Buzzketball returns to Cassell after a successful 2-0 road trip. That's in the past and now they must focus on a dangerous Miami team. Miami comes in having just dealt Pitt their 10th straight loss while the Hokies return after sorting out some demons with Chestnut Hills and Boston College.
Home game with a strong desire to provide a packed house. Cassell should be loud and ready to rock after the last few games have gone the Hokies way. Miami will be without one of its top players, Bruce Brown, who is out with an injury. Brown was putting up 11.4 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 4 APG as the primary playmaker at the top of the key. The area that the Hurricanes will likely miss Brown the most though is the defensive end, where he was averaging 1.4 SPG and almost 1 BPG, while grabbing 5 defensive rebounds each game. This will be the thirty fifth meeting between the Hokies and Hurricanes. Miami leads the all-time series 20-14. The Hokies have won their last two home games against the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes are coached by Jim Larranaga, who has been at Miami since 2011. Miami has won at least twenty games in five of his six seasons, and are working towards another this year. Larranaga has taken the Hurricanes to three NCAA tournament berths. He also guided them to an ACC Championship both in the regular season and tournament in 2012-2013.
Defensively, Miami runs three different defensive schemes, primarily playing a high pressure man to man which usually rotates into the Scramble defense which is essentially a man to man defense with some zone trapping techniques utilized and then rounding it out with a curveball they call a 3-2 Disrupting Camouflage Defense which is a high pressure, perimeter zone defense that sags to the middle of the court. The 3-2 Disrupting Camouflage is almost the reverse of the Scramble defense. This defense has players back off their offensive players as if they were going to trap but then they shift into passing lanes rather than close the trap.
Offensively, the Hurricanes switch between a four out, one in and a three out, two in Motion Offense, based on the personnel on the floor. When Miami is in with two bigs, those bigs typically rotate between the top and bottom of the lane to create gaps in the defensive coverage while also opening up opportunities for the guards to drive to the basket. The Hurricanes usually attempt 21 threes per game but this is a game against the Hokies, where everyone seems to add 5-10 attempts.
What does that mean for the Hokies?
The Hokies are getting an opponent with a very similar offensive approach especially in terms of guard focused scoring. Tech needs to be able to keep Miami out of the lane. Playing interior defense is what the Hokies do much better than playing perimeter defense so hopefully they are able to slow the Miami guards down this time. The Hokies should also apply more pressure at the point with Bruce Brown out of this contest to try to force a few extra turnovers.
This game should be a high scoring affair, with the fast paced offense that both these squads run, Miami may try to slow the pace down with their bigs which could take the Hokies out of their rhythm. The Hokies just need to remember what got them to where they are now. Shooting the ball proficiently. Make your shots and stay in the game.
The Hokies need to find that rhythm of turning energetic defense into a quick scoring offense today. They should be able to keep the Hurricanes a step behind if they force early turnovers, get out in transition and take confident shots. Miami once it sets up its defense though is a much harder opponent to face. They rank in the top five in the ACC in almost every defensive category. They are especially good at keeping opponents off the board and out of the paint, allowing the fewest interior shots of any ACC team so far.
Lastly, the Hokies have to find a way to limit the turnovers. Too many times to count during ACC play, the Hokies have committed turnovers on more than 20% of their possessions. You cant win consistently when you give the ball away that many times. The last few contests they have managed to limit turnovers to 10 or fewer and it has paid off with W's.
Hurricanes Backcourt
Lonnie Walker (#4) 6'4, 192 Lbs Freshman Guard is averaging 11 PPG, 3 RPG, 1.6 APG, and 1 SPG. He is shooting 36% from behind the arc and 43% overall. Also shoots 77% from the line. Walker is a bigger guard that likes to get into the lane to score. He is forced into the spotlight with Brown out and will need to find a way to add more to his game.
