Buzzketball heads into Cameron Arena on a high note, after knocking off #1 Virginina, 61-60, in their last game out. The Hokies have to come out steady offensively against the Blue Devils, definitely avoiding Duke jumping out to a big early lead. This will be a tough test, especially with the size of the Blue Devil roster if Coach K brings it to bear. Duke sports eight players 6'7 or taller. That said, this season Coach K is only playing his starters and does not have a deep bench. Beyond the starting five there are only enough minutes for others to get on the floor about 45 total minutes per contest.

This game is always a sellout at Cameron which is a positive for how this team feeds on the energy of a building. This team could really use a solid crowd to help it bounce back if Duke manages to get out to a lead. Duke comes in having only lost five contests, including three of their last five games out. All but one of their losses have come in the ACC schedule, losing to Boston College, NC State, UVA, UNC and a weird non-conference game to St Johns in the middle of conference play. They have wins Michigan State, Texas, Florida, and Indiana in their OOC slate. They also have beaten Florida State, Pitt twice, Wake Forest twice, Miami, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. They are coming in after beating up the Yellow Jackets 80-69 on the road.

This will be the fifty fifth meeting between the Hokies and Blue Devils. Duke leads the all-time series 45-9, starting all the way back in 1912. The Hokies last victory against the Blue Devils came last season as the Hokies throttled the #5 Blue Devils 89-75 in Blacksburg.

The Blue Devils are coached by Mike Krzyzewski, who has coached Duke to a 1018-276 career record, an almost 79% winning percentage. In the 37 years that Coach K has been at the helm, Duke has only managed to not make the NCAA tournament four times, and barring the year he had surgery, and relinquished the helm in 1995, it was only his first three years as head coach that they didn't make it.
One thing to keep in mind when facing Duke is a Coach K mantra, "A winning basketball team makes the opponent react to them, whether they are on offense or defense"

This team is full of stars, but not stars that have necessarily learned to play well together yet. There are four freshmen in the starting lineup alongside Grayson Allen. All five starters average in double figure scoring, with two at or close to a double-double a night in Bagley and Carter. Bagley may have to sit this game out with an injury. Reports are indicating he will not play.

Defensively, the Blue Devils employ a high pressure attacking defense that varies its form and style based on opponents. This season it seems a two three zone with three guards harassing the perimeter ball handler by shifting into passing lanes and making it difficult to get a clean shot or pass the ball. A couple other tenets of a Coach K defense are that his defenses involve getting all five players to play together: talking on defense, seeing the ball, and moving as the ball moves. He expects all five guys to play for the charge as a standard. He also coaches his team that defense continues until the ball is in Duke hands.

Offensively, Duke usually runs a three out, two in Motion offense, which involves the perimeter players looking for bigs at the free throw line to create space, open up driving lanes, or allowing for kickout shots from the corner. The Blue Devils excel at moving without the ball so they are in the right spot to take advantage of a defensive miscue. Duke isn't exactly the fastest paced offense so the Hokies should look to speed them up if they can.

What does that mean for the Hokies?

First off, Hats off to J-Rob, #5, Justin Robinson for being named the Citizen's Naismith Player of the Week last week.

The Hokies need to come out realizing they have an advantage in terms of playing team basketball. One thing pointed out about the Blue Devils is that they have played more like individuals in their recent losses than as a coherent group. That said, when these stars align, the Blue Devils are ACC basketball at its best so Tech needs to be prepared to force the pace of this game. Duke is not exactly burning the nets down this season so far, shooting only 39% from behind the arc and 50% from the field total. The Hokies need to try to protect the paint and make Duke earn it hitting jump shots or long range bombs.

This should be a high paced game if the Hokies want to have a chance to win. They need to run the legs off the Duke bigs. They cannot afford a letdown like they had against Miami either, as Duke will put them in a much deeper hole than the Hurricanes. Duke will outsize the Hokies at only one or two of the five spots on the floor for a majority of the game. As we have seen multiple times this season, Tech has the ability to open up a significant lead on a team if they come out fast.

The Blue Devils unlike most other seasons have relied on the perimeter shot much more this season. They much prefer to work the ball inside but are averaging over 22 attempts from outside a contest. The two keys for Tech here is that Blackshear and Nickiel Alexander-Walker have to stay out of early foul trouble and Tech needs to have hands up in a more collapsing style defense today.

