Glimmer
Buzzketball goes to Notre Dame with a chance to even their conference record and take the next step to a return to the tournament. The Hokies may be on the road but their opponent is missing three major components. Notre Dame comes in with the same ACC record as the Hokies but their seasons seem headed in opposite directions.
The Irish have wins over LSU and #6 Wichita State out of conference. In the ACC, the Irish started with three wins over Georgia Tech, NC State, and Syracuse. At about that time, the injuries started to impact the Irish, who have gone on a four game skid with losses to Georgia Tech, UNC, Louisville, and Clemson. The Irish will be missing Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell, and D.J Harvey due to injuries. Those three represent 42.9 points per contest or almost 56% of all scoring for the Irish this season. No matter how deep your bench, that is a tremendous challenge to overcome.
This will be the ninth meeting between the Hokies and Fighting Irish. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 7-1. The one win is historic though, as it was an overtime victory to give Virginia Tech the 1973 NIT championship. The series against Notre Dame started back in 1972. The Hokies lost to the Irish last January 76-71.

The Fighting Irish are coached by Mike Brey, in his eighteenth year at the helm of Notre Dame.. In eighteen years, his team has won 20+ games thirteen times. He has led them to the NCAA Tournament twelve times, with two elite eight appearances. Notre Dame has been to the post season in all but one season under Brey.
Defensively, the Fighting Irish have gone from a steady man to man pressure defense up until a couple seasons ago to being a very situationally based defensive team. This means against Tech we may see man to man and probably some high perimeter zone with defensive players switching off over or under screens to prevent quick penetration by the Hokies guards. The other aspect that we may see a lot of is to double team Blackshear in the post to prevent him easy access and force him to make a good perimeter pass. If this team begins trying to utilize this double team, expect to see Clarke take the interior pass at the free throw line and then force Notre Dame to decide how to approach him.
Offensively, Notre Dame runs a four out, one in motion offense very similar to the Hokies. They don't rely on significant size on the floor to accomplish what they intend to. This makes this contest a pretty even matchup. The Irish shoot almost 22 three point attempts per game, hitting on 8 of them. This means the Irish find almost 24 points a game from behind the perimeter. The Hokies will have to be able to close out on the perimeter to keep the Irish from hitting their usual 38% from outside. That said, they still manage 50 more points per game between the line and inside the arc. 14 of those points come from the line where as a team they are shooting 76% on the season. Expect the Irish to go after the basket with whatever the Hokies give them in terms of openings and available looks.
What does that mean for the Hokies?
#tbt pic.twitter.com/1fXAH4LIynβ VT Men's Basketball (@HokiesMBB) January 25, 2018
The Hokies need to force the issue inside. Using Clarke at the high post and forcing Notre Dame to account for Blackshear on the blocks will consolidate the Irish defense, allowing good open looks outside. Driving to the basket or finding Blackshear down low so he can work inside will be critical to this contest.
The Hokies need to cause problems for the Notre Dame starters in terms of spacing and forcing fouls. Notre Dame had relied on four players to play over 30 minutes per contest and had four others that clean up the rest of the minutes. Now they have been forced to dig into a limited bench and rely on those not injured to pick up quite the load. The more minutes forced on the end of the bench, the easier the Hokies will find getting to the basket or hitting open shots.
The Hokies are going to need to hit their perimeter shots as well considering how well the Irish shoot from outside. They should be able to get open looks as the Irish allow 22 attempts per contest and opponents in the
ACC are shooting 36%.
This game will be as high paced as these teams want it to be. By this, expect to see bursts from each side and explosion on transition opportunities. Both teams look to get back to prevent transition though so the Hokies need to limit giving the ball right back if they get a stop.
Fighting Irish Backcourt

Temple Gibbs, (#2), 6'3, 200 Lbs Sophomore Guard is having to give the Irish all he has due to the injuries. He is averaging more than 40 minutes a game in their last five ACC contests but essentially never leaves the floor now. He is averaging 14.9 PPG, 3 RPG, and 3.2 APG but has scored at least 18 in three of the last five games.

Rex Pflueger (#0), 6'6, 202 Lbs Junior Guard is averaging 8.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 2.9 APG. Pflueger comes in averaging 20 MPG but has struggled to produce with the increased minutes he is seeing due to injuries. He is considered Notre Dames best all-around shooter, but the numbers tell a slightly different story, hitting only 20% from outside and 78% from the line in their last five games.

