Why is Bud on the bus when the rest of the team and coaches are flying? Can his look of rage not be allowed past TSA?
To help intensify his anger. Not a nice team bus....a Greyhound
And he's right beside the bathroom.
Nice
Bud is upfront with his earbuds listening to Slayer.
Never said I had good #sauces.
They can always opt to bring Gameday to, say, Chicago. You know, like they're in NYC today.
They're in Louisville today.
Times Square is next week.
That Hail Mary loss to Florida by Tennessee certainly helps
I mentioned it in the game thread, and I tweeted about it, but Tennessee losing almost guarantees us getting Gameday.
If both Georgia and Tennessee were undefeated, it was still going to be a longshot because that's the CBS game. But now, there's no way they go there. Only other game that I could see is Ole Miss-Alabama because of dat SEC bias. But honestly I would be shocked, based on how much of a dumpster fire that Mississippi program is.
After how badly Clemson is lighting up Louisville, we have to get Gameday now.
Do they return to the Clemson story line 2 weeks later though after doing a Clemson game this week? Granted I know it's at Louisville but I have to wonder if they wouldn't want to find a different story line for the week.
Who knows.
They did a UTjr game like 3 out of 5 weeks last season.
It'll be hard for them to turn down a top 15 matchup in Blacksburg, and I doubt they'll go for back to back irregular locations.
From last year's schedule:
September 17: #2 Florida State at #10 Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, Louisville 63β20
October 1: #3 Louisville at #5 Clemson in Clemson, South Carolina, Clemson 42β36
September 10: Virginia Tech vs. #17 Tennessee (Battle at Bristol) in Bristol, Tennessee, Tennessee 45β24
September 24: #19 Florida at #14 Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tennessee 38β28
October 8: #9 Tennessee at #8 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, Texas A&M 45β38 2OT
October 22: #6 Texas A&M at #1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Alabama 33β14
November 5: #1 Alabama at #15 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Alabama 10β0
October 29: #4 Washington at #17 Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, Washington 31β24
November 12: USC at #4 Washington in Seattle, Washington, USC 26β13
September 3: Wisconsin vs. #5 LSU in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Wisconsin 16β14
October 15: #2 Ohio State at #8 Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, Ohio State 30β23 OT
November 26: #3 Michigan at #2 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State 30β27 2OT
You'll notice that that is 12 of the 13 regular season weeks. They don't have a problem repeating teams.
Not to mention the two visits to Blacksburg in 2005.
Then, after they came to VT in week 1 of 2007, they travelled with us to LSU in week 2.
Clemson smashes Louisville. Tech smashes ECU. Tennessee loses to Florida. Blacksburg is where it all began. VT vs Clemson should feature two top 15 if not top 10 teams. Night games at Lane are the GOAT.
Take care of business against ODU, and Gameday is Comin To OUR City.
"Today...this is the epicenter...of college football." *cue nightmares*
Hey BreakzoneHokie, want to come cover my shift in Breakzone so I can go to Gameday?
Hard pass. lol I worked BZ for 3 years but finally graduated. Cool gig though just sucks if you get stuck working on gamedays. I always managed to avoid it other than 1 or 2 times.
I have somehow managed to get put on both opening gameday and the Clemson game. I'll be okay for getting to the game on the 30th, but I'll have to miss Gameday.
That sucks. There were a couple people I worked with that thankfully weren't huge into football so they didn't mind taking those shifts most of the time. At least you'll be able to watch most of it if they still allow you to have your computer behind the desk. Or you can stand at the club tables and watch on the tiny TVs lol. Assuming opening is still dead as a doorknob until after 12.
I posted my shift last week, hopefully somebody comes around and picks it up! Otherwise, I'll be on my computer. I swear to god if they set up in front of the Pylons like that have in the past, I might actually just go up.
It might be time to start groveling at someones feet haha I'm rooting for you man

Once they officially announce it is when I start begging. If I get off, look for a sign that says "I got out of work to be here"
If they set up on Alumni Mall, you should get someone to stand next to you with a sign pointing to Squires:
<=====
HE WORKS THERE
Or just be by myself with a sign that says
"I got out of work there ----->
To be here"
If you don't get your shift covered (or maybe even if you do) you should sneak off for a few minutes and stand out there with a sign saying "I'm on my lunch break"
"i quit my job for this" has a nice ring to it
Who goes to the student lounge on gamedays?