The Blue Devils heavily rely on their starting five, three of whom play thirty three or more minutes per contest, two others that are at or above 27 minutes per contest. Tech must find a way to get to the line early and often, hitting their free throws while also getting their opponent in early foul trouble so they are forced to dig into their less prepared bench. This could be an even more prominent part of the game if Bagley sits out like is being reported.

Blue Devils Backcourt

Freshmen Gary Trent Jr, (#2) 6'6, 209 Lbs, Guard, comes in second on the Blue Devils in scoring, putting up 15.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.2 SPG. He is the one of two of Dukes top five scorers that is averaging over 40% from outside at 45%, he also is shooting 42% from the field and is shooting 87% from the line.

Grayson Allen, (#3) 6'4, 195 Lbs, who was averaging 14.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.6 APG, all while shooting 85% so far from the line. He is shooting 37% from outside and 50% from inside this season. Allen will look to dribble penetrate much like Justin Robinson to do much of his scoring.

Freshman Trevon Duvall, (#1) 6'3, 186 Lbs is averaging 11.1 PPG, 2 RPG, and 5.7 APG. Duvall comes in shooting 51% from the inside, 27% from behind the line and 60% from the line. He has successfully run the point for the Blue Devils most of the season.

Alex O'Connell, (#15) 6'6, 171 Lbs is the next freshmen up in this rotation and is averaging 4.6 PPG and 1.7 RPG. He has been averaging 12 minutes per contest but ended up playing 22 against Georgia Tech with Bagley sitting out.

Blue Devils Frontcourt

Freshman Forward Marvin Bagley III, #35, 6'11, 234 lbs is the leading scorer for Duke. Bagley is putting up 21.2 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1 SPG and 1.1 BPG. He is shooting 64% inside, 35% outside and 62% from the free throw line. If he misses tonight's game that is a big piece of their offense sitting on the bench.

Freshman Wendell Carter Jr, #34, 6'10, 259 lbs this season is averaging almost a double-double with 14.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.8 APG, and 2.2 BPG while shooting 63% from the inside and a scary 47% from outside while also hitting 70% of his free throws. Hard to say that someone has had a bigger impact than Bagley but Carter definitely can make the argument, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

With Bagley out, expect to see quite a bit of Sophomores Marques Bolden (#20) and Javin Delaurier (#12). Bolden is 6'11, 245 Lbs and DeLaurier is 6' 10, 220 Lbs. They had been combining for 7.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.2 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 1.6 BPG over about 23 mpg. Against Georgia Tech these two saw 43 minutes of floor time, put up 11 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block.

What to expect from Duke?

The Blue Devils play predominantly a half court high pressure defense in either man to man or zone geared towards making opponents make mistakes. Their goal is to take the ball away any way possible, limiting the number of shots that an opponent takes to instantly give them an advantage on the other end. Relentless attack on the ballhandlers so that they move from defense to offense.

Expect to see a team that is just not touching into all of its potential but also dealing with the injury to Bagley. This might actually backfire on the Hokies somewhat as Bagley being a freewheeling component of this team has been widely reported this year and has been a point of emphasis in several of their losses.

The Blue Devils are the number one scoring offense in the country, averaging 88.8 PPG and only allowing opponents 72.6 PPG. That's a 16 point average margin of victory so far this season. There are a few extreme blowouts that contribute to that but for the most part Duke has won by double digits in almost all its games. Why is this important? With the number of freshman on this squad and Bagley out, if Tech can make this a close contest its not something Duke has had to deal with much and could work in the Hokies favor. Duke has been less than double digits in a win five times this season, a seven point win over Michigan State, a seven point win over Texas, a three point win over Florida, a seven point win over Florida State and a eight point win over Miami. In their five losses, only one was double digits. That means that in games decided by ten points or less, Duke is 5-4 this season.

Rebounding wise, the Blue Devils may be a nightmare scenario for Tech but so far this season they only average the second most rebounds in the country at 42.6 rebounds per night. Part of the explanation though is that they don't miss as often as other teams so there are not rebounds to be had. Duke comes in as a team shooting 56% from inside the arc.

