Jekyll or Hyde?
Buzzketball is now 5-1 on the season, with its fifth blowout win behind them. The Hokies have won by at least 26 points in all five victories thus far. They now get their first Power 5 opponent on the season in the Iowa Hawkeyes. This opponent though is tough to determine what to expect in this upcoming game.
The Hawkeyes come to Cassell with a 4-2 record, having suffered terrible losses to the University of Louisiana Lafayette and South Dakota State. Their victories so far are over Chicago State, Alabama State, Grambling, and UAB. The Hawkeyes are giving up an average of 73 points per game so far. The Hokies came up short of the 100 point mark in their last contest by a couple of baskets but are still the highest scoring team in basketball and the only team averaging more than 100 points per game. I would expect a much lower scoring affair this evening though. These two teams have met three times as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, with the Hokies coming out on top in all three contests.

The Hawkeyes are coached by Fran McCaffery. He has been the head coach at Iowa since 2010 during which time the Hawkeyes have gone 138-101, with three trips to the NIT and three trips to the NCAAs in seven seasons. He is 389-278 as a head coach overall, with prior stops at Siena, UNC Greensboro, and Lehigh. All four schools have made at least one NCAA appearance under McCaffery. The Hawkeyes have several tough games ahead in Indiana, Penn State, and Iowa State before finishing out their Out of Conference schedule with a few less talented opponents.
Defensively, the Hawkeyes utilize a high pressure 1-2-2 court press that he regularly stretches to at least three quarter court. McCaffery coaches his teams to be especially aggressive around the perimeter and prior to create turnovers and transition scoring. His teams are also normally very high in blocked shots, especially the bigs down low. This season though their turnover numbers are rather ordinary 13 per game and blocks coming in at 4.8 per game. One other thing of note is that historically his teams do not foul. So far this season, they are averaging only 16.8 fouls per game with opponents attempting almost 16 free throws per contest. This cuts down on one area that usually bolsters Hokies scoring since Tech is averaging 32 attempts per game, making 23. Whichever trend holds true could be a major tipping point in this contest.
Offensively, they utilize the Rotation Continuity Zone Offense, especially against the 2-3 Zone defense that the Hokies run most often. This offense utilizes the bigs taking a pass at the short corner to either shoot, drive or pass from. The premise of this offense is to get your players where the defense isnt by finding holes in the zone with constant motion to create spacing.. Driving lanes are created by great spacing. The Hokies will need to ensure they protect the paint but are able to defend their assigned shooter. One critical area to watch will be the baseline entry by the guards in this offense for layups. If the Hokies can close this down it means they have to play their game outside rather than at the rim like they prefer. So far this season, the Hawkeyes are still attempting over 20 shots per game from outside so they have to stay with their man.
What does that mean for the Hokies?
The Hokies are at home, with what should be close to a sellout crowd so energy shouldn't be a problem. Likely, Buzz will start them again with the press defense to give Iowa a taste of its own medicine but more so to get the team moving on the court with a purpose so they don't come out in a lull.
This opponent will challenge the ball coming up the court, the perimeter shot and the shots down low so it will be interesting to see how the Hokies handle a defense that's closer to St Louis' defense than any other opponent so far. They cant afford to take a half off and expect to win this game. A win here also bolsters the RPI considering the previous opponents thus far.
The Hawkeyes are the largest roster the Hokies will have seen so far, so Blackshear will have his hands full, as will PJ Horne. The Hawkeyes have two 6'11 freshmen splitting time at center that are putting up huge combined numbers so far. Expect Iowa to have as many as three bigs on the floor at any one time tonight.
The Hawkeyes are a team that has solid depth so relies on at least ten players for 14 or more minutes per game. There is not a single Iowa starter that is averaging at least 30 minutes. This is also probably the best shooting team that the Hokies have seen so far. As a team they are shooting 51% from the floor, shoot free throws at 67% as a team.
The Hawkeyes perimeter shooting is managing just 43% on 20+ attempts per game. The Hokies should focus on forcing bad shots rather than risking foul trouble.
