Auld Lang Syne Missed Three Pointers

For those of you that were with us til the super sad end, welcome to another day in the ACC!! The Hokies come in off a painful gritty struggle against the Orange. All of that aside, things don't slow down for the Hokies, or maybe they do, as they their methodical plodding in state rival tonight. UVA comes to Blacksburg ranked #8 in the country.

The Wahoos have wins over VCU, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and a squeaker over Boston College in their ACC opener. They come in on a 4 game winning streak with their only loss this season against #18 West Virginia. The biggest surprise this year is the offensive efficiency of the Cavaliers. Last season they broke the 80 point barrier only one time and that was against Grambling. Even their 2OT game against Tech only saw them score 78 thanks to Perrantes ball sitting pretty on the rim. This season though, the Cavaliers eclipsed 80 three times already, and have scored less than 70 only five times. The pack line defense always keep teams low scoring (1st Nationally in Avg Points Against) but usually the team has holes on the offensive end. Not so this season as the Cavaliers come in averaging 71.1 PPG, although dramatically less than the 88.8 PPG being put in by the Hokies. UVA leads the all-time series 90-55 but Tech is surprisingly 16-7 against the Wahoos inside Cassell.

The Cavaliers are coached by Tony Bennett, who has a 269-117 record as a head coach. The hard to believe stat is that the win over Boston College to open ACC play was his 200th win at UVA, where he is 200-84. It doesn't seem like Bennett has been coaching the Wahoos for 9 seasons but that is the case. He has taken them to five NCAA tournaments in the past six years.

This is a team that plays defense first second and third and this season seems to have found an offense to match. You guys have heard the term "Pack Line Defense" thrown about regarding UVA on several occasions. So what does it mean? It is a high pressure, man to man defense that sags to the middle of the court. It is designed to prevent penetration by driving the basketball. The "pack line" is an imaginary line two feet inside the three point line that all defenders not guarding the current ball handler are never supposed to be outside of.

The defender that is on the ball handler is expected to be up close, hand in face to create turnovers on the outside. One other critical aspect of this defense that is different than most is that it's designed to deny the baseline. Defenders are taught to position themselves to not allow any baseline penetration, relying on help defense to close down an adjusted drive to the center of the lane. At the top of the post, expect to see defenders attempt to position themselves somewhat in front of the opposing offensive player to prevent the easy pass to the top of the lane.

The key weakness of this defense is if a team gets a large lead on you, than they are free to pass the ball around the perimeter to run clock. Unfortunately with the skill of the players that UVA has recruited, that doesn't happen very often. Tony Bennett draws this defense from his father, Dick Bennett, who is considered the developer of this style of defense while he coached at Washington State University.

Bennett has his team running what is called a Block Mover Offense on the other end of the court. This is a variation of the Motion Offense, allowing the primary ball handler at the top of the key to attempt to use a screen provided by one of two lane personnel near the top of the key. At the point of the screen, the ball handler decides either to drive the lane, kick out to an open shooter or attempt a down low pass to their second lane player, who usually moves across the basket down at the baseline block to create space for the driving guard.

The defensive rotation is what drives the guard's decision making process as he assesses what is in front of him. The guard essentially has three options coming off the pick or can spin back out to reset for another play. The key for the Hokies will be to limit the times where we allow dribble penetration by Kyle Guy or Devon Hall or allow a clean pass into the lower lane player for an easy layup.

What does that mean for the Hokies?

The Hokies should come out trying to speed up the tempo of this game to create open looks. If they are not able to do that then each possession takes on that much more significance against one of the best defenses they will face all season. UVA is allowing the fewest points per contest this season and is also holding opponents under 30% from the perimeter.

The Hokies need to wash away the struggles of the last few contests and realize that these are now the games that count the most. A renewed focus needs to be evident, as they have struggled with their perimeter shooting since the second half of the Kentucky game. The Hokies are 21-76 from outside in that stretch, or 27% which is about half of where they were the rest of the season which was 111 for 233 or almost 48%.

The Hokies will not find the size challenge nearly as evident as the Syracuse game was. UVA has two bigs but neither is the focal point offensively or defensively. Outside of those two, the Wahoos run a couple of forwards out that are 6'8 and 6'9 so it's still advantage UVA height wise but those same two run 205 lbs and 195 lbs which Tech has guards that weigh in bigger than those two.

Wahoos Backcourt

Kyle Guy, #5, 6'3, 165 lbs Sophomore is leading the Wahoo's in scoring at 15.7 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.2 SPG. He is knocking down his perimeter shots at 46% on over six attempts per game. He also shoots 84% from the free throw line. Most people may have trouble recognizing him as he decided over the summer to remove the man-bun.