Duke is fairly average when it comes to fouling opponents, giving up about 16.76 personal fouls per game with only Carter and Duvall consistently in foul trouble at 2.9 and 2.8 per game respectively. Hopefully the Hokies ability to speed up the game and stretch the opponent will lead to a few more opportunities as they force defenders to reach.

The Hokies

Tech needs to be ready to keep a high paced tempo the entire game without letting up if they want to win this matchup. They have to be able to get a high number of transition baskets while forcing Duke out of its comfort zone in methodically attacking the ball. Essentially force Duke to deal with their own medicine when they are on offense. Duke has been averaging more than 12 turnovers per game in ACC play.

Tech will have a tough time winning the lane so it has to be able to hit its jumpers, especially critical is hitting its perimeter shots. Tech likely needs to shoot better than 50% from outside to be a factor in this game.

This may seem counterintuitive but they still need to Pound the Paint, as both Robinson and Blackshear need to play a major role in this game. Getting the ball inside and forcing Duke's bigs to adjust to the Hokies challenging them inside. Clarke should also play a major factor in possibly getting the Blue Devils in some foul trouble. One thing to remember though is that Duke is averaging 5.48 blocks per game as a team so the Hokies need to make sure that they get quality looks at the basket.

Highlight of the UVA Game

Just looking at the box score you would say Justin Robinson, but I give the nod to Nickiel Walker-Alexander in this one. The freshman stepped up and hit key shots when they were needed most.

In Closing

We need to see a game much like last season, where Duke didn't have a chance to catch their breath. All the arguments of talent and size go out the window when you are a step behind your opponent all night. The Hokies have speed and athleticism that Duke could only match

The Hokies have to work the ball to the open man and hit those shots when they get them. One of the main reasons that Duke has won by such big margins this season is that they have kept opponents shooting percentage down to about 40% from the floor. That gives them almost a 10% edge compared to how Duke has done on the offensive end and that's barring making opponents make other mistakes with the ball before they even manage to get shots off. One positive is the opponents have managed to outshoot Duke this season by about two shots per contest so they are not like UVA who holds you to a low percentage and limits your shot totals on top of that.

I expect to see Buzz stretch the floor, especially on defense with Bagley out. They will try to attack Duke before they even manage to get across half court so they are able to limit Duke's time to set up offensive plays but also hope to create transition baskets or foul line opportunities.

I expect with the injury to Bagley that this game will be much closer than most would expect, which should work in the Hokies favor. Keep the game from reaching blow out status and close out a win in the final few minutes. Hokies win 88-84.

Tech likely needs to shoot better than 50% from outside to be a factor in this game

they still need to Pound the Paint

The way Buzz emphasizes "Paint Touches" before a 3 pointer, I think the combination of the above 2 quotes gets used a lot tonight in the half court. Its the way VT plays anyway (so we know ourselves) and it allows us to get their bigs to collapse in dealing with Clarke, Robinson, and KJ as the ball enters the lane and post and then the ball gets kicked out to an open shooter as Duke's D collapses. If we hit those shots, we win.

Just had the chance to check your profile and I saw Giles county. Let me tell you, the bus ride to Giles from Martinsville is rough man, lord have mercy. And also, I was at those loluva-Tech baseball games. My best friend was a uva fan and we made the trip up to see those games because he was talking all sorts of trash. Those games were 👌🏼.

As a hoo that's one of the few sports he could look forward to (excluding lacrosse and wine tasting) and to see the disappointing look, especially as the #1 team was beautiful. And they were all one run so the heartbreak was strong. That entire season was a roller coaster tho.

I know it was crazy and made us co-National champs 😂 I can't lie, I was a little skeptical when the hire was announced. I think Whit has just spoiled me with Home run hires (no pun intended) I'm really excited for opening day tho. I know it will take a while to get "his guys" but he seems like an old school coach which bodes well in my eyes.

Hopefully as the facilities are completed those will just be more recruiting tools so he can continue to do so. Opening up with Coastal Carolina and a ranked South Alabama team will definitely put the team to the test early though. I'm just hoping to make it to Blacksburg for a few games this year, especially when Spring weather comes around.

