First....things first, let's finish strong and I need Dax to pony up finally and go ahead and pick the good guys. Not sure if I can wait all the wait till Monday, even though I know I'll have to. Also need Devyn to show us some love today, by at least keeping us in his top 3. Granted, I'll also take a commitment. Very hopeful AND thankful we got Cam on board. Just glad to see guys reppin' our school. It's starting to feel like these recruits are become more and more proud to wear the VT on their helmets. Keep the hype train rolling.
You're getting your hopes up and I recommend against that in any recruiting scenario. Maintain jaded and be happily surprised > being optimistic and having your soul crushed.
Lol you can always tell other people who have been following VT recruiting for a good while.
247 just posted an article about 2020 WR KeAndre Lambert, who just happens to be Kam Chancellors nephew. It's very far out but I had to post because his second highlight is a goaline block where he pancakes the corner 5 yards into the endzone. In terms of recruiting, hes garnering some interest it looks like and plans to visit Clemson and Tech soon.
Dax is visiting.
We have an in home with JJB
Grant is 50/50 on us vs UT jr
Becton is a Hokie
Is there any solid evidence that Grant is still a tossup? I haven't heard anything about him recently besides the fact it seemed his UT visit went well.
He is a quiet guy. UT has picked up the heat on him though
247 insiders say they feel better but still a toss up between VT and UT
Who would ever choose Utah Tech over us? I still don't know why they changed their name from UTI.
via GIPHY
Look at how young he was.
What happened to Rich 50 is poor mans 35?
That was when he was still hungry. The casting on that movie was outstanding.
But seriously, he clearly has some good genes.
Zooming in on the latest photo on Coach Fuente:
He's got brass balls.
Next Wednesday Dax will commit. He will have 5 hats on the table - Clemson, Bama, UNC, Stanford, and VT.
and he'll pull a FSU hat from under the table
Or the hats are just a ploy and he is wearing an FSU shirt underneath his other shirt.
He will eliminate teams by throwing their hat into a bonfire
After burning the last hat a lambo drives up and the driver gets out with an FSU flag
And then another LB in the same class outplays Him and he transfers in two season?
And hands him the keys?
I hope there's a Clemson flag there too.
I just hope that super fan guy isn't there...
As someone said above:
Need to know if superfan has ever gone to a commit event where they committed somewhere besides Tech and if so how he reacted.
Is Superfan a TKP'er? If so, he needs to identify himself.
I believe he goes by french60wasp. Usually on here speaking about things no one understands and making everyone feel bad for eating cheese for some reason.
And calling Major Payne a mediocre movie...I mean, for real, I think everybody can agree that Major Payne is a terrific movie, with an above average plot and some outstanding acting. /s
1) Not me
2) I defined mediocre as critically regarded as average and not a financial blockbuster.
And then promptly begin to learn to act like a grown man

I'm pretty confident he was at KJ Henry's a couple weeks back
how have I never seen this gif before on here
Saved it for a glorious moment

Devyn Ford's Top 6
Devyn breaks it down
HIGHLIGHTS
Clemson- recruiting him at DB. Fun program. "They're still in the top six" (emphasis mine)
UNC- good relationship with coaches. NFL alumni. "Explosive" team.
Ohio State- Environment. "I fell in love with it when I went to see one of the games"
Oklahoma- good history at RB
Penn State- potential of program. Teammate Nana Asiedu is committed there for 2018. Likes competing with Ricky Slade.
aaaaaaaaand
WTF?!!!
Explosives don't work when wet.
Not necessarily true.
Pfffffft. How would YOU know, "RocketHokie13"???

Some have their own oxidizer
Obviously he has not actually considered them enough to know anything about them, and was just making stuff up to be nice because they tried hard for a basketball school.
Top Right, Virginia Tech is not only the top choice but the right choice. He essentially committed! Mark it down
And then people wonder why their dreams are crushed.
I thought it was just being a D.C./Hokie fan, but that's new level.
Here is an article with a quick Q&A on each school. Interesting that Clemson is recruiting him as a corner. Not a whole lot of info but I'm sure we will all over analyze his responses and end up arguing about the validity of star ratings by the end of the day! lol only half serious.
EDIT: Wartooth beat me to it.
Biggest Takeaway from the article. Please commit in June and then bring all your Blue-Chip friends to Tech with you. Thanks.
It appears that Larry Fedora is helicoptering in to visit Dax.
RotoworldLink
[Fuente arrives in the WBTV Storm Chaser van]
dont hate on storm chasers
Do hate on stormchasers in fedoras, though.
I know exactly where Fedora should shove that helicopter. Blades and all.
Fedora is helicoptering in, but Dax is coming to us. For most of the past year everyone has been saying his recruitment is gonna come down to who gets the last visit, and it looks like that's going to be the Hokies. Hopefully bodes well for us
Maybe Fedora will give him a lift Home!
Think of it this way... Dax is heading up to VT later that night, if they didn't use the helicopter they wouldn't have been able to get over to Shelby in time to meet with him.
Lets just have Bud roll on in with a tank from the museum in Danville.
We do defense the right way.
Fedora being desperate . Get that crap outa here !!!!
He did the same thing back in November. It makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Tell me he doesn't buy into their fake nonsense. They are truly all flash
Fedora just seems like a giant Douche. Hopefully, Dax can see that. Fedora is on the hot seat as well.
Are you still hearing positive things for VT on Dax?
Like losing 59-7 desperate.
and it just started raining
Don't know why you hatin'. If there had been no hurricane, the Tar Heels beat VT and go on to win National Championship. Hilary becomes president, Tre Turner and the other NC recruits commit to UNC and I FINALLY get my offer letter from VT after only waiting 45 years!
So, just be thankful that hurricane changed history!
45 years...hurricanes...screen name checks out.
Do we also get our BCA refunds, too?
Riiiight.
Like you guys don't want a Hokiecopter.
I don't, but then I get scared in tall buildings.
I sure as hell do. The difference is Fedora is a massive lying tool and this amplifies the perception of him being full of shit
one of these painted up like Hokiebird

I've always thought you only buy a helicopter when you literally have nothing else to spend money on. Like as a school why buy a helicopter? Doesn't have the range of a jet, doesn't carry as many people as a jet, small aircraft can travel quicker, if you're going to the grocery store you're not taking a chopper, you can only land certain places.
my point is, while I'd love to have one, its like the most unnecessary thing in the history of forever for an athletic department to have
I agree with the guy above let bud break out the tank way better for a statement
Feel like I've seen this discussed but it was a while back. Any chance that it can only be jbb OR dax at this point?
no
Por quΓ© no los dos
Anyone who can't make the numbers work to take both should be fired immediately.
