The $10,000 half-court shot dropped last night, and I'm curious what "college-you" would have spent the money on?
Here it is. $10,000 to a student. #Hokies pic.twitter.com/zghigAXk9R— Henry Skutt (@henryskutt) February 22, 2018

Netflix stock! Don't you watch Buzz's #getBetter Timeouts?
Do we really need to ask?
That's a lotttt of rails.
It's 4, cause after 4, you're dead.
Challenge accepted. I'm also 6'4" 300+ so 4 is kinda a warm up.
Buddy of mine did six over the course of a day once...
Beat me by 2 minutes! Was just coming here to post that gif
Dude you just gotta TKP harder!/s For real though, I'm surprised no one said it sooner. It was the first thing this thread made me think of.
Only need about $750 to your name while in college to make that a reality..
Or play basketball for Louisville. Although in that situation why stop at 2.
Actually probably just a lotttttt of rails, but slightly older slightly smarter me wants that ^
"College me"
Alcohol, girls, video games, stuff for my truck , credit card bills.
I build a kegarator in college for < $250. You don't need $10k for that.
Then the remainder is for....KEGS!!!
Gibson ES-175, alcohol, girls (in that order)
A couple computers dedicated to mining Bitcoin. The rest I would have put into a down payment on a condo so that the next 10 years worth of rent payments would have gone towards principle on a mortgage rather than a landlord's pocket.
(I know Bitcoin came into existence in 2009, which was a couple years after my time in Blacksburg, but the only thing really stopping me back then was money. I just didn't have any)
The question was what would college-student-you have spent the money on, not responsible-adult-you. Care to revise your answer?
That's the silly thing, I know college me, and I would have seriously done that. I didn't exactly party it up until my junior and senior years when I could legally drink. By that point, I had a part time job that I had fun doing that funded all my partying efforts, so its not like I would have needed the money to go toward fun.
Another thing is that my parents hammered home the importance of saving money from an early, early age. To this day, I have serious buyers remorse even when I buy a new TV.
A better car for my then-fiancée (now-wife).
Your wife must read your TKP comments. Nicely played.
We can see why she married him.
Incidentally, I did actually buy her a car for her birthday 2 years ago. We moved on up. :)
She might end up mad at me for this year's birthday present though, but we'll see.
You're not far off. REALLY not far off. lol
She's due in August, and the official due date is three days after her birthday.
I keep my comments mostly PG for that very reason. Never know who's watching. lol
wholesome
That's how I do it.
If I knew then, what I knew then: Johnny, you have just won, A NEW CAR! (Well, new to you...)
If I knew then, what I know now: any FANG stock, maybe about a year after they were listed.
A much nicer engagement ring for my now wife.
What is happening to this thread?
Rails for all of TOTS
Ten grand would have just about paid for a lot at Corolla in those days. Damn.
Edit: This is what my mother kept trying to get me to do while I was in the Army between stints at VT. I seriously considered it enough to believe that I may have done just that with a 10K booster, even as a dick in the dirt poor hippie trying to get the degree courtesy of the GI Bill.
A West Coast Grateful Dead tour, most likely.
Hear, Hear. Exactly. And assuming it was sophomore-in-college-me, it would have been the ultra nice '89 tour. Could've started in Greensboro in March (Was at the Saturday show there in real life, actually) would've included the Hampton Coliseum two night tilt, and then wrapped it up with the New Year's Eve show in Oakland.
Goddamn, what memories I could've had. You guys would be looking at a different Leonard.
I went to all the ones you named, actually. Did the whole '90 Summer Tour. But the Oakland '89 new years shows were the only ones west of KC/Chicago. Knowing myself in college, I would have taken at least a semester off to hit Shoreline, RedRocks, and any other SW venues.
My dumbass would've probably bought a Harley. Instead I waited until a few months after I graduated and bought a Harley. (Don't get me wrong, I love it, but...yeah.)
well considering i totalled my paychecks in "how many doubles could I get at hokie house with this?" i think the answer is pretty clear
So is it rails at TOTS or something for your wife?
A lot of people were either really mature college kids or y'all a bunch of damn liars.
When we were finishing up power school to move up to NY for prototype we got moving bonuses. I think it was something like $1500.
Made for one hell of a party at the Southern Belle.