Ja'Quan Newton, (#0) 6'2, 187 Senior Guard comes in averaging 8 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.9 APG and 1.1 SPG. He is shooting a miserable 17% from outside and at the free throw line, shooting 61%. He is better known for his quick first step and ability to drive inside. So far on the season he is shooting better than 46% inside the arc. Newton will be the primary ball handler for the Hurricanes with Brown out and is excellent at driving in and distributing to a perimeter shooter so the Hokies need to be prepared to cover down when he attempts to go inside. This injury had brought Newton back into the spotlight as he was forced to the bench this year after being the second leading scorer last season. Poor shooting seems the most likely cause for his reduced minutes this season.
Dejan Vasilkevic, (#1) 6'3, 198 Lbs Sophomore Guard is averaging 8.9 PPG and 2.5 RPG in a backup role across 16 minutes per game. So far this season he is shooting 51% inside, 38% from behind the arc and 85% from the line. Miami is forced to use him for a larger role today with the injury to Brown. His improvement shooting outside should be a concern for the Hokies.
Chris Lykes, (#2), 5'7, 160 lbs Freshman Guard is averaging 7.9 PPG, 1 RPG, 2.1 APG and will likely see more minutes at the top of the key with Brown out. He is the primary backup point guard.
Hurricanes Frontcourt
Dewan Huell, (#20) 6'11, 220 Lbs Sophomore Forward is one of the most improved players in the ACC over last season. He has essentially doubled his production compared to last year, averaging 13.4 PPG and 6.9 RPG. There will be some time that these Huell and Lawrence are both on the court together.
Anthony Lawrence Jr., (#3), 6'7, 185 Lbs Junior Forward is averaging 9 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.2 APG and 1.2 SPG. Lawrence is shooting 51% inside and is the Hurricanes biggest threat from outside, hitting 48% from beyond the arc. He is only a 66% free throw shooter.
Ebuka Izundu, (#15) 6'10, 231 Lbs Sophomore Center is averaging 4.4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and almost 1 BPG in about 13 minutes per game. He definitely struggles staying out of foul trouble, averaging 2.4 fouls per contest over those 13 MPG. He does shoot 67% from the floor and 42% from the line so keeping him out of the game considering our size disadvantage could be huge.
What to expect from Miami?
The Hurricanes have greatly improved their foul discipline over last season so its unlikely they will be in foul trouble early. Normally Miami would rely mostly on their guards to do their scoring but the Hurricanes may look to take advantage of the Hokies height deficiency. Larranaga still got great scoring from his top two guards but the bigs provide an extra bonus that could decide the game.
The Hokies need to disrupt the offensive rebounding in this contest either by having position to rebound or cleanly blocking the second attempt. They can ill afford to give the Hurricanes second chances.
Three point shooting will be another interesting facet of this game to watch. Do the Hurricanes do like many of Tech's opponents and increase their perimeter shot quantity or do they stick to their normal game plan? Last time out the Hurricanes only shot 33% from outside, but that was sufficient for how poorly Tech did from outside.
Miami is learning to play without Brown. They managed to beat Pitt but it was ugly doing so. Expect to see some roster disruption play a factor in this contest as well.
The Hokies
Tech needs to go fast again in this game. Tech needs to find the pace it had in the first half against Boston College. Get out and up early and don't let the Hurricanes back in the contest.
Having Hill, Bibbs and Nickiel Alexander Walker hit their shots opens the floor so much more for Clarke, Robinson, and Blackshear in terms of getting inside or having the space inside to create their shots.
Pound the ball inside to Blackshear. Blackshear also needs to find a way to pull down some rebounds tonight. He has been a double-double machine so far in conference play, so has to continue that today.
CUT DOWN ON TURNOVERS. Keep them below 10 and expect to win
Highlight of the BC Game
An Almost Statement Win. Tip of the hat though goes to Robinson. He kept the Eagles off balance at every turn.
In Closing
If the Hokies can get Blackshear and Hill or Bibbs going tonight than this game should take care of itself as the others typically deliver enough to get it done. This is a team that is very susceptible to the inside out game, so forcing Miami to react to both the perimeter and the lane is critical.
