For someone who's supposed to be such an offensive genius I keep waiting for Fuente to impress me in a big game.

Dude seems really good at dropping 60 on garbage teams and 10 on anybody with a pulse.

Well they obviously saw something on the film that said to run the ball a lot.... For an offense that hasn't run the ball consistently all year.

...and still hasn't.

We put the K in Kwality

Losing Nijman forced us to run more. It's nearly impossible to have a passing game without a great Left Tackle. Osterloh (French probably knows more) is better at run blocking than pass protection.

Because We Have no MLB that will fill the Gap. Or wants to make head on contact. Period. Nothing new since he has been the MLB..

Dude you literally only come to this site to complain about Motuapuaka. Go somewhere else, and while you're at it learn about defensive football.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Something tells me Drew stole his girl.

Step away and be honest....this offense is lead by a r-frosh, has 1.5 receivers, average o line and below average running backs. Any offense we have shown this year has absolutely been schemed by the staff. Redirect your concerns, the offensive coaches are fine.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

If talent is the issue, then the offensive coaches he staff needs to recruit players that are better. Corn and Vice have not done that.

Our OL has been sad for years

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

This response is illogical. My response was to someone who said 'the offensive coaches are performing fine.'

Our offenses isn't good. 70th best based on S&P actually. The offensive coaches need to get more out of the players or focus on recruiting better ones. Corn and Vice don't seem to be tearing it up on the trail, so we're choosing to do neither. If either had a few 4*s waiting in the wings to take over, things would be different.

Saying 'Our OL has been sad for years' literally means nothing when talking about these coaches and players.

Bingo.. great post. We all sit around on February 5th and say, OK we signed the #24 class in America- cool- got some good players in there. Yeah, we signed a 3 star OL grey shirt and 1 more 2 star OL in terms of numbers, but we are Virginia Tech, and we will be fine. Meanwhile Clemson, FSU, and Miami - and even UNC some years sign top 10 classes loaded with 4 stars and plenty of trench players, and we all wonder why we are still "building" the offense/OL? Louisville nabbed a virginia LT OL prospect last year that we needed badly for example. Recruiting services do get it wrong- many anecdotes here, but over a 5 year period, the program with more 4 and 5 star recruits is going to be a better program- unless they have an incompetent coach. It's simple math/facts/numbers. If we want to beat Miami - that now has a legit coach and not Randy Shannon- we are going to have to recruit -much better- Even 2018- than we are now. No other way around it.

Dude... Have you seen the number of WRs they've brought in? They're selling the farm to land their top RB Target.

IT'S YEAR TWO.

Breathe.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Let me know which ones Corn and Vice have recruited.

This team has plenty of WRs on the roster. I'd love one that can catch, spread the field, or even get open, for that matter though.

It doesn't matter if it's year two. We're still getting steamrolled in big games and recruiting isn't improving. We have a G5 offensive coaching staff who is coaching and recruiting largely like a G5 staff.

and recruiting isn't improving

Lolwut

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Well our class last year was nothing to write home about, and was on par with average Beamer classes. This year will be lower rated when everything is said and done.

Not sure why that constitutes as anything other than 'not improving'

So what's your recommendation?

I don't really understand all the bitching and moaning ad nauseum. At this point it is what it is. Too soon to expect a great deal of change. Just need to have some patience and see where it goes. If 4-5 years into the Fuente era doesn't bring the consistent improvement we need, then we can have a discussion.

Also, everyone needs to join the Hokie Club and donate.

It's too soon to expect change? What?? It's too soon to expect that we're ready to play in a big game? Is it too soon to expect our offense to not come out flat? Is it too soon to expect any marginal improvement in recruiting over the average Beamer year?

When are we allowed to expect those things? 5 years? Come on, man.

I am a Hokie Club member, and do donate

Don't understand the down votes but...

I think the staff deserves to have their second class become at least sophomores before we pass final judgment. Hard to expect his first class to be indicative of the recruiting potential. Hard to expect true freshman to contribute meaningfully.

My opinion may be the minority but yes, I'm giving Fuente five years before I determine whether or not I'm buying what he's selling.

I agree that the big game losses are frustrating. But I don't believe it's a culture thing now. We just don't have the depth of talent yet.

Have a leg for obviously being passionate and generous with your funds.

Frank Beamer took 7 years, I believe, before he had a winning season. Fu took us to 10 wins his first season. Im not saying hes any better than Beamer, I'm just saying relax. That's your choice to donate, that doesn't make you any more right or wrong than the rest of us fans.

