'A Highlight Show:' The Michael Vick Virginia Tech Experience

Article by ESPN's Andrea Adelson with some great excerpts regarding Michael Vick. Per Adelson, "We talked to 11 former coaches, teammates, opponents and future Virginia Tech quarterbacks to ask for their first memories watching Vick play, and what made him so special."

My favorite part of the article was this quote by Corey Moore:

"Going against him on the scout team, I remembered the Syracuse week and him being Donovan McNabb. It was like, 'Oh my God, McNabb was good, but he wasn't that good. Michael was making some of us look pretty stupid missing tackles."

That 1999 season was the only one when I went to all the games...Miami and Syracuse were my favorite games.

The previous Spring, I had Jim Ferugio, Dave Meyer and Joel Marchant in one of my Latin American history classes, I recall Marchant talking about Vick coming in the next season. Ferugio was a back-up defensive end who mentioned Vick's elusiveness in the Spring Game.

Coincidentally I also had AL Clark as my Chemistry Lab partner, he was a pretty cool guy, very smart.

I never knew this story. This is crazy

Did not know that Spurrier offered Foster a job at Florida...

Beamer's quote:

Sometimes, we just hoped our receivers were covered so that Michael would have to scramble around and run.

What Beamer was thinking:

Ronald Curry, Vick's high school rival QB: "My first memory was in rec league. I came to see him play. I think he was playing for the Boys and Girls Club. I played for the Hampton Tornadoes. He was on one of the teams that was younger. We heard about him back then, when I think he was 11 or 12 years old, and he was a great talent.

"He was just as good as me, right below me or maybe a little better. He was more of a football player than I was, as I played football and basketball."

I was in high school in the 757 during the MV7/AI3/curry era and all they talked about was Ronald Curry was the next best thing since sliced bread. He had all the hype locally. In reality, he was never better than MV7 or AI. NOPE! Not even close! I rooted more for MV7 and AI.

Ronald Curry gave a half assed complement in this article. Sad coming from a guy who was heralded as one of the best atheletes to come out of the 757.

Ya, I noticed that too. His "compliment" was a mixture of self-promotion, jealousy, and excuses IMO.

EDIT: Add confusion/delusion to the list.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Vick never beat Curry in high school though I believe

No one was more disappointed than Vick that Tech's 2000 season opener against Georgia Tech was canceled because of a lightning storm that hit Blacksburg — ESPN analyst Corso's rental car was struck by a bolt and fried in the parking lot — just minutes before kickoff.

Stinespring remembered Vick saying, "Let's go, let's go."

"I said, 'Michael, it's lightning,'" Stinespring said. "He said, 'It's not gonna hit me.'

Thanks for sharing that article, hadn't seen that one before. This quote made me smile:

In the 11 years of the Bowl Championship Series, Vick is the only rookie to quarterback his team to the title game.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Let's not forget that Ron Dayne won a lifetime achievement heisman. He should hand deliver it to Vick with his apologies.

I don't post much but felt folks on this board would enjoy it. I went to Deep Creek HS in Chesapeake, VA and graduated in 94. I started working on my masters in the spring of 1999 at ODU (undergrad from there as well). I substitute taught back at DC that spring since my classes were at night. I was in a science class that had Vegas Robinson (VT signee), Terrell Ricks (UVA signee), and Darryl Grant (UNC signee). It was towards the end of class and I let the students talk for a bit as they had stayed on task most of the block. Darryl and Terrell were going at it about how their school was going to own the other. Vegas didn't say a word, which is rare for Vegas as he liked to chat. Finally, I said "Vegas I am surprised you are sitting out this convo". He said "I don't have to say a word. We got my boy up in Blacksburg red shirting by the name of Michael Vick. When we are playing in the national title game next year they will know what's up". You all know the rest. I saw Vegas a few years later at a football game during a VT bye week. I said Vegas do you remember that day in science class? He said "Yes sir, I tried to tell them but they just didn't want to listen. They know now don't they?".

On a side note, anyone who hates on Curry as a HS recruit is nuts. I know his team was loaded but he is easily the best HS player I have ever seen come out of the 757 with Percy Harvin second (his accelration to top speed in about half a step was so absurd it wasn't fair). I grew up with Dre Bly and Deangelo was from my HS (I have a good story on him if anyone wants to hear it) and I have seen many others. Curry was easily the best. Deep Creek beat them his freshman year and we lost in the playoffs to Hampton the next 3 and they weren't close. Michael was great but without much help you couldn't tell what his ceiling was. Ronald was on another level. He wasn't the athlete Michael, Percy, or Deangelo were but he never got hit square, had great game speed in pads and could cut without slowing down, and his vision was tremendous.

Yes

I love the tickle of Dickel in my belly

I was subbing in his class his sophomore year. We had some free time and his desk was right next to teacher's desk. We started chatting and I noted to him you my be the best football player to come out of Deep Creek and we have a pretty good track record. I told him barring injury if he wanted to make it to NFL the only way he doesn't is if he doesn't have the want to because all the ability in the world is there. If you don't make it then you only have yourself to blame. He kind of looked at me like really I am that good. I said yes there is no doubt in my mind.

He also came up to me in the hall just before signing day and said FSU was trying to flip him hard. I just said ultimately the decision is yours but you can't go wrong with being a DB under Bud and around Deep Creek a man's word goes a long way. I am not saying I kept him from going to FSU or anything. I just wanted to point out a few things haha.

The main reason my wife loves watching VT football and understands the game is she loved watching Michael Vick our sophomore and junior years at school.