Nikola Djogo (#13) 6'7, 203 Lbs Sophomore Guard has seen his time dramatically increase from about 11 minutes per contest to almost 25 minutes, and has doubled his production as well, but contributed zero points in their most recent loss to Clemson.
Fighting Irish Frontcourt

Martinas Geben, (#23), 6'9, 255 Lbs Senior Forward is the only other starter not out due to injury so he has been asked to pick up some of the slack. He is averaging 10 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.2 APG and 1.2 BPG. Fortunately the Hokies have Blackshear down low to contend with this Irish big.

John Mooney, (#33), 6'9, 245 Lbs Sophomore Forward is now playing a major role for the Irish now that Colson has been injured. He is playing more than 20 minutes a game after averaging around 10 prior to the injuries. His production has grown from 3 PPG to almost 8.2 PPG. He is also grabbing 5-6 rebounds per contest now.
What to expect from Notre Dame?
The Irish will come out playing their new found short bench focused on shooting from outside while occasionally feeding their center the ball to keep the Hokies honest.
They don't really have the size to dominate Tech like most of the other ACC programs and with their bench using fewer players than even Buzz has going out there, expect to see a slower paced game plan from the Irish.
2-3 Zone defense all game. They will attempt to disrupt passing lanes at the top of the key but will collapse into clog the lane with penetration. With this they are hoping to make Tech make mistakes with the ball as they deal with a lot of bodies inside. They are also looking to avoid fouls at all costs.
The starters are not terrible from the free throw line but almost everyone else on the roster is. The depth of their perimeter shooting is also limited to the starters. Beyond those five or six players it is a significant drop off with the rest of their roster.
The Hokies
Tech needs to keep a high paced tempo for as long as they can to start the game. Three Irish guards have played a majority minutes of their last five contests so fatigue has to drift in at some point. Scoring in transition could easily be how Tech separates themselves in this contest.
The Irish zone will only help them slow the game, which allows their players time to recover. Tech needs to be ready to break the zone quickly. Getting the ball down low to Blackshear and letting him work their bigs for fouls could turn this game dramatically in the Hokies favor.
Hopefully Clarke and Blackshear can continue to grab rebounds like they have in recent contests. Notre Dame excels at rebounding even with the recent injuries.
Hitting perimeter shots will be another key factor. Buzz needs Bibbs to reappear from his disappearing act and really help the Hokies put some distance between themselves and the Irish.
One critical area the Hokies must improve as it could as it continues to haunt them game to game. They have to not turn a great defensive play immediately into a poor offensive play. They cant go from getting a stop or creating a turnover to throwing the ball away. Tech did a great job in not turning it over against UNC so they need to tap into that again for this contest.

Buzz got a great workout in, just ask his dry cleaner. We finally had the return of the acrobatic coach we know and love. MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE VIDEO on the Tweet.
In Closing
Expect to see a faster paced game than the Irish would like but maybe not as fast as Buzz would prefer this evening. The Irish using a short bench and will be susceptible to foul trouble. Hopefully Tech can inflict more damage here than it takes.
Game could get a little chippy. The Irish are not a program used to struggling and so this string of injuries has their players quite on edge. Clarke will likely have words with someone on the Irish at least a couple times during this contest with how he approaches the basket.
One other major key for the Hokies is that Blackshear avoid foul trouble. We saw how important that is to the success of this team in the UNC game where he didn't get his first foul until there was about 3 minutes remaining in the game.
Tech wins 88-73, by hitting enough from outside and then making critical free throws down the stretch, which is what they didn't do last year against this squad at the end of the game.

