Considering he sounds crazy about it, it has to be decent. I remember LT hating on the foghorn leghorn helmet, which i can't blame him for.

I was just going by appearance and I for one enjoyed the heck outta that 3OT game against Marshall. Anyone who actually knows football knows how good Marshall is (especially offensively) and Sanchez went to USCw and failed hard in the NFL, which is just comical to me.
I think my sarcasm was missed in my comment. My mention of the 3OT game was to make the point that people who don't understand why that game was tough are stupid. I guess my down vote was because it would appear I don't understand football? Thanks though.

Edit: The article from hokiesports dot com (linked above) includes what I think is a pretty good quote from CFB about the helmets and what they symbolize. I normally try not to get caught up in the uniform drama, but for what it's worth, I like 'em.
But why wear them on the road?
It's kind of like showing off the Hokie Stone for the world. When at home, the aerial cameras can flip to it whenever they want. I honestly think it will fire our guys up, remind them they're representing our university on national TV. Any little extra motivation is a plus in this game given that it always has division race implications.
And, given Frank's long-winded remark, maybe he's the guy who likes all these different designs. I shouldn't say long-winded, as I loved the part he said about the fans hanging in there against Marshall on Saturday. Calling that out was first class on his part.

I was thinking the same thing....I am not a fan of switching helmets so often during the season, but I also don't mind it if they look sweet. Based on AJ's tweet I was expecting something really cool, like a metal finish or candy finish VT helmet...but not this. Oh well. Wonder if different uniforms will be worn.

I have a sinking feeling that they're gonna put the pylon logo on it. The only way they can save these helmets at this point is to make the logo a horse on a treadmill.
I think a stripe to cover the mesh point and the pylon logo is about the only thing they can do to improve them. A standard VT will do the trick as well, but then again, weaver is in on this isn't he?

So the VT football twitter account is polling the fans for what uniform combo they'd like to see. I was scrolling through the responses, and the support for #AllMaroonEverything was overwhelming. It was basically unanimous.
I've just now decided I really like the VT football twitter page. They tweeted this earlier

I'm a fan. Still not sure why we are wearing these on the road though since there isn't any Hokie Stone in Atlanta. Maybe because it will be the only game we will play on ESPN after noon this year. sigh
I said this when this was first released and I'll say it again. This helmet has potential but the colors of the stone need to be more unified. Gray and white stones are cool, the orange-ish are not. And that seam in the middle of the helmet has to go. If you can't make the helmet look like it's made of a solid wall of stone without unjoined seams, you can't pull this off.
EDIT: And some sort of maroon Hokie emblem in the middle needs to exist. The VT is preferred but the pylon symbol is acceptable, even though we should have had that on the helmets for the Military Appreciation game.

I'll be honest. At first I was very much against these helmets. I still think they're hideous. I think the concept has potential but I'm more than dissatisfied by the execution in this case. But it doesn't really matter what I think. As much as it bothers me, it matters what the younger players and recruits think. As long as the players are thrilled about them (and it seems like they are) that's a good sign. I don't care if I love 'em or hate 'em as long as the players/recruits like them...I'm okay with 'em.

I like the helmets. But wearing them for a road game makes 0.0 sense! We're highlighting the rich heritage of our campus...for an away game. Do we really expect espn to show shots of our campus while they talk about them? I would bet they will spend more time talking about GiT's building style than ours because of it.
Yeah there needs to b a stripe to cover up that seam, it's horrendously ugly and tacky like that. But I think a maroon stripe down the middle and a maroon VT on both sides would actually make it look great. I hope those are the alluded "changes."
I would put money on the fact that it won't be the classic VT. Don't shoot the messenger, and I very well could be wrong (covering all my bases here) - but usually it seems as if they don't put the decals on if it is a newer decal until the actual game. The bowl game comes to mind- however, I know they practiced with a decal to honor Sandy Hook and VT as well. I'm guessing for the pylons. Beamer talked about them a god bit on TTL.
Someone's going to have to help me out. Which one is the "pylon" logo? (and while I have your attention, which game had the white helmet with the number on one side and the gobbler on the other?)

After reading TSL's minutes from last night's TTL, I'm cautiously optimistic we'll have #AllMaroon uniforms (after all, it can't be #AllMaroonEverything with a stone brain bucket). Granted, this is paraphrased, but the good ole Lester said, "Tech will wear maroon jerseys and Hokie Stone helmets for Georgia Tech. Youll have to tune in to find out what pants theyll wear."

The guy in front of us at the game works for some department whose name escapes me right now. However, he showed us a picture of the final product and told us that there's going to be pylons on the helmet as well.