You'd be surprised.
Surprisingly, we're pretty busy during gamedays. People coming into town will walk through, families will stop to bowl or play pool, and then people will watch the game on our TV's during the game.
That's strange. Living in Columbus, the entire city shut down for games.
"During the game" is the only time on football weekends where townies can do their shopping without getting mobbed. You'd be surprised at how many Blacksburg natives hate the school.
I had to run to the mall once during a game, they had whelled TV's into the areas of the mall with couches and benches and the employees and few people in the mall were watching the game. The grocery store played the radio over the PA system.
Herbie and Fowler talking about Clemson's schedule, and potential stumbles. Herbie highlights the VT game.
WHO WANNA HOLD THE TKP FLAG AT GAMEDAY?! A TRIBUTE IS NEEDED!!
EDIT: I WAS GONNA SAY VOLUNTEER BUT THAT DIDNT SEEM RIGHT.
Please let Frank be the guest picker.
There is really no other choice here. Unless they want MV7 to do it (too controversial at the moment), or maybe if Bam Bam Kam had a private jet on hand, ditto Tyrod.
Aww you done messed up, now!
I'd love to see Dez or Kirk pick Clemson, glance at Bruce, and then quickly change their pick.
Dez: Well you know, I just have to go with my head and pick Cle....
Dez: TECH, MY GOD I'M PICKING VIRGINIA TECH
Corso: Well you know...
No disrespect to Bruce, but it might be better for the VT brand to have a player who hasn't been retired for 15 years.
This. Bruce is a legend and well respected by the current fanbase and old timers, but Michael Vick, Kam Chancellor, and Tyrod are more appealing to potential new fans and recruits
None of the NFL teams are on a bye week next weekend, so I doubt any of the current NFL players would be able to make it.
Although the Redskins play on that Monday night, and D. Hall is still hurt.
You guys are looking at this all wrong, the guest picker next week is James Hetfield.
ESPN flies the guest picker in, they do a whole thing thanking the private jet company every weekend.
....because they had to fly in Rick Pitino this past week?....
There was a shot of him getting off of an airplane.
Gotta bang your co-workers wife somewhere
Wrong scumbag Louisville coach.
Nope, Pitino's is the scumbag UL coach that slept with the equipment manager's wife and then she tried to extort him.
Bobby Petrino, the other scumbag UL coach, stepped out on his old lady with a former ALL-SEC volleyball player that he'd just hired to be a full time assistant.
O shit, I thought she was just a random strange he had, or student from rumors I've heard.
Damn, the thing I heard was that she was a waitress.
I did too, and that the deed happened on one of her restaurant's tables.
Is any coaching staff more DTF than ULs?
I suppose whatever staff Lane
Kiffin is on.
Yeah that dude straight up walked out of one of the buildings. No private jet. Frank will do the same thing, holding a giant lollipop I imagine. Maybe a milkshake.
Chocolate flavored of course
The amount of repek I would have for ESPN, if they were able to recreate this during GD
Can anyone who's good with photoshop get me a transparent background with Frank holding the milkshape from this?
I hope he walks out still grinning ear to ear and swaying with the Black Diamond Trophy, and sits that thing down right on the table with him.
Also have the Commonwealth Cup filled with a giant Dairy Club milkshake already sitting there waiting on him.
No, I got it.
Sitting there chilling with the BDT while Growley is eatin Frosty Paws out of the Commonwealth Cup
FRANK BEAMER EATING A MILKSHAKE OUT OF THE COMMONWEALTH CUP DOT GIF
He is used to short trips.
MV7 works for FOX now so I doubt they would have him on anyways considering FOX and ESPN are competing networks
I don't think it's the competing networks that would prevent Vick from being the guest picker. I think it would be his schedule, with the Sunday morning show being in LA.
Either way, I don't think he'll be the guest picker based on this tweet.
I would imagine the same issues would arise next weekend as well.
Another thing worth monitoring: game time should be announced Monday. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they put a 6 day hold on it to see what both teams do next week.
ODU is starting a 17 year old at QB and their starting RB is out for the year with a torn hamstring.
Clemson plays Boston College.
We both should be fine.
ODU is also VERY excited for this match up. I think you're right but how stupid would the ACC feel if one team lost when all they have to do is put the hold on it?
