Never too late to celebrate

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

I haven't rewatched the film, but I have slobbered over the boxscore. The defense played well; an understatement for sure. Before last night's game, Georgia Tech averaged 345.3 rushing yards a game. Virginia Tech held them to a buck-twenty-nine. That eclipses the 192 yards rushing Virginia Tech held Georgia Tech to last year, and is now an all-time best for Bud Foster against Paul Johnson which ranks among other epic stymieings of Georgia Tech's offense under Johnson. Who knows how the rest of this season will play out, but I'm going to enjoy watching Foster's group ball. Aggressive defense is such a rarity in college football, and it was highly enjoyable to watch those kids trust each other to do their jobs, and fly forward every snap.

These are some words about Logan Thomas. I had no idea he suffered an abdominal strain and yesterday was his first time throwing since Marshall. Yet, the offensive game plan could be best summarized as "1. Go win us the game, Logan". Again, without the benefit of rewatching, it seemed as if Loeffler spread out the field, and trusted his quarterback to make the plays. Logan reciprocated and played terrific. He distributed the ball well, was accurate on his underneath throws, and punished the Bees with his legs. It helps when guys like Demitri Knowles are catching the ball with one arm, and guys like fashion icon and Kalvin Cline and Willie Byrn step up.

The hottest debate on the site has been whether or not Thomas is a capable quarterback. He proved again last night he can be. His upside was never something I doubted, but he has been inconsistent. If Tech has aspirations of something more than making a bowl game, Thomas will need to continue to play this well.

There will be better analysis than this from French and Mason over the next few days.

Haha, what is that? The Charleston?

it's glorious

Didn't want to make a post dedicated to this, but someone on the GT site took the time to look up the ratings of our defense coming out of high school. The only players rated higher than a 3 star were Jarrett and Kendall fuller. Maddy, Collins, and Trimble all were not rated. We have the best coaches in the business if you ask me.

That's amazing - both that our coaches are that good and that the ratings outfits are that bad. Bet Rivals would love to put a couple more retroactive stars on Facyson.

Collins was a 3-star. Maddy was a 2-star.

Thats really impressive... In Bud We Trust...

masterpiece.
This was one for the ages.
Who knows who/what will happen for next game or the rest of the season, but...
I love this team.

Teams defend us by taking away the run and making Logan have to beat them. Well.....we can see how that worked.

I loved the game plan. Logan really seemed to be in-sync with his receivers tonight and through those 5-15 yard passes beautifully. I hope UNC and Miami took note of Logan and do a little bit more to stop the pass so we can open up our run game a bit more.

All the Leal people seem to be quiet thus far after this win and rightfully so. If you still think Leal is a better option after that performance, which Logan was hurt for and hadn't practiced, then you need to wake up. Logan proved to everyone why he's our starting quarterback last night.

The D was AWESOME!!!! Every time we play GT it seems like they are just one drive away from figuring us out. Last night was the first time I've ever felt like they had no chance agianst our defense. Fayscon is just a monster and I love it. Big Bro Fuller did an awesome job playing WHIP last night. He really got in on their O-line and just caused havoc.

I must say, Journell does seem like a nice kid and he means nothing but good. I just think he has some inner-demons that he needs to work out. All that aside, we cannot keep missing field goals and he missed what could have been a huge one last night. Gotta work that out.

Overall, that's a great win and I think we opened some eyes to how good this team can be. Let's go get UNC!!!

I loved all their false starts last night, and I would say a lot of it had to do with Kyle Fuller being ON IT the first few drives for them. Their O line was wanting to make sure they didn't get jumped, but Kyle had their number. I have no doubt that Foster was like, "They're going to go low...that's what they do. Jump over them, and they got nothin'!"

There were a couple times I saw Kyle actually leap over the guard and tackle. BRILLIANT!

I think the false starts were a thing of GT's own doing. Normally when they put their B-backs in motion, they always snap it when the B-Back is right behind the QB. Last night they put him in motion, then he stopped and set himself beind the QB. I think they were trying to throw us for a loop and mess up our jumps and draw some offsides, but I think they threw themselves more than anything.

The counterpoint to this is that Fuller getting in there and disrupting things on the first drive (and forcing a fumble because of it) likely put their O-Line on guard for the rest of the quarter at least, then they started changing things up to keep VT from jumping, then they made more mistakes.

I really do think that Kyle Fuller set the tone for our defense on the first drive, and the entire defense continued that tone for the rest of the game. It was really fun to watch.