UT PROSIM

We won 10 games last year with decent talent on the roster, yes. Getting Evans certainly helped salvage our season. However, I think it's totally fair to expect an increase in talent replenishment on the roster and improvement in mindset and coaching ability if we're serious about becoming a national contender.

Waiting 7 years to pass judgement isn't going to happen, nor should it. College Football, nor Virginia Tech aren't what they were when CFB took over in the 1980s.

Dude, we can still win 10 (or gasp, 11) games this year. Only 2 teams make to the ACCCG and only 4 team make it to the CFP.

Not sure why you think this one loss in and of itself constitutes a step back.

As far as talent replenishment goes, the Juniors and Seniors (and r-Sophomores) were not recruited by this regime. Most freshman are not ready to play P5 football when they walk onto campus, even with an early enrollment.

Before the season, most reasonable fans expected 9-3 or 8-4 with a topside of 10-2. All of that is still on the table (and likely.)

Beamer took over a program that was on probation, not in a conference, and had never played a home night game in history and went to 2 bowls all time to that point. He had no Merriman center, and shared lockers with olympic sports teams. Lane was 50K capacity with high school lights. Fuente took over a top 3 ACC program from a hall of fame coach, that even in their "down" years at the end, recruited in the top 30. He took over a 95% full stadium with luxury suites, one of the best fan bases in America, first class facilities, and was able to keep Bud Foster. Yes, he needs to get "his" players for his system in there, and he has done a fantastic job thus far. I think it is fair to expect slightly more "uptick" in recruiting though, given his resources. But give him 4 years and if he is not "competitive" with Miami and Clemson, etc. then be concerned if we are not top 15 in recruiting.

Tre will be here next year and Caleb will be back next year Hoping to get Jacoby in the 2019 class I'm looking forward towards our receiving core

The playcalling in the first half of the West Virginia, Clemson, and Miami games this year has been so bad and illogical that no amount of inexperience or poor execution excuses it.

Oh but they are. Had the right thing in mind. Just went about it aaalllllll wrong.

Hokie Love!

The parts aren't there yet.

Fucking shit this comment has it's own thread now! Hot damn!

This game was there for the taking. We just couldn't take it.

Hats off to the defense, they put us in position to win.

Hope this stings like hell for the offense. These are the losses that teams learn from.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

I'm perfectly fine if we lay it all out on the line and get beat. Sometimes the other team is just better. But in the two biggest games of the year we've hardly been able to find out because of how conservative the play calling has been. And would we have won if it hadn't? Who knows, because the freshmen absolutely played like freshmen tonight but I'd sure like to find that out before the second half

I would like to nominate this as comment of the year

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

This. Instead of hiding in our shell for the first 30 minutes and trying not to lose, we should unzip, lay it out on the table, and fucking dare Clemson, Miami, and whoever else to measure up. I gained a lot of respect for WVU's football program this year and win or lose its fun watching them play. They go after it from the first kickoff and let Will Grier open up and sling the rock. Significantly less of this bubble screen left, bubble screen right, jet sweep left, tailback screen right, 5 yard out route 3 yards short of the first down offense.

I'm much happier losing games like these against stronger competition than losing games that we have no business losing to mediocre squads. I'll tell you that much.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Do you really think miami was that much better? Faster, yes! Better overall? No.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

I second that

Hokie Love!

I meant stronger relative to some of the opponents we've lost to recently. The point is we've managed to avoid the patented VT WTF loss so far this season.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Sadly, friend, the season is not over so please knock on some wood and buy some lucky rabbits foot and find some four leaf clovers. Sprinkling salt over the left shoulder wouldn't hurt either you know. Also, never play blackjack with a man named jack. ;-)

Seriously though, if we lose to either LOLUVa or GT, ugh....

Go Hokies!

Young, not as talented, injured lineman, played on the road...

A lot of factors against us and I figured this would happen. Only Fu's 2nd year and this was supposed to be rebuilding. Damn right I'm mad we lost but, I'm keeping it in perspective. I'm going to stay patient

Keep calm, Gobble on

If you consider that if we failed two fourth down conversions on the 32 and 34 yard line + fumbled in the redzone and still were in the game till the last Rozier TD, I don't think it was that bad a loss. Miami is a good team, they executed better, obviously their defense heavily outplayed our offense and their offense got some big plays. Tough loss but a lot to learn from. Also we might want to start playing games in the first quarter instead of with 5 minutes left in the 2nd one.

I just want to win a big game against a team that is actually good.