People aren't speaking that dam truth
If I knew then what I know now?
* probably set the first $4,000 aside for taxes
* put the rest toward tuition and books (about a year's worth of in-state tuition in 1994) OR put it in a good growth stock mutual fund since I didn't end up graduating anyway
The actual 17-year old me?
* probably still set aside the first $4000 for taxes
* spend some on tuition and books
* spend the rest on M:tG, WH40K and gaming in general
40k you say?
40% is a bit much for taxes. As a college student your net tax rate is going to be at like 15% max.
but yes.. college me would have also dropped at least 2-3,000 on some sweet tabletop armies
Winnings tax is a whole different thing than your normal income tax. $4K might be low...
no, it's not. prizing winnings are considered ordinary income. People get the 40% number in their heads thinking about powerball, where almost the entire $200 million payout would be taxed in the top state & federal brackets.
Also might be thinking of bonuses at work getting withheld at a high rate... They're intentionally over-withheld because the IRS wants to err on the side of getting paid. They'd much rather issue large refunds than having a bunch of people suddenly realizing they owe a few thousand extra at tax time and scrambling to pay.
A new drum set, some customizations for my truck, and an M1 Garand.
This guy. I like this guy.
My favorite rifle to shoot.
Got mine through the CMP for $395 for my 21st birthday. They wayyyyyy overstated the defects. Do recommend.
College me would probably put the money into a new truck. College me was kind of a dolt.
Nah. You need a reliable, functional vehicle, especially starting out into the world.
Probably alcohol and firearms
No tobacco?
Or explosives?
This guy as well.
College me would have went to party with the tri-delt's, they were the very hawt, fun and easy sorority 20 years ago, not sure if that is still the case...
"Tri Delts"
Everyone else has.
Exactly
Max out my Roth IRA for that year then buy everyone a round at TOTS then save the rest.
You had a Roth IRA in college?
Wowza.
My parents set me up with one when I started middle school. I still remember the day my dad made me go with him to the charles schwab building to set it up, I had no idea what was going on. They're very old school.
Roth didn't exist when I was in College, but I would have joined the crowd in saving for taxes and investing.
NCAA tourney tickets and then a baller spring break trip. I would put the remaining 4K into savings.
Crypto currency 5 years ago
college me? are you joking? what wouldn't college me buy with $10,000
The same thing not college me would drop $10k on, Vegas Baby!
I had a MKIII GTI VR6 that I loved back then. College me would have dumped 10k into making that car faster than it rightfully should have been without hesitation.
Taxes and student loans at the recommendation of my parents most likely. Probably take about 1 grand to splurge on fencing gear and odds and ends for myself though. My gear in college was pretty shit.
Fishing and hunting gear and/or trips. Camera gear. A truck. Alcohol.
Same shit I've wasted $10,000 x 10 on since college. Probably.
I'm with Wild Turkey. Probably would have spent some on fishing gear and more on trips to destination spots. If I was being somewhat responsible invest it to buy a truck and boat.
Tuition. Food. Beer. Truck. Not necessarily in that order, though.
Oh, yeah, my own hotel room in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl game against FSU. Cramming 8 people in a room with one queen bed was sub-optimal, to say the least.
Hookers and blow.
$10,000 of blow is a good investment
RoadTrip
Some combination of black jack, strippers, booze, and delicious prime beef.
Shit I haven't changed much in 15 years.
1) Autographed poster with Ricky Walker, Woody Baron, and Brandon Flowers with a lunchpail in the middle.
2) Fishing trip to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
3) The remainder would go into the house fund.
A full-time reporter for TKP....
Or video games, a big green egg, a new tv, Pappy and a few first growth wines to celebrate the births of my eventual children.
Put away some to cover upcoming moving expenses. Send some towards student loans. Maybe buy a GPU or two to then resell when the price inevitably goes up again.
Gibson ES 339, Epiphone Wildkat, and a nice shotgun.
Booze.
Kemper profiling amplifier, custom Aristides guitar, and save the rest.
Time Machine. So I can keep going back in time and collecting more $10,000 checks
If you go back in time, just remember not to step on anything.
"You get three wishes."
"For my first wish, I want an infinite number of wishes."
I would spend it on alcohol, an epic road trip involving Hokie sports, and chasing women.