I know, and I promise we get the 6 day hold. I'm just saying I think it's very unlikely anything happens
Same, just trying to acknowledge that they're trap games for both teams.
Isn't Wiggins a former ODU coach? I doubt he lets his players sleep walk through this week. Not gonna happen.
Burden is. Fuente will have them ready to play but so will Bobby Wilder. That's the thing about VT being the top team in the state, all these teams G5 and FCS teams like ODU, JMU, UR, UVA, W&M are going to take aim at us. This is their super bowl. Same with ECU.
Yeah, they had ODU ready to play UNC this past weekend, too.
Didn't prevent them from losing by 30 at home.
Holy hell y'all like to count games as wins early don't y'all?
Same with WVU until they lose. Then they try to pretend like it didn't matter.
Seeing ODU on this stat makes me slightly nervous.
Might make you feel better to know 15 of ODU's 16 sacks came against Albany and UMASS. 7 against Albany, 8 against UMASS. Just one against UNC.
True, but I don't know what other games would be looked at for the ABC primetime game.
There are no other ACC games that really move the needle.
The SEC games can't air on ABC, so that takes out Ole Miss at Alabama and Georgia at Tennessee. One of those is probably CBS 3:30, and the other is primetime on one of the ESPNs.
Half of the Big 12 is taking the week off. Oklahoma State at Texas Tech could be a good matchup. But Fox might take that.
The Big Ten doesn't have a lot of strong games. Maybe Iowa at Michigan State or Indiana at Penn State -- but Iowa/Penn State is on ABC primetime next week.
I know I'm biased, but I still think Clemson at VT is a better option regardless of what happens next week.
Tickets purchased and AirBnB booked! Hoping for the late kick so my brother can make the drive down from Michigan.
Time to make a countdown chain like we did back in elementary school for my office.
Just over 90 minutes from now the ACC will announce kickoff times next week
Unless they 6 day option us, in which case, I would be very bitter.
That would be the Bullshit of all Bullshit, if they go for the 6 day option. There is no other notable matchups that day, that aren't already on CBS.
Sneakily, the Auburn-Miss St. matchup could potentially be a top 15 game that weekend now after Miss St. upset LSU. They have Georgia this week so if they lose, that would be out. Another upset win, plus SEC bias, and that's our strongest competition.
Miss St. stomping UGA and Auburn taking care of business at Mizzou (who just lost to Purdue 35-3...) would put them in consideration. That'd be a ~10ish Auburn (best case for them) vs. a ~13 Miss St.
#13-15 Miss St @ #10-13 Auburn on CBS at 3:30 PM ET.
#2 Clemson @ #9-12 Virginia Tech on ABC at 8 PM ET.
I think the choice is pretty clear there. Yes, the Auburn/Miss St game could determine who really challenges Bama for the SECw crown, but Clemson/VT is an ACCCG rematch, AND a possible ACCCG preview.
True, but that all assumes neither us or Clemson stumble this weekend. Neither of us should...but crazier things have happened. We'll get a hold for this reason exactly.
Even if they put a hold on the game time, don't they usually announce where Gameday is more than a week in advance? Will the MSST/UGA game really change anything?
They will usually wait until Saturday evening/Sunday to announce. Again, unless ESPN sees no other option for them, meaning even if both us and Clemson lose in some freakish scenario this week they will still be in Blacksburg (doubt they would), they will hedge as long as is feasible. It's a big operation with lots of pull. They can be flexible.
EDIT: Not to say I think either of us will lose. Just saying that if ESPN has the ability ensure that game means as much as we all hope, they will.
It's usually during the primetime game I think.
Guys...
SEC games can't be on ABC. CBS has the over-the-air network rights. That's why there's so many SEC games on ESPN and ESPN2 in primetime.
Our competition for the ABC primetime spot would be Big 10 or 12, maybe Pac-12.
But our competition for Gameday isn't automatically limited to whoever plays in the ABC primetime game.
Yes, but this subthread that was kicked off by talk of the six day hold is in regards to the actual game time.
My bad
I'd be surprised if they don't 6 day option us. As long as we beat ODU, I don't think there is an argument that the VT-Clemson game will be the 8 pm kickoff. But, if for whatever reason, we lay an egg against ODU, I could see ESPN at least considering changing it up.
ESPN is going to hedge as much as they can.
Well...I'm surprised but also TOO HYPE!!!
8PM Kick!!!
Really?