I know it's way too early, but does anyone have any insider knowledge on Chris Tyree? It's exciting to see the #4 overall recruit so far from Va, especially at RB but nervous that he's already taken two unofficials to Penn State. It's a bummer to see them come in and raid the state.
PSU added David Corley as their 10th coach - a guy who played at W&M, and coached at UConn and most recently, Army. He's regarded as a good recruiter and has deep ties in VA - so it will likely continue to get worse before it gets better.
This is the type of hire we should have made with our 10th coaching position. The arguments that we couldn't afford someone better, or shouldn't expect someone with experience are complete bogus.
#VAtoPA :(
Actually that's misleading as hell. PSU had to hire four coaches for this upcoming season. They promoted from within GASP for for one of them. Yes if Tech was replacing a position coach like PSU had to do I agree hiring outside makes sense BUT they did the same thing Tech did. Promoted someone who already worked for Franklin.
You'll seriously say anything to try to legitimize the doofy hire we made.
Who are you referring to as 'promoted from within?'
Pill Galiano? A guy who has coached for 17 years at Villanova, Rutgurs and then in the NFL?
Tyler Bowen? A guy who was the OL coach and then OC at Fordham?
Any article on 'PSU's 10th coach' leads you Corley - who's resume highlights are documented.
It doesn't matter if they hired 4 coaches, or who you're officially calling the '10th coach.' ALL of them are extensively more experienced than who we hired, and any would be considered a much better hire.
Additionally, the 'position coach' argument doesn't hold much water, bc PSU already has (had) an Offensive Recruiting Coordinator, along with a Defensive Recruiting Coordinator among their position coaches. Until our recent hire, Fuente didn't have an official recruiting coordinator on the coaching staff.
Again with misleading Phil was an intern in the NFL. Come on. PSU hired 4 guys 3 of whom toon over position coaching duties the guy you want to cite as the key VA recruiter is taking over a departed position coaching position.
The irony is insane here.
He was an assistant ST coach for Tampa Bay for multiple seasons. That's not 'an intern'
Not that any of this matters. As much as you're failing in your attempts to shit on the point, PSUs hires across the board were better than what we made. No matter how you keep trying to spin it.
Outoftowner. It's probably safe to say that no one in the fan base was blown away by our 10th hire. However, Fuente is a professional. Whit is a professional. We are all message board posters. Let's all let the professional work.
I personally am happy with the overall trajectory of the program, and am willing to give it a few years to see if this arc continues. Regardless of our 10th coach, I'm pretty damn happy with the current 9.
Also, I've read your posts, and I am far from convinced that hiring a GA from a SEC program would make the difference you are describing. Perhaps you should devote some of this passion into joining the Hokie Club and encouraging all your friends to do the same. I know your argument, blah blah blah "we could have afforded the salary". This is too micro of a view, as the overall gap in athletics revenue between VT and the blue bloods is truly staggering. Do you honestly believe that one individual can overcome double digit millions of dollar differences in money / resources? FSU's athletic apartments are probably nicer than most of our homes.
Quick! Someone start this conversation in another thread so we can have it S I X times instead of just five!
I hate it when the recruiting thread goes OT
You might as well just say, "I hate recruiting threads".
And I especially hate it when people post irrelevant gifs in the recruiting thread
Here's a relevant gif, then...
Have been a HC member for multiple years. And as pointed out by posters in another thread, it's perfectly okay to question how a decision was made here or there. We don't have to blindly praise all decisions made by our coaching staff and administration - and I am a big fan of Fuente, even bigger one of Whit.
My posts about a GA were mostly rhetorical responses to the 'we couldn't do any better,' and 'we don't have the money to pay an actual coach,' camps, which is quite disappointing to see amongst our fans. Even more so when those posting that have little to no insight into the situation themselves.
Not looking outside of the program to make a hire and hiring someone with no experience recruiting or coaching isn't going to put us in a better position to win a championship, especially given what our competition is doing, no matter how Fireman or anyone else wants to spin it.
If you, or other posters are okay with 8-9 wins a year and mid 20s-30s ranked recruiting classes, that's fine. My ambitions and expectations are higher right now.
I apologize to everyone else for muddying up this thread, the 'aww shucks we don't have as much money as duke and therefore shouldn't be expected to make a better football hire' crap pisses me off to no end.
I guess my problem is assuming Lechtenberg is a bad hire with little to no insight. He could be the next Nick Saban as far as any of us know. I do agree though that we should not just make excuses and settle. I only caution on how the assumption is made as to whether we did or didn't settle. I do not think a splashy name was needed just for the sake of change or prestige...not for the tenth coach.
Not with that haircut.
I think I hate the hire mainly because of the hair.
LET'S GO ... TO SUPERCUTS
Supercuts may be the problem.
Don't fret, that ACC Network money is coming soon.
We don't have the $$$ for the type of 10th coach we want
I don't think that is the case. If that was what Fuente wanted, he would have gotten it.
He turned a guy that he completely trusts as a talent evaluator into a "coach" who can go on the road and recruit while the other coaches prepare the team to win football games. Clearly, they do not think we need an additional D line coach (or something like that) to help us get better.
I think it is a really smart move and it completely makes sense for us when you think about it.
His highlights are fun to watch. I think I've changed my mind on the whole running back by committee thing. I'd be 100% okay watching Grant, Ford, and Tyree burning through a game.
Me when yet another recruiting thread absolutely derails...
Me every time someone comments with their own off topic comment about how off topic the comments have gotten.
Devyn Ford, Savion Jackson and others are gonna be in town this weekend.
Hokies at the basketball game better get lit
Not sure who caught the Press Pass Podcast released today but Andy had Evan Watkins on to talk about recruiting and here is the synopsis:
Dax - Feels a lot like Devon Hunters recruitment. Loves the ride but felt like a hokie since day one. Optimistic about it.
JJB: Two weeks ago would've said Nebraska but our in home went as well as it could've. Distance of Nebraska could play a factor and were in it more than it seems like now.
Grant: Too tough to tell but feels like it's between UT and Tech. Most likely sticking with UT though.