Senior Devon Hall, #0, 6'5, 210 lbs is averaging 11.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 2.8 APG while shooting almost 48% from the inside, 44% from outside and 88% from the line as well. Expect to see Hall and Guy rotate off the top of the key, working to find each other open on the perimeter after initial drive attempts inside. These are the only two Wahoo's in double figures so far this season.

The next closest Wahoo to double figures this season is Ty Jerome, #11, 6'5, 192 Lbs, Sophomore, who rotates effectively with Hall and Guy. He comes in averaging 9.7 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.5 APG, and 1.2 SPG. Jerome is shooting a cool 46% from both inside and out, along with having hit all 11 of his free throws this season so far.

Senior Nigel Johnson, #23, 6'1, 185 Lbs, is averaging 6.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, and 1.2 SPG. He is a graduate transfer from Rutgers, and previously played at Kansas State prior to Rutgers.

Freshman Deandre Hunter, #12, 6'7, 212 Lbs is averaging 6 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 1.1 APG. He is a change of pace infusion when Guy or Hall needs a breather. He is averaging 15 minutes per contest so far.

Wahoos Frontcourt

The Senior theme continues with Isaiah Wilkins, #21, 6'8, 205 Lbs who is the Step Son of Dominique "The Human Highlight Film" Wilkins. He is averaging 7.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.3 SPG and 1.4 BPG while also shooting almost 58% from the floor and 80% from the line. As you can see from his stat line, Wilkins is a bit of a Human Highlight reel himself, with solid numbers in almost every statistical category both offensively and defensively. If he could be forced to the bench for any significant amount of time it would be a big blow to the Wahoos all around.

Sophomore Mamadi Diakite #25, 6'9, 195 Lbs, rotates with Wilkins as the Power Forward. He is averaging 6.1 PPG and 3.8 RPG while shooting 57% from inside and 77% from the line.

Jay Huff, #30, 6'11, 215 Lbs, Freshman, rotates the other big position with Jack Salt, #33, 6'10, 240 Lbs across 33 minutes per contest.

What to expect from the Wahoos?

The Senior and Sophomore classes are critical for this Wahoo team, as they account for the top six scorers on the roster this season. Starting with Guy, these six players account for over 75% of all scoring for the Wahoos. Three Seniors and three sophomores each averaging over 6 points per contest.

As a team the Wahoo's shoot a respectable 39% from outside but when you get in close you realize that the top three shooters are hitting 6 of 13 attempts per game or 45% from outside. In a game where points are at a premium

The starting five for this team is also skilled at stealing the ball from opponents, with four out of five averaging more than 1 steal per game. They combine for 5.5 SPG as starters, and as a team force 14 turnovers per contest.

One surprise this season is the lack of production from Jack Salt and Jay Huff, the two true Bigs on this roster, the first 6'10 and the second 7'1. They combine for 8.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and less than one assist in over 33 minutes per contest. Huff's playing time especially seems to vary dramatically contest by contest, with his most minutes being 24 against Austin Peay all the way down to zero, as Bennett has left Huff on the bench for five of their contests this season.

Shots from the foul line come at a premium though for UVA, averaging just over 15 attempts per game, so barring a significant change, this shouldn't hurt us dramatically. Part of this is their high offensive efficiency but also the fact that they only pull in nine offensive rebounds per game on average this season so not a lot of second chance points for the Cavaliers. One thing to keep in mind is that five of UVA's top six scorers this season all shoot better than 76% from the free throw line so in close games Nigel Johnson is the only regular who shoots poorly.

The flip side of this coin though is that the Cavaliers allow the 5th fewest free throw attempts in the nation, averaging less than 13 attempts. Considering the Hokies are still averaging over 25 attempts per game, it will be something to watch for as this game gets going. Whichever of these teams keeps it closer to their average would have a big advantage in what should be a low scoring affair.

The Hokies

The Hokies need to be the utmost in efficiency in this game on the offensive end. UVA only turns the ball over 9 times per contest on average so the Hokies will not be able to count on significant extra possessions this way. The UVA opponents also do very poorly in the rebounding category so the Hokies will need to be wary as opponents only manage 31 rebounds per contest, and of that only 8 on the offensive end. UVA is in the top 10 nationally in 9 defensive categories including first nationally in fewest shots allowed, fewest interior shots attempted, fewest assists allowed, and points per game.

