National Signing Day is Tomorrow!!!

Mike Farrell from rivals is on ESPNU Radio. He says JJB is down between Nebraska and OSU. No love for the Hokies :-(

He also thinks 'Bama will only get 1 5* tomorrow.

I have a question, 247 lists us as having 5 remaining targets. How many do you think we will land?

How many do you think we will land?

2. I don't know which 2 but 2.

1 (Dax) or 2 (Dax and Grant)

Feel good about Dax and Grant.
Chatman to Miami.
Walker to PSU.
JJB - VT still in it, but losing steam. As I shared elsewhere - strong late pushes from TAMU and tOSU.

I would have agreed with him a few days ago. JJB's recruitment has been wild since the early signing period and has been exactly the same way in the last few days leading up to NSD.

I am very confident that we get Dax. I am fairly confident that we get Grant. While a lot of folks are locking in Ohio State for JJB, I doubt anyone is willing to bet the farm on where he goes. I wouldn't waste time following Chatman and Walker.

Oh how I have missed 22 in the backfield... Scruggs (dammit) Suggs wore it well

Patterson, Ellis, and Tisdale all just received a 4* rating by 247.

Wow, only 25 recruits got the bump and three of them are ours. It's a low sample size but that's still pretty impressive. By my count, only two schools had two players who got bumped, and we were the only one with three.

Talent evaluation is going to be the "back-door" into the upper echelon of programs. I truly believe that. That's why I don't question Fuente's hiring of the 10th assistant, I trust he sees something in the guy. As a fan base we have to trust the people who are in charge, else we're never truly behind our team. Having QP, Ellis, and Tisdale get bumps is a reflection of what our coaches are seeing, and what the rest of the college ranks aren't (as quickly).

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I agree with you on this, I can't count how many players we scouted early that either committed to the good guys or somewhere else and got major bumps throughout the process. On top of the 3 listed, De'von Graves, Baptiste, Alim McNeill, and others that aren't on the top of mind. The talent evaluation side we seem to do extremely well in, now we just have to focus on converting lots of those guys to Hokies and not doing the early recruiting work for some other team.

That's the key! We gotta learn to close strong. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to start to do so.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

At some point we can't ask more of the coaches we have to look what can be done to make Tech more attractive to these kids. I don't even pretend to know what that would be or how to get there for Tech.

I got some beers. Let's drink 'em!

Welcome to Hokie Nation, Elijah Davis!

I think we definitely get Elijah now. Also, we have no excuse to not get multiple talented rbs because of our system if FSU can grab this many.

Apples and oranges.

Not entirely. Even though they're superior at recruiting, the logic of "our system or roster hurts our recruiting at a certain position" goes out the window when they have 3 of the best running backs in the entire country commit in the same year. We just can't close on those guys for some other reason. Saying it's because of our system or roster is clearly not it when you see this happening.

I'm too old to start drinking this early in the morning. I need some good news now.

Hokie fan | W&M grad

Honestly, I would like some surprises, but if everything goes the way it probably will, and we just walk away with Dax as our big pull, I think I'd be okay with that. Complacency at it's best.

UPDATE: JJB announcement is delayed due to weather. It will likely be around 11

As I said previously, this has continued to be a rollercoaster. It's reported that JJB has changed his mind 3-4 times in the past 24-48 hours. That doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies as it's typically these types of recruitments where we lack the "salesman/closer" types to seal the deal at the last second.

With that said, it could very well end up being the Hokies, but I'm tempering expectations on this one.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you can blame the coaches for lack of a sales pitch when a kid is changing his mind that much. Sometimes we just have to accept that we put in our best effort, but the kid has a tough decision to make and they're being pulled in a million different directions.

I mean, heck... if it's true that Grant told the coaches yesterday afternoon that he was coming to B'burg, what more could they realistically do?

I think it's just the nature of the beast when you're dealing with 17-18 year old kids.

if it's true that Grant told the coaches yesterday afternoon that he was coming to B'burg, what more could they realistically do?

Willie Taggert sure was able to do something when talking to him in the afternoon. Guy got him to commit after a single visit and after he'd 'verbaled' to a different school.