That game didn't mean shit man we lost to ECU the week after it. Everyone holds that game high on a pedastal when it didn't do a damn thing for us other than give us one win toward a bowl that season.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Actual picture of the O-Line. They really missed having Njman (spelling?) out there tonight.

I criticize knowing full well I could never do what these athletes do.

Great. In the off chance that there happen to be any Wahoos as members of this site, this photo would be considered porn for them and ZERO DOUBT they are jacking off to the pic this instant.

I was going to make a Jarlsberg joke here, but after reconsidering I will pass.

I see the O-line being a big problem if we don't improve our recruiting in that area. You aren't going to go far with these so called "projects"

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

And by projects you mean TE/QBs converted to tackles?

I know you are being a little sarcastic but yes indeed. Recruit guys that play O-line and are projected to play O-line, and to the ACC caliber.

We are not going to get guys we need who have an offer from us and then the likes of ODU, App St, Marshall, Elon, Coastal Carolina, etc. sure there are few who fly under the radar due to location/injury.... but when you have an offer list like that from beginning to the end, its says something to the talent of the kid.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Welp, at least were not gonna get our ass as smoked by Clemson for the millionth time.

Can't end the losing streak if we don't play them

Free Hugh

French has been talking for weeks about how we don't have someone that can take the top off a defense and it showed tonight. Miami played really close to the line and had no fear of anybody beating them deep.

Miami has a real coach now. Richt recruits and coaches well. They are going to finally be players for the Coastal every year like they were supposed to be.

All that being said, I think we're really young and will hopefully be a lot better over the next year or two. This year we're just too green at too many important positions on offense to really be a great team.

I don't think a burner would have made a difference tonight. JJ was getting hammered, no time to throw deep.

We put the K in Kwality

When he had time to throw deep, he didn't get the ball where it needed to be.

If you have a threat that needs to be seriously considered, they wouldn't be able to load the box and play press coverage. They played a lot of cover 0 tonight and put the extra guys in the box. If we have some one who could take the top of the D, they would have to keep a safety back in coverage. That's one less man to account for in the running game. And perhaps its a bigger cushion in the passing game.

1. Is this "fractured but whole" saying gonna become a TKP meme?

2. Super frustrating loss. Stings. Sucks. But it happens (seemingly to us a lot...) and we'll be better for it. Recall that loss to a certain team with a certain quarterback in 07 (hint: fuck ratt myan)? It stung and shouldn't have happened but the team learned from it.

3. Any wagers on how long it takes for someone to call for Fu's head? We already have the "blame the shitty refs as opposed to execution" thread.

Silver linings time....

Miami gets shelled by ND next week and by Clemson in the ACC title game and we should finish the year as the 2nd highest ranked ACC team and as such, assuming the champion goes to the playoff, we get the NY6 bowl

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I'd be cool with this^^^

Seems like the team that loses the ACC Championship would be the second highest rated ACC team.

Also, are you forgetting Notre Dame's ACC bowl tie ins?

I believe this assumes ND goes to the playoff which is more than likely going to happen given the teams they play down the stretch. Also we lost the ACC championship and went to the Belk bowl while FSU and Louisville wen to the Orange and Citrus respectively which I believe are above Belk. Isn't it about overall finishing so say Clemson goes to the playoff, we'd have to worry about Miami and possibly NC St. finishing above us. However, obligatory let's go 1-0 in Atlanta.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Seems like the team that loses the ACC Championship would be the second highest rated ACC team.

How did that work out for us last year?

Also, are you forgetting Notre Dame's ACC bowl tie ins?

Those don't kick in until we get to the Camping World Bowl. They're competing with the SEC and BIg Ten to get into the Orange Bowl, not the ACC.

Not to be an ass, but as someone who is getting gunshy of VT playing in front of the bright lights and national audience, I'd be nervous about playing in a NY6 bowl right now.

Every silver lining has a touch of grey... - Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

But, one of the NY6 spots is for a G5 team, and it's most likely going to be the Peach Bowl, which is scheduled for 12:30 on New Year's Day. If VT makes a NY6, then that would be a favorable destination.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm all about traveling to warm locations and getting bourboned up for a college football game, especially on New Years. I just think expectations for this team in a prime time game should be tempered. They will be for me.

Got to recruit skill players and o-line.... Cam, Travon, and Teller are gone next year. Things are only going to get worse.

Fuente's success thus far has come entirely on the backs of Beamer era recruits.

Y'all do realize that Fuente has just one recruiting class under his belt correct? It's not as if those players can be game changers in year one as true freshmen, there are very few recruits who can do that.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Travon is a junior.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Ok. My biggest concern: who, aside from Savoy, is ready to be an every-down receiver next year?? Cam, Murphy, Clark, Carroll are all gone. An already weak position gets much weaker.