Jamarcus: Outspoken about how much he loves Miami. Source tells him it's between us and Miami but it's hard to imagine Miami not getting him.
Rasheed: Apparently not out of it but would have to hope PSU and OSU fill spots before Rasheed and he jumps ship.
Elijah Davis: Could be an 11th hour grab considering how our offer stacks up to the rest of his list.
Back on the hype train to end this class.
So DAX is coming tomorrow afternoon to campus...
Do the crystal balls start flying towards VT or is he coming to tell Fu and Bud sorry face to face?
I've got no sauces but with Wiltfong recently changing his CB to the good guys and Watkins not changing his from VT, it's a pretty good sign.
Is he gonna go to the Miami game? Hope the students can show him a snapshot of our 12th man
He will miss the game but some big 2019:targets will be in attendance. Dax will be in Blacksburg during the evening.
Reason he won't be at the game is that is his in home with Fedora.
Believe Devyn Ford is one of the 2019 recruits that will be there.
Savion Jackson high 4* DE from NC will be there as well.
Man Savion is a "dude" and probably a close 2nd behind Ford in terms of recruiting needs. He could replace Hill and Mihota and play from Day 1. This also seems like his 5th trip up to blacksburg, which makes me optimistic despite us battling the blue bloods like Bama for him.
If he doesn't have a good feel of how awesome our 12th man is by now then he never will, lol. He's been to Blacksburg just about as many times as ANY recruit we've ever had.
Was wondering the same thing as soon as i saw that he was visiting the last weekend before sogning day. But if we all believe together....
Buzz hosting four 2019 prospects today. Toney looks like a lower rated, Buzz OKG- was a PG who sprouted to 6-6 and has a sweet lefty stroke. Could be a steal as a legit point forward.

Just got a preferred walk-on Jaewan "Tink" Boyd. Just watched his HUDL film and he makes some pretty impressive catches. It will be interesting to see if he can earn a scholarship at some point.
On another note, anyone know who is visiting other than Devyn and Savion?
Edit: Saw that 4 * ATH JR Walker is there too.
Not sure on the level of competition, but the catches he makes on that tape are very impressive. Looks like he has great natural instincts and talent as a receiver.
Couldn't see who the kids were, but Fuente, Foster, and Cornelson had 7-8 recruits at the Bball game this afternoon. They sat in front corner in front of the student section. Saw several bball players go over there after the game as well.
Is there a way to delete comments?
Goes to the same school and played basketball with 5* PF Armando Bacot and 2020 4* SF Henry Coleman. So this could be a little help to basketball recruiting
Trinity's about 5 minutes from my house so I can see them play and this dude has HANDS... very underrated imo
https://247sports.com/college/virginia-tech/Bolt/Virginia-Tech-Hokies-Fo...
Looks like we got a preferred walk-on
According to the guys over at 247, the student section had a Devyn Ford fathead & were yelling at him and chanting "WE WANT DEVYN" at one point. Haven't seen any pics or video on social media but I'm sure that was a cool experience for him
EDIT: Just realized this was info posted in a VIP/premium thread, but it's also something that could've been posted by anyone who was at the game and saw it so oh well
Your good was also posted verbally on Twitter.
This reminds me of the beginning of Magnolia where the kid goes up to the roof to jump off because his parents won't stop fighting; the mom shoots at the husband and hits the kid instead as he falls past the window. Even though the kid would have died in the fall, the mom is charged with murder. Except in your case, you'll (hopefully) be exonerated by the coincidence.
See? Same exact thing.
Yeah they also had a Devyn Ford fathead in the student section that was shown on the big screen. Thats next level recruiting right there haha.
Great day so far....if you know what I mean.
Given how the hoops game went, I'm actually not sure I do know what you mean.
I'll need you to say explicitly what you mean.
My interpretation of LA's post:
Dax told Devin that he + JBB were going to "break him," Rocky style, if he went somewhere else.
Devyn committed right on the spot.
Grant texted Ford and said, 'don't worry, I got your back.'
Lastly, Rick Sandidge showed up outta nowhere b/c of the whole 'breaking somebody' talk and took a ride in Bud's tank. So now he's a Hokie too, and French is going to eat cheese.
I see no other possible scenario than this having played out today.
That's sound logic, right there.
You had me until the French and cheese part.
I would eat a slice of American if it meant Rick Sandidge signing with VT. There is a better chance of me giving birth to a flaming porcupine though.
How do we know that isn't actually the reason he isn't signing here?? Although as a fellow cheese hater, I wouldn't want you to go through that honestly, under any circumstances.
How Goode are we talking?
I'm hoping it's a Tsunami.
Are people still worried about Cam?
Not at all. Just Dax
I sure hope not. That would be a waste of life force. He is beyond 100% VT:
I don't know why anyone would be, he is already signed.
Lol no I know he's already committed just saw an opportunity for a pun but in hindsight probably would've been better to make a joke about a 2019 recruit
1) Great day = Got one of the recruits we've been chasing.
2) So far = Still not done, more coming (today, of course).
3).... = Four dots. Wow. Just, wow.
4) If you know what I mean = Oh, we know.
I don't know what you mean. I think we need more information
The next Vanilla Vick is here to impress in the Spring games!
another PWO. Nice!
I guess now we get to see how Hunter Green goes with Burnt Orange and Chi - Chicag - -

Edit: delete.
Not going to say I'm an insider like BAG or LA, but I do have a friend that works in the athletics department and he said the visits this weekend went really, really well. Could tell the guys that were here were having a blast and enjoyed the basketball game. Fans got really into it.
It was a great day. 2019 could be special....
IDK I'm getting tired of hearing that. Every year there's some event where all the insiders start saying "[Class a year from now] could be special."
I wouldn't say we have a problem with recruiting right now at all, Fuente is reeling in good classes. But they're not "special" or above what we should really expect given where our program sits in the CFB hierarchy either. Call me when the 5 stars actually decide they want to do more for us than compliment our coaches after apologizing for committing elsewhere.
There are 25 5 stars a year, how many do you think we should sign?
1 would be a good start
We get one of those guys every 3-4 years right now, and half the time it's just because of an already-established family connection.
Get that closer to 1 a year and we can start talking about the recruiting being "special."
Well I guess that still leaves 24 for Bama.
Georgia now
I agree with your overall point, but you're being way to generous with "every 3-4 years".