The notion that all these other schools 'recruit themselves' is false. They bust their ass and have a strong sales pitch. Something Taggert sold to Grant spoke to him enough to renege on whatever he said to Fuente. Our staff needs to be able to better identify what 'that' is.

I think it may be beaches and warm.

Get Angry, Bud!

Ever been to a beach in Tallahassee? (There aren't any). Granted, it's not much of a drive to some, but we're not talking ocean front property here.

I mean, if you want to compare beaches between Blacksburg and Tallahassee, I feel like there will be an obvious winner. Also, I bet our recruiting record would be better if NSD was during the summer when Blacksburg is amazing and perfect weather, instead of February when it is cold and windy and definitely not better than Tallahassee.

Get Angry, Bud!

If a guy had committed to our coaching staff, then flipped the night before NSD after talking on the phone to Taggert, that's closing on a recruit. It's not "warmer weather that we'd never be able to compete with."

If he actually shifts over to safety there is nothing a VT coach could have said to keep him at Tech.

VT doesn't need QB's, and yet we were able to reel DeJuan Ellis back in.

We need to get talent on campus and then find ways to get them on the field.

I'm not beat up about losing Grant to FSU. We're going to lose most kids to them, but to write this off as "well he wanted to play safety. Nothing we could've done" doesn't make sense to me.

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

And everyone including Ellis know he isn't playing QB. TECH saw Grant as a RB, told him that's where we need and want you. FSU says hey we don't need RB's how about safety and kid says sure, you want ZB to say ok sure we will move you to safety even though we don't need safeties and need RB'S?

Switching to safety is a red herring. The VT staff sees Grant as an NFL RB. The expectation was that he was headed to VT right up until his courtesy call to ZB this morning to say that he was headed to FSU.

I mean, what do you want me to say? 3 different FSU coaches have out-recruited 2 different VT coaches consistently. No salesman is actually that good. Its just that the product they are selling is better. The best salesman in the world wouldn't be able to compete with a mediocre salesman if his product was worse. You can talk about closing or pushing harder or being more proactive or whatever, but the bottom line seems to be that our school doesn't sell as well as FSU, regardless of the coaching staff.

Thats not true and coaches will tell you having the right logo on the shirt can be enough

Keep calm, Gobble on

I'm continually amazed people don't understand this - and naively believe winning a few more games, installing a sexier offense, and being able to sell ice to an eskimo are the keys to recruiting.

I think it's both. If we had a Cinderella run and won a Natty you better believe it will help our recruiting, but the Alabama, Ohio State, and Texas logo do carry a ton of weight with recruits. It helps when everyone of your games is televised (a lot in prime time) and you have a ton of brand recognition. At the end of the day it's the Coach, look at what Kirby, Dabo, and James Franklin have able to do. Or look at LSU after Saban/ Bama before Saban or Florida After Urban

IF there was a cinderella run and won a Natty, it would help recruiting? That's fantastic, but it just doesn't work that way. What non-blue blood has won a national championship ON THE FIELD (and not on paper, like Brigham Young or GT)? Zero. The only two who have gotten to the final game are VT and Oregon.

Besides VT did have a cinderella run to the natl championship game and a long run of successful seasons - how much did that help recruiting? Some, but not that much. It certainly didn't move VT into the top tier; it just improved it's position in the 2nd tier.

At the end of the day, it's not really the coach. Neither Saban @ Michigan St nor Meyer at Utah nor Franklin @ Vandy put National Championship caliber teams on the field. But put them at a blue blood and...voila, hall of fame. Sure, a bad coach or bad situation can bring a blue blood program down temporarily, but there are probably several dozen coaches out there that could field a national championship caliber team on the field at a blue blood school like those you mention.

Clemson definitely wasn't a blue blood. They took a 20 year hiatus between conference championships.

Always choose joy.

I'm not sure what this has to do with my point about it not being all about the coach, but I'm glad it got upvotes.

Just because Clemson took a hiatus on the field, it doesn't mean it took a hiatus on the recruiting trail.

They may not have been the recruiting juggernaut they are now, but they were a top 15-ish program from a recruiting standpoint even during their "hiatus".