It definitely sucks that both UNC and UVA are on the road but we do have the dookies, along with NC State at home which should be good. Too many missed opportunities. We can do that against the Pitts of the world. Not At Duke. Hoping for some serious mean regression on layup %

Great passing but these misses are killing us

VB born, class of '14

They do not look better than us. We need to make shots. We cannot leave their shooters to help. If do both we win. Either it's close, neither and it gets away. Defensive rebounding would help.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Those missed layups and JROB picking up two fouls are both really hurting right about now.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 3 point defense and defensive rebounding need to improve.

Can we finish a half without playing sloppy

Our problems are correctable. Make our open shots and don't give them second chance points.

That was some good Hokie defense on dukes last possession.

Overall proud of that half. Dook is making contested shots, not much you can do about that. Rebounding is what it is. Bigger issue is definitely finishing shots and getting to the foul line. This should be a good finish, hopefully we sneak of of Cameron with a dub and CC teabags Grayson Allen.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

seems we've missed several layups. have we been fouled on any? duke has had one, yes count 'em, one foul called against them the entire first half. the Hokies... five.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

Blackshear was definitely fouled when they called a jump ball. I thought Clarke was fouled twice on layup attempts. Still shouldn't have missed like 5 of them though.

Honestly I didn't see any egregious calls either way. Refs just letting em play. Sucks 5 got 2 early. Hope he comes out with some 🔥

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Is it me or does Grayson Allen have an extremely punchable face?

If Robinson only plays 5 minutes it kinda defeats the purpose of trying to keep him out of foul trouble. I'd rather him foul out than just sit him the whole game because he's in foul trouble

Edit: didn't mean to reply to this

Only able to watch a bit of the first half. From what I gather they are making threes and we aren't. Difference in game.

At the time of your post we were 5 of 10 on 3 pointers so thankfully we're shooting well from distance. Buzz mentioned at halftime that giving up rebounds was the difference. As other posters have pointed out, we've missed some layups as well.

Ok yeah I think the last stat I was able to see was us 3-6 and duke 7-15 on threes

I haven't seen one duke player beat KJ one on one in the post. Why do we keep sagging off shooters for a half ass double?? Stay with your man

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

I love Devin and he's been critical the last few games but in a game like this you have to think it's more important to spread that zone out and get shooters and scorers onto the floor especially with Robinson in foul trouble. They aren't even stepping out of the paint when Wilson catches it on the wing.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

This. He has to make himself some what of a scoring threat. At least hard dribble and make the zone move. Standing and passing just plays into Dooks hand.

We're giving this game away. Dook is not an impressive team they're just not making stupid mistakes like we are. We're not playing well but we're still solidly in this game.

pig and bede will drive it to the hoop

Get Bibbs in the middle of that zone and Ahmed outside. I love what Devin has done for us the past couple of games, but this is not his game to be in

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Might need to switch to a running game.

Carter travels every time he does that spin move in the post. Picks up his pivot prior to putting the ball on the floor. That said, KJ is doing a very good job on him tonight. Haven't understood why we keep sending a sort-of double team to him. Just leaves shooters wide open and gets us running away from the basket when we need everyone we can to chip in rebounding.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."

This feels like an extremely winnable and important game that we are just giving away.

Wait what happened?? ESPN too focused on Jay Williams to know what just happened in the game. Did CC pick up the foul?!

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

The home cooking by the refs really heating up here...not that duke needs it at this point

Also let bibbs shot every shot

Stop helping off the 3 point shooters. Please. Just one time. See what happens.

I didn't expect to beat Duke tonight but this is just an embarrassing effort.

And we still continue to leave the shooter.

Devin Wilson has one job - stay in Allen's face - and he keeps running away from him. Get him out of the game and put in another scorer. His "defense" isn't doing us any good when his man keeps hitting the uncontested three.

Someone needs to get Grayson Allen irritated.

We put the K in Kwality

Or we could just throw the ball out of bounds.

We put the K in Kwality

5 playing like he has the flu. Rest of the guys playing like they think they can't win 5 not feelin' it.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

We're just playing flat footed. No energy.

We put the K in Kwality

The lack of Justin Robinson for large stretches of this game really kept us off balance offensively. He truly is the engine of this team. Defensively though, man. I'm just not sure what our game plan was but leaving a good shooting team open for wide open 3 after wide open 3 was not a good game plan. Had to know we would struggle on the glass but we just didn't show a lot of effort tonight. Deflating loss after what we showed we were capable of defensively against LOLuva. All that being said, this is the absolute worst offensive performance I've seen us have in quite some time. Throwing the ball away on breaks, missing just wide open looks and uncontested layups, driving to the hoop tentatively and turning it over.

