Consider me jealous of all the clothing and accessories members of the football program get.

I knew they got that much stuff, but seeing it all piled on one table and strewn across the VT was still pretty staggering.
Boy, that all orange everything combo visible from above at the end was something else wasn't it?
I just puked.
Keshon Artis pointing out the all orange uniform at the end of the video
Looks too much like Clemson.
I mean, we'd all like our program to look like Clemson, as long as we don't look like Clemson.
Wish those uni's (the UNC game ones) were our new jersey design...so sweet.
That is a ton of #swag. Also, while I don't mind an orange alternate jersey/helmet/pants here and there, I don't think I'm too big a fan of the allorangeeverything look. Too much like Clemson.
Has anybody heard any hints on new uni designs for next season? Thought the orange jersey last year was a sneak peak, but seems like it was just a one-off. Heard some rumblings it might be a modern take on the Vick era unis, but nothing too concrete.
I would love nothing more than to have that all orange jersey style in maroon as our normal uniforms moving forward. Recruits love the simple, sleek look. No more shoulder stripes baybay.
I am not a recruit, but still support this message.
I noticed the recruits loved that orange uni.
Can we get the basketball team some shorts that they don't have to roll up?
I would agree.
Having gone to several games this year, it appears it must be an entire culture change reverting back to shorter shorts. Every team I've seen us play at home either had designed short shorts, or rolled their shorts up with the tag sticking out.
I.want.it.all
And kid versions that fit my 3 boys.
I wish someone would take my money and in return give me options to purchase quality Hokie swag made for tall people. I can never find sweats, shorts, etc tall/long enough.
This was pretty sweet, love the "25straight" comment he threw in there. Thanks for sharing.
The Nike gameday basketball shorts are ridiculously long. I bought a pair size L in the Buzzketball charity auction and they came in Length +2 and hang down about 3 inches below my knee. I am 6'4" and these things have to be made for someone who is 6'9" with a 34 inch waist. I won't wear them outside the house, they look like clown pants.
Imagine if we had Under Armour!
/ducks /s
they have to return most of the stuff however
Forgive my ignorance, but why do they have to return most of the stuff?
The NCAA has gotten a lot "looser" on that. Years ago, "practice gear" had to be returned because they didn't want it re-sold or construed as an extra benefit. Now, I am pretty certain the players get to keep most of the stuff. The certainly keep all of the shoes (not cleats), sweat suits, sweat shirts, non-compression shirts, bowl swag, etc.
Neat, but I still wish we were an Adidas school.
I'm pretty sure if you polled the fan base it would be like 90% Nike, 5% Under Armor, and 5% Adidas. I'd toss in a "Russell Athletic/Big Baller Brand" vote just for the chaos.
Gimme all orange everything next year. The kids love it and it drives a bunch of our fans nuts. The devious part of me begs for that to play out next year.
If ya can't beat em...
I'll put myself in timeout.
I think that mentality is dumb. Same with the "We look like school X because they have shoulder stripes too". Orange is one of our colors so I don't have a problem with wearing it.
Thanks Joe. Now I'm going to spend the rest of my day tracking down those orange travel kicks.
Edit: Was it just me that first read the title as: So Much FOR Nike Gear For Hokie Football and thinking we switched brands?
Did you find out what the shoes are?
Negative Ghostrider.
I found a few that were similar but nothing that was the same. That being said, not long after I started working I got rolled into a work avalanche and am still currently digging out.
Odds are they are a form of the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus. Looks like the 34 iteration when I googled. Nike's shoes provided to college athletics are usually the special branded color, which is almost never available to the public.
Source: I have at least 6 pairs from the athletic department in maroon or orange, and one pair in blue. Most teams alternated between maroon and orange shoes each school year.
Edit: Link added above.
Dumb question but did you just happen to know someone to get those shoes?
I was working in the athletic department when I was in school.
That's awesome. Jealous. Every time I see Whit at an event I want to tell him "You know it would be really nice if fans could buy some of these shoes."
A good pair of VT sneakers are what I'm really missing in terms of gameday attire.
NikeID used to have a maroon color in quite a few of the shoes...I just looked though I don't see it as an option anymore, glad I was able to make myself a pair.
Yeah. I must have missed it. I've looked over the past year but no luck with NikeID.
Yeah I would have got these in 2015 pretty sure they were my grad present to myself. I'll upload a picture of them if I remember to do so.
Not Nike obvs but I got these last fall:
What are they? I can see they're adidas but what are they specifically called?