The Hokies will have to find holes in the zone and they have to be able to penetrate the zone on the dribble to create gaps or they will play directly into the Wahoo's game plan. The Wahoo's do allow opponents to attempt 22 perimeter shots per game, but as previously discussed they only allow 29% to go in. The Hokies will need to be able to hit their shots or force their way to the line. Last season's win saw the Hokies go 8-26 from outside but hit 20-26 free throws which played a deciding factor.

Clarke, Blackshear, and Horne need to play a much larger role against UVA than they managed against Syracuse. If they are able to establish position in the lane it will open up shooters when the Wahoo's collapse to the center.

Highlight of the Syracuse Game

Highlight of the game goes Nickiel Alexander-Walker, who went 7 for 13 from the field and 4 of 8 from outside. Honorable mention goes to Chris Clarke, who managed 10 rebounds going up against the much bigger Orange roster.

In Closing

This game is going to come down to three things, dribble penetration for both teams, execution at the free throw line, and offensive rebounding by the Hokies. If the Hokies are the better team at these three areas, than they will even up their ACC record. Get the better of the Wahoos in two out of three areas and give yourself a chance. Let UVA win these areas and it's another long night in Cassell for us fans. The Hokies will definitely need to win the offensive rebounding battle to get more shots and second chance points against the Wahoos to keep us in this game.

Whichever team gets to the rim more consistently with the ball will do one of two things, run up the score on baskets or ramp up the free throw attempts, which could go a long way in deciding this contest. One last thing that will be critical for the Hokies is that Justin Bibbs needs to find his shot from outside to keep the Wahoo's honest in guarding him outside. This could be a key factor in allowing Robinson, Clarke, NAW the needed space to drive into the lane against the Cavaliers.

It's a home game, they failed to deliver in a tough situation on Sunday, and its against UVA. All the recipe for these guys being amped up, now Buzz just needs to keep them focused. I believe we have the talent, size and speed required to break this defense tonight. It obviously would be better with Ahmed Hill heating up from outside to give the Cavaliers fits. Blackshear and Robinson at the free throw line late in this one are the difference.

Tech wins 73-70, hanging on against a late miss from the perimeter by Guy.

Yep, tried to indicate that with the below note regarding collapsing to the center leaving open shooters. Your line was much clearer and well said.

Well my wife is going into labor tonight with baby #2. I'll be trying to check in on this one from the L&D room. Hoping for a healthy baby and hokies victory tonight FAM!

Best of luck to you and your wife for a healthy Hokie! Congratulations.

I hope you get there with more time to spare than we had for #2. Arrived at the hospital 30 min before birth on Thanksgiving day. The perfect day for a li'l gobbler.

7 minutes to game time and the crowd is really thin. Hoping it fills up in here.

Is coronavirus over yet?

It's about what you're going to see tonight. It might get a little fuller between the baselines, but the student section is as full as it'll get.

Little Fuller? THERES ANOTHER ONE?!

I cannot wait for the day when Babcock is the ACC Head. Huge Rivalry, and it's not even on TV???? Instead all the Fox Sports channels have Miami vs Georgia Tech? And it's on at 8:00 on Winter Break???

Why are we so horrible in half court offense?

This games been a let down so far I had higher hopes for tonight

It just seems like we are relying on isolation play far too much tonight, the ball movement is almost nonexistent.

Are we ass? Does Buzz need to go bald again?

Hairy Buzz still freaks me out.

Seth Allen and LeDay were very clearly way more responsible for the team's success than anyone wanted to admit. This looks nowhere near a tournament team.

For those of you who are unable to watch:

Another lackluster half of basketball (3 of those in a row if you are counting). Line up changes are baffling. Shots not going in. When we push the pace we get decent looks or get to the line, but for some reason we seem to be intentionally slowing things down. Really disappointing half.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I can't believe how silent Hill and NAW are on offense. Invisible in the first half.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

NAW sat a bunch with 2 fouls

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

We are lucky to be down 12. Little to no ball movement, not punishing the bigs for going above the arc to defend; Bede missed a wide open pass down in the post because he got intimidated by the bigs rushing towards him above the arc. Move the ball, emphasize slashing to the rim, and let the 3's come when they become available. And on the defensive side put a hand in the mans face, they are going around the pick and rolls so half assed it's infuriating. As a great scholar once said: "Hand down, man down"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Keep attacking on offense. I am 100% okay with picking on their big guys who hedge the screens and getting a few more cheap fouls on them.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

That was a couple inches away with being the play of the year to this point.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

This team is set up as a sink or swim team that relies primarily on hitting from the perimeter. Hard for that to be consistently effective in a conference like the ACC, but don't have the players to play otherwise.