Consensus 5 Stars in VT History:
Kevin Jones - 2000
Macho Harris - 2005
That's it.
Settle was a 5* on ESPN, and Kendall was a 5* on 247.
If we want to compete for national championships, over half of every signing class needs to be a 4* or better every year. That's when we can start talking about special recruiting.
EDIT: Can't believe I didn't realize Tyrod and Marcus were 5-stars. Thanks for the corrections.
*cough* Tyrod Taylor *cough*
Composite rating currently shows that we have had four 5* recruits:
2000- Kevin Jones
2002- Marcus Vick
2007- Tyrod Taylor
2013- Kendall Fuller
A glitch once showed DJ Coles as a composite 5* recruit but was "repaired" last year; he is now listed as a 4* by composite.
Source
Kendall, Macho, and Tyrod right? So that's 3 since 2005? Wow, I guess you are right. And none since...2013? So I guess we are due...
Try every 5 yrs.
I think we should probably go ahead and sign all of them.
As much as I want to hit you with the debbie downer pic this is pretty true. However I think usually we are talking about the class "potential" at this point in the year primarily because none of the good players have committed yet and are still available. One difference this year is that it does seem that some of these guys are genuinely higher on us than the blue chippers typically are this time of the year. Maybe that's just my "early in the recruiting season irrational optimism" though.
All in all it's pretty impossible to come to any concrete conclusions this early in the year. A year ago today we were talking about our potential because of guys like Ricky Slade and Teradja Mitchell and then by the Fall they were no more than an afterthought. With a few guys planning to commit early this year we at least have the "potential" to get some early momentum that we've never had.
https://media.giphy.com/media/3o7P4F86TAI9Kz7XYk/giphy.gif
I 100% agree with you. But that's not to mean today wasn't a good day.
But yes, recruiting needs to improve a good amount for us to have a chance at a national championship, which is what we all hopefully strive for.
Ugh it's like reading the 247 board all over again
FYI no one go there now it's that toxic time of year again
In the year 2077 message board insiders with sources will be telling people that Frank Beamer's Clone has VT on the cusp of a special recruiting class no really this time we mean it.
I mean if you think ten 4 βοΈ Recruits isn't improvment for Tech then I don't think your ever going to be happy.
The question is, improvement with relation to when? We certainly made a massive improvement jumping up to the 26th class according to 247 composite with the 2017 class from 42nd in 2016. However the beamer situation clearly affected that. But remember we also had two 21st ranked classes in 2012 and 2013 (with six 4*s in '12). I'm really glad we jumped back to 26th last year but think thats more of an average or slightly above average class for tech with 42nd being an outlier the other direction.
Many on this site seem to think Fuente has taken us to never before reached heights in recruiting, but thats not the case....YET. If we can finish strong I think this will be one of our best classes, but dont think we quite have the legs to set records this year. Heres to hoping that "next year" really is the year.
Leg. The stars are overanalyzed anyway. Yes they mean something, no they aren't the be all and end all. Fun to talk about when there's no football though.
VT's ranking, per 247 Composite:
2012: 21
2013: 21
2014: 28
2015: 29
2016: 42
2017: 26
2018: 22
If other recruiting services show a different picture please post it- I don't have any attachment to any of the services. With the exception of Beamer's last year that's pretty consistent. That's not a bad recruiting record, but it's not great and it's not really "improving". It's where VT is in the pecking order. That's not even looking at what happens once these players get on campus.
And Fuente's first job is to move recruiting back to where it was, or did you think he was coming in and suddenly we were going to have top 15 classes? Now that he has a top 25 class the next step is top 20 and then maybe with the right resources in place top 15.
I don't think that anyone was expecting that fireman, but at the same time (if you'll see my above post) you and many others often express the splendor of fuentes recruiting thus far, and thus far it hasn't exceeded beamers. Doesnt mean its bad, just average. Some of us are happier with average than others. IF we can hang at 22 ill be quite pleased with this class for the record. But you probably dont remember that we had a very similar conversation when we were "15th" earlier this recruiting cycle.
Yes I'm expressing happiness with this class because it's a huge improvement over the last 4/5 classes. I'm also realistic enough to look at the team and Tech in general and see a top 10 class probably isn't going to happen soon if at all. So top 15 is my long term goal and a class siting at 22 is really close to that long term goal.
Im happy you're happy, really. Again, I will be too if we FINISH 22nd. But you also seem to throw shade at those who aren't as excited about an average class pretty frequently. Also, the difference between 22nd and 15th is larger than I think you realize.
I remain naively optimistic that if we can back to where we were previously in recruiting for 4-5 years in a row, when we competed for the ACC championship every year based on a good defensive system and a few great players on offense and defense, that having a real offensive system will make just enough of a difference that we will steal a few big games we seemed to fall short in last time we recruited at that level. I believe that is what will take to realistically expect us to move up into the next echelon of recruiting. I am excited because I think adding 7+ 4* to different positions is what does that. A better class is the goal, but expecting it to show up based only on fast talk instead of building the foundation is a good way to get frustrated.
The difference between now and the 2000s/early 2010s is that the ACC as a whole is lightyears better. Duke is now dangerous enough and well-coached enough to upset a good team any given Saturday. When we were steamrolling through the ACC, a lot of that was big fish in a small pond. I am glad we have been able to stabilize and maintain our historic levels of recruiting under the new staff, but to truly separate from the pack in today's ACC, I think we will need to keep building and striving for better classes.
This is just not true. The top is better now, and 2016 was a great year, but the ACC all the way through is not significantly better. Still too many basketball schools who don't primarily care about football and the recruiting is too poor for them to be consistently good. Wake Forest just finished a run with John Wolford that was similar but not as as good as Riley Skinner's run during our reign. UNC is down again but their previous resurgence isn't much different from when they cheated to create a strong team in the 2008-2010 run before they got in trouble. The main difference between the ACC then and now is that the top teams (Clemson, FSU a few years ago) are better than the top when we were there, the rest of the ACC is just as inconsistent and mediocre than ever. If we and Miami continue on the current trajectory and UNC and FSU bounce back, then yes, the ACC will be consistently better than it was back then but right now 2016 was an aberration held up by tremendous QB play in the ACC, the rest of the conference as of now remains too inconsistent, and the commitment to football league-wide is still not there.