Kanadia TR8. As a bonus they really are a good shoe in addition to being Hokie colored.
Did you design these or are they stock?
They were stock. With some searching you may be able to find a pair online somewhere still. I think the model might be a couple years old at this point so I'm not sure how hard you'll have to search. I THINK I got mine from Amazon but I remember seeing them on zappos and some other places too.
Amazon has those but only in little man foot size 6.5 or 7.5.
That's what mine look like, they came with those awful laces and just a solid maroon set. I'm not sure that team red is maroon, I looked to see what color i used but it won't show me that info in my order.
I'll probably go with orange to play it safe unless I can find the maroon in stores for reference.
I think The "Team Red" = Alabama Crimson "Varsity Red" = aOSU red. To my knowledge you can no longer pick the Hokie Maroon.
Those are awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I also have a pair of these but a little more white I believe. A couple of VTs teams had these one year.
I found these with maroon and orange as primary colors. It's called team red but looks maroon in the images. I'll probably go this route.
Nike Roshe One
Umm is this one of those what color is the dress? Because that looks red as shit to me.
Did you go to Edit Design? The primary thumbnail is red and grey, right? These are part of Nike Id so you can customize them.
Yeah, you can actually customize those w/ orange & maroon. Just made these really quick as an example

If anyone has any gear with this "team red" color would really appreciate a picture. I have a bad feeling they will come out more red than maroon in real life.
yeah, that was the only thing I couldn't say 100% is maroon vs. red. That being said, you could always go with black/orange
undefined&fmt=png-alpha&posN=0,-0.1&icc=AdobeRGB)
I didn't think of that combo. Was just thinking of going with orange.
Edit: Hope this embed works (second time finally)
I bought these a couple years ago. Laces were a little on the pink side, so I replaced them with second hand orange ones...
Joe, great job with this. I would love to have all that swag. Many Hokie legs to you!
The layout on the VT is a nice touch...and very nicely edited, I think we have an upper-tier level 'production' team? Whatever you would call them, but they produce a lot of things like this that are really elite compared with other ACC programs...
About 1/4th of what Oregon, Michigan, UNC, Clemson and Bama get. We do compare favorably to Purdue and Air Force, though.
If they are really getting 4x the amount of gear in that video, that is just overkill to be honest, diminishing marginal utility at an exponential rate.
In the case of Michigan and Oregon, is probably more like 6 times the gear. not TIC
That's just wasteful.
Agree, but so are different game jersey's for every game, and 6 helmets a year, etc, etc, etc
And what exactly are you basing that number off of?
The fact that our Nike deal is the 3rd lowest of a P5 school, and Michigans is worth 174 million dollars. UNCs is worth triple our current deal BEFORE they sign this latest new deal, rumored to be near 100 mil. Our Nike deal is absurd for an ACC school- its embarrassing, really.
Clemson gets less than 1m more than we do and Alabama gets bout 2m more. These numbers suggest that the final number isn't everything. Clearly there is a reason so many teams take smaller deals with Nike.
That chart does not tell the whole story. Oregons "deal" is worth much more than is indicated on that chart. USC W too.
Oregon given the enormous Phil Knight connection should never, ever be used as an example for comparison in apparel endorsement deals.
Maybe if you whine about it in more threads it will change sooner.
Maybe we will continue to get screwed by Nike if you complain about me posting about it.
So you believe that because those schools receive higher income from their apparel contracts... that the student athletes receive a proportional increase in the amount gear?
Yes. I know that for a fact.
Well let me provide hard evidence to contradict your fact. Here is a Link from our "friends" at TSL.
You'll see our deal includes an annual $275k in cash and $1.8MM in apparel credits. I highly doubt that a UNC/Michigan/Whoever is opting to receive that significant increase in compensation in apparel credits... why would they want 6x more clothes for the athletes instead of cash?
Ummm- Michigan's Nike deal is worth 174 million dollars. Nike made 6 styles of brand jordan shoes for their players to choose from at the launch party when the deal was announced. VTs deal isn't worth the tax Michigan pays on theirs, and our players have never gotten a custom shoe made just for them. To think that Nike doesn't throw more gear at Michigan is nonsense. Having a friend in the business gives me a bit more insight as well. Trust me- VT had a "decent" deal in the mid 2000's and pro combat days. Those days are long over, and our deal is a joke now. We get Duke's hoops designs and fabrics about 5 years after they debut them, just to give you an idea on that side as well.
I really miss the pro combat days. The anticipation of those every year were incredible.