Comments
LET'S GO...
HOKIES!!!!
Gotta come out and take advantage of these injuries. I know ACC road wins are hard to come by but this one is set up for us pretty nicely. Hopefully we can keep some momentum going from UNC and come in to take care of business
Run to the fight!
We better win this. I feel dirty having rooted for Duke earlier and I'm pissed they choked away a win against LOLUVa. Now I need a blowout of and to cleanse my palette. Let's do this, boys!!
Holy shit can this OSU game end
What's with the Arkansas fans dressed as sharks? Sorry if I missed something. I googled "Arkansas shark fans" and several of the top results noted their top 10 placement in rankings of dumbest fan bases... so maybe its as simple as that.
Sharkansas
makes sense with all those state beaches?
Well the next state over has the Lake of the Osharks?
No idea but it made me think of Anthony Jesilniks "shark party."
Wow KJ with a block, then beautiful extra pass for a Hill 3.
The boys are playing very hard so far tonight. Love the energy and obviously it helps that we're hitting 3's.
That call on Blackshear was crap. He had the ball and the Irish guy grabbed him as he stole the ball
Yeah that looked like a terrible call live but they never showed a replay so I wasn't sure. Hopefully he can stay with 1 foul until the 2nd half, he's played some very good D so far
Officials bailing Notre Dame out with these second chance calls after the Hokies have the ball
Ref from midcourt with the bailout call that time, unbelievable. Its netted the Irish 8 points so far
Wow one went the Hokies way
There was Clarke gettting into it like I thought might happen. BIG KJ stepped in fast though
Wow these refs are really calling things tight so far, but seems to be only when we're on defense.. either way, love the heart we've played with tonight. Gotta keep things going
That sequence to end the half is how you lose games. Just incredibly stupid basketball
Ridiculous. Pretty sure that happened last year too
Happened against Wake at the end of the first half in the first round of the ACC tournament and it put them up like 7. We actually came back to win that game though. Terrible end to the half by us there.. Contested 3 and then we give up a freaking half court heave to get it to single digits. Such BS. We're playing way better than them we need to be winning by more
Hey guys, does anyone know how many crucial injuries ND has? For some reason ESPN isn't bringing that up. /s
What did you think they would talk about? Honestly if those guys were there they might be blowing us out. Colson by himself would have given Kerry three fouls in the first half
I'm over that storyline. We sent Zach, Seth, Bibbs, Roccaforte and a High Tech out for a few games last year and nobody showed any sympathy.
Fuck those half court threes to end the half.
Just smell the home cooking when the Irish only have three fouls in the first half
Yes that 3 at the buzzer hurts, but I'd gladly take VT up 7 at half if you told me that before tip. Don't @ me
That last sequence sums up VT in so many ways for me.
Just like when you think you can get a good advantage going with momentum it not only fails but actually goes the other teams way.
we should have played for the last shot of the half so that on a miss they would have no chance for even a half court heave
We haven't played that well on offense and we're ahead. Feel pretty good but if we'd actually finish at the rim, especially Blackshear, we could be up 20
feed the BIBBS!!!
NAW needs to slow down, like a lot
And here we go again. Should have been jump ball and to the Hokies and instead its a foul on Tech to give the Irish another offensive possession
They look so damn sloppy I cannot believe we are maintaining a decent lead.
God these refs have been effing terrible tonight. That's the only thing keeping ND in this honestly. We're outplaying them by a lot
I'm all for letting players play through rough patches, but NAW has made several bad decisions in the last few possessions... would like to see Buzz sub him out for a few minutes, let him reset, then get him back out there
Why am I not surprised that was called a charge even though it was evident that it was not
Wow the whistles
Okay fuck these refs. this is ridiculous
This would be a twenty five point lead if not for the help whistles
So they didnt foul Bibbs but Kerry with arms straight up gets called
There is a refusal to call fouls on ND.
Robinson gets elbowed in the face and no call
That was terrible from Clarke and led to a three
Just wish we could lose the stupid
Letting their top scorer shoot wide open shots? Color me shocked
So is this one we should win but will likely lose??? Seems like it unless we clean it up.
Another jump ball that became a foul
Absolute bullshit officiating
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
I'm sorry, when did he even have possession for there to be a foul?
Can believe they called something on ND.
i'll break my rule about ref commentary... but damn, the refs are making it hard to defend our basket
Holy fuck this whole thing is rigged.
Drives me nuts when Blackshear picks up dribble eight feet from the basket when he gets position in the lane. And then picks up a dumb foul on other end and has to go to the bench
i hate it when he gets fouls out near the 3 point line. drives me crazy
have we forgotten to feed BIBBS?
Just tuned in... based on the comments I should turn it back off and save myself the blood pressure
Wow didnt realize the manager teams were ranked and ours is top five and just beat the number one
Wilson all ball on that rip, foul called
Not sure why we havent seen Horne. I would think this would be a good gane for his skill set
Bless NAW
Didnt guard Gibbs again. Drives me nuts. Just have Bibbs cover him full time