Hawkeyes Backcourt
![]()
Sophomore Isaiah Moss, #2, 6'5, 175 lbs is the leading scorer for the Hawkeyes, averaging 15.8 PPG, 2 RPG, and 2 APG. He is shooting 47% from the field and 94% from the stripe so a prime candidate to let shoot contested buckets rather than put on the line.

Sophomore Jordan Bohannon, #3, 6'1, 182 lbs, is scoring 14.5 PPG, 1.3 RPG, 5.2 APG and 1 SPG. He is shooting 44% from the floor and 85% from the line. He is their undisputed point guard with the ability to make pin point passes, especially to shooters moving down low.

Sophomore Maishe Dailey, #1, 6'6, 183 lbs is putting up 5.8 PPG, 1.2 RPG and 1.3 APG. He is shooting 44% from the field and 91% from the line. The Hokies can ill afford to let any shooter get in a groove because they have the ability to shoot, which most of their opponents thus far have not.
Hawkeyes Frontcourt

Sophomore Tyler Cook, #5, 6'9, 253 Lbs, is averaging 13.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 1.2 APG. He is putting the ball in at almost 60% and hits from the line at 74%. That production is coming with only 25 minutes per contest on the court so far.

Freshman Forward Luka Garza, #55, 6'11, 235 lbs is putting up 9.7 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.3 APG. He is shooting 55% from the field and 84% from the line. Blackshear will be critical in this game to combat this inside presence.
Freshman Forward Jack Nunge, #2, 6'11, 225 lbs is averaging 9.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 1.2 APG BPG while shooting 56% overall and 50% from outside. His one weakness is his 68% from the line but even that isn't terrible. He does however seem to have good hands and is able to create turnovers down low so Blackshear needs to be careful or he will have his pocket picked tonight.
What to expect from Iowa?
This is a fairly young roster that shows signs of being very promising. This is the most even opponent the Hokies have faced thus far. While Coach McCaffery has the makings of a really strong roster in the coming years, there is apparently room for growing pains after the losses to ULL and SDSU this year.
This is the most accomplished shooting team the Hokies have faced all season. One of the biggest differences in the scores of the Hokies previous games was opponents missed shot shooting percentage, which will likely see a boost after i
High intensity defense geared towards forcing bad perimeter shooting and creating turnovers. This team will also play stout defense down low, especially with their size advantage in this game.
The Hokies
The Hokies will have their hands full here, they need to make sure they come ready to play. Any sluggishness and you open the door to a quick Hawkeye run.
Blackshear and Horne have to find a way to play bigger than they are, stay out of foul trouble and contribute offensively in this game.
Hitting their perimeter shots will be a much more critical component of this game than any of the others so far. Getting the easy buckets at the rim are going to be much harder to come by in this contest and not many Hokies have shown the touch of a short jumper so far so scoring from the outside comes at a premium. The Hokies are leading the nation at 50% from outside so hopefully that continues.

AMMERMAN SINKS TWO FROM THE FREE THROW LINE!!! pic.twitter.com/CkTh9AYJOeβ VT Men's Basketball (@HokiesMBB) November 25, 2017
Free throw shooting ..... this team went 24 of 27 from the line or 88.9% which is a far cry from some of their previous games. Even better was that there were nine Hokies that contributed at the line, so it was a team performance.
In Closing
Do the Hokies come out with the energy they are capable of or are they slow out of the gates? This will really impact the final outcome in this game.
I do not see the Hokies scoring 100 in this contest. This is much more likely to be a closely contested game that goes down to the finally free throws. This game will be more finesse versus bulk, with Iowa going big to exploit the lane while the Hokies remain who they are with long lean shooters.
This could be a big game for the three freshman in terms of delivering a win. NAW has to show he can score against a stout defense, Bede could be called upon if Robinson gets in early foul trouble, and Horne will play meaningful minutes because I do not see Blackshear staying out of foul trouble. If Horne can contribute like he did against Houston Baptist than the Hokies should be fine.

Just a heads up. Not the first P5 opponent. Washington was.
Sorry don't really connect PAC 12 with Power basketball.
then I wouldn't use a football term to classify basketball
Right, because Arizona and UCLA are never connected with "Power basketball".
Thanks for the info, looking forward to see how our team plays tonight; especially NAW if there's some adversity. Also, would love to see Blackshear stay out of foul trouble and use that God-given frame in his favor. Go Hokies!