The Miami bigs have a tendency to get in foul trouble so providing Clarke and Robinson the space to drive inside along with Blackshear being able to draw contact down low could force Larranaga out of his game plan. The less of 6'10 and 6'11 that see the floor against the Hokies the better off we are in this contest.
This is not an absolute must win considering the Hokies current record but every win that can be added from here on in is that much more security of hearing Virginia Tech called to the NCAA Tournament field.
Hokies win 83-75 because of the home cookin, and these guys ability to fill up the basket.

Comments
Best I could do with the time I have. Go Hokies
Don't sell yourself short! I always appreciate the write-ups and insight.
Let's get the W today boys!
Thanks for your efforts. I appreciate your commentary.
Agree with you about the turnovers. I'm guessing Buzz does as well. Take care of the ball...
Some more big news today.
That's cool.
I'm hoping that VT three-point shooting is good that day and UVa comes out cold.
Does anyone know of a good bar with good beer to watch VT basketball in Arlington/Falls Church?
TKP commonly gathers at First Down for football. Not sure about basketball but the Bar is good.
And of course Spider Kellys is usually full of HOKIES for games.
Rustico in Ballston has a really good beer selection and a couple TV's behind the bar.
Hope the white out is successful, our tickets don't say it... if it weren't for TKP we would probably be in maroon.
Good start so far
scratch that
I guess we already know who from Miami will have a career day.
Edit: Not a terrible start though.
Can someone guard the fat kid that keeps driving by everyone? Good lord.
Pretty terrible defense so far. We're just letting that white dude drive to the lane and providing absolutely no help defense so he's just getting easy layups
We look listless. Everything they score there's no energy to get the ball upcourt fast
When did we get Princess Leia on the team?
Channeling his inner Deron Washington.
That was my first thought too. Is Chris Clarke a big star wars fan? Is there a ComicCon in Blacksburg that he might be preparing for?
Boy are we struggling to defend the dribble penetration.
Boy are we struggling to defend
the dribble penetration.Very lackluster performance from everyone besides NAW so far. Pretty uninspired effort on defense and shots aren't falling. We're just getting outperformed in every way possible so far. Gotta limit the mistakes and take a deep breath
Bleh first half so far
Wow... this is UGLY
Getting ugly. No energy today.
Fuck this, man. What the hell are we doing
Frustrating to watch a guy can a three that deep but our defensive closeouts are turrible. At least make it a contested shot.
@Mark Umansky, were gonna need a good shot of Chris Clarke for one of those 'Who Wore it Better' comparisons with Princess Leia.
No energy right now.
On a positive note, NAW coming into his own before our eyes. Outperforming everyone on the team by a good bit.
Wish it made the scoreboard look better...
Remember when Ahmed Hill was an energy guy who was good at defense?
This team is so frustrating to watch. Either they're hot or complete brickfests
Halfcourt offense is pathetic
NAW single-handedly keep us in this game.
So I guess I will be cleaning up like my wife asked
Miami is controlling every aspect of this game.
It would be nice to pull under ten by the half.
man am I glad I had to pick up from an auction, now only wish it had taken me longer
Gotta make it to halftime and get it to about 5 or 6. Come out hot in the second half and never look back. Just try to stay close until halftime and we should be fine, they're just shooting very well right now. Also, we need to figure things out on offense b/c their defense has been giving us hell so far
Just keep ignoring wide open Horne on the roll every time.
At least our young kids are playing well!
Wow
Why does ESPN keep saying St Johns got their first Conference win today against Duke? They're not in the ACC.
Maybe they know something we don't?
What an effing terrible half. This and the UVA game just show we match up terribly with teams that can play great halfcourt defense. Our offense has looked awful this game. Would love to see Bede play a lot more instead of Wilson. Devin has been an absolute liability on the offensive end
Syracuse game too
Valid point. Tried to block that game out because it was New Year's Eve and didn't wanna ruin the night
Miami is a great defensive team and our halfcourt offense is pathetic. We gotta start scoring in transition and getting stops
I don't understand why we always play the other team's style. We're going to get killed playing half court. Why not press the tempo?
...I also wonder where our "drive/kick/get to the foul line" offense is?