And there is a world difference between being top 25-ish and top 15-ish.

My point wasn't about coaching. It was about your first paragraph.

What non-blue blood has won a national championship ON THE FIELD (and not on paper, like Brigham Young or GT)? Zero.

If you're a blue-blood program, you don't go 20 years between conference championships.

Always choose joy.

So Michigan better win one soon then uh?

Miami better as well

So if your post wasn't about coaching and it wasn't about recruiting, what was it about? Performance on the field? What does that have to do with recruiting being about the coaching?

Being a blue blood on the field and a blue blood on the recruiting trail are two somewhat different things. Maybe not 20 years of subpar results, but Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, have had significantly less than blue blood results on the field recently, but still recruit at a high level.

Some folks may want to believe it's about the coach and some big wins because it means VT has a chance, but it's simply not.

Let's Go

I should clarify as I wasn't trying to take a massive dig at our coaches - it somewhat just comes down to recruiting styles and how we "sell."

I cannot think of recruit that truly came down to the 11th hour where VT's coaches gave a last minute pitch and they ended up choosing VT - 99% of the time we end up on the wrong end of that. The majority of recruiting battles that we win are won previously and then announced. If you look at the big recent recruits we have won, we got into game early and developed a long standing relationship and sell that relationship and the fact that we've recruited them the longest. This ties into creating the "home" feel that we're selling with "This is Home." This is a tremendous nod to our ability to evaluate talent.

The bluebloods and staffs with "salesman/closer" types can swoop in at the last second and have mastered how to get ahold of recruit's ears. JJB was quoted shortly after his announcement stated that it "really came down to relationships." I'm not trying to knock a 17-18 kid, but from what I've read he had the best relationships with Frost and his staff and VT. anOSU came in late (with a committable offer), and then was unsure of actual availability to space. Being able to sell their past month's recruiting as "the best relationship" is what a great recruiter of the "salesman" type does.

JJB was quoted shortly after his announcement stated that it "really came down to relationships."

Maybe I'm being overly skeptical but the quote comes off to me as a safe talking point rather than necessarily the full truth. Sticking to basic platitudes is easiest way to avoid upsetting other programs and keep people from questioning the decision.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

β€œWhen life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

And that's partly what I'm getting at. The reality is Ohio State has a lot to sell, Schiano and Urban sold it, and JJB bought it.

Completely agree. It's just crazy. I compare that with Duke getting the top three players in basketball (and 4 of the top 10, IIRC). That's a level of recruiting that only a few can reach.

The use of the internet and recruiting services will only further consolidate power. We are lucky we made the ascent in the 90s and 00s that we did or we would probably be stuck there with today's recruiting climate.

Article on Jean-Baptiste's decision

"At Ohio State, the challenge to play at the highest level and the ability to compete for a national championship is very important to him," Campanile said. "That is ultimately the factor that won out."

Hate to see that one... I firmly believe that we are on the brink of a big leap in recruiting, but stuff like this is a bit disheartening. We need one Hokie football team to ball out for a year and then we'll start reeling in more of the 4-stars like Jean-Baptiste and start snagging a couple guys like KJ Henry.

Thing is that we have had some reason good teams over the last 10 years with a lot of success and never saw much of an inherent reward from recruiting. Unless by good team you mean a team that surprises everyone and wins a chip, but otherwise I think we kinda max out at between 17-25.

I know what he means. I think we're recruiting better overall than we ever have. A couple of years more like this and we might start winning more upper-echelon games, and winning more of these close recruiting battles. Top 25 is great. Top 15 or 20 would blow me away. I don't think it's impossible. Let's just see what happens if we have a good year next year, and win some of those premier games.

There is no "we can't recruit higher than x" law of physics. The trajectory of the program overall has steadily up during the time I've been watching it.

Totally agree. :)

This is the one area where Beamer aged really fast - recruiting. We were still trying to lock down VA with a limited staff when everyone else was hiring additional staff to expand their recruiting footprint to wherever the best guys were. I don't see that happening with the current staff, and think that as we get more high profile wins we will get more high profile recruits. Not saying we will beat out OSU anytime soon, but slide that average down by getting our best class yet a few times.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Beamer had some really good classes. Not near the couple years, but he has recruited better than Fuente at times. I agree, still plenty of time to improve. I just think there are limitations to recruiting at VT that won't be overcome.