Embarrassing loss. I really thought this team could pull it out tonight. The effort really seemed to decline as the half wore on. We got domainated on the boards, which was somewhat expected, but it seemed the efforts wasn't even there like we just assumed we would lose the rebounding game and didn't even try. This team goes and Robinson goes. Someone else needs to step up and start trying to take control if he's struggling or sidelined with foul trouble. It's frustrating to watch knowing how good this team can be. Once again, we gave up a ton of second chance points - 18. Maybe not the difference in the game but still a huge problem.

NASCAR??

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Absolutely pitiful by our guys tonight. No energy, stupid mistakes. What a wasted opportunity.

Tonight we looked like an 11 seed AT BEST, rough outing, on to the next one.

Definitely not a tourney team on that performance gotta do better in the next few games especially at home

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

My hope is that this doesn't deflate as as we are going into a huge stretch where the chance for big and much needed wins is huge.

Well, that was sub-optimal. On to the next one, plenty of opportunities for much-needed big wins down the stretch.

There is zero rhyme or reason to which VT team will show up; the one that fights for everything to make up for their deficiencies or the one that does little to nothing with any effort at all as soon as the ball is tipped (like we saw tonight). I wish there was so I could set my emotions accordingly.

The team played like they had to push the bus to Durham. Lead feet and motions great defense and then giving up the rebounds and big second chance points.

Wow... this team could not be more schizophrenic.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Just another example of this team coming out flat footed defensively and giving up several open 3s to let the other team get into a rhythm. Once they've found their rhythm, even the contested ones seem open. At halftime when Buzz said that he would live with them taking contested 3s, I was concerned for that very reason. Against UVA, Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome had someone in their face from the tip-off throwing off their rhythm for the entire 45 minutes. If they aren't going to play an entire 40 minutes defensively, it's important that they at least play the first 10 minutes with as much intensity as possibly to throw off the other team for the entirety of the game.

Also, I could bitch about defensive rebounding for like 10 sentences, but if Buzz really doesn't think he needs more than 1 (2 when Sy comes back) true big man in the rotation, then whatever. We'll continue to watch them get out rebounded by 20 against teams with size and athleticism.

I know the effort was poor tonight, but I'm really just hoping they were still tired from travelling to Charlottesville and giving everything they had. I think we'll be okay.

We lost a classic trap game. Got way up to play the 1st place team in ACC, who happened to be a rival. Played our hearts out emotionally and physically to get the best win of the season (so far) in OT. That took us to three in a row, and likely into the tourney. Hard to get up for the next one. Especially when they are without a featured player, and play nothing like the scouting report because of it. We were on short rest, without much time to focus and revise our game plan. Add in that every player that played for their team was more hotly recruited than anyone on ours. And then they are at home, with all the typical ACC home field advantages. The score was bad, the loss was not. We missed good looks, they hit bad ones, and the ball bounced their way. We can play a lot better. We could have played much better and still lost. Really hard for me to be down on the team for losing a regular season ACC game at Cameron, even when we looked bad doing it.

Not sure you can ever call playing Duke in basketball a "trap game." Trap games require that you are expected to beat the opponent (see: Syracuse football in 2016 or ECU in 2014).

Based on some of the comments on here you would think we were expected to win. Not saying you are wrong, but that we did not have the type of focus going in you need to beat a top team on the road because of where it fell in the schedule, how hard we have been playing, combined with Bagley out. We did not play like giant slayers, and did not bring our A game. Short turn around after UVA upset was likely a factor. Bagley out may have worked against us. I felt like we played like it was trap game even though they are better than us by any metric.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I agree that Bagley being out worked against us in two ways. I think the team probably took an audible sigh of relief to not be facing the premier frontcourt talent in the country this season. Secondly, for Duke, much of this season they have been criticized for playing like a bunch of individual talents forced to be on the court together, especially in their losses. In this game, much like the Wizards without John Wall, I think they played their best team basketball of the season with a much more balanced inside-outside attack on offense and defensively they were also better balanced against individual opponents with only Carter down low.