It worked once, Tyler got an offsides, rushing in on the B-back movement. Other than that, impressive of the D to play disciplined football.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Me too. I giggled with glee on every false start knowing that another camera shot of PJ's sour face and "What the f&*$ are you doing?!" was only seconds away. Must have GIF's of this please!!

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

We need a GIF of Kyle jumping a Gah Tech linemen.

"I'd give real money if he'd shut up."

What's really fucked up (excuse my language) are people still sending him death threats after that game. He may not have the best personality nor make the smartest decisions, but he's still part of the team. He has yet to lose us a game, thanks to our defense, but it is just really fucked up that he is being threatened. I did hear he posted on twitter that any of the people that are giving him death threats could meet him at his place at 2am when he got back.

He has yet to lose us a game

Some might argue the Sugar Bowl a bit...

Yes, I was more speaking of this season. But yea, he may be part of the blame for the Sugar Bowl even though we should have never been in that position in the first place.

The backup went 4/5 that game. Our offense was stagnant and we needed every point Myer got us that night. I don't really see how Journell was to blame for the sugar bowl. The fact that we had to kick five field goals is more to blame.

He won us at least 3 or 4 games last year too. Not to mention a couple close ones in 2011.

Completely agree. He's not deserving of the vitriol he's receiving.

That really is crossing a dark line. There's no justification for it. This is a game at the end of the day and it's all supposed to be for fun.

At least he won't go down without a fight. :-)

After checking twitter this morning, apparently I tweeted him last night after he sent that (DRUNJ)...

Hyping up Hokie Nation one video at a time.

My favorite quote from the GT site:

"We beat our brains against a brick wall named Hopkins. ing brilliant gameplan."

They should have realized if the Tide broke against that wall of Hokie Stone, a swarm of bees would fare far worse. I'm really digging this team and while I know Logan's performance last night doesn't guarantee similar performances like that in the future, I'm personally willing to say that I'm very pleased the team has a leader of Logan's caliber and that I am very proud to have him as part of the Hokie QB lineage. Go Hokies!

I think that would be a stone wall... as in Hokie Stone!

#Let's Go - Hokies

More proof of French's point that DEs might make prettier plays, but DTs win games more often.

I thought Gayle played just as well as Hopkins last night. Every time they ran to his side it seemed like he was getting right in the pitch lane and forcing the play inside. Exactly what you're supposed to do against that offense.

Rip his freaking head off!

I agree. Every time they went to Gayle's side, Vad looked like he didn't know what to do. Gayle knew what Vad was supposed to do better than Vad knew what to do, and it seemed to always work out in our favor.

Don't forget about Dadi.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Can we keep George Whitfield out of the stadium/off camera? It can't be just a coincidence that as soon as he gets on camera our offense stalls and Logan gets sacked.

I don't believe Whitfield's coaching hurt Logan at all, even going into last year. The lack of a robust recruiting on the offensive side of the ball sure did, as did the lack of competent coaching all around.

Actually, as soon as my friend walked into the apartment, the cable went out momentarily and then LT got sacked. So I blame her, who shall remain nameless for her own protection.

Heather D? :-)

Just kidding. Couldn't help it. Sorry.

Nonono that's too specific, let's go with H. Dinich.

If anything you could say the opposite... George Whitfield's presence resulted in a big game for Logan...

Logan 3:16

it was a twitter joke last night that as soon as they started talking about Whitfield and showed him on the sideline our offense sputtered and Logan had a bad series

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Blame me, I stopped taking shots of Wild Turkey. We were scoring when I was taking shots. I have an exam at 11:15...so I clearly wasn't committed enough. I'm sorry everyone.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Not sure whether to award turkey leg for honesty, or downvote for lack of commitment. You should have continued the Wild Turkey shots. Remember folks, it's only crazy if it doesn't work.

You're exactly right. Exam wasn't even that hard. We would've blown them out if I kept taking shots. So far #shots =#TDs.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I was at work for the first quarter and a half watching on ESPN3. But when 8:30 rolled around, it was time to leave to go home. I got home just prior to the end of the half.

What a coincidence. Right at 8:30 I was CLEANING OFF A SOAKING WET CAT THAT HAD BEEN BLASTED BY A SKUNK. fml

That's the most interesting euphemism I've ever heard.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Everyone did their part, though the FGs still aren't where they need to be. Yeah, I think the ACC is loathing the VT game on their schedule. Please, please let us get another shot at Clemson; I might even have relocated to Charlotte for a new civilian job by then!

The game could have easily been 20-3 if Fayscon recovered that fumble (GT wouldnt have scored TD) and we made that field goal. But i am still happy regardless

@VTimHokie85

Or if Bonner picks that damn floater off instead of jumping the receiver early.