Pending a team or two loses in the Top 12, I think they may inflate our rank to top 10 status to make this game a spectacle. No doubt they'd love to come for an 8pm night game at the Lane.
Assuming they do come, what would the possible set up locations be?
I wasn't a big fan of the practice field setting for the Post April 16th game, but that might have just been because it was post 4/16 and was more of a sad day. It was also a noon game, so stadium proximity might have been important.
Torg Bridge was kind of a hot spot when we played GT.
I think a set up on the drill field with the April 16th Memorial and Burruss Hall background would be nice. (So much space for activities...) That's also a pretty spot as the leaves may be changing by month's end.
I don't see us moving up without some big upsets. It is hard to inflate our rank just for TV since there are 30 people voting for the AP poll. 2 vs 13 is a pretty good match-up though. The only game that could be an issue now is the Miss St-Auburn game when it comes down to gameday. Herbie would just fly to blacksburg to cover our 8pm ABC slot (assuming we get it)
The matchups for teams ranked ahead of us would seemingly make it difficult for us to move to the top 10 but who knows. I think there is some potential upsets for about half the teams ranked above us with #8 Michigan @ Purdue, NC State @ #12 FSU, TCU @ #6 OK State, Miss State @ #11 Georgia, #5 USC @ Cal, #4 Penn State @ Iowa and #7 Washington @ Colorado. The closest line of all those might be -6.5 but I think a couple teams at least get a scare.
I said it in another post but I thought I'd post it here too.
You don't necessarily need a couple teams to get upsetted to move up. Have them play sloppy or in a close game vs. a team they should be pretty sound, and then beat the living crap out of ODU and the voters will see those scores and move VT past them. Not guaranteed but it happens all the time.
So we're looking at Ohio State, Georgia, and Florida State to stumble in some way.
-Florida State is playing NC State, which is a team that keeps causing issues for the top Atlantic teams. The FSU/NC State game is always closer than it should be. And this time, FSU is coming off of a weather induced two week hiatus, with a freshman QB thrown into the mix after injury. I feel like the voters haven't fully properly adjusted for the QB situation. FSU could still drop even after a win.
-Georgia is playing Mississippi State. Probably going to be a close one. But we also run into the situation that if MSST wins, they simply move up to take Georgia's old ranking. A six spot jump wouldn't be that crazy.
-Ohio State is playing UNLV. They should win that one easily, even with whatever problems they might be having.
Must be nice in a way to be NC State. You actually get a big home game every season.
If MSST beats UGA in a close game, they won't jump us unless we turn out another Delaware-type performance. Also, you're overlooking a few teams ahead of them:
Michigan has been skating on thin ice so far this season, looking underwhelming for most of their wins over Florida (missing 10 players due to suspension), Cincinnati, and Air Force. Look for them to potentially look past a Purdue team that has surprised a few people with their performance so far this season.
Colorado gets their chance at revenge for the P12CG against Washington, this time on their home turf. I'm sure they've had this game circled on their calendars all offseason.
Oklahoma State has to face a TCU team that hasn't really been challenged yet. You never know what could happen there, but to be fair a win by TCU would be more likely to put them ahead of us than the MSST scenario detailed above.
USCw travels to Berkeley to face a Cal team that admittedly isn't very good, but to be fair this is the same USCw team that is fresh off a 2-OT thriller against the mighty Longhorns that have already been manhandled by Maryland this season.
Penn State has to play at Iowa this week, where the Iowa defense has the potential to keep them within striking distance of pretty much every team they will face. Not exactly likely, but stranger things have happened.
Alabama has to travel to Nashville to take on the undefeated Vanderbilt Commodores, who....Just kidding, there's no way that Vandy pulls off the upset, and even if the entire Bama team gets replaced by a bunch of doppelgangers and actually loses this game they wouldn't drop any further than #5 anyway.Mrs. Lwyr went to Vanderbilt. She was convinced KSt. was gonna stomp them last week. She's even more down on their chances against nick satan. I'm picking the 'Dores outright.
(something something goddamn fucking UT BaB losing to fucking Vanderbilt............VANDERBILT)
Bama could lose 2 in a row and still be ranked in the top 10. Them losing probably moves us back a spot as Vandy would jump us.
lol at me.
if Miss ST beats UGA on the road, they'll leap over us (because SEC), so that one doesn't help either way.