Definitely agree with some of these points. But I still think there is overall better football in the conference than 10 years ago and the bottom isn't quite as bad. Not saying the whole league is full of worldbeaters, but people aren't blowing Duke out 50-0 weekly as they used to. I also think Louisville was a significant upgrade over Maryland for football, Pitt was another solid football addition to the Atlantic, and NC State is going to be a team to watch moving forward with the way they are recruiting. I think when you look at the ACC schedule now, there are potentially more pitfalls than you may have seen in our heyday. But I do agree that the top is where the biggest difference has been made with Clemson finally getting over the hump and FSU getting back to an elite level a few years ago.
I agree Louisville is an overall upgrade from Maryland, and Duke is no longer a punching bag, I am interested to see if Louisville can maintain the level they've been at without a transcendent, heisman winning QB. That said, I do think the ACC is on the cusp of having a deeper top of the league than ever before, but a lot of that rests on how well UNC and FSU can bounce back, and if NC State continues their upward momentum and if we continue to get better as well.
NC State will be interesting. They managed a decent year to save Doeren's job (Tenn's overtures helped things too) and he put together a very good class this year. However they were loaded with upperclassmen last season and it's not hard to imagine them dropping off significantly in the next two years. They lose an OL, their leading rusher (Hines), best offensive weapon (Samuels) and a staggering 9 of 11 starters on defense. Next year they will lose 4 starting OL and their QB. Perhaps this recruiting class will mature quickly enough to backfill those open spots but I'd say the book is still out on Doeren's coaching and I could see a steep drop soon. The hypothetical next coach would have players to work with though.
If I was him I'm taking the next decent Big or SEC job that offers.
Did they, though?
If we continue to recruit at a top 20 level year after year, and Fuente's offensive system can be an improvement over or previous system, we are one elite playmaker on Offence away from being top 10 team. I am not sure if the Beamer teams at that point did not get over the hump because of their recruiting philosphy or failure to win the really big games, but suspect a little of both. I am hopeful we can get back to that point, and then up the recruiting to match the on the field performance so we can stay there.
Have we ever recruited at a top20 level? I think we have only 1 or 2 recruiting classes in the top20 ever. And the average difference between a 25th and 15th ranked class is huge, which is why we have never achieved that.
One metric I look at in the recruiting rankings is the average recruit ranking for each school. Historically, VT's classes average at about the ranking of a high 3* recruit. To get in top 15 range, you're talking about averaging around a low to mid 4* recruit average. I don't think it's unrealistic that we get there, but we are currently performing about where we have historically.
One thing VT has done so well over the years is taking that somewhat overlooked borderline 3/4* recruit and developing them into great college players. With recruiting classes that average in that range, you typically have a 50/50 shot at getting a really good or solid college player or someone who just doesn't pan out. You typically also have prospects with less than optimal measurables, which means NFL odds are really hit or miss. When you start averaging a low to mid 4* ranking, your odds of having classes with more and better contributors increase significantly, and you're likely going to have more consistent NFL prospects. This helps the program sell itself in a lot of ways.
I know one of our biggest pitches is the Xs and Os aptitude of this staff and the "coach 'em up" angle, which is a great attribute. But all top tier programs are going to have some of the better coaches in the country. I think this is where the recruiting/sales pitch angle comes into play for most of the top recruits to start separating schools. I think this is something our program will need to continue to develop - a cohesive brand and better way to market our program and facilities to recruits.
"I don't think it's unrealistic that we get there, but we are currently performing about where we have historically."
Exactly. And that's a good thing! Historically you can recruit at VT's level and be a good/really good team. You can win 8-10 games a year with that talent level. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that for VT. I'm happy that they're recruiting well enough to maintain their level of success. (UVA is an example of a team that's in real trouble based on recruiting falling off unless they land some great transfers/develop 2-star kids incredibly well). No one has a problem with what they're doing now. The issue I have is that we keep hearing how great things are just around the corner, and that corner keeps moving further down the road.
2015-16: "Fuente will finish the recruiting season strong!"
Feb. 2016: "Well, they didn't finish strong, but they're on the verge of something special for 2017!"
Fall 2016: "This is a good class, and they're going to close with a bang!"
Feb. 2017: "Okay, they didn't close with a bang, but the foundation for a special 2018 class is there!"
December 2017: "They're going to close this class with major fireworks!"
Feb. 2018: "They won't close as well as expected but 2019 could be special!"
Maybe it will happen. I hope it happens. I'd rather see it happen before getting excited that this is the year where it all comes together.
Ya youre right but I just look at what the "goal" classes have. For ex. 15th ranked FSU has 11 4*...thats why the difference between 22 and 15 is larger than many realize. Its not just one or two good players unfortunately.
Did Miami or Georgia or LSU or FSU or TA&M or UT see dips in recruiting just to return to the pecking order? I'm asking sincerely
UGA had the #6 class in 2016, when Richt was fired. 3rd last year, 2nd, now. Had consistently been top 10/close to it under Richt. LSU finished 7th in 2017. They were 2nd in 2016 and are 13th now, after a run of top 10 finishes.
Miami was 10th in 2012. They went down to 27th in 2015, then 22nd in 2016 (Golden's last class/Richt's first), 12th in 2017 and 5th this year. FSU was 12th in 2008 and 11th in 2009 when Bowden was on his last legs and have been in or around the top 10 since.
A&M- Had the 34th class in 2011 and 16th class in 2012 (Sherman's last class/Sumlin's first). The 2013 class was 9th, then 5th, then 11th, then 18th, 13th and 35th this year.
Tennessee: 25th in 2013, Dooley's last class/Butch's first. Butch had two top 10 classes before people realized he couldn't coach, then two classes in the teens. They're 20th this season.
To answer your question: Miami and UT saw a dip then bounced back. UGA never dipped. LSU dipped a little as of now. FSU never really dipped. A&M got a bump then reverted back to their space. UT is a roller coaster. Blue bloods tend to be more durable.
Except he's recruiting kids that fit his offensive scheme, which I'd want to believe everybody agrees is an improvement. Add to that keeping Foster and his sustained high level defense. Put those together and that's why people are excited for what some are arguing are similar to previous Beamer recruiting classes.
New coaches makes bigger differences frequently. This "it takes time to improve recruiting" is pollyanna BS.
Improving it is the easy part compared to maintaining it.
Someone on twitter says Dax won't make it because of the weather. That honestly worries me with Fedora being in his house yesterday. What did that squirmy UNcheat coach promise him?!