Notice we scored 1 pt on the last 2mins?
Also, WTF do they keep referring to Wilson as "the football player". He is playing his FOURTH season in BBall (and lead the team in scoring his freshman year). Played like 6 plays in football one season.
Freshmen are keeping us in this right now. Horne & NAW playing really well. Gotta slowly chip away at this lead. Pretty decent start so far to the 2nd half
7-0 run!!
Ok nice little 7-0 run. Gotta keep it up
Hit some free throws and we can keep chipping away!
I've been back and forth watching the game while trying to get some things done around the house. Did I miss something? What's with the lineup? Do we have guys hurt or in foul trouble?
You didn't miss anything... I've been wondering the same thing the entire game. Very little KBJ and almost zero Chris Clarke.
Thanks. I was really curious about Clark. Seems like we could really use him with the lack of energy we've had.
He got 2 quick/lazy fouls and sat.
Ah.
Anytime we get close we come down the court, miss a shot and the UM hits a 3, it's so frustrating.
And just like that all the hard work to close in is scratched
Fuckkkk. We lose this game and our path to the tournament is 10x harder. Literally every time we do something right we do 10 things wrong
It might just be me because I live in Roanoke, but the announcer keeps pissing me off every time he says this game is in the Roanoke Valley. Roanoke and the New River Valley are close in proximity, but very different!
Grinding my gears as well.
CHRIs Clarke got no handles
that sequence at the 11 minute left Mark is indicative of the day, foul, Let them hit free throws, turn it over immediately then allow them to get not one but two offensive rebounds and then they hit the three Pointer
Somehow we're only down 7 with 7 minutes to go. Gotta close strong and somehow pull out a W today. Tournament chances get much harder with a loss today. Come on please we need the win
So will they be home venue for NIT?
who? miami?
Tech.
Finally some transition offense
Damn. I love Bibbs.
Take over JB!
Well this just got interesting
I know we just made it a three point game but if I see Miami get one more long rebound on a missed three pt shot, I am gonna rip a huge hunk of hair out of my head.
Glad we've been resting up all game for this run /s
5 with some AUTHORITY
Shooting 5-13 from the FT line today. That could be the story of the game. We just shoot our season average and we have a 1-2 point lead right now. Still, none of that matters right now. It's a 3 point game with under 4 min to go and we have a chance to pull out the win. Let's Go!!
Crazy hair guy killin me rn
That's terrible individual basketball right there by Robinson.
Lonnie is balling
Lawrence has 4 fouls...yet we're not going after him.
This is one of my consistent complaints that is all on the coaching staff. There has to be someone keeping track an making it a point of emphasis but it never happens with this team. He had four points, four rebounds and an assist after his fourth foul. His rebounds led to three more points. Measured seven point impact and we lose by nine.
I keep thinking that if we could get some defensive boards, it would be Miami playing catch-up to us. I don't know how many second- and third-chance shots they've gotten...
Playing flat-footed and not boxing out.
Miami has 16 second chance points
Thanks.

It's an issue...among others. Points off turnovers (POT) and second chance points (SCP) routinely hurt this team.
Syracuse:
POT - 11
SCP - 12
UVA
POT- 23
SCP - 4
PITT (obligatory fuck Pat Narduzzi)
POT- 9
SCP - 7
Wake
POT- 13
SCP - 12
Louisville
POT - 20
SCP - 15
FSU
POT - 20
SCP - 5
UNC
POT - 2
SCP - 11
Notre Dame
POT - 11
SCP - 18
Boston College
POT - 20
SCP - 12
Miami
POT - 13
SCP - 16
I'm not arguing that we win those games if we eliminate those stats or even cut them half, but it would likely make the game much, much more interesting at the end.
Oh and to add a little salt in the wound - the Kentucky game, where this team played lights out and should have won - POT 36/SCP 18
Sideshow Bob doesn't look like a great FT shooter.
Hey...next game, let's play like the last 7-10 mins the whole time...
Turnover Chain???!! For a long entry pass? F*cking idiot.