I do find it very interesting that the NFL is not allowing throwbacks this season because of their new stance on helmets; that players must use the same shell the entire year (as long as possible.) Thus, ruling out different helmets during the year. This is contrary to the Oregon-ization of NCAA football, which we are following. On top of VT providing an in depth study of helmets just last season.
Do we, VT, have it right in utilizing a new helmet each week? Or should the same one be used the entire year, NFL, because you know it is fitted to the player wearing it?
I read more into that and it seems that the NFL is doing it to prevent law suits. There are several helmets, ie. VSR4, that are discontinued and better models are out--the Speeds...Some NFL players are stuck in traditions and want to stick with the older models which many teams have a ton in stock. The downside is their stock is usually in the base-shell color so the only way you can change the helmets is the logos and striping but not the colors.
If you change the base color, you have to go to the manufacturer to get a helmet made and thus the discontinued models are not eligible. Players are apt to say they received their concussion in a brand new helmet, thus a law suit suggesting helmet switching is bad. The NFL is only doing this to protect themselves. With today's technology, the break in phases of most items have been significantly reduced or eliminated all together.
Yea I don't know how there is a "break in period" for helmets. I'm no materials engineer but I can't imagine that plastic gets STRONGER as it's rammed repeatedly into 200+ bodies at ridiculous speeds.
The argument in the lawsuits isn't the plastic, hence the VSR4's still exist in the NFL, it is the idea that the padding molds to your head for a more secure helmet. Either way, this is crap, and the NFL should just ban all outdated helmets and be done with the discussion.
First of all, all of VT's football helmets are screened/selected in coordination with the work of Stefan Duma in the school of of Biomedical Engineering at Tech, and have been for quite some time now (I think we'er approaching a decade?). I don't think many schools are in a position to make better safety-oriented decisions on on football helmets than Tech, given our collection and use of data on the field AND in the lab. You cannot wear an unsafe/poorly rated helmet at Tech (or at most schools, thanks to Tech/WF's star-rating system). In this respect college football is WAY ahead of those ostriches at the NFL, who seem content to buy their way out of every ethical dilemma they are unwillingly forced to confront... they have yet to take action beyond a "suggested chart" of helmets for their players. F*cking criminal.
Those studies, by the way, are a product of the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES), a product of ACC collaboration, which have been cited publicly in innumerable press coverage, academic papers, lawsuits, and even commercials for Toyota. I'd like to see proponents of "VT to the SEC" come up with similarly-prestigious research partnerships in a conference that is such a bastion of academic prowess as the SEC...
I can't tell if this is a reprimand or simply a comment, lol. I wondered the same thing, and ultimately, VT's research is what caused me to dig deeper. How can the University that leads the world, pretty much, in helmet research let their team change helmets when the NFL is not allowing it? So yeah...screw the NFL

And don't you think there is enough $$$ in the NFL to find helmets to match the fit for a throwback game? Of all of the big machines out there, I would think the NFL would be able to find a solution to make it work, even within the concussion era.
It's tricky..you see, the VSR4 is discontinued because there are safer and better products on the market. The NFL can't really fund that since they would be funding a digression in safety. They only thing they can and should do is force all players to wear current model helmets. Toyota wouldn't let you drive a recalled prius, would they? You would lose the lawsuit if you willingly and knowledgeably drove a recalled car?
But clearly, this makes far too much sense and thus, it won't happen.

Half a great idea....just "Exit Light" on the FRONT of the linesmen and backers helmets, so the opponents get that subliminal message every play!

I am watching Inside College Football on CBS Sports Network and they were bagging on our helmets, too. Aaron Taylor said Hokie Stone helmets were appropriate because our offense is stuck in the Stone Age. Sigh. I laughed it off though since I am the only person in America who actually was watching that show.
I love the Hokies more than some of my family members, but you gotta admit...the Stone Age comment is pretty funny.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere in the thread but I really like these mockups that Clark came up with. I think the VT one actually looks pretty cool with the hokiestone background.
I would be ok with all but the white VT in those four options he has posted. They look pretty sharp there, especially teamed with the #allmarooneverything uni's
He has some solid work on there. I like the pylon probably the best strangely enough.
Also, those baseball mocks are pretty sick looking. And yes, those are the uniforms for basketball this year. We have the usual 4 (white, maroon, orange, grey) and they are actually pretty good looking.

I heard about Dodd being 100 second hand on our message board. Also, I saw the old GT jerseys on Andy Bitters twitters.

well they're not ranked. I don't think it's appropriate to say we're ranked lower than them, since they're NOT ranked.
For the same reason, I think it's ridiculous to consider this a game worthy of the "Upset Watch" tag. If they were ranked and we beat them that would be an upset. If we were ranked and they beat us that would be an upset.
Two unranked teams facing off at the beginning of the season...doesn't fit the profile of an upset.
Maybe I'm crazy, but the fact that EVERYONE seems to think if VT wins it's an upset is really bothering me.
If you extend the "rankings" past just the top 25, they are #27 and we're #33. And we're 3-1 and they're unbeaten, and they've already beaten 2 ACC opponents (including some people's preseason Coastal favorites) while we've struggled to get past 2 (admittedly decent) C-USA teams. All things considered, I think they've earned the right to be called the "favorite" at this point in time.
I think it's fair to call them the favorite. And they're favored in Vegas. But to me, every single game ever played will have a team favored for one reason or another. I don't think EVERY single game is considered an upset if the favored team doesn't win. When a heavily favored team loses to a significantly less established team, it is an upset.
Yes, GT has a leg up on the coastal division and it's true that they still don't have a loss. But our loss came at the hands of #1 Bama, and aside from UNC (and at this point they're questionable) GT has had a pretty soft schedule. I think it would be more accurate to consider VT and GT evenly matched. Therefore, the loser of the game wouldn't have suffered an upset.
But perception is perception. Tech-nically they are favored so I can see your argument, but I get the sense the media is considering a VT victory an upset because it would surprise them.
Everyone was surprised when App State toppled Michigan. THAT was an upset.

I prefer the stone on these to the ones posted of the real helmet so far. Much better looking and allows the maroon to pop in the logos. I think I still prefer the Pylon logo over this one but its a sharp looking helmet none the less.

ah...noted. Well amazing post of his design then. I love that design the best, can't wait to see what they come up with I just hope it stands up. I really wish they would have stronger designers like Clark working on our unis.
Clark actually does a lot of design work for the athletic department, ranging from pocket schedules and posters to the stadium cups at Lane and Cassell. you can check out all the things he's done right here.

I really like these. I just hope the War Memorial stickers will stay in place.
Would have looked so cool if there were just a little orange on the sides of the #brainbuckets!
Helmets looked money, but all the white on our uniforms should have been hokie stoned, too