Location, location, location being one of them

There are many, many reasons schools don't become regular top 15 recruiting schools. That is why there is so little turn over at the top despite schools spending $$$,$$$,$$$ to get there. The odds are certainly against us doing so. You are very realistic to think we won't overcome them. But as a fan, I enjoy thinking we will be the team to beat the odds and do the unlikely.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

This is why I don't care much for recruiting. Well, there are a few reason, first off I think it is inherently creepy as hell, but secondly there is less of an opportunity for luck to affect the outcome. I just prefer to invest my time and energy into the actual team season. Even with our average classes, we can still have a magical season. We see it happen across the country every year. We just won't ever be a team that expects it every season. But I'm ok with that.

Beamer had one bad year on paper - his last year (which wasn't without an assist from the fanbase).

Otherwise his recruiting on paper was pretty consistent.

(which wasn't without an assist from the fanbase).

What exactly do you mean by this?

Probably the fact that Beamer wanted to do 30 years and Bristol, but was being forced out by the UNC game in his last year.

Beamer wasn't 'forced' out by fans, or anyone. He was getting paid a ton of money, wasn't as effective at his job as he should have been, and was suffering from some significant health issues. I love Frank, but VT football is bigger than Frank is. It was his time to hang it up, and that's to no fault to fans.

What you just said isn't mutually exclusive with him being asked to step down

Agree. I think VT's consistent ceiling is the high teens.

Unfortunately it isn't that much of a leap from say, 25 to 18. This real problem is it is a considerable leap from 18 to, say, 12.

If you notice, the gap this year between Miami and VT is about the same as the gap between VT and UVa.

Bronco prefers to coach up the players he has

How much longer does Bronco realistically have there before they fire him? Absolutely no real results on the field or in recruiting, and it seems like a lot of the fans have soured on him already, but would they really buy out another contract this soon?

This will be his last year.

The new AD came from UGA, she's going to give him a year and it's not going to go well. If that team wins 4 games, I will be shocked.

It's standard for an AD to give someone a year but especially after a "successful" 6-7 year.

Keep an eye on Colorado State's Mike Bobo. He was Richt's OC at UGA when Carla Williams was Assistant AD there so she knows him well. And many UVA higher ups feel that they were really close to getting Richt when he picked UGA over them in 2001 and they also felt like they had a good shot at him in 2015 when he went back to Miami. (Oddly enough, I was with a lot of the UVA athletic admin when it was announced Richt was going to Miami, they were totally bummed). To get Bobo would be like getting a Richt proxy.

Doesn't matter who they hire. That school is completely and utterly dysfunctional when it comes to knowing how to support a football program. I'm not convinced if any legitimate rebuild there isn't going to be a 5-10 year process just to get them up to the level of being a contender in the division when they are senior laden.

This current recruiting class combined with last year, that program is going to be UGLY for a while. Even if they are able to bring in a good player or two, they are going to have horrible depth. I don't even think they could seriously compete in any G-5 conference for the next 3-4 years. And once you get into that stage, its a death spiral to complete irrelevance that is incredibly difficult to recover from.

UVA has also been lagging behind in the facilities aspect of the college football arms race. At the very least, Bronco got the administration to commit to fundraising for a new football ops building.

I think it's an underrated aspect of their recruiting struggles, but I do agree with you that there's a huge institutional stumbling block for UVA football.

Bronco just turned the team around, and took them to their first bowl game in a loooooong time. They are more likely to give him an extension than fire him.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I'm pretty confident that the majority of UVA fans aren't sold on Bronco and are ready to move on already. Even though he made a bowl there is very little excitement around the program. it hurts that his recruiting has been so poor and his limited success has been with transfers and now a few Hawaiians (LDS community). I think it would be easier to give him a pass if he was making inroads with VA players but he's had nearly zero success and that doesn't look to be improving. Attendance remains abysmal and the new AD came from UGA and could look to make her mark with her own hire.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out this year. If he starts on the hot seat, and does poorly, he may get canned, but not until he ruins another recruiting class. If gets another non-losing season and they can him anyway it would be a really bad look. Also not sure where you get Majority of UVA fans. Alumni I know are still hopefully on board - he helped them turn the culture around, will get his guys. They had the guy recruiting top players, and canned him for culture, coaching, losing. You really think little excitement around Football is a problem at UVA? Really agree new AD is the wild card I know nothing about.

