Virginia Tech will join a great group of teams in Charleston for the 2018 Charleston Classic

Certainly better than this years TG tourney, but great group may be stretching it. Gotta say I would disappointed not to win against that field.

Yeahhh this is what I would consider a great group for a early season tournament. Wichita State was the preseason BPI #1 at ESPN.

So it would be reasonable to expect:

Alabama, Purdue, Wichita State aren't the worse teams to potentially play against to start a season. Certainly much better than the teams we are starting out with this season. And honestly Alabama has been recruiting pretty decent lately. I mean they are ranked 34th in the 2018 team rankings per 247 (got a high 4/5 star kid Jared Butler), that's higher than us, and Purdue is 2 spots behind them at 36th. Stars don't mean everything, but I see at least 2 of those teams fighting for a NCAA spot, Avery Johnson is doing some nice things down there in Alabama. Should be a pretty good tournament.

Shockers and Bama are best competition here. Shockers would be biggest challenge (though they lose 6 seniors after this year they still keep a bunch of scoring). Bama only losing 2 seniors after this year, but I don't think they are as good as WSU.

If so, they'd have to be walkons. 13 is the limit for scholarships in basketball

Can't rule out transfers, we seem to have at least one every season.

Also, and I have been and will continue to preach this all season long until his play proves me wrong, NAW is a borderline one-and-done. It would be fantastic to have him back for a second season, but I am in no way counting on it and neither should any VT Basketball fans.

I doubt Fullard comes back on scholarship next year. Believe he only got one this year because we had one available. I think we're still looking to add one big man to this year's class. Probably Thamba

A little disappointed that we aren't in Wichita's spot so we get 3 quality games with wins.

But, hard to complain about being the presumed #1 seed. Let's keep #1 seeds coming this year.

Good. I want that revenge game against Alabama. We lost that NCAA tourney game more than they won it.

The most competitive field may end up being the Charleston Classic Nov. 15, 16 and 18. The top half of the bracket includes Virginia Tech hosting Ball State while Alabama plays Northeastern. The Hokies are expected to challenge for a top four finish in the ACC while the Collin Sexton-less Tide should still be in the hunt for a berth out of the SEC. The bottom half of the bracket includes our top returning player in Carsen Edwards of Purdue playing Appalachian State and Kellan Grady, one of the top 20 returning players on our list, and Davidson playing Wichita State. The Shockers are retooling a bit but don't think for a second Gregg Marshall won't have Wichita State amped to be a factor again in the AAC. A potential Edwards-Grady matchup would be must-see watching in the semifinals while a Virginia Tech-Alabama semifinal would end up being a high-level, fast-paced, intense game. This field could have half its field end up in the NCAA tournament.

Interesting...it's gonna be a tough tournament.