I always loved the Big10-ACC games while I was in school. Hopefully the crowd can play a factor tonight. Go Hokies!
Let's Go!!!!
Hokies!
I'm sitting here in the Casell, watching pregame warmups and I'm not getting a good feeling about this game, gang. Iowa is practicing like a team that's serious about playing good basketball. They're practicing layups, jumpers and 3-pointers and making most of them. Our guys are out there clowning around, working on their windmill dunks, self alley-oops and generally showboating around. And they're missing way too many of those. I hope Buzz gets them focused in the locker room, or else this could be an ugly night for the good guys.
Yell at them, they will hear you
Kind of a disappointing crowd. They probably could.
I love that actually. I know there's a time for doing drills but that's what practice is for. Shoot around and warm-ups are for exactly what they imply, getting loose. Basketball is one of the sports that I think benefits from the players having fun together.
I'm not sure I agree with that argument. Sure, the guys should have some fun out there, but that should be just a small part of warmups, especially with the game so late in the evening. Iowa looked like they were on a business trip during warmups and our guys looked like they were just goofing off. And for the first 15 minutes of the game, it looked much the same. Iowa was nailing their shots and the Hokies were not. Thankfully Buzz and the guys got it all sorted out and we got a great win.
According to Buzz in the postgame Q&A with Jon and Mike they had formal shootaround 5 hours before the game.
This is what they usually do prior to every game, and have for the past couple years. Maybe not as "focused" this season compared to others, but it hasn't seemed to have an effect on them this season. Just let em have fun, they're playing the game that they love and trying to enjoy doing so while they can.
I know it's only 6 games in, but we're 1st in the nation when it comes to effective field goal percentage, points per game, and shooting percentage.
That's cool.
Nasty collision, looks like Wagner got it right in the temple.
Looked like he was almost out on the fall. Didn't get the foul on KBS.
Hope Wagner is okay, but the foul should have been on him.
Super early, but this looks like the VT squad that played St. Louis
My fault. This is only the second game I've watched. The first was St. Louis
Late, late whistle on Blackshear.
This is a phrase I've heard way too much from announcers about opposing offenses already this year.
Two BS fouls on Blackshear to start the game. That's gonna be tough against Iowa's size.
Lol when NAW takes an extremely contested drive like that you can tell he's used to being the best player on the court.
Calling things extremely tight down low... that bodes well for the Hokies
Ref just bailed us out on that bad feed inside.
I don't know what a charge is anymore
This is going to be a 40 foul game.
Iowa already has 8-10 points off of tip-ins
My god how many second chance points can we withstand? We don't put bodies on anyone. I think we get to ahead of ourselves looking to run the break and it kills us on the defensive glass.
As small as we are, doing that often would just put bodies under people and draw way more fouls than actual rebounds
Uh oh, they let Hill find his shot
I would love to see us block/box out just one time on the defensive side.
About time Wilson drew a charge.
Momentum changer.
I didn't know Pat Narduzzi coached basketball.
It would be nice if we ever boxed out.
Don't hold your breath
Something's wrong. These commercials are actually making me want to get Arby's.
Arby's just bought Buffalo Wild Wings
Maybe they can improve the service at the Blacksburg location.
They are so slow. Only times I would go was when I knew I would be there for 2+ because of a game. Usually I just ordered wings to go, not go get them, and have my roommate who worked there bring them home since they were allowed to take any unpicked up to go orders
I call that being Arbsessed
French credits Arby's for his cheese aversion. Me, I'm like you, now I want to get to Arby's next chance I get.
Speaking of Arby's.... they bought Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday
drink
What the fuck is Iowa's coach losing his mind over? The officiating has been pretty even (probably slightly in Iowa's favor so far).
Probably more to fire up the team after letting us get on a run than to actually dispute a call
Robinson has been a liability on defense.
And offense. Worst game he's played in a long time.
Can't guard that guy good Lord
Ugh they can't friggin miss behind the arc right now.
Horne has played excellent spelling Blackshear after KJ picked up two fouls. If only he were a few inches taller...
I agree. Great energy and some Zach Ledayish plays against some big boys down low.