Would like to see them play through blackshear more on the low post in the second half. I think he's got a skill advantage on the UVA bigs and get some high percentage looks, draw fouls which causes foul trouble and gets us in the bonus quicker for easier points, and eventually opens the perimeter up for the shooters so their taking fewer contested and off-balance shots.

I do think this shows the importance to have some size in order to have some semblance of an inside game. College kids just aren't consistent enough shooters to have an offense that relies solely on that, especially when you play against well-coached defensive teams with as good or better personnel.

We took 6 threes in the first half. I would love to see us take more threes and open the court up. We got in this whole by trying to play through KJ.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Played thru him on the perimeter, not down low. Made it easy for UVA to stretch their D to the three point line. It wasn't like we were turning down open three's. They were in their shorts as soon as they got over half court.

Needed to move the ball more, and force them to double team some.

Wouldn't have mattered either way though. UVA is a much better "team", that forces their style of play on their opponent. I don't think this Tech team is good enough to compete against better personnel that also plays a very disciplined style, just a bad match up for them.

Will be very interesting to see where they go from here. Need to be able to bust out of this funk and get back to how they played against UK, when they looked like a certain tourney team. A lot of regrouping necessary.

UVA is getting away with a lot of fouls despite being called for a bunch too.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

These camera angles pissing anyone else off more than the actual game?

Probably not more than the actual game but yes

Fair.

13th turnover to an open UVA 3.

In the moment this is going to sound like an excuse but really it's just a complaint. I can't believe we're playing our biggest rival right in the middle of winter break on a Wednesday night at 9 p.m. That's some crap and it's really hard to get fans in the seats for that type of game. ACC really dicking us over.

Let's Go...

They seem to do it to us quite a lot. Guess we're a little too far North to catch a scheduling break.

Ehhh... are you watching the game? Maybe it's good that everyone isn't watching.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Yea I mean we are getting blown out now but it would have been nice to have a raucous crowd at least.

Let's Go...

The offensive gameplan has become just find enough space to drive and hope to draw a foul on their bigs.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

It's like the refs get sucked into the aura around UVA that they're this amazing defensive team and let them get away with more because of that

A whole lot like Carolina

That was an ass-clinching pass from Clarke.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

J-Rob has to see Kerry trailing him and make that pass instead of going for a layup against two bigs. This game is so frustrating. Hate how UVA plays.

I'd be ok with just chucking up threes at this point. Offense looks lost.

I think the players thought they were a tournament team. The results on the floor are saying otherwise. This team is barely an NIT team at this point.

Huh, so that's what that feels like. Sure would suck for 14 straight years, at least we can snag a win or two once in a while.

Were gonna need a serious red Forman ass to boot motivation from the coaches to get this team in gear or this season is gonna be hard to watch

Turning this off. Team gave up so I'm giving up. Hopefully Buzz goes back to the drawing board. Early subs, trying to play out of the post, half assed 2/3 court traps giving up easy points. 0 second half adjustments... in fact, he just doubled up extra hard from his first half game plan.

I'll be back with a better attitude tomorrow. Good night.

I think he will get there tho. Much to like about NAW. But tonight Blackshear is the only Hokie playing well.

That was a huge overreaction by the fanbase that I didn't buy for a minute. Watch UK the last few years? Those kids are one and done.

At least with Hokie basketball it's only a 2 hour stomach ache.

Leonard. Duh.

Reading comments here and other social media. This wins, bed time. Stay warm.

Well looks like I will be adjusting my expectations to a 6-10 record in ACC play and a NIT berth. This team has completely withered in conference play so far. The turnovers and sloppy play are becoming the norm rather than the exception and nobody seems to be able to shoot the ball lately. The defense is looking worse each game. Hopefully I am wrong, but it looks terrible right now.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Why the hell does Buzz seem like he doesn't care this year? Would expect to see him throwing a tantrum on the sideline after that shit performance but didn't even see him sweat a drop during this game. Seems like he doesn't really care this year? Or is that just me?

Probably just you.

He certainly has lacked his normal intensity. I have seen him put his fingers to his neck several times throughout the year, I'm wondering if he was told to keep his blood pressure down.

