Stupid answer, but it just is.
Rule is that once the ball is contacted by either team in the air, all bets are off. I have no idea what the exact wording is, but the idea is that the ball in the air has been "defensed" once tipped.

NFL rules say that the rule applies from when the ball is passed to when the ball is touched by anyone. That doesn't explain anything at all, but it's the definition of the rule.
Think of it like a pass downfield that gets tipped up high. If it looks like somebody might catch it, you can then tackle that person before the ball falls to them legally (It's basically a fumble until it hits the ground once a pass touches somebody).

Man outside of 1 play Keene is having an awesome game. He's a better blocker as a freshman than any of our WR's.
It's been mentioned already, but Cam being out is going to be huge for the growth of this team. Kumah is stepping up something fierce. The better chemistry Jackson can develop with Kumah, savoy, Keene, pimpleton, etal, the better for the rest year, as well as next year and beyond. Great opportunity to grow the offense.

SLOW START? Clemson who I think is the best team in the country scored SEVEN in the first three quarters on this BC Defense.
Truthfully, I think it could be around 24 or 27 to 3. Maybe it just feels boring so that has thrown me off.
I think that 3rd and 2 we converted would have been a great time for the jump pass.
I would have play-actioned at some point during that last series.
We'll see if we open it up but again I can see this easily being a 28-10 type of game that isn't too exciting really.

Actually, I think this is good for JJ. He depends on Cam to bail him out too often even if it means throwing into double or triple coverage the last few weeks. Now he HAS to go thru progressions and build trust with the other receivers. This will help in the long run.

So many people in this thread are acting like Virginia Tech is a top 10 team and that BC is garbage. In reality VT is solid team trending upwards and BC is a solid middle of the road power 5 team. A 17 to 3 halftime score feels pretty good. Repeat this performance and tech wins 34 to 6 and most fans would be pumped city.

I thought we recovered fine in terms of other guys stepping up (Savoy, Kumah, Keene all contributed a lot tonight) - we just couldn't get out of our own way - the early turnover, all the fuuuuucking penalties, couple drops, and some really bad misses by JJ, when he wasn't running for his life.
Offensive line was a big disappointment tonight, esp after playing what (in my opinion) added up to a pretty darn good game against Clemson, net-net.
I mean, let's just call it what it was. We played poorly. Not at all to the level of our capability. The run game was quite terrible, especially against a defense that was supposed to be poor defending it.
I'd wager that French's review will point out that half the sacks were on JJ, not the OL.

Unfortunately, the OL is responsible for blocking for the running backs, too.

People on other boards are absolutely trashing Jackson right now. He was 22-33 and over 300 yards without Cam for basically the entire game. What more could you want? He's a Redshirt Freshman.

It really is. I understand wanting your team to succeed. Everyone does but to be so critical as to trash a kid who threw for 300+ yards and completed 67% of his passes is beyond the pale. Don't understand how people can be so toxic over arbitrary things.
Threw for more than double the pass yd that BC allows in a game, and basically ran a "burn the clock" O for the last 20-25 min of the game.
People on reddit are basically calling for Cornelsen's head on a stake.
I've never seen so many people in an outrage over a win. May need to stop with those live threads.
There were a lot of calls that had me shaking my head.
I mean, I don't disagree that the play calling was suspect at times. The redzone efficiency is worrisome. We are limited at times as is on offense especially when a player as dynamic as Cam goes down. But Cornelson and Fuente have both shown the ability to put together solid game plans and put them into action. I consider myself a little high-strung as a fan but good god people are insane.
I go back and forth on what I think about Cornelson. I have been harping on the slow starts vs. Delaware and ODU as major red flags. Regardless, your plans go out the window when you lose your best receiver. With that in mind I think we did what was necessary to put enough points on the board to win while taking some risks in terms of passing to a lot of green players. Consider these numbers: Sean Savoy 9 for 139 yards, Dalton Keene 4 for 66 yards, Eric Kumah 4 for 53 yards, Henry Murphy 3 for 40 yards, Travon McMillan 1 for 13 yards, Cam Phillips 1 for 11 yards. That's an amazing 14.6 average yards per reception mostly to receivers who have not put up huge numbers in previous. games. I think at times last year we saw opportunity present itself and our team take advantage of it and put up massive numbers. If we consider Fuente's philosophy: Pass to Score, Run to Win you can see that was pretty consistent with tonight's game. Once we took a big lead we went away from all the passing and for the most part stuck with a somewhat pathetic running game. I think we need to reconsider some of our QB runs. I don't know if that is a blocking issue or if JJ is too apprehensive. I have noticed the delay plays on the QB keepers are either not fooling the defense or are so poorly executed they have become a liability. I will reserve my criticism for Cornelson's play calling until after our next game. With a bye week we should be able to either integrate more players along with getting Cam back or get those other players more snaps in practice if we don't get Cam back. As always I'll take the W and I'll also take the extra playing time given to green players.
My quick thoughts:

Play calling is very curious. Our last 3 red zone drives, 0 pass attempts (1 sack, but we didn't even get the ball off). We seem afraid to throw...DCs will notice this.
WRs looked good/solid. Youngins stepped up (inconsistent, but good progress)
We certainly have been conservative with our passing game inside the red zone. I don't think we trust any receiver to go up and win one-on-one. I don't think we are even comfortable throwing the ball up to Cam against a quality opponent like that. Last year we had Bucky and Ford. Eventually a WR will develop and be able to climb the ladder and make similar plays but right now we just don't have that.
But what happened to the Chris Cunningham special? And why abandon the quick slants when they worked all night?
That's a good point. The only ones who know for sure are on the staff. It's definitely frustrating watching us pile up offensive yards and not be able to turn that into 6. It's something that needs to be looked at and I'm sure it will be especially with the upcoming bye week.
Ugly win, but a win. Glad we get a week off to deal with these injuries.
I understand the BC defense is good but when will Chung lose his position to someone that can actually move his feet? He got beaten badly so many times tonight.
Unfortunately I think Chung won his position over players who aren't even as good as he is.
Our running game in the second half was ugly, the announcers were ugly, the referees were ugly, the fans in the stands were ugly, the play calling in the second half was ugly, the penalties were ugly. Let's face it, this was one flat out, thorough, thru and thru, uninspired, downright UGLY game. Strange, but I can't figure out why I'm so unhappy about having a win. It almost seems like a miracle we didn't manage to loose this one.
i very much felt the same way. this might be an unpopular opinion, but I think we have lost our edge when it comes to physicality. I remember when we used to swallow QBs and RBs up in the backfield on a regular basis. I remember when we used to be so good at one on one tackling in the open field that the opposing team would be physically afraid of us lining up at the line of scrimmage. I just haven't seen that with any sort of consistency. A few plays here and there are nice, but this used to be our bread and butter. Too often it seems like the backfield is pristine, or the WR or RB or even more embarrassingly, the QB takes 3 hits before he goes down 10 yards later than he should have. Even when we do make the tackle, so often the defender barely trips him up giving him another yard or two as he sprawls forward, as opposed to crushing the guy back onto his ass in a commanding fashion. I think we have lost our edge when it comes to physicality.