Good job letting him run free
How many times are we going to let that happen. Also, worst FT shooting team in the ACC naturally is shooting really well against us on the road. Why not right?
Every. Damn. Game.
I never understand the strategy from Buzz at the end of close games. We always seem content to trade 2's for 2's rather than trying to chip away with 3 point looks .
It starts off smart but he always tends to wait too long going for 3. Like the time will be getting tight, we're down 7 to 8 pts and we're still going for 2s. At some point you have to pull a 3 to keep yourself alive. Otherwise, you're just delaying how long you bleed out
He's playing for points and time not just points. Drive and get fouled, you score without seconds off the clock. Score quick and you get points with minimal clock loss. If we could execute the press or if miami's 60% FT shooter would miss something it would have worked. Or, alternatively, we don't play the whole game in a manner where we end up just out of striking distance under a minute left.
I know. That's why I said it starts out smart. But there comes a time when you need to realize its not going to work out and hoist a 3. He has a tendency to wait too late imo. I didn't think it was all that pronounced this game specifically, but its something I've seen the team do.
I thought the time management was pretty good. I believe we had the ball down 4 with about 30 seconds left and attempted an inbounds 3 point play. I believe that was the first 3 attempted and would have gotten us in the game. Miami going 1 of 2 on their FTs down the stretch certainly helped too.
When you're down and have to foul anyway...why not just CRASH the boards on every shot. You either get the board to foul.
First half defensive effort is what cost us this game
Wait? First we're an inconsistent mid-tier team. Now we're a quality opponent?
Third conference home loss of the season. As is always the case you have to defend home court and try to steal a few on the road, we haven't done that. The next three games are going to be brutal - a hot NC State team, UVA and DOOK on the road. Wake me up when it's over.
I wish there was a way to know if lazy tech is gonna show up so I dont waste my time getting my hopes up
Fuck this game and Fuck miami. Our chances to make the tourney are basically slim to none now. Abysmal performance by Hill (0 points), Blackshear (2 points), and Clarke. Shot terribly from the FT line. Can't lose that game at home. Fuck
Disagree. And Blackshear didn't play enough minutes to contribute.
Hill especially was awful. Took the same dumb floater off the glass shots he did his freshman year, except did it without his freshman energy or good defense
The mistakes that continually cost us games are the ones that should be fixed at a much earlier point in the season. Regardless, it was good to see the young guys play well and I still have faith.
miami just made more plays than the Hokies. miami won!
One of the best officiated games I have seen in a long time. No complaining about the refs from me.
Disappointing that one the worst free throw shooting teams did well today, and we lost by our missed free throws.
Didn't make free throws, God awful frustrating turnovers, Miami shot the lights out, and we played lazy defense at the worst times.
This team knows how to piss me off when my hopes get up.
I'll put money we'll play well enough to get snubbed from the dance despite this team having the talent to have 4 more wins this year.
We had 9 turnovers. I'll take that every single outing.
Bad game, bad hair, bad day.
So, Chris is officially banned from wearing the dreads like that.
via GIPHY
I mean... We lost, maybe I was thinking too much of last year but I wasn't expecting a win.
That said, from the little bit of the game I was able to watch, it looks like NAW and Bede might be starting to find their game. If they can continue to progress, this might be one step back before the two steps forward.
I really feel like at the end of the FSU game NAW turned a corner with his intensity and willingness to impose himself on the game.
Bede looked good for his long run in today's game. I think he will take a nice step forward next season.
PJ didn't look like he had the "deer in headlights" look that so many bigs have had at VT.
Haven't seen Pig in a while???
VT lost to a team that has plenty of talent and is well coached. They made some plays at the end of the game and VT couldn't match them. This is playing in the ACC, there is a chance to try again in a couple of days.
I want more Pig! Horne was indeed great, and as someone else pointed out, wide open rolling to the basket on almost every single possession! He needs to get the ball more next game.
If it makes anyone feel better, Duke lost to 11-13 St. John's today
I was amazed that Duke was playing a non-con game in Feb.