And we didn't send Bud to pick him up in the tank?!?!?
Bud needs to visit this week
He knows where he's going, final visits are for show.
The intent is more important.
Thats weird, he was supposed to come up last night. If he did that then he would have been fine because once it switches to rain the roada in bburg will be fine this afternoon to get back to watch the superbowl with his friends.
I thought he was supposed to already be there yesterday afternoon?
I've seen how this movie ends way, way too many times.
Recruiting sagas like Dax are always the most anxiety inducing. Every fanbase in for Dax right now thinks they are favorite, but we are always the constant. Clemson thinks it Clemson VT, UNC thinks its UNC VT, Stanford thinks its Stanford VT, etc. The UNC fans seem super confident that they will land Dax based on their insiders, but it should be noted that the UNC insiders have been wrong plenty of times.
VT Target/Signee Cam Goode got his 4th Star on ESPN and is now top 300. He have 10 4* on ESPN now
Does espn just assign more stars to everyone? Because espn has us ranked 21st while 247 composite has us at 22nd with only five 4*s
Depends on ranking system.
Lol sorry man couldn't resist lol
But when looking at 247 rankings look at the averages too . There are teams behind us that have higher average composites but are ranked lower because they don't have as much signees .
No its fine, it made me laugh actually. I was wondering if anyone had insights on the alotment of stars that ESPN allowed and if it differred from 247 as they obviously consider our teams to be very different yet ranked similarly. I understand the difference between a 3 and 4 star can be minute but even our next 5 247 composite recruits arent THAT close to the top 5. I wonder if espn has the rest of our class ranked really low.
Yes, ESPN give out wayy more 4*
But... Do they put more than 300 in their top 300?
THIS...IS...STUPID

/sssspraypaintedabs
More 4* = more clicks. Tell people what they want to hear. Smart.
the only click I need
Has Dax stated when he will announce his college decision? Is it expected to be on NSD?
I'm waiting for this thing to go till summer enrollments are projected to start. That way I'm not disappointed.
Where's the elephant?
#Sauces on 247 said they heard some buzz about 2 silent commits
2018 or 2019?
Buzz...so basketball commits?
Dammit, I knew I should have read down further before commenting. Me not TKP hard enough.
2019
Were they over 6'7"?
Oh, buzz about 2 silent commits. Never mind.
Whelp
No reason not to believe he's all Hokie
I want to be shocked and happy Wednesday I really do. His commitment and own or two others if UT and some other schools don't build up their classes puts tech around 20/21 for a class maybe.
I don't want to be Debbie downer but FUCK. Canceled his visit. Had an in home with 6 UNC people and now is committing on Wednesday.
fwiw CLTHokie said above this was the plan all along
Chatter over on 247 indicates we had an in-home with him (last night/today?) and it apparently couldn't have gone better. Didn't hear anything about us having an in-home.
Wed is NSD and he cancelled because of weather
Wednesday is NSD but they don't have to sign that day. Someone mentioned above he always wanted that day so I feel somewhat better.
Yea, but 99% of the guys do sign. I think you're reaching.
He was told not to come because of weather
Sorry to ask, but I live in LA. Is the weather that bad?
Im from Dax's area and I wouldn't wanna be driving up in this weather
As a northerner, I love this shit.

Up here in Michigan anything short of 6" is average ;)
Snow around an inch or so. Then sleet. Then rain. And now it's all a slushy freezing mess.
That mountain climb on I-77 at the border near Lambsburg is no joke in rain. Throw in freezing temps and fog/clouds, and I don't blame him at all.
I-77 in the fog can be a dangerous place.
Because Wednesday is National Signing Day.
That doesn't really mean anything.
Traditionally it has for the vast majority of recruits. I can't recall a substantial number of recruits extending their recruitments past NSD. Also consider now that there's an early signing period and most guys signed then, February's NSD essentially is committing late.
He was committing on NSD before his in-home visits with VT and UNC.
Are we still in the Hunt for JJB? Also what about Grant and that 4 star lineman people were talking about a couple weeks ago?
Yes we are. 247 is saying his A&M visit isn't going well. Us an Neb the teams to beat
Just curious where on 247 you're getting this info?? Nothing I've seen indicates there are 2 silent commitments. Also just checked the Texas A&M page and Wiltfong posted 2 hours ago that JJB visit to college station went well and the Aggie's feel like they're in it. Not calling you out as I truly hope these are true, but just curious where you've seen all this
Old intel.
I trust Wiltfong more than what I read this morning. Being far from home may be a factor
Sweet! Everything before today was that we were back in it due to the great in home and us being the most local school. Hope that holds true!
I think Dax decided months ago.
I think JJB has no idea what to do and needs the figure it out in 3 Days.
He has until he needs to enroll.
For those not on Twitter, from TKP recruiting:
Power move by Fuente who looks pretty pleased in the background.
CJF with that look:
lol
*Applies lip balm smugly*
EDIT: [Removed]
I dont have any issue with you passing on some recruiting information or being cryptic about it, but constantly repeating stuff word for word that is discussed on 247 for those of us that pay is an issue.
No worries I'll change it
EDIT: Have a good shot with Grant, Dax AND JJB
I just want to say that this was tremendous community moderation without people getting into an internet fight. I've legged you both for being awesome. Have a great Monday!
He was right. I'm drained from work and didn't word it well. It's not fair to the 247 folks that make a living off of inside info
No harm, no foul just a quick edit!
No worries man! Hopefully my original comment wasn't too much like this:
well probably time to end this slow Monday conversation before we get yelled at for being OT in a recruiting thread lol *ducks*
Someone is off topic in a recruiting thread?
via GIPHY
Next, they'll be throwing paper airplanes around here!
Land those three and it's close to top 20 class.
I think we land in top 20 with all 3.
Would be the nicest signing day surprise we've ever had
Adding all 3 would put us at a 230.34 composite. Just barely good enough for top 20 in 2 of the last 5 years. Rankings aside, that would be an amazing close to this recruiting cycle. Even just getting Dax would make most fans very happy at the depth of this class as well as our trajectory going forward.
I'm not sure consistently having a recruiting class above 20 is in the cards for us.