Yeah. It's really bleak. Makes me so sad.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Not to mention letting Ruffin McNeill get away. He had our number and he was a really solid recruiter.

They should have made him their HC. I would've respected that.

Not according to one of the posters on the Sabre -- he has them going 8-4, LOL. He did pick them to lose to us, so at least he is somewhat realistic.

I think he meant 4-8...

If they average 35 points a game...

I mean, if we go based on the last VT-UVa game, he could be right on them trending up.

They scored 0 against us and only crossed midfield once. Hard to not trend upwards from that

What people dont realize was Josh Jackson was playing with a broken foot for the latter half of the season. I dont remember the exact game he went down. googling, googling. found it: link so the dude was playing with a broken foot for all of November at least. His game was noticeably off for that month. I think he deserves honorary Brewer status* for playing through it.

*Brewer status is awarded to a player who is an absolute fucking juggernaut and repeatedly takes punishment on the field and keeps getting back up.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

He definitely looked hurt throughout the last half of the season, this makes a lot of sense. Can't believe he was able to do that and we still won games. Already respected the guy but this takes it to a whole other level!

Sprained throwing shoulder too

I look forward to the day we have good enough backup QBs that when the starter breaks his foot he can sit on the bench and heal up.

So... this upcoming season?

Does he play with Brandon Smith?

Yes Malik Bell and Brandon Smith are teammates in football and basketball. I can't believe Brandon is a junior he is a monster.

Anyone know anything about our progress with Akok Akok? I know he's been mentioned before when we offered him a scholly, but nothing since.

Not sure what the connection is, except they're both from the NE, but Bede is constantly liking/retweeting stuff about this kid. Would love to see him in M&O

Not sure where we stand, so this post may be aimless, but I'd love to see that kind of natural length on the floor. Was hoping he was taller than 6'8", but I'd be interested to see him matchup on someone his size to find out if he plays bigger than he is. Shot blocking/disruption near the hoop (w/o fouling) can't be understated as a need of ours

Kinda hurts to see UNC above us in rankings. Is it because of how low our long snapper is?

No. It's based on points not average recruit ranking. Having the longsnapper only helps. UNC just has a pair of very highly rated 4*s

Recruit Prosim

Frankly, I'd rather have a higher average among all our players than a lower average that's brought up with a couple of really strong players, unless one of those is a strong players is a quarterback.

Mostly because some players wash out, and some turn out better than expected. We had a fair number of 4 stars that didn't really help our team much. At a granular level, the numbers don't really matter, what matters is the overall quality of players, and filling positions of need.

The annoying bit about UNC is that they didn't get any meaningful repercussion from their cheatin' ways.

So a higher median? Or lower standard deviation? It's been awhile since I took stats in the Ag Quad.

I think we've got both of those going on with this class, and that's a good thing.

It hurts and helps. In normal years, we wouldn't have given a scholly to a Long Snapper and would have probably gotten another Avg. Ranking recruit at .87 which would have pushed out class above UNC and Nebraska. Or if they rated the #1 LS in the nation at a .87 ranking, that would have done the same thing.

It also makes absolutely zero sense. We are rated higher in every single service the composite uses. Rivals, ESPN, and 247 have us ranked ahead of them. How we finished behind them in the composite, I have absolutely no clue.

You're right. I just don't understand how the team composite works. I don't think anyone does lol

I bet he has some football coaches talking to the team, motivational speaker style. I haven't seen anything from Buzzketball involving football coaches lately, but maybe someone is coming to practice for a meeting later this week?

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Thought we were expecting a second commit this past weekend? Or maybe I just misread a post above while drunk Saturday.

Guess I'm not TKP'ing hard enough because I haven't seen much about BB recruiting lately. Except that post about Akok.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I thought it was another football commitment. Not BB.