F-it. Not happy. Not very composed for a veteran team. hope this leads to some much needed improvement. Did not create good shots. This team has a long way to go to play to the talent we have. Starting to think we are not a tournament team this year. Love Buzz but something is not clicking. Bakers, EW small, Knob, and Woodford down, and still not okay with this. Time to sleep it off. Hope the team does, and Buzz figures it out. F-it.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

No words for the incoherrent play we witnessed tonight. I put alot of this on Buzz. He probably was thinking learning moment but any other season he would have been almost naked on the sideline and the color purple at that. Too often this season this team has been completely unprepared from tbe tip and it apparently was only basic talent level that got them past most of the OOC rather than team cohesion and strength of will. I know that UVA is a great team this season with their new found offense but I can hardly recall being more unimpressed by the effort displayed in a rivalry game in the last two decades.

Agreed. Buzz hasn't looked fired up at all

I have a not great theory that the Kentucky game was such a hyped game for these players that when they lost, they haven't quite bounced back from it yet and maybe they won't all season. Aside from the turnovers, we played so competitively against Kentucky and I know the team believed they could pull it out.

I haven't seen that team since that game. A real lack of poise and execution sadly.

Let's Go...

I agree that something seems to have gone out since tnat game, even touched on it in my pregame write up the difference statistically since then but I expected a bounce back that just doesnt seem to be forthcoming. If they arent careful, the game against Pitt may be the who isnt going to end up in last place in the ACC game.

Not a good night all around, and didnt like the body language from the players when sitting two rows from the court. Hoping someone can step up to provide more leadership because they look lost right now.

The hope is that athlough the past 4 games have been lackluster performances, 3 of those teams (Presbyterian, Cuse, and UVA) either play a super slow tempo or a unqiue 2-3 zone. The rest of the teams we play that year wont play thay slow or that much zone.

Hopefully we can beat the worst team in the ACC Saturday to regain some momentum.

The problem is that its getting to be a blueprint to beat this team doing just that so with the talent on any ACC squad we may see them adopt that style of play against the Hokies, if only enough to jump out to a big lead. Playing a slow zone defense is one of the easier styles to adopt, especially if it gets you the W

I love Buzz, let me preface with that; but at some point we need a coach not a life counselor. Teaching these boys how to balance a checkbook ain't gonna do jacksh!+ when it comes to the pick and roll. Just feel like he's not as passionate this season for some odd reason. Disclaimer: not putting the blame all on him.

Been saying the same thing all night. Noticed it in the Saint Louis game, and have seen it several times since then, especially in the losses. Just don't see the same fire. As you said, this loss isn't all on him but he certainly needs to take a large part of the blame because these guys did not come out very motivated

He got us to our first NCAA bid in 10 years last year after numerous years in the bottom of the acc. He had two stellar seniors graduate this year. Cut the man a damn break. I agree I expect more out of the team, but we aren't elite.

He addressed this in the presser

"I didn't think ranting and raving, considering what was transpiring, was the right way to help them."

We've gotten used to fired up Buzz, and it's great to see. That Buzz wasn't there tonight and it was strange. But he got us to the tournament last year and it's not out of the picture for this season either. I'm going to trust his judgement.

I don't use this term lightly and I'm not just in a pissed off overreacting mood either so here goes;

This team is soft.

There. It's been said. We've seen it all year from the inconsistent play, lack of effort, and flat out not showing up for some games. They have no real sense of effort to even play defense, no offensive cohesion if they can't run. They have no front court presence (Blackshear, while offensively skilled, is more of a finesse player). Another big would help or at least someone that plays big (like LeDay or Jae Crowder from Buzz's past teams). And probably the biggest issue tying it all together, they have no leader. No one that says "this is my team, things are in a jam right now, follow me to victory".

This teams needs a gut check bad. If they don't win the next two games, this season is toast. Buzz might as well start playing the younger guys more minutes to prepare for next year (he probably should do more of that anyway but that's a discussion for another time)

Very well worded and I agree 100%. Disappointing start to the season for sure. Certainly time to turn it around, but that time is running out very quickly or we may be looking at about a 5-6 win ACC season

Was at the game... I don't love what I'm seeing out of this bunch. I don't see the fire, passion, energy, etc. that I would expect from a Buzz Williams team.

We left with 5 minutes to go scratching our heads wondering what we had just witnessed on the home court... embarrassing really.

Edit: it has been stated before, but I think we all grossly undervalued how much the leadership of LeDay and Allen brough to this team. There doesn't seem to be anyone in that category on this current roster at this time.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Anybody have any theories for lack of buzz intensity this season?

He's taking the a&m DC opening, clearly.

Hey guys. Didn't get a chance to watch the game or monitor TKP. What'd I miss?
