Solid first drive followed up by a crap series that included two completely unnecessary jump ball pass plays. That crap needs to be eliminated from the package. There isn't a hodges or ford on this roster.

I'm pleased with playcalling this far. Last series wasn't successful execution. But liked the mix, back shoulder throws, etc. First Drive was very nice.
I feel like those fade and back shoulder calls are great when you have the personnel, but our WRs just aren't winning those battles very often this year

With that said: the Oline that we have on the field right now cant protect and look confused. we need that threat of a QB taking off and torching the D to give us a little bit of wiggle room with our play calling. Our receivers don't seem to get much separation, our Oline don't block very well, our RB's can't seem to get past initial contact. It's just frustrating to watch.

Yes. But people have figured out we get one set of adjustments. Fuente makes them at half time and they are probably predictable. If you have a capable DC on the other side they are going to make constant adjustments.

I agree o-line has played horrible for most part giving him time to throw or running plays but if you think he hasn't played like crap when he does have time to throw, then you are clueless.
He has no confidence, his throws when he has time are him throwing off his back foot and just wobbly or over/under thrown.

no is is questioning high toughness but you can clearly see this kid lacks confidence but he has to learn to stay strong in the pocket and follow through with his throws. Most of them is him throwing off his back foot or the throws are horribly inaccurate
I mean, that's how young players learn, by making mistakes. We'd all like him to learn from his mistakes faster, but I'm not sure there's enough time week to week. I'd expect another mediocre game next week (esp on a short week), and hope for improvement during our 15 bowl practices.
I don't expect him to be perfect but I expect progression as the season goes on. From WVU til now... JJ has regressed
I agree it's frustrating, but improvement isn't linear. You want to get better each day, but that's just not realistic. There's ups and downs and zero-change days. I do think he's playing better today than against GT (not saying much, I know).
I'll trust the coaching staff that JJ is the all around the best option we have. I expect to see some improvement for the bowl game, and further improvement at the start of next season.

If you've watched our last month of games and haven't seen that Josh Jackson has - and I'll put this nicely - really struggled with accuracy and deep throws, then one of us is drinking too much. Or not enough.
He's made some nice throws, too - those do count! - but anyone who says he hasn't regressed has their head in the sand.
I really think you can't discount the effect of losing Nijman at left tackle. Left tackle is the most important position on the OL as he protects the QBs blind side. If a QB loses confidence in his blind side protections all bets are off.
No one is denying the OL issues, both recent (Nijman) and season-long (they're just not a good run-blocking unit). But this offense is predicated on taking what the D gives.
When we throw that WR inside screen, the ball needs to be on the inside shoulder of the receiver, not at his knees. It needs to be a catchable ball, in stride. It's the difference between a 3-5 yard gain and a 6-8 yard gain. If we were better at those plays, the D wouldn't be able to stack the box on every 3rd down and stop Another Inevitable Inside Run.
Point being - those are timing issues. JJ's not running for his life on those plays. He takes the snap and the ball is out. Those throws need work. Same with accuracy on long balls, especially over the middle of the field. Lots of misses. Lots of catches made by Cam/Savoy/Kumah despite bad ball placement.

These 5 to 8 yard routes on 2nd or 3rd and 10 or more is HORRIBLE. They have to extend the field. This is not rocket science. This is a failure of the coaching staff, not the kids. The kids are running the plays they are told to run. This is on the staff.

Here's my opinion on being a coach that makes multiple millions of dollars a year. If you have lost confidence in your team keep it to yourself. 18-22 year olds look up to their coaches and need mentoring and need people to believe in them. If you stop believing in them and tell them as much there is little hope they will have the wherewithal to fight through the hard times.
Having said that I can't stress how much the loss of Nijman affects our passing game.

Josh Jackson needs to be decisive when he runs. What I see, he slows down and braces for impact as opposed to being in control and going "his" way. He needs to get his confidence back, using short slants and using the RPO wisely. He more frequently goes for the long ball... but missing them more, now. Why don't we run the pass play to the running back who releases over the middle? .... It's easy to be an armchair coach or offensive coordinator.