Rivals did their 5 year average in 2017 and we were 28th (LINK). I know some people are bigger fans of 247's composite but I couldn't find one. Here it is for the lazy:
1. Bama
2. Ohio State
3. FSU
4. LSU
5. UGA
6. USC
7. Auburn
8. Notre Dame
9. Texas A&M
10. Florida
11. Clemson
12. Tennessee
13. Oklahoma
14. UCLA
15. Miami
T16. Ole Miss
T16. Texas
T18. Michigan
T18. South Carolina
20. Oregon
21. PSU
22. Nebraska
23. Miss St.
24. Stanford
T25. Arkansas
T25. Kentucky
27. Michigan State
28. Virginia Tech
There are few programs above us that I see could see falling (MSU, Arkansas, Neb) and others that we should routinely beat (UK) but I'm pretty happy with a 20th ranked class.
As I was looking at what composite score usually puts teams in the top 20 I noticed the same thing. Every one of those top schools is either a historic program, or a very popular university for more than just football. I think if we could land one or two more of our top targets each year then we have the ability to fall between 17-23 every year. 15 doesn't sound crazy but when you click on the 15th best class in the nation and look at who they're pulling in you start to realize how far away we really are from that. It really depends on the depth of the class though and getting a lot of those high 3* guys instead of filler low 3* guys.
I think our ability to get a top 15 class will be dependent on our ability to sign a 5* player. As was mentioned elsewhere, that only happens ~once every 5 years (of course I'd be happy to see that change too). I completely agree that a bigger key to long term success is building depth in the high 3* area.
It will also be interesting to see what route Fuente's recruits take once they're here. A lot of Beamer's highly rated recruits flamed out (certainly not always his fault) or changed positions based on lack of depth elsewhere. It seems like Fuente is pulling in fairly well rounded classes. I think if he's able to keep more guys at their best positions, similarly rated classes could end up more successful. Only time will tell...
It's not the 5 star players. Its getting more mid-high 4 star top150 players. We have like 1 on the roster right now. All the 4 stars we have this class minus Turner are borderline 4 stars.
I think we should regularly out-recruit Ole Miss, Miss St, USCe, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mich St. Beyond the flash, I don't think it's crazy to think we recruit at or above Oregon and Nebraska level, either. It shouldn't be considered a stretch for us at all to hit 20. I think that should be about our worst case scenario. Getting into that 15 range every will be tough, but shouldn't be looked at as an impossiblility by any means.
Well Ole Miss has proven they can land top 10 classes, and if you think they don't have a lot to sell there, you've never been to Oxford. I agree we can move ahead of some fo those programs you mentioned, but I think you're maybe underselling some of those programs through lack of familiarity, particularly USCe and Ole Miss.
legally? And I'm not even talking bending the rules, which everyone does.
Legally? I think so. According to the bylaws of the NCAA? There'$ β½rβ¬ttΒ₯ much no Β’hanΒ’e.
Man, if you think 20th in the country should be our worst case scenario you're gonna be sorely disappointed. I'd love for that to be the case but Fuente can only do so much.
We've only been in the top 20 once in the last decade (18th in 2008), and you're mostly talking about SEC schools with significantly bigger budgets (plus MSU, which was a very strong brand pre-scandal).
Remember...the rankings are not linear.
Rough numbers here, but the distance between mid-teens and low 20s is about the same as the distance between the low 20s and mid-high 40s.
Right now, VT is as roughly as close to the mid-40's as it is to the mid-teens. Getting to 20 is not that big of a leap. Getting to 15 from 20 is a much bigger leap.
So...we won't even sniff a top 15 class?
Finally! APrimusHokie has come back to TKP!!!. But back to on topic business. Im going to be very happy Wednesday.
Gonna make it to any of those Primus/Mastodon shows announced last week?
May 20th is the date I'm looking at
Nice, I'm eyeballing the Portsmouth date. Mastodon puts on a great show, but it's been 5 or 6 years since I saw them. And I regret passing up on seeing Primus late last year when they came to RVA.
If they play jerry was a racecar im getting in that moshpit
I hope we sign Dax, JBB and Grant. But I am not holding my breath. As a loooong time Hokie, I remember when most of our signed players came from beating out ECU, U of R, VMI, W& M, Wake Forest and, maybe, NC State. We had some very good teams back then and even went to a few bowl games when there was not many bowl games. Now we are competing against OSU, Penn State, USCe, etc. We have came a long way, Baby. Losing out to PSU is a lot better than losing out to UofR. :-)
Crunchatize me Captain

Looks like a Yankee uniform...not that there is anything wrong with that. ;-)
Nah dude, those have pinstripes.
Yankee not Yankees Duh!! :-)
Been a while since I have been able to make any noise around here.
Here is my prediction. We get at least one, that being Dax. I wouldn't be at all shocked to get JJB and due to the pressure and attention Grant is getting I don't see it but his buddy coming here helps.
If we go 3 for 3 then man what a job our coaches did to close out. I honestly really excited for the steps our recruiting efforts have gone. It has been leaps and bounds better then in years past. Fuente is understanding the most effective way to use his guys and from the buzz I am hearing there is great reason to be excited for not only the class we are closing with but for next year. Momentum and effectiveness is something we are not used to. Depth is something we are not used too. I mean our first few commits could be OL for 2019.
Great job closing and we are in good hands.
As for the new hire, give it some time, this guy knows his stuff and is very effective.... This may not have been the hire everyone on the fan side wanted but when it comes to evaluating talent and having an ear to the recruiting cycle, this guy is going to be a good one.
Wait...who is his buddy?!?!?
I believe it was the walk on commit we got. Hunter Green a walk on QB. I read somewhere that they were close. I could have him confused with another average walk on. Unless it's another Sam Rogers, they all seem to blend together for me.
Glad I'm not the only one drinking on a Monday.
Oh good, I have some company. I'm on my "third" (my third is an 11.9% imperial stout in a 16 oz can)
I've almost finished my first - a growler of Big Bad Baptista Mexican chocolate imperial stout, at only 11%. Lost count of many times I filled the glass to get here though.
As far as I'm concerned you've only had one.
Well shit, I'm only on my 4th Old Tom Gimlet. I better catch up.
Not a competition! Sounds like we're all winners here! Never had Old Tom. Do I want to?
If you've ever been drinking gin and thought "I sure wish this was bourbon," then Old Tom gin is for you. Ransom Old Tom gin is barrel aged, and is phenomenal straight and in cocktails. It's a bit expensive at the VA ABC stores, but it's well worth it.
I'm more of a beer drinker, but I'm a fan of all things booze. So please riddle me this, what type of cocktail do you make with a gin that tastes like bourbon? One meant for gin or bourbon?
