November College Basketball Discussion Thread

This thread is for all non-VT related college basketball news and notes. Feel free to discuss games, players, rankings, conspiracy theories, and anything else in the wonderful world of NCAA basketball. I will try to post a new forum topic each month and a new one if the discussion gets too crowded.

For the first Discussion Thread I want to start by saying Happy Feast Week! Maui, NIT, Battle 4 Atlantis, and the PK80 celebrating Phil Knight's 80th birthday. Yesterday, however, former Hokie Jalen Hudson led #8 Florida to a victory over New Hampshire. He had 26 points, 22 of which came in the second half, 7 rebounds, and tied for a team high in assists with 1. New Hampshire shut the rest of Florida down offensively while UNH forward Tanner Leisner dominated in the first half and finished the game with 23 points. He and his team look like a legitimate threat from a low-major team. But back to the Jalen Hudson takeover. He scored 17 of Florida's final 22 points, bringing back flashes of his 2014 games against Duke and Wake Forest.

Always choose joy.

Totally forgot about Hudson...

NC State beat Arizona last night. Gottfried recruited a bunch of good players and now Keats is coaching them up.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

And then lost to Northern Iowa.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Also Notre Dame beat #6 Wichita state. Good start for the ACC.

Helluva finish for that game. Plus Mike Brey going super casual for the games is hilarious.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Rhode Island with a nice win against seaton hall tonight

Uva very impressive so far.

They're pretty loaded, I feel like they'll start to make noise in December

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Just in time to shit the bed on 1/3.

wasnt impressed with them in the wisconsin game. both teams looked god awful, uva has moments but against a team that can consistently score or shoot the 3 theyre in trouble. that being said their size is going to give us some serious headaches this year they rebound well, but they really miss a guy like brogdon who you can basically just say go score points and he will

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I'm not sure UVA's game against Wisconsin is indicative of how they'll play in the ACC. Both teams prefer to come by their points in half-court sets, so it lends itself to a lower scoring game because there's just going to be fewer possessions in general. Granted, UVA didn't shoot very well from the field, but they'll get some easier looks against less disciplined teams in league play.

If I were a fan of UVA, I'd be a little worried that so much of the offense is so dependent on Guy - he's not a bad athlete, but he's not a great one either. I think he'll struggle to get his shot off more consistently as they play teams with more length and athleticism. I do think he's underrated as a playmaker though, and the threat of his shooting ability allows him to use his shot fake effectively and penetrate a defense. He'll need his teammates to hit open looks if UVA wants to make noise this year.

eh this isnt your wisconsin of yesteryear, gard has this pushing the pace wayyyy more these days neither team could make a shot and both had tons of turnovers (~20 in the second half between both if my memory serves me correct) and thats my point, kyle guy is not brogdon and they need an instant offense kind of player like him to really take them to the next level. They'll be good this year no doubt, they always are but I just dont see them being dominant

Another former Hokie doing damage. Ben Emelogu put up 20 pts to lead SMU past #2 Arizona. Dang, his one year with us seems so long ago. He was fun to watch.

At least of all the times you hear about someone transferring to be closer to home, his has always seemed genuine. He had a rough freshman year.

Plus the coaching change. JJ is actually an assistant at NC State now

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

1) I completely forgot Hudson is still at Florida
2) I have no idea what his season numbers are but Good Jalen is showing up right now against Gonzaga

His numbers are insane especially the past few games. All of our bball transfers kick ass, even Ben Emelogu is averaging 11 a game for Smu I believe

Alabama forced to play 3 on 5 in their game against Minnesota and outscores them 30 to 22 during that period. Bench clearing brawl saw all of Alabamas bench ejected then another fouled out and another was injured. If only their football team had that much fight in them today maybe they would have beaten Auburn

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Who's the ass hole that scheduled UVA-Wisconsin?

Rip his freaking head off!

I thought the ACC - BiG schedule was based on last years finish adjusted to avoid rematches and home/away trade offs?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

It might be, I have no clue, but allowing those two teams to play should be illegal. I'd rather have eye cancer than watch the "beautiful basketball" they play.

My finger just detached itself from my body when I up-legged something about UVa winning a game

Wake would be a huge black eye on Illinois' resume. They lost to Liberty at home earlier this season.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

ACC up 6-1 in the acc/big10 challenge after tonight. #goacc!

Lol I understand that usually it's reserved for the circle of suck, 0-0 football games, and Mike London clock management... Just trying to rep the conference for once ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's a who's who of names associated with VT in the Penn State @ NC State game right now. James Johnson on the bench for NC State with Satchel Pierce in at the 5 for Penn State.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

How did Satchel do?

Didn't play too differently. Missed a layin at point blank range. That was about the only shooting opportunity I saw.

Getting 12 minutes per game, averaging 3.5 PPG and 2.9 RPG while shooting an abysmal 35% from the floor. Against NC State, 2 points, no rebounds in 10 minutes.

So sadly, kind of glad he isn't here anymore.

Trevor Thompson putting up similar numbers in the NBA G League this season. 12 MPG, 4.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.1 APG and 2.7 Personal Fouls per game through 12 games for the Santa Cruz Warriors

ACC has secured the challenge by being up 12-2 with one contest remaining tonight. Only losses were by a Louisville squad still reeling after their scandal to Purdue on the road, and Boston College lost to Nebraska on the road. Last game tonight is Notre Dame at Michigan State. Tough contest for the Irish, especially after what Michigan State did to UNC the other night.

Surprise sleeper team this season has to have South Dakota State in the mix. They have beaten Iowa and Ole Miss, and are 7-2 on the season so far. They lost to Kansas, so no shame in that and a surprisingly strong Wyoming squad.

The good news here is that they are a team that gets out and runs, having scored 90+ points in four of their nine games so far. Knowing that they put up 80 on Iowa and 99 in overtime against Ole Miss is a good sign of what the Hokies might accomplish with superior talent and better shooters. Bodes well for Saturday.