Farley

Farley wasn't even a WR in high school. He's coming off a serious injury and new to the position.

You can only put so much stock into what beat reporters write about during camp. If you could, Hekaziah Grimsley would be All-ACC, not a guy who's caught 2 balls all season.

Saw him during the spring game. He looked great. So there's reason for that optimism.

Yeah..he played well in a scrimmage. If we're serious about competing for a conference championship it would be a little more reassuring if an answer to 'who is going to replace xxxx on offense' wasn't a guy who is new at the position who 'looked good in a spring game.' (and is coming off a serious knee injury)

I watched the spring game and saw farley first hand...
Was the absolute best athlete on the field by far

Murphy and Carroll are juniors as well.

Don't forget about Hazelton.

Murphy not gone sir

Carroll should be back next year, but does anyone know why he hasn't been getting reps/targeted very often at all this year? He seems to have good hand and speed. Without his big play last year we lose to ND. I don't see why he isn't #2 behind Cam.

Free Hugh

I would like for someone who payed closer attention to answer this (and it will probably be discussed in the film review....

But did it seem to anyone else like TS4 and RW8 got into the backfield a lot early and then did a vanishing act? Gameplan? Tactics? Tired? Holding? No idea here because I wasn't paying specific attention to it at the time, just struck me now.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Considering their combined weight is like 640 pounds, I'm gonna go with tired. We need backup DTs of approximately the same talent to be an elite 4 quarter defense.

Maybe French will include the number of times 54 missed his gap assignment behind the DL in his review write up, as 2 of miamis TDs were directly on him. 4 and 8 got penetration plenty but there was no LB behind them, ever.

Seemed like every replay of a run that gashed us, Ricky and Tim were being held like crazy, in slow motion.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I don't remember any holding calls against them either. Seems to be par for the course this year. Have to be most held guys every week.

Only call against Miami's line was the chop block call, which was a good call.

It should be noted that we weren't called for any holding either as far as I can remember.

Hard to hold when you can't get a hand on the pass rushers

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

They may have been consistent in this, but that worked to Miami's advantage more than ours.

Stars matter

Using /s is for cowards.

No one gonna mention the two fourth downs we went for it instead of kicking field goals? They would have been deep but Slye already crushed one that would have been good from 800 yds. 4th and 2 and it is 10-14 at that point. Would have been about a 51 yd attempt, but we go for it and lose 9 yds. That turned the whole game right there in my opinion

We weren't gonna win this with field goals.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Didn't think we would, but Slye literally hit from that same distance before half and if he does it again we are one point behind and change field position. Instead we lose momentum and they go down and score and the game is pretty much over at that point.

Expecting Slye to hit from that distance (or any distance more than an XP, really) is like expecting UVA to beat Tech.

The fact that he even did it once in this game was a miracle.

I still like the decision. Execution of the playcall left a lot to be desired. Joey is not great from distance. If we had attempted the FG and missed (probable) everyone would have been say we should have gone for it given that Joey isn't good from over 50.

Maybe we should switch to Adidas?

Maybe not enough to drink, or too much. Just not sure.

Beats the hell out of wallowing in it and blasting incoherent all caps forum posts into the void.

Pleasure. Glad to have been a small part of it (with special thx to Matt Stone and Trey Parker).

I'm not starting rumors, I seen it on the Twitter (I'm not any good at this techy shit, so no embed) but. Chris Coleman just retweeted that someone seen JJ walking out of the stadium in a boot

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

That qualifies as unsubstantiated rumor, but is an interesting data point.

I mean, I did cite my source, kind of... It wasn't TKP style or anything special...... half credit?

I'm not worried. Could be a precautionary measure. Nothing against JJ but I feel good about our back up!

Going to feel weird watching a game in Atlanta during the day.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Great. Welcome to irrelevancy.

Saw it with Clemson, saw it tonight, this team just isn't ready to compete at a high level. The sharpness and execution isn't there consistently enough to win these games. That goes for players AND coaches.

