2019 OG Jesse Hanson has grown up just a few miles down I-81 from Virginia Tech, but he's never considered himself a Hokies fan — yet, with a Virginia Tech offer in hand, that could change soon enough.
The junior out of Daleville's Lord Botetourt HS says he's the son of a pair of Clemson alums, so he's always been more of a Tigers fan than anything else. In an area full of Tech fans (not to mention the odd UVA or West Virginia backer), that's often made him a bit of an outlier.
Recently, Dabo Swinney's success has helped Hanson have the last laugh among his fellow college football enthusiasts. But he certainly remembers the days when the Tigers weren't quite the powerhouse program they are today, so he's developed a healthy respect for Tech's football legacy.
"I definitely heard all about them and got some smack talk when I was a younger kid," Hanson told The Key Play. "It's definitely a great offer to have, an exciting offer to have."
But Hanson only earned that Hokies offer recently, with Justin Fuente and company pulling the trigger just a few days before he made the "easy" drive down 81 to see Tech square off against Pittsburgh on Nov. 18.
"I only live like 45 minutes away, so it's a nice, short trip," Hanson said.
Given his proximity to campus, the visit wasn't Hanson's first to Blacksburg — he says he swung by for a spring practice this year, then followed that up with a camp visit this summer — but it was his first time getting to see a game in Lane Stadium.
"The whole 'Enter Sandman' entrance is always great, how the stadium holds in all the sound and everything," Hanson said. "And the end of the game was insane, with the four stops in a row to keep them out of the end zone on the 1-yard line, that was pretty good."
The game's harrowing final sequence certainly set the stadium (and the Virginia Tech sideline) on edge, and Hanson has no problem imagining how that must've felt for all the fans in attendance — he remembers feeling the same thing just a few weeks prior.
"We actually had a stop like that earlier this season for my team, so I know how insane it is to be in that scenario," Hanson said. "So I guess I was a little more locked in watching it happen, but it was definitely a pretty great experience."
It helped, too, that he got a chance to talk with Fuente at midfield before the game started, and have a quick chat with offensive line coach Vance Vice and tight ends coach/special teams coordinator James Shibest during the pregame meal. Hanson says his would-be future position coach was particularly complimentary about his tape this season as Vice laid out exactly why the Hokies decided to offer him.
"Coach Vice, one thing he's told me repeatedly is how much he loves my toughness and will to grind," Hanson said. "He just likes how physical and tough I am. He told me he needs more guys like me on the team to really change the mentality."
Hanson says the Hokies have yet to give him any indication where he might play on the line should he come to Virginia Tech, though he expects he'd play guard, as that's where most schools interested in his services project him playing at the next level. He stands at about 6'4", 290 pounds, and is listed as a guard on most recruiting sites — he's rated a 3-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite ranking.
Yet Hanson says he mainly plays tackle at Lord Botetourt these days, and occasionally handles snaps during practice, so he's willing to be flexible.
Even if the visit didn't yield much clarity about where the Hokies see him fitting in along the line, Hanson says it did give him first real chance to explore campus and Blacksburg a bit more.
"My dad made a point to show me around campus this time, which I appreciated," Hanson said. "So I got to see the different buildings and memorials and the bookstores, the strip with all the different stores and restaurants. I enjoyed that."
But Hanson is still itching to get back to campus sooner rather than later, and he's already planning on another trip for a junior day event in January.
Though he certainly has other schools he'd like to see in person — he's hoping to visit UVA, West Virginia and perhaps even Iowa State this spring — Hanson's proximity to Blacksburg makes it an easy choice for him to return to Virginia Tech before doing anything else.
"Coach Vice said that it'd be a good time to really see how I fit with the team and different things like that," Hanson said.

