I received this link from my mentor who happens to be a USC alum. After reading it, I immediately thought about our own approach as hokies towards finding our new OC. I don't agree with everything he has to say but man is this guy spot on. I wanted to share this with you guys, because I honestly feel we come dangerously close to nostalgic dependencies sometimes. At the very least it is an interesting perspective towards the success and failures of many top programs.

I understand Kiffin is a joke, but I really don't hope they feel like he's their only problem. Starting with they aren't that great.
I was more hoping we would see the similarities in USC trying to duplicate past success by trying to hire a 'certain' type of coach. They thought Lane Kiffin would be the next Pete Carrol because they both worked together in the past and that failed miserably.
I remember when we were looking for a new OC and we only wanted a "ball control" type of guy or a VT connection hire, and I'm not sure that limiting our approach was the right way to get the BEST guy.
Most importantly I'm concerned that when Beamer leaves, we are going to settle for a guy because of his ties to the program or because his philosophy matches our taste buds. I think the game changes and we have to be prepared to approach the next chapter of our program's history looking forward and not backward. It's probably way too soon to be concerned about this but none the less...i'm concerned.
"taste buds" I see what you did there. Turkey leg for subtlety, intentional or not.
".... because his philosophy matches our taste buds"? No pun intended?
So here's what I'm thinking:
I've put in my time on NCAA, I think I'll submit my resume. If Paul Johnson can coach at the FBS level without playing college ball, dammit, so can I!
Don't worry, I'll bench any players that try to beat the Hokies, should the Trojans face them again.
Pause > Team Management > Mass Substitutions > Sub in 2nd String Offense/Defense
I've played that game every year since Joey Harrington was on the cover. Sad to see it go.
It's tough to win without any Reggie bushes etc
That is what I was thinking. At certain programs you just have to have the right touch of luck and find the right players for the right coach at the right time. With today's ever evolving technology, teams like Alabama can become "dynasty" like because it is so easy to find the players that maybe you would have never looked at before and blend them in with the 5 stars and blue chip guys.
If we followed this line of thinking then Beamer wouldn't have been hired. I do think that ties to university matter with HC position. I look at Brady Hoke and that guy is building something in Michigan that matters. I think TCU is going to be the same. Then I look at Urban Meyer and I know he is going to win games (probably championships) but he is also going to be gone soon. Call me nostalgic but I like programs that have storied history not just a history.
I have been reading a lot on USC search and people saying they need someone like Carroll who understood what mattered to young players. While at the same time forgetting what a mess he left the program. I'm not saying USC should only hire someone with ties to the school but for a program in the midst of scandal finding someone who can win and LOVES the school would be best.
USC's cheerleading outfits havent changed since the sixties,
so why should their coach searches ?
I thought they were the same process?
Figure out who looks best in a skirt.
When choosing my destination for higher education, I applied to three schools. My favorite (VT), my safety (Emory & Henry), and a reach school (USCw). The first two were chosen out of a sense of practicality. I only had one real reason to choose USC....
I never received a response from USC.
Looks like they're each telling you that they're actually providing two reasons to go to USCw. Hint: They're just under the U and the C.
Under the S... welllllll let's say Happy Valley
The Song Girls are as good of a reason as any
Best one I could think of....and I really didn't need another one.
Only applied to VT and ODU, but considered very hard applying to USCw just for that exact reason. Glad I'm not the only one.
All I'm saying is I remember the day where all the guys I went too HS with were "dedicated" USC fans. Then Texas, then Boise State, and now Alabama.
I have to confess I find the USCw fight song catchy. *runs for cover*
It is. But it'll never be Notre Dame's!
This... is the only song we know... it's boring and it's slow...
