Is it definitely the throwback helmets that we wore in the independence bowl or did they just put a white face mask on our current helmet.

I don't think it's ESPN or Nike. I remember in Beamer's last season someone associated with the team mentioned the players got to choose what they wore for a few games.
When we had such atrocious helmets in 2012 they said the seniors chose the uniforms. When asked about it Bruce Taylor said something like "I don't know which seniors they're talking about because I didn't get any say" or something like that.

This was 2009 vs. UNC. I had actually been interested in seeing this combo, especially since the sides of the jersey were a different color than the main part. This jersey was just an inverse of our usual maroon jersey at the time.
Yeah . . . and then we lose this game on a last second field goal. To UNC. The first time we had lost to them as part of the ACC. To make matters worse, I was watching the game on a TV that was dying (the picture was gradually turning more and more greenish and sideways), while sitting on an air mattress that was slowly leaking out. So, nothing was going well for me that night. At least I got to take out some frustration the next morning by heaving the TV into the dumpster.
I said on twitter yesterday that this is our best orange jersey.
All three colors were great. Those jerseys were just some of the best we've ever had. The white ones with the maroon pants... ah visions of Eric Berry biting hard on that Tyrod fake.

I recall taking a picture of the first time VT ever wore orange pants. It was the Rutgers game at home, 1993. We had maroon jerseys and orange pants.

Okay I like the combo for this week, interesting choice if we are going throwback helmets. However one thing, why do people hate the use of orange?
I don't mind orange with maroon but white and orange bring to mind a dream cicle for me. Just doesn't feel as tough. Stupid reason right?
I see how people could hate it, but our orange isn't creamsicle colored like the Bucs throwbacks (i'm probably one of the few people who love that combo). I'm definitely in the minority when I say if we went all orange I wouldn't hate it, and there are a couple other combos we have used/could use. I thought it was odd not to see it last year so I hope it makes a return this year, probably against UNC.

This is why i'm curious, I can't wrap my head around why people hate the use of the color as something more than an accent in the uniform. I'm genuinely wondering why people hate it?

There are certain colors that should not dominate a uniform, and orange is one of them. I don't think we've ever seen Auburn or Texas come out in orange jerseys and pants. UVA probably has, but they've have made it obvious that they have no sense of design whatsoever.
They may not wear orange jerseys AND pants a lot but they wear the orange jersey pictured a lot.
Their orange is a much better primary color than ours is. Ours is a great tertiary color behind maroon and white (in either order).
Their orange is the same as our orange, in that they are both burnt.
But they actually use burnt orange on their sports uniforms, we use VDOT construction zone safety orange on our sports uniforms.
I agree that we don't use our true "burnt orange" color and it seems dumb that we don't, since everyone tends to agree that current orange is unfavorable.
I would like to see a true burnt orange jersey (like the Texas one above) with true Chicago maroon pants and helmet. I may be able to get on board with that combo.

Texas would have a full blown riot if they tried to change their typical uniform combos, they along with true blue blood schools USC, Bama, Penn St., Michigan, should never deviate from classic simple looks. The only other P5 schools I can think wear orange are Florida, Okie state, OSU west, Clemson, Illinois?. However there is a bigger uniform problem as a whole, along with the "effect" games that feeds into the problem. I guess to me its weird that if your not a blue blood / team with a classic uniform you can get away with this stuff.

I'll again be in the minority and say I don't like these uniforms. I'll get downvoted to the pits, but I think the piping is wildly unnecessary/looks out of place as weird piping.
He was referring to Daryl Tapp (Tapp, Tapp, Tapp) not necessarily the jerseys. The maroon jersey and white pants has generally been my favorite combo, outside of all maroon everything.

My love for the piping has nothing, I can assure you, to do with the fact that my maroon jersey was purchased in the fall of 2005 from the on campus bookstore...

Is this the reason? I think its a good look, now the helmet and stripes may be an issue but that's not something we can change.
Apparently the orange unis caused Logan to think we were wearing blue, black and white (had 4 INTs...believe all were in the red zone). We outgained them by almost 2x, they didn't convert a third down (0-11, I think), I think they didn't even have a completion in the second half (only had like 7 for the game)....and we lost.
Seems reasonable, I was at that game, word on the dorm floor after the game was orange uniforms knocked our season to blovian.
You probably also like most of the NFL color rush uniforms too...
I'd love the color rush if they didn't have that stupid one helmet rule in the NFL that, for instance, keeps the Panthers wearing a silver dome over bright blue everything else. I wouldn't want to see color rush more than once a year but it's fun when it happens.
some are good some are awful, I think the mono look can be pulled off Its a case by case basis though.
But the worst ones are usually the ones that fall over on the warm color spectrum. There's a reason why Cincinnati and Green Bay went with white as their colors. The Jaguars look like piss with their all yellow uniforms, and I'm hoping that the Redskins can avoid color rush again, because I do not want to see those all yellows.
I guess a big problem as mentioned above is the helmet issue, so college has a lot more freedom to make stuff work. For some teams an all mono look works, others it doesn't. I wouldn't hate it if we went orange helmets, orange jersey, and white pants. Side note if your piss looks like the jags unis should probably consult a doctor about why its the color of grey poupon mustard. Also it seems like teams are wearing the same color rush they wore last year, could change but probably won't.

Ah yes, the game that Kendall had 4 interceptions. Yes that's FOUR, count 'em, 1, 2, 3, 4 Vlasic Pickles and we still lost. That game and the Muralind game that year grind my gears so much.

I just hate how the stripes on the helmet don't match the stripes on the jersey which don't match the stripes on the pants. Just get rid of the damned stripes already. I'm totally cool with mixing and matching, but just look symmetrical.

It'll be the current maroon helmet (with tapered stripes) just with a white facemask instead of maroon. Also, no stripes on the pants. Solid orange ones like our regular solid white and maroon pants.
Have the stripes on the pants been confirmed? There's no indication in the reveal pic, and none of our pants this year so far have had stripes.

It should look better with no stripes on the pants and the a pop of orange on the helmet with the current stripes. Not really sure why they're doing a white facemask, other than to change things up and do a modern version of the 1993 Independence Bowl look.
