Proud of this team, but we really need to reestablish the ground attack. I'm glad the passing game is improving, and that 84-yarder to Byrn and that 45-yard touchdown to Knowles were outstanding. That being said, we need to become more balanced on offense again and play clock control with a robust rushing element. Loeffler and Logan are tearing up the record books, and glad he's in the Press Box now.
Also, Andy, do you know where to find an official list of winningest schools to compare Cuse and Tech?

Where is Aaron McFarling? Why is he not posting his articles on here, too? The only time I read his articles is when they're linked from yours. And next to his columns, there is a picture of you.
Is Aaron McFarling just a pen-name allowing you to pull two salaries? I've found you out, Bitter...

The 'Canes are 5-0, fresh off a 45-30 win against Georgia Tech. But their only other quality win was against Florida, so there's still some questions about just how good Miami is too.
Umm...They're pretty good.

I wonder if there is a UVA board somewhere that asks: "5 thoughts after losing to Ball State".
Ummm......
1) London
2) How could that great defense let that happen? (lol)
3) London
4) What state is Ball State even in? (lol, I really know, just for fun)
5) Would London make a better campus cop?

In response to #2) Umm... UVA held Ball State to 5-14 on 3rd down, that's only 35% which puts them at 26% for the year (8th overall). #Best3rdDownConversionDefenseEver

if you take out the Alabama disaster and the Western Carolina patsy (the toughest and easiest games on the schedule), you start to see a clearer picture of what kind of passer Thomas has been this year: the senior is 81-for-130 against ECU, Marshall, GT and UNC, a 62.3 percent completion rate, about in line with his preseason goal. He has seven touchdowns, three picks and is averaging 238.25 yards per game in that span. Those are pretty solid numbers. And he appears to be gaining comfort in Scot Loeffler's system every game, standing in the pocket longer, going through reads, making checkdown passes.
The results speak for themselves.

It was also the first collegiate game for MANY of our starting offense and defensive positions. Especially at skill positions and they have arguably played Bama tougher than almost anyone else this season. We got beat fairly badly but no where close to a disaster. A disaster is a 63-0 ass whipping by FSU.

Our passing game was a complete disaster. If it wasn't for Trey's run, we'd probably be saying that it was a disaster for the entire offense. The defense was the only group who showed up ready to play.

Agree that passing game was terrible due to #allthedroppedballs, however calling the entire game a disaster is a tad hyperbolic when compared to a 63-0 beatdown. That's when words like disaster, destruction, destroyed, etc should be used.

Reread the original quote from Andy's article. He wasn't claiming the entire game was a disaster. The reference to 'Alabama being a disaster' was in specific reference to the passing game, as he goes on to state passing stats on the season with that game and WCU removed.
The passing game against Alabama absolutely was a disaster. That along with the special team let downs cost us the game. A decent passing attack (that negates the pick 6 and probably puts at least a few more points on the board) coupled with not allowing those returns go for touchdowns, and we very well could have won the game.

Andy,
I looked through all of your game, post-game notes and didn't see anything on this. I just got back from the game this morning so I may have missed it, but was there anything said about Kendall replacing Kyshoen on punt returns around the 3ed quarter? I know many have been critical of Kyshoen back there and I'm starting to agree. Is this going to become a permanent change?

Andy, any update on the Sam Rogers injury? Watching from the stands, from the way he was walking up and down the sideline and grimacing it seemed to be an Achilles tweak.

Suddenly I am reminded of the scheduling change due to the conference member change. Without it, we'd be playing Miami at home, hopefully for the owner of the Coastal.

I like the perspective given here, and reinforces the defensive turnaround we saw late last year:
Virginia Tech has still not allowed an opponent to top 400 yards in a game since last year's UNC game, a streak of 13 games. In today's era of explosive offenses, that's pretty impressive.
As to the blocked extra point, I don't know if it's anyone's fault, but as soon as I saw the defender in the air I thought (almost out loud) "that's getting blocked." He got some AIR. It seemed like there was something about how the holder took the snap, as well, like maybe it was late.