Pet peeve, but despite our favorite conspiracies the idea that espn inflates rankings for matchups doesn't make any sense. The poll is voted on by beat writers across the country with no affiliation, and we are allowed to see those votes, there is no mechanism for those kinds of shenanigans.
It's impossible for the beat writers to be watching all the games. An argument could be made that they are catching highlights on ESPN, and how teams are represented on ESPN during Sportscenter, etc could influence a few votes one way or the other. A bit of a reach, but I'm sure it happens.
ESPN does highlights still. Could have fooled me I haven't seen them in years.
Man this place is gonna implode if they go anywhere else at this point.
And rightfully so, in my opinion. There really isn't a better place for them to go that weekend.
For those worried about the ODU game, the Hokies are currently 26 point favorites over the Monarchs this weekend. The line opened at 29, but fell to 24.5 before rebounding.
There is no current O/U line on this game.
I've said it in another thread but I'll say it here as well.
They're starting a 17 year old true freshman at QB and their best RB is out for the season,.
ESPN gives us a 96.3% chance of winning this game
This comparison comes strictly off the fact that I just got back from 2 weeks in Italy, ending it in Rome.... but ODU walks into our Coliseum feeling scared to death:
Uh not sure you put this together right. Maximus wins...
I was simply trying to capture the sense of awe the Gladiators (ODU) has entering the Colosseum
8PM KICK MOTHERFUCKERS
we have an 8pm kickoff!! on ABC!!!
Gotta admit, Fox has put on a dandy with their college football coverage. So thankful they got rid of Fox Soccer and set up FS1. Not to mention, their soccer coverage is outstanding compared to ESPN. If ACC moves to Fox, I would not complain.
We are stuck with ESPN for the long haul, I think it is a 20 year deal once the ACC Network launches. So maybe we can switch to Fox in 2039.
ESPN still has the highest production values by far and generate the most publicity, it would be a terrible idea to switch
For as much as I hated Fox's NFL coverage for so long, I LOVE their NCAAF coverage. I have quite a few friends that went to OkSt, and between hanging out with them and the spectacle of Fox's coverage I've found myself watching a lot of Big 12.
Stillwater is a highly underrated gameday experience. Strongly recommend.
Alabama and Ole Miss get an 8 PM kickoff on ESPN. Absolutely no reason they should go there, but ugh.
ehhh I am not really that worried about it. I don't think they would pass up a #2 vs. #10/11/12/13 matchup than a #1 vs. not ranked matchup but I guess we will see soon.
In all honesty, I will be as excited with or without game day.... game day for me is just icing on the cake (and not pie)
So gameday is what makes your excitement edible, got it
Alabama and Clemson are both top teams primed for the 300th Gameday.
The opponents tell a different story. One is unranked, on the way down and knee deep in scandal.
The other is ranked, on the rise, and holding a giant #Gameday4frank sign amidst a sea of 66,000 screaming fans.
Your move, ESPN...
I'm going to retract my previous comment with a #saucy "Never mind..."
Ahh so what you're saying is
If gameday does come to Blacksburg, chances are they'll setup on field hockey fields behind the west side like in 07. Although Alumni Mall would be a dope spot again.
Correct.
Isn't that where Hokie Village is?
Yep. Gameday would probably be there because they wouldn't need to set up barricades. Just check signs and whatnot on the way through the gate. Hokie Village can probably fit in there also.
Edit: There is also no grass to screw up, especially if it rains.
Working under the assumption that Gameday does come to Blacksburg, how long in advance do fans show up prior to airtime?
Tomorrow
My experiences back in '05 were that the majority of students start showing up around 6AM. I'd say a few dozen were there all night (starting at midnight).
They'll setup their set Thursday and do some on-air stuff Friday.
Yup. Friday, the set will be on the Drillfield
You know something, don't you
And back in '05 and even '07, GameDay didn't start so early.
Also for that game, we got to the Price's Fork lot (keep in mind this was before the parking garages...so one asphalt pasture of sorts) around 11-11:30. By 12:30-1 those lots were slam packed. So...yeah, early.
Dark horse candidate that no one is talking about: Mississippi State @ Auburn. If MSU beats ranked UGA this weekend, they'll have beaten then #11 and #12 teams in the country. I know Auburn hasn't looked all that impressive but it's an SEC West matchup between two ranked teams. I don't think this is that likely, but not entirely out of the question either.