To be fair to him, he probably expected a rocket into the receiver's hands, and the floater messed with his timing as he clearly double-pumped on the swat attempt. Still though.

I could not love this team more right now.

Ky Fuller has joined the ranks of Tyrod and Bryan Randall for me.

Kyle is the definition of a warrior.

My girlfriend asked if she could break up with me and go with Kyle. I said absolutely! But under the condition I could hang out with them.

I had a similar issue/compromise when Danny Coale was playing for us.

I still have that issue with my wife...

-- Last note on Thomas, but he's played well in Bobby Dodd Stadium in his career. He's 26-for-38 in two games here for 430 yards and four touchdowns. He's also run 34 times for 128 yards and three scores.

"Exit light..."

Going into last night's game I wasn't as pumped as I nearly am for Tech games, I was just ready to see this team send a message, which they most definitely did. Now I am counting down the hours until UNC. One opponent at a time. Go Hokies! It's been 2 years since I have felt so confident and proud of a Tech team, and boy does it feel good.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I've had the best warm fuzzy feeling for the last 14 hrs....man its great!! So freakin proud today!!!!! :)

@AMB4VT

It's an amazing feeling, isn't it?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Most definitely!! Maybe got 4 hrs of sleep last night and I still feel awesome!!! God I love this team.

@AMB4VT

My trainer this morning told me "it was one of the suckiest games to watch"

I then promptly told him he witnessed the best defense in the nation hold a team that averaged 400 yards a game to 129 on the ground. I also told him that not every game has to be like Oregon and running up 40 pts.

I also told him UNC better watch the fuck out.

He then promptly destroyed me in training and I did it with a Kyle Fuller smile.

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

As soon as I saw the GIF of Beamer dancing it made me think of this

Frank must have learned those moves in Fancy Gap. He didn't learn them up here.

There was much hip-thrusting done in the direction of my TV after the game whenever PJ's face appeared on the screen. And my friend's dad said his face looked like it had been stung repeatedly by yellow jackets. So, in your jacket-stung face, Johnson.

My favorite part of Fake Tech week is the schaudenfreude at the wailing and gnashing of teeth on their message boards after the fact.

I been here since day 0.

At the moment of the first turnover we caused, I felt really comfortable for the rest of the game like we were always just out of reach from them. I don't think I have ever felt that way playing against Paul Johnson.

Celebrate bitch!
Celebrate

So, I was really needing some Weird Al Polka, so I turned it on. Listening to it in the background and came upon this page again, and I must say, it fits the gif. Polka Hokies!

It seems like every time we go to Atlanta, with the exception of 09 we wind up just crushing their spirits in some form or another. I love it.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

When Kendall Fuller made that game ending interception, this was me...

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

hahahaha i jumped in the air and landed on my dog got yelled at by my fiance and chugged my beer, this seems like a much safer end of game celebration

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

When gt fumbled on our 4 yard line, I jumped in the air and yelled "BALL!". Then I got the murder eyes and the silent treatment from my wife because we had just put my daughter to bed. Luckily, she didn't wake up or I really would have been in trouble.

GF_Warthog was pretty mad at me too. I was a basket case last night and Logan got sacked on that terrible blitz pick up by Caleb, I smacked my thighs with both hands and screamed. She left soon after.

We good now though. She got dinner, a cookout shake, and some Blu-Ray movie she liked tonight. Gotta know how to work the ladies after gameday, fellas.

Just hope the Hokies keep their eyes on the prize and stay hungry. Need to remember they beat Georgia Tech last year also.

Guys (and ladies), I just realized something.

This is the first Hokie senior class that will graduate without ever having lost to Georgia Tech.

(Well, I thought so anyway... but DJ Coles played in the '09 game)

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I think in one of Logan's interviews he said that he was around as a (true) Freshman for the last loss and not wanting to ever lose to them again.

Yep, that was his Redshirt year right outta Brookville. Tyrod was our fearless leader and Juju was his back up. I'll never forget Juju coming in vs. Boston College in 2009 and throwing that 80 yard bomb to Marcus Davis. After that... he was never seen again. (not really, he played more in 09 but was your usual backup).

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

That's what I meant, the year when he was a true freshman taking his redshirt year.

They need another shot at Clemson so we don't have a graduating class to never have beaten the Fighting Dabos.

Leonard. Duh.

I seriously think that Bud took our early losses to GT to heart and it pissed him off like nothing else could. He seems to have GT number now and just shuts them down year after year.