Is it just me or have the last 6 minutes been an eternity? We've slowly gone from blowing the game open, to just .... blowing
Not much positive to say about the last 5 minutes
This is an all-time choke job in the making. No I will not blame the refs.
16 of the Irish last 22 points have come with official assistance, make that 17 of 23
19 of 25
Wow that was some BS and now three free throws
Did he eve touch him? Phlueger really missed his calling as a soccer player, he's been flopping all freaking night
Christ Almighty, they fouled the 3 point shot
This team loss all concept of fundamentals late against the Irish every year
THAT'S NOT A FUCKING FOUL YOU FUCKING BLIND ASSHOLE
Wow even got bad enough the TV analyst is tired of the whistles
Notre Dame has 8 fouls in the game and we have what 11 in this half?
It's not the refs fault we stopped hitting shots offensively
FUCK
Fuck all the things
How is that a good call when the guys feet are moving
These refs andannouncers are sucking Irish dick like Catholic priests
Easy....
Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
Blackshear drops the shoulder... Can't complain about that charge, and now he's gone.
Stupid careless play
Blackshear contacted him with the basketball first as he brought it around.
You drop that shoulder and you're getting a charge most plays. It's all the refs will see, right or wrong.
So basically a foul on every position....and of course it was only two
Welp
And then two Hokies fight each other to give the Irish the lay in
Two guys alone for the rebound. Cancel each other out, allows an easy layup.
This kind of play loses you games. You must have situational awareness better than that
Turned it off.
Man I hope not.
Edit: But for real I hope not.
Can they please start calling this both ways
This is a team capable of going on huge runs at a fast pace and draining tons of threes, and yet, every time the pressure's on and they have a possession where they NEED to score, I have absolutely zero faith in them doing so.
starting to see lazy passes
Well this fucking blows. We have more fouls this half than they have for the whole fucking game. If anyone says the refs didn't get them back in this game then you're lying to yourself
How big is that three to end the half right now?
Where was the moving screen there?
Clarke makes good play but instead of throwing it off an opponent he hits the backboard with it
Notice even the analysts didnt even suggest going to the rim because they even k ow Tech wont get a foul call
How is that not a technical foul on Gibbs there?
Clarke is so impressive and so unimpressive the same half!
I have no idea how Clarke recovered to get that put back. Wow
Dude is always the fastest off the floor. It is an amazing thing; let's him play bigger than 6-5.
CC has the quickest jump back, spring back, whatever you call it of anybody I've ever seen
Incredibly surprised they didn't just call the foul on Clarke instead.
Holy cow Chis Clarke!
The Clarke show to end the game
Guts guts guts. This game could not end fast enough.
Phew π π π π
It's times that those when Chris shows how much of a freak athlete he is.
Good Bad and Ugly
We won in spite of the refs, everyone breathe!
Wow. What a great win those refs tried to absolutely screw us
Such a huge win, and now another must win at BC. Get that and we may be able to breathe a bit
a W, a W, a W
holy cow, I'm hyperventilating
I'm going to have a stroke...that was too intense. Great win!
Another game that should have been easy win but refs and dumb mistakes take a few extra months off my life. Huge to pull out the win there, but now i know why lots of people can't watch college basketball, the officiating is just so subpar and inconsistent that it's truly painful to watch.
Damn that was hard to watch. Announcers said the winner is likely dancing per Espn. Not feeling we are ready yet, But I'll take then win.
While i think we improved our chances greatly, I agree with you that I dont believe we are over the hump yet. Even with the poor officiating this should have been a double digit win. If they can win at BC and then win all the home games left except Duke, they should be fine.
The biggest news out of this game was how good our Managers team is. Already ranked top Five and they took down the Irish, considered the top manager team before yesterday
only 10 turnovers! this is good.
Thank goodness we won.
The "officiating" was...well...offensive. For me the fix was in when they called Clark for the charge (when the guy was clearly moving under him) on the play Fluger was hurt on the other end.
Robinson got chucked...no call. Over the back...no call. Shoulders...no call. But the guy falls down on a 3...automatic foul.
That said...Clark needs to take over games. He is a human highlight film and a complete match up nightmare.
Okay...one more: the officials weren't the only ones committing Larceny...
Notre Dame players were flopping left and right.
I swear we were trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If they had either Farrell or Colson we would have lost this game big. Too many mistakes in that second half. Need to play with a little more polish.
Exactly right. Kind of why I don't think we are a shoo in for the tournament yet. I think even if the Irish had had their freshman, DJ Harvey, because he is an excellent outside shooter, we likely would have lost that game. Farrell or Colson would have made it ugly.
I just mentioned this in another thread, Lunardi has the good guys as a first four out right now. J. Palm has the good guys as a 11 seed, play-in game against K-State.
Maybe, or maybe the refs would not have gotten board and felt the need to jump in make it close down the stretch if it was already close.