The rest I would probably squander.
I'd buy a shark with a firckin' laser beam on its head!

Definitely tuition or a car
I would have asked for all 10,000 to be in one dollar bills then I would have taken a field trip to Southern Xposure
"Ah yes, the place to go if you're into gums and C-section scars." - One OChem TA to another, Fall 2011, Hahn Hall North 411
1993 MR2 Turbo, pimp that bitch out.
college me: cases of natural ice, CDs from the record exchange, gumby dammits and just enough cash to get me to spring break and back.
anything else is damned lie.
Leg for the Dammit. Haven't heard that name in 20 years.
It would've almost paid off all of my parking tickets.
Stock in the Green Bay Packers when it was available (still bitter I was too poor at the time)
A kick ass trip for spring break since I could never afford to go anywhere (see the trend?)
Probably a shit ton of videogames because I am forever and always a loser 😅
You'll always have us
Knowing college-me, I likely would have dropped the whole thing at Crutchfield on electronics. And yes Crutchfield was around then. It would have taken me around 5-6 minutes.
one semester's worth of books
Leasing books saved me a ton with my daughter's classes. I was good at googling the book's ISBN to find the best lease deal.
I never bought books after my first semester.
Not sure if that was me being smart or me being a slackass
As a college kid right now, plenty of Natty.
VIP greenbrier tickets
Ok. I got the winner right here

And it would be fully customized in LOLUVA colors (stainless chrome blue, white & orange), with Cavman's mouth as the seat & the UVA insignia at the bottom of the bowl. The rest would be rails @ tots.
Masters Tickets.
which days
Wednesday Thursday Saturday are the best days for any golf tournament. Sunday's you want to be home to see the finish and Friday is just Friday.
My brother won 4 practice round tickets in the lottery for this year and is going Wednesday. I unfortunately did NOT make the list of guests
Ill be there Tuesday. But there isn't a bad day to be at Augusta.
ouch thats cold
Just as mentioned above, definitely Thursday and Saturday. I was able to take my dad to the PGA championship at Quail Hollow last year on Sunday and man it was packed. We got to see some awesome action and also Frank was their following Jordan Speith so we got to talk to him but Sunday makes for a long day.
COOKOUT
"I would like 2,000 Virginia trays"
White castle
Well depends on which college me you ask.
2004 college me would have been car parts and weed.
2014 college me would have been school loans and weed.
Which type/brands?
2004 me mostly honda parts
2014 me federal subsidized and private
I thought he was talking about the weed 🧐
Unfortunately the ability to easily choose what type has not reached my area of habitation :(
Sounds like you're gauging for a more hybrid type.
Hey!
I'm not an expert, but there's absolutely zero need for that type of label on here, dude.
Sorry. Half baked is my automatic response when a thread devolves into talking about weed.
Put it away to go to VT's CFP semi-final and the National Championship. If it takes awhile use dividends and capital gains to buy beer.
Though I should probably just throw it all at my student loans, and use the money I don't have to pay interest on to fund the trips...
I'd love to answer this but for some reason I don't remember anything from those days.
Your answer is booze.
I got a $2,000 scholarship my senior year when a professor asked me to apply. Said I was the only eligible undergrad in the Geophysics department, and that I should write a brief thank-you letter to the corporate sponsor (Thank you again Texaco).
I spent $1800 of that on a desktop computer so I didn't have to walk to the computer lab to get my work done. It was an newer Pentium II as I remember, and I had that machine for about 7 yrs.
One kickass formals weekend with Lacey Chabert.
I had no debt, and used my ROTC stipend to buy all the Crown Black I needed. So I'd have bought Netflix stock. And 5 years later, I'd use that now $100,000 to put a down payment on a house, buy a Triumph Bonneville, a bottle of Pappy 15 yr, and a bespoke Saville Row suit, and take a long vacation to Britain, Ireland, and Germany. Whatever is left goes into a defense ETF, cause war is profitable and it ain't going away.
My father just finally got his hands on some good pappy after waiting forever I tried it and gotta say I've had similar stuff for a lot less but my father said it was worth it
A good bird dog puppy preferably German drathar and a bunch of copper for a nice still and a new straw hat
That was easy
Roth IRA