So, are we "phasing out" the maroon to go with a predominantly, Clemson+LOLUVA+Syracuse orange look!?!? If so, absolutely NOT cool or supportive of it. Despicable. And I thing the whole "recruits love it" is way overplayed AND overestimated.
Also, how did we (Tech) make out in the deal restructure??
Yes we are. Whit hinted as much in his interview with Will Stewart 1.5 years ago? at any rate, Nike prefers more orange in the design and integrated more when they "refreshed" the brand which was just changing the font, really. But hey, they did that for "free" as part of our deal with them. Look for the new uni's next year to be the orange ones we wore last year against UNC in a maroon and white version. It will NOT be flashy nor a total overhaul, but the shoulder stripes do go away.
Please show me where Whit said we're going with orange as our primary color, because it isn't in that interview.
Moreover, last year's orange uniforms were a one-off if we're to believe Clark Ruhland.
Came here to say this. We are not going to switch our primary color to Orange. That said, I would love to use the orange jersey style moving forward but in maroon.
Show me where I said "predominately" ? Or are you here to argue with me as usual? Whit indicated "more orange"- you can run with that or play gotcha all day. I dont care. Enjoy.
MacGruber asked:
To which you responded
How else am I supposed to interpret this?
Whit hinted more orange. I should have been more clear.
Next year as in the 2018 season, or 2019?
The football team will have new uniforms, minus the shoulder stripes for the 2018 season. What will they look like? Nobody knows- but VT Fencer knows that they won't be the designs or similar from the UNC game last year and they won't be "predominately" orange .
They're not going to look like the 2000 era uniforms, and as such, the knee jerk reaction will be that they suck.
In fact, if they even have a hint of orange in them, there will be a mini meltdown. Its science.
There will definitely be a meltdown regardless. It is impossible to please everybody when it comes to uniforms. It may be more divisive than politics.
It's true some will always find fault with it. But I will be satisfied withs simpler and no shoulder stripes. Early 2000's and 2004-2007 are my favorites. The AME in the 2004-2007 was unreal cool. Scroll down to the VT-FSU game, not only is a great game to watch the highlights from, but the AME is on point.
The funny thing is, I remember a huge meltdown on TSL when the 2004-2007 era uniforms were unveiled. People absolutely despised them.
Likewise, coming off the 2008-2009 set, people absolutely loved the current set when they made their appearance in 2008. We went so far as to wear them in the ACC CG and Orange Bowl in lieu of our regular set because of their popularity.
People will meltdown because they care- which is a good thing. Yes, no matter what Nike gives us (or Nike's mid Atlantic one off design cohort) people will complain. What we do know is that the "throwback" shoulder stripe look is gone and Whit "prefers" only the traditional VT logo on the helmets.
I still rock my '04 style jersey... sexy as all get out.
I didn't claim anything that isn't backed up by what Clark said. I just called you on claiming to know what the 2018 uniforms will look like because of an interview that doesn't say anything about what the 2018 uniforms will look like.
Yeah, the only people who know what they are going to be aren't talking
You want to know what they'll look like? Based on how we've done this in the past, just wait til Devyn Ford makes his OV, and we'll see our next great RB unveiling them on social media.
Whit said no shoulder stripes and not flashy. Last year VT comes out with an orange jersey with no shoulder stripes and not flashy. I post to "look for" these type in maroon and white. I did not say exact and I did not claim to have seen the new ones. Logic however would say that the orange UNC jersey- that has already been designed and used is "perhaps" the template. We shall see
The only thing those who know what they look like are saying.... They're not maroon versions of that orange set this past year. That was a one time uniform and uniform style. The new ones will be completely different.
Interesting. I would like to see a shoulder strip-less jersey that looks nothing like the orange ones from last year. That would tell me they have stripes or something significant elsewhere. Interesting.
Yeah you "called" me on something I did not claim. I said "look for" the new ones to be like the orange UNC ones.- ya know, no shoulder stripes and not flashy, which IS what Whit "hinted" at in the past.
Sounds an awful lot like an assertion of fact to me. "I think" would be how I would lead off a statement like this. Go ahead and lay into me for language policing now.
You can't play the repeater game by yourself
Might be in the minority, but I thought the one-off orange unis for UNC were incredibly boring. No flash at all. Really hoping that is not the template for the new ones.
Also wonder if that will mean a new helmet too.
It was an orange shirt. Not the worst thing we've worn but we've got a unique color scheme and I want both colors on everything we wear.
My favorite VT jersey is the single orange sleeve, followed by the 2008 pits.
Pretty slick video outtro. Neat gear too
