Lost in the shuffle of the big win over GT and the news that Exum Daycare is reopening is this little tidbit:
VT AD Jim Weaver says on TTL that he has requested to play two Thursday night games next year -- one at home, one on the road. #Hokiesβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) September 30, 2013
That was a pretty quick about-face after requesting to NOT have a Thursday night home game last year.
At least one student from a rival institute was not happy with a Thursday night game (from Uni-Watch Blog):
Im a student at Georgia Tech and a big football fan. But I think there needs to be a greater disparity between academics and athletics. Last Thursday nights game against Virginia Tech started at 7:30pm. I wasnt able to make the White Out because I had an exam starting at 6pm that night and the following day I had another exam at 8am, so I had some studying to do.
While its exciting that Georgia Tech was featured on ESPN, academics still happen. The Thursday-night game was a major distraction for someone who, like myself, wanted to focus on studying for midterms. I couldnt find quiet space on campus due to the number of tours through the library for the returning alumni who came down for the game, so I headed to my off-campus apartment to focus. But even then, traffic was rerouted and caused my usual 15-minute commute to turn into 45 minutes of sitting in a car.
Trying to instill a gameday Rah! Rah! spirit on a Thursday night was a giant distraction and an irresponsible move by the institution. For a school that praises academics, it was surprising to see academics take a back seat to athletics that day, a school day.
I understand Im not the usual case in this scenario, but as a student paying a lot for tuition, I want the focus to be my education, not some football team that can only run six plays. Just imagine if a football player had an exam on that following Friday morning, like I did. Would he still have to take it?Im not saying they should do away with the athletics program, but whats wrong with only Saturday football games? Oh, wait money. Thats why.
All I can say about that is:

Comments
This should be written into the contract!!!!
Not sure how our Thursday night games rate, but would guess that they are fairly high on the Thursday night list.
They have got to love going to Blacksburg on Thursday nights. (Just hope they give us more than 5 days off after a ranked opponent....)
LOL.
I'm not sure what everyone else's experiences were, but I recall my professors planning their exams around Thursday night games. I cannot recall ever having an exam the morning after a Thursday night game. Several of my professors even mentioned that they had considered it, then decided to move the exam. Yet another reason why VT > GT.
I had a Real Estate Law class that went until about 6 or so on Thursdays and he refused to cancel class. But he seemed to find it entertaining that about half the class was drinking during his lecture.
All in all, just another good time.
Ha, I had the same teacher/class. We all just sat there and drank whiskey and cokes in the back of class. Then right after class walked over to Lot 5 to tailgate.
Good ole Leon Geyer. I took three of his classes. Odd, frustrating, but educational. I remember getting a 68 on a mid-term and based on his grading curve it was a B+ haha. I left my tailgate, went to class, then headed back to the tailgate. Good times.
I loved Geyer's classes. I definitely learned alot in his classes.
Had his thursday Real Estate Law class the day of the 07' BC game. Went to class and he gave everyone extra credit to all that showed up. Did the same as you. Jumped in and out of class from tailgates. Drank "gator-aid" during class.
just did this on thursday even though it was an away game...
While I sort of hate the hokie bird as a logo, I will say your cornhole board is undoubtedly the best use of it I've ever seen.
Professors usually move the exams. Funny though, a lot of the Friday morning classes had pop quizzes.
I remember the attendance quizzes Friday mornings after the games.
Yeah, every professor that had an exam on a Thursday game day rescheduled it a day before or after when we pointed it out. My Aerodynamics professor, however, had a huge project due the day after a Thursday night game though.....
I had Statics and Autocad tests from 3-5 back to back before the Thursday night game two years ago. Both professors refused to move it. And yes I was drinking during both and that was the best i did on any statics exams that year.
Unfortunately I had a test from 8-10:30 during the Thursday night game.... We requested to have it moved in the first week of classes, no dice.
It also took the entire 2 1/2 hours to take the dang test, so I just caught the last play on ESPN'S gamecast walking out and started yelling when we got the interception to seal it...then watched the entire replay.
But I STILL LOVE Thursday night football!
I saw you're an ISE major, was that the SQC exam? I think Dr. Nachlas gets enjoyment out of making students miss anything fun.
I had an Analytical Chemistry (for majors) exam then Friday morning at 9 am after a Thursday night game again. I ended up getting a 95 on it. Seriously it's time management. Plan to go the game means preparing accordingly. So maybe Friday night the weekend before is study time instead of going out. I can almost guarantee there will be no one in the library at 12 on a Friday.
I agree. A lot of people complain about not having enough time to study. There are plenty of weekends when I stay in, turn on some college football game in the background and get some work done. It's a small price to pay for a much lighter work load during the week.
They best apply for one. And we best wear #AME as well.
While you're at it, reinstate "Stick it In", the painted endzones a la 1999 and black uniforms with more matte helmets.