There is another one in the boat that I thought would be coming on Saturday, Not sure what the hold up for announcing it is though.

New commit Friday threw things off (would be my guess)

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

LA, we talking a BB or FB commit? I'm just trying to get a feel for what Buzz is referring to in the tweet.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

FB. Don't really know anyone around the b-ball program.

I'm anxious for some basketball news too. After all those decommits at the same time a few months ago, the blank slate has me dreaming

You AND me, I went to 247 recently hoping that I wasn't TKP'ing hard enough and there were some 2019 commits that Buzz had pulled in. Nothing. I trust Buzz, just hoping his desire to clean the slate and go after bigger fish hasn't backfired.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I think we're just getting a little ahead of ourselves haha. I just looked back and realized Nolley and Kabongo didn't commit until October of last year anyway. Also, it looks like there are still only 25 teams in the country with any 2019 commits at all

I don't think anything's backfiring quite yet, but I'm afraid it's gonna be quiet for a while longer and we're just gonna have to keep waiting. I guess I just have to settle for anticipating when our 2018 guys start putting out their Senior year mixtapes

Thanks for walking me back from the ledge. Didn't realize commits in BB wait that long. I mean signing day for BB is in November, no? But to reiterate my earlier point, I trust Buzz, and will do so till he proves me wrong for doing so.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

According to this, the 2018 date isn't even until this May, and looking at 247, there are still about 5-10 guys in the top 100 uncommitted. I feel like it's just more common in basketball for kids to officially sign NLIs before the actual signing day. Obviously these are all assumptions though, and I would welcome anyone with any real knowledge to correct me

Basketball has an early signing period in November of the previous year. Our 2018 class all signed in November 2017.

I figured that was the case. So I figure we'll hear more and more about new 2019 croots as we approach the fall.

One is from a PSU insider and PSU is the school with all other CBs for him. Could he be the mystery commit?

Y'know what's fun? I don't think he's the mystery commit.

I concur

Not to be that guy but it looks like PSU is still the favorite... Also, no indication this guy is committing soon. It is great to have our foot solidly in the door though.

VT is also the only team listed as "Warm" and I'd say multiple recent predictions to VT are more meaningful than PSU predictions that were made almost 3 years before his signing day.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Yea my thought that PSU is still the favorite is based on the reports that he has visited Happy Valley multiple times a year for the last 3+ years... From the little reading I've done it looks like his relationship there is similar to the relationship Dax has with us. I don't give the CBs or our "warm" status much consideration since there is no indication he is close to committing. If he had tweeted that his decision is coming soon, I would be pumped.

Hopefully PSU is slow playing what they view as a sure thing and we pull him away but I am not holding my breath.

According to the PSU guys, that's exactly what's happening. Apparently he's dropped down their board, which I'm perfectly happy with.

Really hoping we land this guy, good coverage skills, total ballhawk.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

A lot of CBs the past couple days with most coming from Bud Elliot. Of those not mentioned yet above, Tayvion Robinson got yet another one for the good guys, Smiley got one for UVA (I know I saw rumors about him cooling on us) and Derrian Brown got another for Auburn. I know its not likely we snag him considering how hard we're going after Ford but that duo is just too enticing not to dream about.

The rumor is that we're cooling on Smiley but I'm not sure how much I buy that. We're in desperate need of DT's this cycle and we have one that is in our own backyard, has multiple big time offers, and grew up a massive hokie fan. Why would we pass on him?

Wait, this is strange...LA, we come to you for answers, not questions...set the record straight!!

Also, as far as the comment above about having Ford and Brown together, I would be even more excited about having Ford and Houston. Houston is only rated a high 3 star, but I think his film is so fun to watch. Ford plays right away, Houston redshirts, then we get Tyree the following year and redshirt him. That's 3 amazing backs each a year apart, I think that could rival the Evans, Williams, Wilson era for RBs at Tech.

Well at least you aren't setting yourself up for disappointment.....

I love Houston. I don't think he's a true rb though. To me he's more of a get him the ball in space kind of guy. Line him up in the slot for short routes and sweeps, motion him into the backfield, etc. Dynamic with the ball in his hands.

