You really think 10 win seasons didn't improve recruiting or national perception? We were considered a top 10-15 program. Do you think we would've had that perception if we were winning 7 or 8 games a year? Like we were from 2012-2015?
You really need to have some perspective. There are ~130 other teams in college football, many of whom have fan bases who contribute much more financially than we do. Despite that, we came out of nowhere in the mid 90s and have been punching above our weight class for decades. Fuente is gonna take us to the promised land, but we're gonna have to be patient.

I don't know if it's just our receivers failing to get open sooner or Jackson taking too long to make his reads but it seems like he's been holding the ball for way too long the past 3 games.
This offense is so slow guys don't have to finish work outs or be in great cardiovascular shape to play in this offense we take so long to get set up and ready. This is way different than what was advertised when Fuente first got to Va Tech. Jackson is way to sloooooooooooow when he tries to run. I hope this isn't a 7-5 year...

You watching the game? No run game, no ability to get td's, not a "aerial attack" or "fast pace offense" just pathetic get to the red zone and break down offense.
And none of that points to kids being slow or not completing conditioning.
Then why take so long to get set up on offense? We are way too predictable on offense, I hope the defense and special teams show up or we won't be in the game long. Field goals keep you in it for the first quarter unless you are playing a weak team. The offense is in trouble and you have to see that.
And I know they complete conditioning but under the last coaching staff apparently the kids didn't have to complete conditioning or work outs. My point is that now that they do complete work outs and conditioning what has changed? We are no faster out there on offense, the o-line doesn't open up bigger holes to give us a running game. We looked the same when the guys apparently didn't have to complete work outs or conditioning under the last staff. We outscore FCS and group of 5 teams badly as well as weak ACC teams but better ACC teams expose us.
Mediocre punt coverage on that one.
This type of performance from the team will not win the game. Do better.

Holston is just not ready to be in the game. He's timid and can't make people miss.
Holston is a one cut type of back. He's not going to make a lot of guys miss in the open field. Unfortunately with no OL, it's hard to be an effective North-south runner.
He doesn't show any speed or explosiveness to be a zone type runner.

Its a combination of o-line blocking and play calling.... just look that most recent one... why they keep throwing the fade to Cam who is only 6 feet tall baffles me.... two times so far this game it has miserably failed. If he was like 6'3" or taller, then most would be ok with it.
The three playcalls on 2nd/3rd/4th and 2 were straight trash. Will they work with better execution? Sure, but not lining up under center and running a QB sneak on 4th and 2 is bullshit.

French already pointed out that Vice doesn't teach proper pad attack technique last year. The oline can get away with not attacking the correct inside/outside shoulder against inferior talent but once you're facing equal or better talent, technique is everything.

It's not that so much as how he's been used. You can't put him in without letting him throw a few passes. Otherwise, it's an obvious tell to your playcall. I don't mind Bush coming in as a change up, but it could be executed much better. Let him even have a whole series.

1:03 to drive 97 yds, meaning they gotta pass the ball/risk incomplete passes and having to punt out of the endzone. The other two I agree with, but with the way the half has gone, just get to halftime.
1. I have no problem with getting Bush on the field, he opens the game up. HOWEVER, it's how they've used him that's head scratching. If they want to use him, you have to set up the option by showing that he can/will throw. Honestly not very concerned about it right now.
2. Yeah that was stupid. No real need for it. Take the PAT and move on. Also should have taken the short field goal instead of going for it on 4th. Leaving points on the field (especially easy points) against GT will kill you.
3. Given field position I don't really mind this either. Get into the locker room, make adjustments, rally the troops. Don't give the Bees a short field because our offense has stalled yet again.
I liked his aggressiveness last year. I suppose it's one of those situations when you look like a genius when you get it, but an idiot when you don't.
Personally though, I think it's clear by this point in the season we can't win these "3/4th and short" situations at will like we could last season, and we shouldn't be playing like it.
This offensive line is pathetic, there's no way around it. I know we're recruiting all these great skill players, but I'm not sure we're going to have the guys inside to let them operate. I cringe thinking what we have out there right now is the best we can field....48 rushing yards in the first half, ugh!

To be fair to Bud, he had them in a punt fake defense. Our tackler made contact behind the 1st down marker and got drug through past the marker. It happens, but I was very frustrated by that play as well.

When we lose big games and look like we aren't worthy of being top 25, somehow recruiting is magically going to save us.