The playcalling in this game was pretty poor. Yeah, the players were sloppy at times on offense but they were set up to fail. We kept using motion in the run game to set up big plays that never came. It was just motion, motion, motion. Miami kept loading up the box and we just kept ramming it ahead. We never challenged them. It's like we'd get tricked by a big run early in the possession, thinking this is working, and then run it 3 more times and get stuffed. Miami called their game right; aggressive mix of vertical throws and runs. We did that at the end of the first half, saw very good success and never did it again. The situational play calling was really bad. The botched pitch was a bad play call from the start. Then there's the bad snap that hit Savoy. It's 4th and a long 2 and you line up in a shotgun? WHY ARE YOU MAKING IT HARDER? And before that play call, it was 3rd and 5 and they run straight into an 8 man box for minimal gain. JJ did well passing the ball earlier this season. Trust him. Get creative in getting receivers open through formations (screens, moving pocket, etc). GET CAM PHILLIPS THE BALL. Just not a good effort at all on offense. They had a plan, it didn't work, and made no adjustments.

Defense got lit up. It's hard to say 3 INTs are misleading but they kinda are. When Miami needed plays, it got them, easily. Tackling was terrible. Very poor job keeping tabs on Rosier. GT is gonna light our ass up if we come with that kind of tackling.

It sucks especially since we were poised for contention (possibly even playoffs with how things are going), but we just aren't ready as a team. There's still a good ways to go.

This is where I think Loeffler's triangle offense route tree for setting up the wide receivers work well with not as talented WR group. It would be nice if Fuente/Cornelsen could incorporate that for the WRs instead of just pre-snap motions.

We've jumped the shark. We're reaching back to Loeffler for ideas for the offense.

I'm not trying to pick on you, I just think it's funny. Leg.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I don't like HOW we lost tonight. I don't think as many people were as upset after last year's ACCCG because even though we made some mistakes we at least played like we knew WTF we were doing. Played like MEN, in other words. Tonight we played more like we were just plain not prepared.

Look, we are playing with a Red-Shirt Freshman at the QB spot. He was eventually going to have these moments this season. Call them experiences that he will use, I hope, to learn from and grow as a QB. Before the season started, did anyone honestly think we would be this good sitting with only two loses? Be honest friends, I always figured we would lose the Clemson game and one other ACC Coastal game. Now let's hope the teams recovers and beat GT and LOLUVa. As always, Go Hokies!

Go Hokies!

And Pitt. We always need to see more of this.

Fuck Nardouche!

Does this headset make me look puzzled?

You know, I just completely forgot about Pitt! Yikes! +1 for the reminder, Pitt, oh Pitt.

Go Hokies!

What are you talking about? JJ did his thing. It was the oline failing to block, the receivers not getting open, and the coaches showing scared and unprepared.

“I remember Lee Corso's car didn't get out of the parking lot.” -cFB
TKPC #666 ...man that was long wait...

I get losing to this team, on the road, at night, in prime time, etc. That shit happens, we're Hokies — that's how these games go most of the time for us. But what I can't fucking stand is looking like a bunch of scared lost children out there while doing so. It was as if the coaches took the script from the Clemson game and said, "hey that experience was terrible. Let's do that exact same thing again so everyone can relive that nightmare all over! Neat!"

From the YUGE busts in defense to an offense whose only identity is the inability to move the ball more than nine yards during almost every series in the first quarter and a half, it was the exact same fucking game as Clemson. A painful dick kicking from start to finish. A team to young and timid for the big stage shows up in O&M yet again.

And what really hurts is watching (some of) these kids absolutely laying it on the line on every damn play while others, namely our shitfuck offensive line, play like absolute ass.

But I have a silver lining in this evening's facefucking, and it's that we should be so happy that Braxton Berrios didn't score 50 points singlehandedly tonight because if he would've had an insane game (like we typically give up to guys like him in games like this), I really think that Herbstreit and Fowler's dicks would have just exploded like hot dogs left in the microwave for too long. The two of them were way beyond fully torqued in the crotchal region due to turnover chains, J-Lo and AROD, and shots of sweaty Manny Diaz giving obvious "air jerkoff" signs to the defense. Had Berrios done more than score just the one TD, well let's just say that some poor ESPN intern would be forced to blot up exploded bits of broadcaster dickmeat in the press box of Hard Rock stadium tonight.

You gotta sunny-side these things, guys!

I felt like I noticed at least a dozen high snaps tonight, including on the two fumble plays. What's the deal there?

Oh, also

DOES ANYBODY ELSE HATE JLO NOW?

*thinks*

She's a Miami fan...

*looks at JLo*

Dat ass doe

Nope. Still like her

JLo loves the turnover chain.

Meh. She's attractive for sure but her acting and singing was never anything to write home about.

I will say this game reaffirmed my belief that Arod is a tool. And Miami may have more bandwagon fans than anyone else in the nation.

Can't embed the tweet, but did anyone else see the video of the drunk Miami fan girl being "escorted" out of the stadium? Wow...