This feels like the tourney game against Wisconsin where Bronson Koenig turned into vintage Kobe Bryant.
At least we were contesting his shots. This dude has 10 feet of space every time he pulls up....
Robinson has been.....not good tonight. Need him to step up and play his game.
Fuck slow tempo teams
5 did not have a good first half. maybe he will get better in the second 20 minutes
5? Get better? Is that you Buzz???
But yeah, JRob did not look like he was running the offense like he normally does. I would like to see some of Bede if 5 can't pick it up in the first few minutes of the second half
So apparently when we don't shoot over 60% from the field/3-point line we can't look like a competent offense? This game has been even more frustrating than the Saint Louis game to me. That game we have the excuse of looking ahead to playing Providence. This game is at home against a team that just shit the bed to two nobodies in Louisiana Lafayette and South Dakota State. We better come out with some passion in the 2nd half
C'mon Hokies!! I have not gotten to watch more than 8 minutes of Buzzketball all season. I can't wait to finally watch a whole half!
Good to see Blackshear making his prescene known early in the 2nd
Absolutely. You can tell by the way he's been playing so far that it was killing him to watch from the bench due to foul trouble.
Love the vision by J-Rob!
That was a pretty possession.
that's the way, uh-huh, uh-huh we like it!!!
Finally some tempo! Let's go Hokies!
crack crack go the ankles!
I think 5 got better.
oh yeah.... much better!!!
I WANT THAT IN A GIF!!!
J-Rob killed a man
5 put ol' boy on skates, yeesh!!!
Let's GO!!!!
Hokies
I'M HAVING FUN
I look up and we're winning by... 19? When did that happen?
Oh nice, haven't been watching, just following this thread, and I thought we were down by 12.
We had like a 12-0 run after it was 40-40. Fast breaks, tempo, and Iowa laying enough bricks to build a small mansion.
Safe to say the team got the message at the half lol
20-1 run. This is when this team is fun to watch, lots of hustle and effort so far this half
Iowa is 1/16 from the floor in the second half? Bud must have given the halftime speech.
Woah I grabbed a shower at half and just got back. What the jank happened?
WHAAAAAAATT?? That's a charge!
J-Rob!!!
Blackshear...
Looking a little sloppy
Is Chris Clarke the best athlete to ever play basketball for the Hokies??
absolutely one of the best
Not yet
Deron Washington comes to mind
This will never not get a leg from me.
He was the one guy I thought about when I asked the question. He was electrifying to watch. I'd love to see those two in a dunk competition!
Pig would beat them both with ease.
He is probably the most athletic player VT has had - I know it might be hard to tell now since he has very limited minutes, but just watch him warm up.
Edit: He would beat Clarke with ease - Washington may put up a fight, but Pig wins because he is so much smaller and the dunks look more impressive.
Much better overall this half. Iowa missing some open looks really hurt their confidence. Scary to think what score would be if we shoot better on open 3s.
Much better may be an understatement. Adjusting for opponent that was probably the best half we've played all season. Especially with all the flack the team catches for questionable defensive stretches.
Considering coming into tonight we were shooting over 50% on 3s and leading the nation in scoring, I think the answer to this question is easy
Techs strategy seems to be the ol' "were more conditioned than you, so enjoy keeping it close in the 1st half, but we'll bury you in the 2nd"
From a tied game at halftime to a comfortable 20+ point win
Not bad
Only 9 turnovers, Fam! We looked pretty good tonight!
What a fun second half to watch after a nervous first half.
Missed most of the game doing the work thing, but saw the last 10 minutes, when it was practically over. Excited to watch the tape with a fellow hokie after getting home from the trip - but pumped on the win. EAT SHIT UNCLE BILL. Okay I've had a few more than a few, but best win of the season so far for me, and hopefully a sign of things to come. I'm getting ready to see what we can do against tourney kwality teams one beat down at a time.
I was thinking about you and your Uncle the whole second half. Made it even more fun for me knowing how much fun it would be for you.
I had a great surprise at work today. I renewed my hokie pledge for 2018 and at 4:55 got a call from the Hokie Club that because I had renewed my pledge on National Giving Day (who knew?) that I won three tickets for the game tonight. All I had to do was pick them up at the will call window before the game.