I feel the same way. Smiley is trying to play us as the jealous girlfriend right now. No reason this guy isnt a take.

Why? We have already offered, it's not like he is Elijah Davis and he is waiting for us to offer

Because we are dealing with teenagers who have major amounts of attention on them when they are usually not ready for it to act like a sensible adult 24-7??

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

He's just catfishing loluva

Hokie fan | W&M grad

Can someone explain what exactly the knock is against Elijah Davis He looks quick, good misdirection, decent size. What am I missing? 4.5 speed isn't elite, but he doesn't get caught from behind on highlights anyway. My guess is level of competition????

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

My take is this:
He's good, but not great. Tech has a stable of good, but not great backs. Tech took a huge class this year, and is looking at having to take a smaller class next year. Were he a great back, that works in our system, he'd be a take. If he isn't everything we want, then we need that spot for someone who is what we want.
I hope Tech's days of taking people just to fill spots are nearing an end. We need to be taking people we really want, not taking who we can get.

I like this and agree 99%, but there is something to be said about taking someone who has a burning desire to play for your program.

Recruit Prosim

I agree with your burning desire part, look at what Baker Mayfield did

I had a burning "desire" once... Thankfully, after a few weeks of antibiotics it was back to normal.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

There is something to be said about guys having a "burning desire to play for your program", but that shouldn't be a determining factor if the coaches think he isn't good enough.

If someone wants to play for your program enough to be a walk-on if you don't think they merit a scholarship, you let them. If they don't want to play for you enough to do that, maybe "burning desire" is too strong a term.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

If he wants it bad enough, he can always seek a preferred walk-on status then go the Sam Rogers or Peoples route and earn his scholarship. It would be a huge gamble for him but he could always transfer if it did not work out.

I love Tech as we all do, but you can whole heartedly want to go somewhere and not be able to because of the financial implications. Any of these recruits who have the ability to get a scholarship elsewhere should take that route unless they planned on playing school as plan A. The financial burden of tuition to try and earn a scholarship isn't a choice we should encourage to young adults

Recruit Prosim

I have seen 4.6 40 for him and don't believe that at all. There is a reason his best offer was odu and some local fcs teams. He isn't good enough for power 5 football even UVA didn't extend an offer to him. I watched him in the state championship game and he was getting run down from behind by multiple players. He is barely ranked as a 3*. It wasn't lack of competition he was still playing 3a football he just isn't good enough. It sucks because he definitely wanted to come here and he seems like a great kid who works hard.

It's been eerily quiet on the B.B. recruiting this season I'm a bit concerned if this is good or bad news we badly need a good PG in particular

Unofficial Landers Nolley score keeper

All of our 2018 class signed in the early period. Looks to be a pretty good class tbh. Landers Nolley is gonna be a stud, he's been lighting it up for HS/AAU and will probably be one of the best pure scorers on our roster when he walks in. Jon Kabongo is not one I heard much about (read he was injured for some time his junior year), but looks like he'll be good PG depth. Jarren McAllister is in the mold of a Buzz OKG, can't have too many of the people that fit your roster plan well.

We don't really need a good PG past what we have + Kabongo. Wabissa Bede is only a freshman that hasn't gotten much run (which is understandable with how JRob has been playing in ACC play), but his potential to perform in the future and take over for Robinson gives me some form of excitement. Honestly, the biggest need of this class was probably a post, but with Sy re-enrolling and redshirting the remainder of this season, that need was alleviated.

In regards to 2019, all of our class practically de-committed for whatever reason; we probably won't hear much about 2019 recruiting until closer to December of this year (early signing day, but practically all BB recruits sign on this day). There are a ton of names out there right now that we are chasing but it remains to be seen where we will end up with this class.

Our 2019 class "de-committed" lol I think it could've been a little shadier. Probably a mutual thing but I'm sure Buzz definitely realized he didn't want that entire class to be those players and saw better targets he had a shot at.

Also, as to why it's slow, I think like you said it's still really early, but also basketball recruiting doesn't seem to have the same following as football. So while we see so much news on football, mainly because there are soooo many targets per class, basketball only has a few targets and is not talked about as much as a result.