No how would I find it

Edit: holy shit! Wasn't it also a Hurricanes fan who punched an older dude in the face at a game earlier this season?

Thanks!

I needed this thread, just to remind me that we're only in year two. I don't know if Fu will ever recruit like one of the blue bloods, but I also remember a lot of people on this site saying that year two would be a down year, and here we were 4 games away from the end of the season in a game that would've gotten us in the top 10, and in a pole position to compete for a CFP spot. Our OL needs more talent, we need more speed at the skill positions, and we need to stop putting the entire game on the defenses back every single big game. At some point we have to save the defense in a high profile game.

Also, the coaching staff seriously sharted in the bed, no question about it, they were ultra conservative, and Bud wasn't nearly aggressive enough. We'll learn from this, and I hope the coaches walk away from this game saying, not only do the players have to be prepared, but the coaches do as well. These kids are following them, and they have to carry that swag, that we are always right where we want to be. No the field goals wouldn't have saved us, but they would've put us in reach for sure, for instance that one 4th down we went for, was when we were only down 11, we go for that field goal and make it, it's a 8 point/one possession game; decisions like that I put straight at the feet of the coaches. Slye showed us on that 50 yarder he was ready to kick the hell out of the ball if needed tonight and the coaches took that opportunity away. We need to lick our wounds, finish strong, and hopefully show these recruits that they are the difference from us competing and not competing. Hopefully as December and February approaches, BAG has some good sauces info on tap, we'll go into the bowl season, finish strong, and work towards next season. This season isn't over thought and our boys need us, let's sleep off the frustration, and get back behind our team, and hope the entire team including the coaches and fans learn from this game. There's a good ways to go, settle in. And as always, GO HOKIES!

Man I'm pissed and drunk as hell but so glad we got a great family of Hokies out here. Next year we're gonna win the whole damn thing. Tremaine and Alexander better stay HOME

Just like many of you I've been a Hokie forever. I remember when we began the climb from mid major (or whatever you want to call it) to a legitimate contender. CFB gave us all this opportunity to even be here complaining about not winning the big games by taking us to the National spotlight. But somewhere down the road of life the fire went out there or whatever you want to call it. I was sooo frustrated the last few years of the Beamer era just as many of you. I remember thinking we were doomed to be the bridesmaid that someone, somewhere, several fingers of bourbon ago mentioned in another thread. In spite of an earlier post of mine and given some time to go look at some things (record at Memphis/TCU, offensive stats) I have reaffirmed my faith in the Fuente staff. No I don't like conservative play calling and no I don't think we did the best job that could be done to win the game but I do believe the current coaching staff has a plan and I feel like we need to give that time. This loss sucks and sucks bad. It's heartbreaking and demoralizing and I'm pissed but I do believe we have a coach that's in it to win a championship and who's not just looking for this to be a stepping stone to another gig. To me that's big. Let's hang in there, calm down, drink the last of this fine nectar that has doused the dumpster fires in our souls and have some confidence in the future. We may not win the big one now but I've seen it a lot worse and I certainly wasn't expecting to be where we are in the first two years.

Maybe the tame play calling is directly related to the lack of talent. We struggled executing some of our basic plays tonight, not sure getting crazy would have helped.

Defense is consistent on tackling inconsistencies.

The refs game plan was definitely to let it play out. Recall one glaring spot where you can see Hill say WTF when they spotted the ball yards past first down marker.

Overall I'm still excited about the future. Sill overachieving at this point. Gotta get to 10 reg season wins.

I'm just super sad, man. This sucks. But oh well, on to week. ....which is likely not a prime time spot. (Thank God)

I can't even pretend like i don't still love my Hokies...as I sit here in Hokies pajamas, a Hokie beanie, and taking shots of bourbon from my Hokie shot glass

Let's finish out the year strong. Go Hokies.

Good call.

It's times like these when I wish I had Hokie pajamas.

Seems like people on here forget that 10-2 is a great year, and we're winning again baby. Still proud of this season and let's beat Chinballs, the Nardouche, and the biggest douchebags of them all by 40+.

We may not have gotten where we wanted but we can still have a great season and take out our anger on some of the teams we love to hate most

It's pretty simple. We recruit at a rank 25 level. Coaching will only get you so far. We cannot keep up with the heavyweights if college football with recruiting at that level. Dreams of going to the playoffs are just that-dreams. Miami have found their footing and Clemson/FSU are recruiting at elite levels.

The ACCCG is our ceiling until that improves.

The winner of Miami/ND appears to be in good form for playoff. Miami was better than we were, and the game was just about as close as the score indicated.