Has CBS announced which game they are going with. If not, I'd assume they'd go with the highest ranked teams. Basically the winner of the UGA Miss St game. Which would give ESPN/ABC incentive to not advertise for them.
I think the importance of the different networks is way overblown. They held gameday at 4 different CBS games last year.
UF/UT on 9/24
UT/A&M on 10/8
A&M/Bama on 10/22
Bama/LSU on 11/5
That said, I 100% believe they'll be in Blacksburg next weekend.
Edit: Looks like they've already scheduled Auburn/MSST for 6PM on ESPN
I'd be more worried if Mississippi State was the home team.
Anyone else concerned with the VT Football twitter lobbying fans to go this week with signs asking for it? I remember when we were trying #gameday4frank and discussions with if it was okay once the school began to ask for it instead of a grass roots fan attempt.
I don't have a problem with it. ESPN needs every reminder they can get that the fucking thing should be on a college campus
I'm not on a desktop computer, so I can't embed the tweet, but it looks like Chris Fowler just spilled the beans about Gameday coming to Blacksburg!
#beatODU #beatODU #beatODU
I gotchu fam.
via GIPHY
He calls the games. No decision yet.
I'm not attempting to downplay anything, but Fowler was probably confirmed because of the primetime game with ABC. Not sure that is confirmation for gameday yet since he is no longer on it.
Chris Fowler isn't on game day anymore. Rece Davis replaced him a few years ago.
We all know its the same person. There is not difference between the two
Haha, I used to always get them confused. I was a silly.
What a perfect Gameday for him to join the cast again. Corso's 300th pick, Blacksburg, VA. I would not be surprised to see him on stage with everyone *if we get gameday*.
Folks, it is all but official- Chris Fallica ("Bear") from College Gameday on ESPNU radio this morning was talking about the VT/ODU and Clemson/BC matchup this morning and how much of a total underdog the Eagles and Monarchs are. He proceeded to say the following- "At a total of 62.5 point underdogs, we really don't need either of those two winning, which would send us into a scramble on s Saturday night to find a different location for next weekend."
I do believe, IT IS ON!!!
Edited to correct my not-so-smart phone's autocorrect.
This anticipation is unhealthy for me.
Who do the Old Dominion Buckeyes play this weekend?

I threw up in my mouth a little bit reading that

They aint played nobody PAAWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLL
DAMNIT. This is why I hate these smart phones... they think they're smarter than us..... Obviously I meant ODU. And apparently I bash OSU enough that my phone just assumed I was talking shit again.
A friend of mine spoke to someone in our athletic department who also confirmed Gameday is coming. #Sauces
May not be related, but this is the top story on ESPN college fb page.
Honestly would have liked to have seen him his freshmen year, but I guess I also would have liked to see Beamer recruit better to help Vick and in follow up years showcasing Vick, so what can you do.
WHAT!? The Hokies went 22-2 in Vicks two years playing. Their only losses were to FSU in the NCG and to a #3 Miami team in the Orange Bowl.
And the year after he left they lost 4, what I'm saying is Beamer should have used Vick and the run to NC to recruit guys who would have been at Tech after Vick left. On the 99 team there were only a handful who even got time on the preseason NFL rosters.
Yeah and Bama's running backs suck in the pros but do you see their fans complaining based on what they do in college?
Lee Suggs also got hurt in the opener that season and didn't come back the rest of the year. Losing him + Vick was going to lead to some more losses.
Lee Suggs, Kevin Jones, Andre Davis, Jake Grove, Corey Moore, and DeAngelo Hall not good enough for you?
Imagine that list if Beamer and Weaver has been able to leverage the NC game and Vick in the program properly. 3 guys on that list had good to above average NFL careers.
I seriously don't know where you're going with this. If by "leverage properly" you mean to do more than go on to win a bunch of ACC titles and consistently have all-conference first-teamers, then that's exactly what we did. No we didn't go back to a national title right after Vick left, but it seems like that was the only thing we didn't do.
Not sure why you're equating players' NFL success with their success while at Virginia Tech, seems irrelevant to me. In that case Tim Tebow, Robert Griffin, Ron Dayne, and tons of other players just weren't that great.
I think he's referring to the fact that after the title game, we made a conscious decision to try and completely lock down the state rather than try to take our recruiting national. Considering how we eventually had our lunch eaten in recruiting the top in state players and we've only been trying to go national in the last couple years, there is some validity to that thought.