Along those lines...maybe we could "limit" the alternate unis to the Thursday night games. And stick to the traditional unis for the Saturdays (except maybe a military appreciation day in September!)
I really, really, really like this idea.
Given that we are sliding away from National games with our Saturday schedule, break out alternates on a National stage on Thursday night. Guaranteed exposure, and it can become a thing. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the new uni a week way we are going...so this is a happy compromise.
Black Uni's and a blackout night, especially when home vs. Miami next season
No.
http://www.branding.unirel.vt.edu/brand-expression/colors-typography.html
Edit:Let me elaborate.
Let's compare UGA's Blackout vs. Penn State's White Out:
The UGA game looks empty while the Penn State crowd looks amazing. When HDTVs were first becoming available, Best Buy (or another electronics retailer) was using images from the Penn State White Out to help sell them.
I don't think anyone will be able to compete with Penn State, but our Orange Effect looks pretty fantastic at night:
This is what I want to see when a person turns on a Virginia Tech game in Lane Stadium.
That "S" zone at PSU is a really cool idea. Only seniors are allowed in and according to my sister everybody wanted a ticket there.
I'm thinking about trying to get a ticket in there next season, as I'll be a grad school last year guy. If it happens, I'll wear an orange shirt underneath and when the game starts, I'll rip off the white and stay orange all game.
If you see a guy wearing an orange shirt in the S one night, that's me.
You had me at "No."
Nice visual aids to support your opinion! I agree wholeheartedly on point #2, but my primarily objection is your point #1.
Black may not be part of our uniform colors now, however it was in the past. The school's original colors were black and grey. It wouldn't be such a far fetched idea IMO. Honor history and what not. Also the school does reside int 'Black'sburg. But I do see what you are saying about the reflecting colors though.
If we did some sort of black and gray, I think it would work best for the military appreciation game. After all, we were still a fully military college in 1892.
No need for a blackout. During a night game if everyone wears maroon it will look pretty close to a blackout IMO
You had me until you brought up those black unis.
To be fair, he went to GT to be "One helluva..."
I wonder if he would be bitching if they won.
He made grammar mistakes. #engineer
He should request 2 home Thursday night games. It seems like everyone else hates them, so give them all to us.
Fair point, but the schedule was out before your first class. Blame the professor.
Simpsons gif a better point.
well honestly though...is there anything better than Thursday night in Blacksburg?
No. No there isn't.
Yay
As an engineering graduate -- I can sympathize with the copy-paste. Sucks if your prof doesn't accommodate the schedule. VT academics (or GT in this case) needs to do something since they realize students aren't going to show up.
I don't understand.
Edit: I understand....misread it as students wouldn't show up to the games in favor of academics - which is just silly.
My professors didn't always cancel classes, but never had a graded assignment due on gameday. My ME Lab II TA let us reschedule our lab from Thursday afternoon to Wednesday evening.
Either way, the football schedule is released before classes are signed up for... not hard for teachers to accommodate.
Sometimes it's not feasible to reschedule a class. The lab I TA'd had two sections, both at the same time: either M/W or Tu/Th. Fortunately we never had to deal with this issue, but I'm sure that we wouldn't have offered a rescheduled time for class.
I had a programming exam that started exactly when the game did. Dropped the class and took it during the summer.
I had a test the day of the Maryland thursday night game. Went to the exam, finished around 4, walked out of the room and right to the parking lots. Most professors are real people (or just want to avoid campus traffic on gameday) and reschedule accordingly.
I get the sentiment of the kid's argument- You're paying a bunch of money to get a great education and that should be the focus of an academic institution, not a football game. At the same time, professors should be privy to the type of environment that students will have to study through if you schedule problem sets/exams/projects either on that Thursday or Friday.
I'm not saying it's impossible to study through the environment the student described, rather professors should at least be sensitive enough to work around the schedule. It's not end of the world if students have to take an exam a class earlier or a class later than anticipated.
During my sophomore year of college, my professor scheduled an exam the day after the DMB concert in Lane Stadium. Instead of being a jackass about it, she just moved the exam to the following Monday. I don't see why this is such a big deal for professors.
GT quote reminded me of this:
GT fan appears at ~23 sec. And part II below, just because.
These are classic!
Favorites: FSU Fan and FSU Fan 3 months later.
and, of course...
DANNY COALE CAUGHT THE BALL
Thank you for sharing these, freaking hysterical.
This one is really good as well. Definitely worth a view.
I'd say he captured VT fans pretty accurately in part II. #ITWASACATCH!!!!!
I love the Miami fan...
And the Maryland one was pretty spot on too.
#allthursdaynightgames with #allthefullers in #allmarooneverything
Yea... I had a Thermodynamics test Friday morning, but I still got hammered at Hokie House watching the game and woke up at 6 the next morning to study. I think I did pretty well too.