Onto GT/Pitt/LOLUVA. Three winnable games, hopefully we get all of them.

Slow starts are still the demon we must overcome. I don't know where the fix is for that, it's been a problem for awhile. Hell maybe years.

We are 7-2 with a young offense in year two of the Fuente era. This loss was bad, but not the end of the world. Go Hokies! Finish strong, 10 wins is still a possibility and that's pretty good all things considered, you couldn't say that 2 years ago.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

This was straight up execution and coaching.

Offensive coordinator did nothing to stem the rush and Continued to take hours to develop a run.

Just like old times the backs are getting the ball going east and west. There is no punch in the running game when the play is 2 seconds in and the back still doesn't have the ball.

The defense was up to it's old tricks again.
Massively bad tackles and overpursuit. Bud needs to rush but stay shallow to avoid the QB run.

By the end, Miami was able to do whatever it wanted.

This one was all lack of coaching.

Yes players need to play, but need to be given a chance.

Gobble Gobble!

Tough to execute when you aren't as big, fast, strong, or athletic as your opponent. Miami recruits like a a top 10 team. Now that they have decent coaching they actually play like a top 10 team. Virginia Tech recruits like a top 25 team. The game I watched showed a big talent discrepancy. Yes VT is still developing a lot of youth but Miami is developing theirs too.

Nothing else to say really...
Just don't read anything by Heather Dinich this week after that game and you'll be ok

Fuente is doing the best with what he's got. Which is a thin receiving Corp that if a DB is even a couple feet within their vicinity they drop a pass. Bud's scheme's Achilles heel is the dual threat QB. This is the time that if you are pissed and aren't part of the Hokie Club, you need to join today!

In College Football your team is never as good as you think it is when beating up on lesser opponents or as bad as it looks when things go wrong. I get why we have to have these threads to exercise some demons but whoa nelly lets calm down and acknowledge this is a 9-3 team probably. Where did ya'll think those 3 losses were going to come from when the year started? Trust the process.

What's disappointing me the most right now is not the team at all. This is not a playoff caliber team and we don't recruit high enough to have these kind of meltdowns over losing to Top 10 programs. Miami showed last night that annually bringing in elite classes will eventually pay off. They are now the program to beat in the Coastal and they aren't going anywhere. If we want to play for the conference title again, were going to have to earn it by legitimately being elite. We aren't this year, but that is changing and we will be soon.

What gets me the most about this site right now, and the fanbase in general, as we had a couple people like this at the bar last night, is that it seems like there are a very vocal few who have just been waiting all year to take out the knives to butcher this team as if we are the ones going 1-7 like UNC. If you aren't happy with how this team has been playing this year and last after what we saw from 2012-2015, I wonder if you'll ever be able to enjoy watching this team play again.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

After watching that game last night, you're disappointed in the fan base?

lol

The real deal is that yes, Miami has been recruiting at a high level, and this year's class is a beast. They also have a good coach. So part of the disappointment is seeing that Miami is, in fact, bak. But they weren't perfect. VT stopped them from scoring when they played four downs from first and goal. That required talent, coaching, and execution.

The other disappointment is that VT didn't play as well as they're capable of last night. Things that we know they've gotten away with in other games came back to haunt them last night. There are weaknesses in the offensive line and offensive identity, combined with a quarterback who isn't executing all that fast (yet), and a defense with some holes. We can't say they're completely undisciplined, but they did make some mistakes, and Miami was able to exploit those.

Meanwhile, Miami didn't play mistake-free ball either. They did manage to get some lucky breaks, including refs who called Pass Interference but not holding (this works for Miami's game better than ours), and one inexplicable call for getting faked out too well at a critical point in the game. Miami had some turnovers, but VT didn't capitalize on them. For some reason, the bread and butter plays failed us on execution. Not talent, but the inability to pitch and catch, or to time a snap.

We shouldn't beat up the fan base too much. They fell for the ratings hype. One of those teams played like a top 10 team, and one did not. One team seemed to get all the breaks, and one did not. Miami was fast, but I don't believe that VT doesn't have any talent. VT isn't playing at peak efficiency. There were some huge mental errors that cost big plays.

VT isn't going to be able to out-talent Miami, but VT didn't lose last night due to a lack of talent. If VT eliminates the mistakes (out of position, missed coverage, turnovers, miscues, completely predictable playcalling) that's a completely different game last night. VT can win that game.

It's ridiculous to come down too hard on either the coaching staff or the players, as they have gotten us this far. But this game was a wake up call that improvements are needed if you hope to beat Miami, not just in recruiting, but in execution.