I would certainly understand that sentiment, I just definitely would not have inferred that from the statements made above.
Dude what? It was leveraged. We went from a nothing school that maybe recruited top 50 to a school capable of snatching the top recruit in the country, teams loaded with NFL talent, and that could coast to top 25 recruiting rankings even in extreme down years. Not to mention extreme growth of the campus and school made possible by that success. Maybe it could have been taken even further, but we leveraged that success to become everything we are now.
Did it not also help funding for the stadium expansion that is the South End Zone? I remember that being under construction and in plain view from "freshmen bleachers" in 2001.
It leveled us to what other schools were doing it didn't let us rise above. Look at the athletic budget we sit something like 50th in the country that's awful for a school like Tech in a conference like the ACC. Yes it lead to improvements but it wasn't used to the extent it should have been, growth of Hokie Club, growth of budget, expansion and remodeled of numerous athletic facilities that are just now being started to be worked on etc.
Right, but your argument was about recruiting after Vick, not fundraising. Both important, but also different.
Its all the same. Recruiting takes facilities, better coaches salaries and resources line travel etc. Beamer and Weaver didn't look ahead far enough. They thought sticking to what got Tech there would keep working in the long term and it didn't. If you think recruting was just fine after a NC run I can't open your eyes to what could have been.
I think it's important to realize that that was 15 years ago. Recruiting then was different than today.
Sure whatever they're connected no doubt but don't base your recruiting argument on fundraising
Lol the Corey Moore quote is gold...
perhaps this should be its own discussion, but now we have to thank Vick for Foster staying in Blacksburg?!!? - "Bud Foster, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator: "Steve Spurrier offered me a job at Florida,"
I rewatched the miracle in morgantown recently and this was indeed a thing, announcers brought it up about "long time DC Bud Foster"...little did they know
As if the above #sauces were not enough, we have more of the ESPN crew confirming their presence in Blacksburg:
Doesn't he do sideline reporting?
That and the most important part, the Marty Party during Sports Center right before Gameday.
Yes, but Maria Taylor is the sideline reporter for the Saturday Night crew.
Although they do like to double up on the sideline reporters for certain big games.
I'll take a tall glass of Maria Taylor, please
Personally, I prefer Laura Rutledge, another of the mothership's highly qualified reporters.
I sure do miss Kaylee Hartung :(
Hell yeah- he's coming home!
Marty Smith is my hero.
(Edit) Relevant also:
might he be leading new 'let's go... hokies" chant after the 3rd quarter?
Naw, reporters cant really show Bias, and that would be Bias. As much as he might enjoy it.
I remember him telling a story on the field at some game. And I wasn't watching tv.
It's
Fucking
Go-time
Dabo: Hold my beer
Who would have thought the Clemson-BC game might be what ruins our Gameday chances.
Please remind Clemson of this. They forgot to bring "tunnel vision" to their BC game
It's on now. Biggest game in 10+ years in Blacksburg. That place is going to be insane next weekend
Just heard them announce GameDay will be in Blacksburg next weekend!
LETS FUCK THEM UP
If you're friends schedule their wedding for Sept. 30th, are they really your friends? At least it's a morning wedding. Gonna be speeding from RVA to Blacksburg next weekend.
My cousin has her wedding scheduled in Charlottesville at 5 p.m. I have RSVPed yes and already rented my tux and a hotel room. I will be in BBurg Thursday morning through Saturday approx 3-4 p.m. If I don't go to the wedding, my mother will kill me. I don't give much of a care what my cousin says, but I sure as hell wish I had said NO on the RSVP, but alas, family.
Decisions, decisions....
Your cousin seems nice. Tell your mom you did the best you could. Life is hard. I think you made the right decision.
Saturday Night Football, doing a promo for next week.
Fowler: "You guys made a call on GameDay yet?"
Herbie: "I . . . don't know. Maybe Bear might know?"
Fowler: "Hokie fans are eager for that answer."
Kirk just made it official during the Iowa PSU game. Here comes Gameday Hokies.
How in the hell did you get that posted so fast? I didn't even have a chance for this page to load.
I'm sitting in a hotel by myself, only so many things I could be doing with my time.
#AdultBlock
Fucking Lit FAM!!!
It's official. Gentleman, paint your signs.