I grabbed two co-workers for the game. We met at the entrance and grabbed the tickets. Section 12. Row A. I had front row tickets behind the Hokies. Best tickets of my life. It was great to be able to see Buzz and the Hokies live in action from about 5 feet away.
Wonderful second half. Now I need to see if I can find a replay and a screen capture on a game replay. Cause I am pretty sure any shots of the bench probably had us in it.
While I am happy about this win, this is not a great game for us RPI-wise. And we have a game Saturday against Ole Miss who just lost to South Dakota State tonight. Oh, also Saint Louis has lost all 3 of their games after beating us, losing badly to Saint Louis, and then to Detroit Mercy (yes that same team we dominated) and tonight they lost by double digits to Western Michigan.. at home..
Our RPI is going to be absolute crap this season, so we better do damn well in the ACC or that loss and our RPI in general is really going to screw us. We play 4 power 5 teams in the OOC schedule (Washington, Iowa, Ole Miss, and Kentucky), and Kentucky is the only team on that list that even seems like they deserve to be a power 5 squad right now. Hopefully we play well in the ACC
EDIT: Sorry to be a debbie downer, I know we just got a good win at home, but that Saint Louis loss still pisses me off to think about and seeing them get dominated tonight just makes that loss feel even worse.
Nothing to be done about a loss we already had, or our RPI.
All we have to do is win the winnable games, and hit the ground running in the ACC schedule. Win a game or two that we're not supposed to win.
That's a lot of hand wringing over things we can't control
St Louis lost to St Louis?
Impressive.
It's kind of like LOLuva and the spring festival. Everyone loses
And coaches always emphasize the importance of not beating yourself.
Fortunately this isn't football - lots of opportunity to make up for a early season loss.
I'm pretty stoked with how that game went last night. To win by 24 against the best team we've faced all year while shooting only 30% from 3 is really impressive. The nights where Bibbs and Hill miss more than 2/3 of their shots are going to be few and far between.
That first half looked very uncharacteristic of a VT offense. Seemed to be trying to play in half-court sets. Second half was much more uptempo and I think it all started with a team effort to crash the boards. Guys getting the rebounds and finding outlets to start 2 and 3 man fast breaks. Was fun to watch and looked like the team played with more control and a looser style.
The first half was my fault - I was able to watch, so I did, but then I had a couple DVR shows come up right at halftime, and I had to stop watching. By the time I was able to see it again, they were up 20
If you have Direct TV, time to upgrade to the Genie. You can record six programs at once, so you can still get your "Dancing with the Bachelorettes" or whatever is more important than Hokie Basketball, and still see the game.
Seriously, though, I talked them into a reconditioned unit for no more than a 12 month "contract", and it was worth it.
Great win last night! Although Iowa's terribly poor shooting in the 2nd half helped a lot, Tech looked much better.
A few things I really liked:
1) The defense seemed much more aggressive and in position; especially in the 2nd half.
2) Blackshear was able to stay out of foul trouble for the most part (I really wanted to see him have better body control this game and I'd say he did).
3) P.J. Horne was in the right place and the right time and looked like he could put in meaningful minutes when Blackshear is on the bench.
4) Clarke is looking healthier!!!
5) Our half-court offense looked much more improved.
6) We sliced and diced to get in the paint to have high percentage shots / layups.
Let's keep improving and win another big one on the road. Go HOKIES!
I think the effectiveness of PJ when given extended minutes was what stood out to me the most last night. I really hope that he can continue to play bigger than he is and help out down low on nights like this when we are a little cold from deep.
I love his aggressiveness in the paint and off the ball. He brings a little something different to the table than Blackshear.
For sure. He's a really good compliment to Blackshear down low. It seems to me like he's got a little bit of the LeDay tough, not gonna back down from bigger bodies, type of play. Something we've all noted that we expect we'll really need in ACC play.
Seemed like Devin Wilson really shut down Bohannon after he hit those first 4 3s. I felt like Buzz made it a point to have primarily Wilson lock that kid down 1 on 1 so he wouldn't have another open shot all game. Anyone else notice that?
I did notice that. I also thought Justin did a great job on Bohannon. They both fought through some pretty solid high screens to stay right with him and put a hand up.