Or on the rocks?
So it doesn't taste exactly like bourbon, but it's made from a barley and corn mash and finished in barrels, so it's definitely bourbon-y. But still has all the botanicals of a gin. I typically use it in cocktails meant for gin, but really, most bourbon cocktails are just variations on cocktails that originally used gin as the base liquor anyway. It's especially handy for trying to make Prohibition-era drinks, since Old Tom was the preferred style of gin in the early 20th century. But it's also very good on the rocks, which is something that can't be said for most gins.
There are lots of things I drink and wish were bourbon. Water, sodas (only about half though), coffee, tea, milk, juices....
That's how I would record it on UnTappd.
So what's everyone drinking on Wed then? I've got some 4roses single barrel, which is new to me, but that I'm excited to try. Figure it'll be good in celebration or desolation, depending on how nsd goes. π
You already have the best thing. Love that Bourbon!
Just got the last bottle of Noah's Mill at the only store down here that occasionally has the Willet bourbons. The first pour is earmarked for celebrating tomorrow.
Coach Wiggins said at the Arlington VT recruiting night that the new coach is an offensive minded coach who will help us keep up with the blue blood offenses. HE really sold this guy as someone who knows his stuff and is a workhorse.
For what it is worth, a good friend who is plugged into Tennessee recruiting has told me for weeks that he doesn't think Grant sticks with Tennessee. He reaffirmed it with me this evening. We will see...
last text- Tennessee coaches think Grant will pick an ACC school.
FSU/UNC/VT
Visited FSU last weekend.
If he picked FSU, I would be dumbfounded. They loaded up the RB position the last two years. I would like to think it is between us and UNC based on path to the field. If I am right, I like our odds considering UNC's trajectory. I also think the UNC coaching staff doesn't have much permanence in it's future.
Insider info: Charley Wiles had a salad for lunch yesterday. He and Bud both looked relaxed. And then some kid was talking to them and wouldn't leave the table.
What could all this mean?
We won't know anything until tomorrow.
FTFY
Bud did not have a salad. Illuminati confirmed.
Steve Wiltfong just changed his crystal ball for JJB. It's VIP only, but reading the between the tea leaves he changed it from to Nebraska, and he didn't change it to A&M
So that means he either switched it to tOSU or VT.
If he switched to VT, wouldn't the graph show an uptick for Tech? As I said ^.......
I would guess so, unless 247 wants to be even more secretive on CB picks.
CBs rolling in for tOSU, including from the VT insiders.
Guess they didn't hate Columbus quite enough
Lost some faith but not all...
That's where I'm at. strong late pushes from tOSU and surprisingly TAMU.
Not all is lost yet though. Hang in there Hokies
Bunch of CBs going tOSU way, including Watkins.EDIT: Beat by a min.
OSU. Flood of 'em coming in for them. EGW describes it as a "strange, strange recruitment" since apparently JJB went from not liking OSU after his visit to heading there simply because they have room for him. So it is with CFB recruiting. Don't even waste your time trying to understand it.
Very strange. Sounds like Urban got into JJB's ear last night as tOSU had a spot somehow open up.
So it's a national reputation and history recruitment as opposed to current and potential situation.
I mean, pick one. In neither scenario would VT have the edge over OSU.
I know we're feeling like our program is on a general uptick, and it is. But this is not a "depends on what the kid wants" situation (EDIT: unless "what the kid wants" is to try to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond and not the reverse).
Sorry for the Debbie Downer - but this is pretty cut and dried, no?
We have a better current and potential situation than OSU? Really?
No.
There's no way to make that argument.
Looking at the rosters yes his playing time and potential are much higher at Tech.
"Potential".
Unpack that one for us. How is it different than "opportunity for playing time"?
I understand potential as something a player brings with him wherever he ends up. If he signs with the Nuts, his actual potential doesn't go up or down. Now, his chances of breaking the two-deep? That a whole 'nuther thang...
His potential to stand out on the field earlier is much higher at Tech I think. I think he is a roster filler at anOSU.
Got it. And I think you're right. He's a depth guy at OSU, but could become the next Trevon Hill at VT. (Who knows? Could be Trevon Hill for OSU, too - and they'd be thrilled to get that, I'd bet.)
'Potential', as you're using it, means 'possibility'. JJB has a chance at more playing time. There's potential for more playing time at VT. Just like a good business deal has potential to be a good money maker or driving a car after several drinks has the potential to end badly.
I was thinking of 'potential' as 'innate talent, raw athleticism, "god-given" natural ability'. As in "wow, he's really green and needs to add 30 pounds, but JBB's got real potential." I thought that you might be saying that the kid's natural ability would improve by choosing VT. But you were just using the word differently. Cool

Are they recruiting him as a DE or a TE? If it is as a DE then it is even stranger since Schiano is supposed to be leaving to be DC for the Patriots. Which won't happen until after NSD, of course.
All the frenzy surrounding the Schiano-to-Tennessee dumpster fire totally made me forget the fact that he's actually still a coach in Columbus after all
Frankly, I was surprised OSU wasn't the clear leader once it was announced they got involved. They're on a different level than all the other teams involved, VT included.
We have to take any reports about what recruits like or didn't like with a boulder of salt.
But momma didn't like Columbus!!!
no no no... momma didn't like Columbus because her baby wasn't a take when they visited. Now he is so it's all systems go for Ohio State.
Shoot, he didn't seem to like Columbus. Again, it's a weird one, just roll with it.
Does anyone other than OSU fans really like Columbus? Every time I go there, the best part of the trip is coming back home.
There are parts of it I really enjoyed living there but many are that are just plain Midwest.
I mean you could substitute VT for OSU and Blacksburg for Columbus and find many people who feel that way. Blacksburg is a beautiful place imo amongst others too but it is obviously not for everyone as well. I have had friends who went to visit the campus and left right away because they felt like it looked like a prison.
Are these people who refer to the ground as the "floor"?
To each his own I guess. I personally love the collegiate gothic architecture. Honestly a lot of our campus buildings look really, really similar to Duke, Princeton, and Boston College. The classical brick and white columns look is appealing too but pretty much commonplace in the South. I think our look sets us apart.
So the check from OSU cleared?
1 more day.... this has been a ride of a lifetime for everyone involved
Just you wait for '19.
Time to start drinking?