We will need a gallon of syrup and a pound of butter.
Apparently I only went to pancake high schools. I started at Liberty-Bealeton home of Wyatt Teller and finished at Lord Botetourt. Here's hoping he makes a seamless cavalier to Hokie transition like myself.
I love watching this kid's tape. Between him, Donavan Beaver, and Whitner, there is some solid OL talent we are in the mix for in 2019. Swing a bigger name like Carroll or Riley Simonds from GA and this could be a great OL class in 2019.
I don't know jack about o-line, but I really liked it too + curious to hear what the experts on this site say. He seemed smart and natural at the position. His feet kept moving, he didn't seem sluggish like a lot of guys his size, and it looked like he understood shoulder angles to get leverage on turning guys (vs. just using his size to bowl people over).
Edit: and to your point about other potential o-line recruits, I am reminded about John Harris from this year. I'm really excited about his potential. I think that guy is going to be really solid.
Would be pretty surprised if we don't land Simonds. Could see it happening soon too
That's cool to hear. It seemed like he was pretty high on us after the visits this year, but wasn't sure if there were some other schools he was high on. Again, him with 3/4 of the other guys I mentioned would make me really happy for an OL class.
Connected to us landing Grant?
Probably because his significant other signed to play softball at Tech in 18
Ahhh, the Dylan Rivers strategy.
Offer all the ladies.

More cushion for the pushin'.
Wait, what are we talking about?
That's what she said....
Might as well pack it up, he gone
Just in case, /s
Don't know if you were referring to this or not but... JaQuan Bailey comes to mind.
Yes that's exactly what I was referring to haha
If the VT coaches like him, then
Dilly, Dilly.
The offense is going to improve leaps and bounds, but we need the offensive line help
If
the VT coaches likefFrench likes him, thenFTFY
I respect either one.
Like I said, Dilly, Dilly.
He still has another year of HS eligibility, so I think other P5 schools will be calling, Clemson included.
He reminds me of HHS product Landon Turner (went to UNC)... very similar in size, very similar style of play. But, like Turner, he isn't seeing anyone of his size or talent level the entire season, so there will be a learning curve.
With all that said, I did get to see this kid play in person... He plays on both sides of the ball and still gets out and moves guys out of the way. It would be nice to land this in-state talent!
Awesome!
Thanks for the in-person perspective.
LB Represent! It's not often there have been recruiting battles over guys from my high school, it'd be great if he stays close to home! In fact one of the last guys I remember was a great HS receiver (and track teammate of mine), but was a victim of a beamerball block as a punter in college—he wound up making that his Facebook profile pic. I guess that's a badge of honor?
As a River rat, I'm not on board with supporting LB athletics. That said, I'm hoping this kid stays home.
Besides, the greatest athletic achievement of James River was Angela Tincher.
My cousin played football and basketball at James river
His comments seem pretty lukewarm on Tech, but hopefully we can rope him in. OL is an ongoing position of need.
James River represent!!
I know for fact that he would be Clemson-bound if he were offered. That's the offer he's looking for. I don't think he's any higher on VT than any of the rest of his offers.
Keep an eye on LB's freshman RB too. He's going to be a beast. Good kid too.

Serious question: is Botetourt county SWVA?
Yes
It's like northern SWVA at best
Most of us in my portion of SWVA think it ends at Montgomery county. This is coming from a Wythe County person. People farther west seem to think it doesn't extend that far. People in Roanoke seem to think it goes to Roanoke. And if you watch the Roanoke news, they think their entire coverage area is SWVA.
I like the Montgomery county version. Especially since Roanoke seems to want to connect itself with the Shenandoah valley.
As a fellow Wythe Countian, SWVA does in fact end at the borders of Montgomery County.
No, nothing north of Roanoke is SWVA.
To my map it is
Yeah my map too. I've lived around here most of my life. I would consider just about anything south of Lexington as SWVA.
of course
Definitely like seeing large OL recruits. This could make the CJF offensive machine get running! Time will tell, and we'll have to wait.
NM
New Mexico?
I just don't understand how you can grow up around the area and not be a fan of the Hokies....
I know a lot of Roanoke natives that somehow grew up LOLUVa fans. I don't get it, but it definitely happens.
It does happen, as you say, inexplicably. Then there are the baffling number of Duke basketball fans in Roanoke. Go figger.
Then there are the baffling number of Duke basketball fans
in RoanokeFTFY
It is inexplicable, but there are a lot of LOLUVA fans in Botetourt. Not that I don't like Botetourt, it is a nice area. Just think it would be better if they kept a tight huddle, over near Hooville.
Everyone watch out for Jesse's teammate, Carlton Emmerson. A big time linebacker prospect
Look out for Hunter Rice, freshman RB. 6''1 190lbs. My guess is that he will be D1 caliber for sure especially if he can get faster