Fans absolutely shouldn't bash the coaches or the players. But fans also shouldn't make the mistake of pretending that VT isn't a pretty talented team. You don't get to 7-2 in the ACC without some pretty good coaching and players. Without better execution, though, you don't go to the ACC championship game.

Agree with 90% of this.

VT had better match Miami's talent then. Because there isn't some great coaching disparity anymore. If folks are expecting the team to 'blue-collar' its way to victory these days, it's going to make for some long winters.

Yeah VT works hard, so do the players and coaches across the field.

I get the sense that a significant chunk of the fanbase (aside from those who just want to complain) refuses to acknowledge the importance of recruiting and how's it's changed from the 90s and early aughts. Back then we were recruiting unheralded 3 star players that would be 4 and 5 star top 250 guys today. It seems people expect Fuente and Foster to win games by out coaching other programs with a squad full of players who were their third, fourth, or walk-on choice during recruiting. Meanwhile programs like Miami, FSU, and Clemson are stacking the roster with the guys VT really wanted.

Yep. We can harp on the mistakes the team makes til we're blue in the face, but the fact remains we just don't recruit well enough to consistently win these kinds of games. In fact, a large part of recruiting rankings takes into account how mistake prone players can be, so we really shouldn't be surprised at all to see the kind of mistakes we have been seeing. Sometimes, no amount of coaching is going to break bad engrained hahits, especially from a team with the kind of youth this one has.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I don't think there is any part of the fan base who doesn't understand that you want to recruit the best players you can.

So blasting other fans with "See, I TOLD you we should have recruited better" isn't all that helpful. There's a certain negativity towards our coaches and players in that sentiment that I find unappealing.

Recruiting is important, but is certainly not the only component. Every weekend we see teams with higher rated players losing. (See: FSU, and Ohio State yesterday)

Some teams, like VT, generally punch above their weight class. I believe the strategy is to punch above your weight class and coach up your talent, while attracting even better players.

Recruiting is the ONLY thing keeping this program from winning championships (or at least regularly competing for them). Not coaching, not one play here, one play there need to coach 'em up better can't miss assignments, bad play calls, etc...

Recruiting.

Everything else is in place.

I don't think there is anyone in the fan base who doesn't understand the value of recruiting, and I agree that VT has a lot of the other components in place.

If you find a fan who doesn't get that recruiting is important, bring him here and we'll straighten him right out.

I'm saying that there were fixable mistakes in that game last night.

There are always fixable mistakes. No game is perfect. Talent overcomes or recovers from those mistakes to win games.

VT has talent.

Therefore, VT will win future games.

I've never felt better about VT football than I have this year, even after watching that disaster last night.

As far as repeating over and over that recruiting is important, nobody is disagreeing with that.

I try to avoid most posts after a loss as a couple people will always lose their shit. My thoughts on the game.

The defense needs to figure how to tackle we had way to many broken tackles in the backfield that the Miami players either bounced off or ran through. Good position was eliminated by bad tackling. The defense doesn't get a pass.

The offensive play calling has to get better in bigger games. We went way to conservative and it was a problem from the very beginning when we opened with 9 runs and 1 pass. We are not GT. Their were some bad snaps and plays that went wrong. It happens we are playing a lot of freshmen.

Officiating, one sided yes, but it didn't cost us the game. We cost us the game. The personal foul on Floyd was horrible but predictable, in today's game you aren't allowed to hit a qb hard apparently even if he is faking the ball. The PI's early on Alexander were also aimed to send a message.

Lastly, Miami played four quarters like a top 10 team. They executed on offense and defense, I feel sick typing this, but they were the better team last night. Miami if they continue to play at that level will be the ACC champion not just the coastal champion.

That said, we need to put it behind us and beat GT. Go Hokies

People act like the first drives were 3 and outs. Miami came into the game garbage at run defense. We don't have the skill players to suddenly turn into a run and gun offense not to mention that's not Fuente's philosophy. We are going to run the ball, period.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

VT was 5th in total offensive plays in 2016, ranked 45th in rushing yards and 21 in passing yards. 59/41 pass/run

Most obvious D issues as a unit was tackling. Specifically speaking, I started to hone in on Moto. He looked every part of him 2 years ago. He consistently shifted to one side and seemingly right into the lineman's route to seal him off the middle, opening up a gargantuan hole for big plays to happen. Not here and there, but consistently. Outside of this, I thought the D did well.

Well maybe it's good I missed thisbdue to a wedding. Oh well, into the next one!

I think things are beginning to taper off.
