Cam Phillips out for bowl game.

Huge blow and a reason in my book why redshirt players should be allowed to play in bowl games.

HOKIES

Damn. This sucks. Fuck-dammit.

Feel terrible for Phillips.
Alright. Savoy, Kumah, Patterson & everyone else. Quit fartin around. Step that shit up.

Have to hope Savoy is healthy enough for the bowl game too.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Oh pls (seriously begging pls) don't even start on that shit yet

Debbie Downer alert, so get your downvotes ready.

This bowl game is gonna be ugly.

We already knew we were going to have to have other guys step up ... heck, we've really had to have other guys since the BC game for the most part. Would I rather play OSU-South with Cam? Yeah. But it's not like we should just forfeit at this point.

All of our discussion has been that the D will have to bring its A game to this one, and optimism that the small steps we've taken running the ball would take another step forward. I think all of that is still true.

Maybe this will be the chance to start really working in passes to guys like Cunningham and Keene which have been so sparse this season?

Y'all thought I was joking about that triple option O, didn't ya?

My response to your post is actually that....we need this bowl game to be ugly. We need it to be a defensive slugfest where yards are hard to come by and points are even harder. Tbh I have a bad feeling about winning a shootout with OSU-south (even IF Cam was playing), but I have a good feeling about winning an ugly defensive slugfest.

They'll really get after ya

Agreed

I think Skutt meant ugly from a sense of "our defense probably won't be able to hold up the entire game and our offense might not do them too many favors and i could see it being a blowout" kind of ugly

I know...that was the joke lmao I'm bad at jokes sorry. I just dont like downvoting so I tried to spin it a different way

If Texas can hold them to 13 then it's not outside the realm of possibility for us to keep them around 28. If we can do that we'll have a shot.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

ehhhh, we only scored above 28 4x this year. And then only against P5 competition twice. And even then, one of those was against UNC so...

Color me concerned, to say the least.

I'm not saying we win anyway, but we'll have a shot.

But the Big12 is not exactly known for defense. So who knows, 35 might be a possibility especially if McClease and Holston build off some of the momentum they seemed to be picking up the last two games.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

No big deal. Best of luck to him!

Disagree. Big deal for BOTH us & him (bigger deal for him based on history of Tech players going into the pros coming off injuries or having potential shining careers cut short by said injuries). Can we win? Yes. Absolutely. But this statistically reduces our chances.

I'm just excited to see some of these younger guys have an opportunity to step up in a relatively meaningless bowl game.

We got to 9 wins this season, kept the black diamond trophy, and extended our reign over UVA to 14 years. I am not arsing myself over a bowl game and getting worked up because we don't have Cam. There was never a guarantee he would play if he was healthy.

Yeah. Let's take this opportunity vs. a Big 12 defense (read: not the best we've faced this year) to see what Grimsley, Patterson, Kumah, etc. are going to offer next season. Would rather have Cam but these are valuable reps for the young guys.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yep! No point in getting worked up over losing Cam when he was going to be out next season anyway. To me it was just prolonging the inevitable. We've seen flashes of brilliance from all these guys this season.

Yeah. The thing about "showing us what we're in for next season" is that very notion is a bit premature. We won't know about next season until next season. Bowl game doesn't tell the whole story (very little if at all).

Just wanted to say I found this quote really interesting considering most pre-season prognostications are clearly based on bowl performance (see: USC, FSU and even Penn State this past year).

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Penn State lost their bowl last year and they were highly ranked at the start of this year.

I know they lost but people were impressed with both USC and Penn State because it was a thrilling game. Essentially it turned out to be a "wow that was a great game. Both of these teams must be really good" situation.

No but we do know that Cam Phillips won't be in a Virginia Tech uniform and game experience against a P5 program for young skill position players is invaluable.

I think it can tell you something. VT has about a month between the UVA game and a bowl. If they practice 4 hours a day up to the 20 hour limit for 3 weeks that's 15 practices and pretty matches the number of practices they would get in the spring. For older players those extra practices may not make a huge difference but three weeks of practice for Sean Savoy, Hezekiah Grimsley, Eric Kumah, Phil Patterson and Josh Jackson could give you a look at what next year might look like.

I appreciate you AND I especially appreciate the numbers you posted. I'm probably in the minority in this thought process, however I don't feel that the bowls OR spreen games are very accurate measurements for how well said players (especially newbs) are going to perform for the following season. In fact I think that measurement/belief is on the way out the door.
I believe the final summer scrimmages are the MOST accurate measurements by which to draw comparisons.

How do you feel about putting that to the test? It maybe hard to do with the general silence out of our coaching staff with respect to practices. I can accept your view and could even be convinced it's true.

But this statistically reduces our chances.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Anyone know what Bovada has on the O/U? I'm at work and weirdly that site is blocked. 5 Dimes has it at 63 for this game seems outrageously high especially without Cam and oSu going up against Bud's D.

I need someone to alert me when this gets unlock.... time to bet the house on OSU.

Need to take the -4.5 asap but I fully expect that to be larger with the news of Cam. The under is probably more realistic

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

As much as it sucks to be that guy to root for no one to score, I'm gonna hammer the under if it stays close to 63. I don't like the spread at all in this game.

(add if applicable) /s

even if the spread went to OSU -7.5, I think I would still take it... anything under 7 is a definite bet on OSU for me

Weird how this has been floating around for weeks but the beat writers said nothing of it until today.

Virginia Tech made an official announcement today.

I'm guessing they respected his privacy up until now.

With every passing story it's easier to understand how an Arizona radio guy beat them all to the story about Frank retiring.

They all got spooked by the downvotes on the Foster/aTm thread

Dang, what an unceremonious end to his VT career.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Would have preferred that it came to a close by celebrating some touchdowns and a 1,000 yard season at Camping World.

I feel really bad that he never made his 1,000 yard season. Two years in a row coming just short.

Bowl games are a great time for young players to get in extra time for next year, a primer for next years spring ball. And now apparently they are going to get to play in an early Spring Game, against Oklahoma State.. so thats fun for and exciting for next year. For the actual bowl game? Hold on to your butts.

It's also another game on nationally broadcast TV against a decent team that we don't play that often.

So there's that.

Any word Nijman? I think JJs struggles started when Nijman went out.

Let me start with this, Cam has been a Hokie for 4 full years. I liked him more than Ford or Hodges because he was the afterthought and just doing a damn good job. He always presented himself well and is a great student. Thanks for hangin' ! You made the best decision for your future. Heal by the combines and rock them out. We will truly miss your performances! Awesome!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Facts. Will miss Cam very much.

It's a bit elaborate, but it appears Fuente's ruse is succeeding.

Wait, what do you mean he's actually injured??