Play calling is NOT the issue. This is execution. Horrible blocking and poor tackling. There may be some predictability but we can't make anybody miss.
Personally I think the defense is playing great, they're going to miss some tackles here and there against a team like this. The concern I'm feeling is whether the offense can muster enough to strike back.

2 - why do all of our backs look slow as shit? I know they have some speed but it's like the hesitate so long before they pick a hole, and then they can't outrun anyone because they've let everything close up.

Actually, the line is fine in short yardage under center, especially with Bush under center. It's much easier to block forward than pass block. This is stubborn coaches. We had size advantage across the line.

As crappy as the players were at (most) times, we still would've win the game if it wasn't for stupid (Fuente not taking the points/Cornelson's play calling in critical situations) and arrogant(Bud playing cover two on the third and long TD) coaching.
Offensive play calling is straight fucking hog shit. not that 1 play can really be the flag bearer since the whole game was terrible but 1 yard, 1 yard. And we chuck it. Fantastic.
Again. Our special teams and defense kept us in this game. Strange how Beamerballesque that game was. Offense absolutely inept. Bummer. Big bummer. But not really unexpected. Our record until Miami had everyone hyped out, probably without good reason.

The D had some great plays to help mitigate the disastrous ones.

I primarily blame them for five points we left on the field (FG and two XPs) as a FG then would have won us the game at the end. We've done this all season.
As to the playcalling, the plays were there (I guess). Not an Xs and Os guy (will wait on film review), the 3rd and 1, JJ pass was off. The 4th and 1, the throw was right there, in Cam's chest, just a really nice play by the defender. if not for that arm in there, Cam comes down with TD and we celebrate the aggressive play calling.

Up until that 3rd and 4th down I've been fine with called plays but doing that twice nope. I'm fine if you do it on first down right after you convert to try and catch them off. But gotta get the first there. I'd even have understood a short throw to try and pick it up on 3rd but not fade and then throw to end zone.
Especially when every fade in at least the past few games has landed closer to the front row than the receiver. That third down call was the single worst play call this season. Let's dial up a pass that our qb hasn't been able to make yet! They'll never guess!

Not defending the playcalling on those last two plays, but just trying to think of some sort of explanation (even if it's not a good one). The only thing I can think of is that maybe Cornelson tested something on the 3rd down and something looked really open/vulnerable, but GT adjusted correctly when Cornelson tried to go there on 4th down. Still really sad that we can't trust our OL enough to pound out 1 yard in two attempts...
We continue to try the ONE option play, one receiver, one option, don't look for or even send a second receiver... uggh.

The offensive coaches do not trust the o line and it is affecting play calling. Misdirection cannot make up for getting handled up front. If this is the way they call the rest of the season, they should put Bush in and play option all game. Getting your r-feshman QB killed while he slow reads plays is not going to cut it.
The O-line doesn't get handled when they call straight, hard plays right at them. That was clear from the series when we marched it down the field, including using Bush. We ran over them at that point, but, they we went back to slow developing plays that gave GT time to attack the gaps.
I think the thinking was it was Cam against a Fr CB and thought Cam would either win the jump ball or get a PI call but like Charlie Brown we got a rock instead. With 2 plays to get one yard you QB sneak it over and THEN go for the Cam matchup! Duh!

The age of lining up and running the ball without motion or misdirection are done for VT and are headed out for almost all of college football.

Look out, LOLUVA could be trouble.... they are building confidence and we are reeling... I hate to even give them a second look, but from what I'm seeing, Jackson is out of sorts, receivers are not getting open, minimal o-line protection or holes to run thru...the list goes on.
The Virginia offense is playing with a LOT more confidence right now. They can score in the air.

One positive from today's game. If Cornelson can get his head out of his ass, and Jackson can get over worrying about getting killed by that crap O-line, I think we have found a big WR that can exploit smaller corners. Kumah has really come of age the past couple of games. Would like to see less jump ball prayers, and more standard slant and post routes to Kumah over the next three ball games. He can become a real weapon. Reminds me a lot of Boykin.
"Jump ball prayers" is the one real problem I have with Josh. If he zips a few more balls as opposed to floating them, takes away a lot of those 50/50 balls, opens the door for more PI calls on the defense, etc. That being said, if he does put just an ounce of "zip" on that last 4th down throw, that play would have been looked at as a genius call (perhaps).