I don't think he got air as much as he was nearly at the holder when Cody kicked it. He shifted at the last second before the snap, hit a hole, and walked through the line. Saw that block coming all the way.
Edit: Just saw the replay and the guy didn't shift before the snap. He just went unblocked and was about 3 or 4 yards deep when Cody kicked it right into him. Well played by Trey Gresh to prevent the return though. Guy was on his feet quick and made the shoe string tackle.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned on the blocked PAT and the missed FG's is that we have switched snappers before this season. Eddie D'Antuano is now the snapper, a r-Fr. He's 6'6" and 263 lbs, went to Bishop Ireton and is majoring in Finance. Seems like a nice enough lad. Maybe we moved him into this role because he's OL sized.
Because last years snapper, Joe St. Germain, is only 6'0" 220lbs. He's only a r-Jr and snapped punts, FG's and PAT's last year. For some reason, he was replaced by D'Antuano.
D'Antuano just never saw the guy who blocked the PAT. Most of Journell's early misses were due to snap issues throwing of Gresh's placement timing. The last couple snaps were better but I think Journell is thinking about the snap. Now, he's probably thinking about whether anyone is going to block the guy right in the middle of the formation.

How many times did the long snapper send the ball sailing over the punters head last year? I remember worrying every time we had to punt. That might be why he was replaced.

I can't believe people were calling for Leal a few weeks ago. Without Logan our offense would be beyond bad. He has been playing amazing.
Consider the source, but here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_FBS_football_win-loss_records
And now that I post that, I can already tell it's off. VT has 701 wins as a program, so it's clearly not updated. Syracuse has 700 I believe.
Thanks, I looked at Wikipedia and thought the same thing.
It says that the records are accurate as of December 21, 2012, but some have been updated since while most have not.
One thought after reading Andy's Five Thoughts.

Oregon held CU to 0 for 15. I'd say that puts them well ahead in the conversation for #Best3rdDownConversionDefenseEver
Obviously, you're not reading theSabre.com enough:

Snooping tonight over there...
Apparently, London is still preparing for ACC opener. LOL Pitt's already beat them. Their fans have so much pride hahahaha
No, I'm well versed in that thread, I just wanted to post that stat. 0-15 is pretty freaking ridiculous.
#notsogoodat1stand2nddowns!
The results speak for themselves.
Might I add, it's amazing what real offensive coaching can do.
Ha ha ha. Friggin turkey leg.
not sure I would call Alabama game a disaster, but I like the info
It was an unmitigated disaster, by the entire passing crew. Logan had his fair share of troubles, but our receivers were dropping everything in sight.
It was also the first collegiate game for MANY of our starting offense and defensive positions. Especially at skill positions and they have arguably played Bama tougher than almost anyone else this season. We got beat fairly badly but no where close to a disaster. No worries man. Agree to disagree on that.

So you mean I need to read?? Yes you are absolutely correct.

Kyshoen was cramping up, so that definitely had something to do with it.
Andy, any update on the Sam Rogers injury? Watching from the stands, from the way he was walking up and down the sideline and grimacing it seemed to be an Achilles tweak.
The ACC network reported at the half that it was most likely a sprain. I don't remember if they did a follow up on it though.
Another great article Andy.
Suddenly I am reminded of the scheduling change due to the conference member change. Without it, we'd be playing Miami at home, hopefully for the owner of the Coastal.
AND we'd have the return game with FSU.
Thanks, Swoffie.
Call me crazy (YOU'RE CRAZY!) but I really wanted to play them again this season.
I sure wasn't looking forward to Maryland...
have you seen the attendance for a Miami game? It wouldn't take many Hokies to make this a home game
Ah, you are correct, sir.
Picture me with a V8 style slap to the forehead.
Consider yourself V8 Slapped
jk, you had a good point. Damn you ACC scheduling!
The Louisville Temple game had MUCH LESS than this.
Itd looked like a crowd for an unscheduled 7on7 pickup.

At lease there's one good sports journalist out there, thanks Andy!
And I also like the phrase "The Hokies gobbled those up quick after that..." somehow I don't think that was done accidentally. Gobble Gobble, bitches.
I really want one of those "Gobble Gobble Bitches" tshirts but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to wear it
in public lol
GO HOKIES!
