Too Much Awesome to Handle - Georgia Tech Game Review

Well that was fun. I don't know of any Hokie fans who expected a performance like that on either side of the ball. I mean we all knew the defense was really good, but this was a whole 'nother level. Even though I almost went into cardiac arrest for the fourth time in two games, I really expected nothing less than a one-score game. Let's break down all of the spectacularity (may or may not be a word):

Logan F*cking Thomas. I can't remember the last time Logan completed 9 passes in a row. This Logan we saw last night never really showed up since 38-0 happened. And guess what guys?! His receivers caught the ball! Sometimes with one hand! Not a typo! LT also had no interceptions for the first time this season. What blows me away is the fact that his best game to date came against the first ACC opponent, after three games of meh and welp, and he basically put the team on his back do and outscored GT by himself. As TheFifthFuller stated last night, pretty good for a tight end, right?

129 yards. WTF. One would think that the three Ramblin' turnovers had done them in. Or the six false start penalties. But the Hokies forced 4 punts on 9 drives, and missed ample opportunities on the touchdown drive to end it and take over. The freshmen corners played out of their minds all night, and Jesse Palmer himself pointed out how amazing the line was. I don't want us to be labeled as the best defense in the country, because Antone said that last year at the start of the season and that didn't work out well. We're best when nobody is talking about us and we just bring our lunch pail to work. In other news, Kyle Fuller is a beast of a WHIP linebacker. I hope to see him on more corner blitzes in the future. Even when he didn't make the tackle, he was forcing runners outside into the ends and secondary run support.

The Run Game Will Be Back Next Week. Teams wanted to see Logan Thomas isolated. They wanted to see him beat a defense on his own. Georgia Tech was able to isolate him, and they paid big for it. That's not a soft defense, either. UNC is weak in the secondary, so now that they know LT can beat them, they will have to respect that, which in turn will open up space for Trey, JC, Mangus and hopefully Caleb as well. Even though all the back struggled this week, think of it as an experiment the other team was playing on us that will benefit us in the future.

Lastly, Detrick Bonner is not going to get benched, and Antone is not going to play safety. Bonner is a good zone coverage defender. He is good in run support. When he struggles, he is in man coverage, and often it is when he lines up on the line across from a receiver. His two picks vs WCU came in zone coverage, as did his pick against Duke last year. Bud will simply have to be aware and take advantage of Bonner's strengths, which I have no doubt that he will. People didn't notice because he didn't get thrown at as much, but Jarrett got beat twice last night in the first half, and hasn't exactly excelled in man coverage either. Both safeties get their picks and pass break-ups in zone coverage. Antone will come back in October and will play corner.

I still don't know what's wrong with Cody Journell, other than he was ready to fight some b*tches last night at 2 am in Blacksburg.

Can't wait for the rest of ACC play now. Bring on dem Tar Heels.

Yeah, I was so pumped up after the game, I couldn't hit the hay until 2 last night.

...and get them, we did!

What more do you know of this, sir?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

People were sending him death threats about missing another field goal and then he posted on twitter for those people to meet him at his place when he got back from ATL

My advice would be to delete your twitter account or never look at any comments. Nothing good happens at 2 AM in the real world or on Twitter.

He just tweeted not long ago that he was receiving threats and all sorts of other stuff. Really unclassy for any of our fans.

That kind of crap happened to Sean Glennon and his sister who also attended Tech. His parents received quite a few nasty phone calls in the middle of the night from so-called Tech "fans". It's no wonder his brother, Mike Glennon, wouldn't even consider us when he was being recruited out of high school.

He since deleted the tweet, but he basically said something along the lines of,

"To all the people telling me to go kill myself, I'll be back in Blacksburg at 2 am so stop talking sh*t with your thumbs"

Classless all around. Beamer needs to to have another talk with this kid.

He may not of handled it the best way, but what do you expect of a college student that is receiving death threats after a tough couple of weeks. It is not like he wants to miss his field goals. I'm assuming his goal is to make it in the NFL which you have to be perfect in the NCAA to do so.

Furreal. Besides, the angle on that field goal is a tough one for any kicker. A 25 yarder from the left hash? Yuck

I don't agree with anyone threatening anyone on twitter or anywhere else for any reason. But he didn't have to respond. That's what I expect of anyone.

I worked through Tech dealing with the drunken public, and a few times I lost my cool and let the 'perps know what time I would be off. Thank God I'm too old for social networking. Cut him some slack, college bros only have a few years experience handling all that testosterone.

Fair enough.

Any work on Tariq Edwards?
He came out in the game and I was wondering about the injury, if any.

I saw him back in the fourth quarter. Also he was front and center to see Frankdancing.gif

I know it's early, and there are many challenges ahead, but let's just take this in for a moment:

For today, all is right with the world.

"Exit light..."

I'm basically circling the Miami game on my calendar - that could be for all of the Coastal Division marbles.

I'm circling UNC. At this point in the season, that IS our most important game.

get to work Hokies...the team that GASHED our defense is coming to town next week and we want revenge!!!

Onward and upward

That was basically exactly the game I expected on both sides. All along, it was clear that we had a ridiculous amount of experience against this specific defense. Guys like Tyler, Wilson, Collins and Kyle played specific roles in the past against GT that were quite successful. This personnel grouping was pretty much Bud's dream team for facing PJ>

Offensively, our running game has been hurting more and more every week. They went all out to stop it and we put the entire game on Logan's shoulders. Of course we did. When threatened, put it all on LT.

To a T, that was how I expected that game to go. If they didn't turn it over 4x and jump offsides 6x, we may have a very different result today. But, they did.

Not being able to run the ball with the RB's hurt, no doubt. Two good takeaways from the game though: 1- we were able to sustain drives and give our defense the rest it needed primarily through the passing game. 2- The turnovers and penalties on GT were mainly the result of a fresh defense being able to pressure the GT O-line and QB into making mistakes. While the offense didn't light up the scoreboard, they were able to move the ball and avoid having too many 3 and outs. I'll take it, especially with the great job LT did of not turning the ball over.

His receivers caught the ball!

All I could think whenever Knowles (aka Clifford Franklin) caught the ball, was about time and I hope he keeps it up. If you are the default number one since Coles can only play so many snaps, then you have to act like it and catch whatever is thrown your way and if you can't catch it, make sure the other team doesn't either.

Clifford Franklin...I knew it would catch on. Now if we can just get that clip (GIF wizards??) of him with the stick'em.

Football's like a one-man cold to Demetri Knowles. Demetri Knowles only one catchin' it...Demetri Knowles only one coming down wid it. (Then Jack Tyler comes and shoves him in his locker)
